How many post on instagram a day

How Often to Post to Social Media in 2023

It’s the question that launched a thousand sleepless nights: “How often should I post to social media?”

Of course, there’s much, much more to a successful social media strategy than just posting the optimal number of times: it’s not a magic formula, let’s get that straight.

Still, there’s a lot of pressure on to find that sweet spot of frequency. You don’t want to overwhelm your followers or feel like you’re spamming the news feed. You also don’t want to be forgotten or miss opportunities for exposure.

But how much is too much? How much is too little? (And then once you’ve figured that out, when’s the best time to post?)

Well, good news: you can stop your social posting panic spiral. We’ve got all the info you need about exactly how often you should be posting to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn to really optimize your reach — without annoying your followers.

We dug into the research and grilled our own social media team for insights to discover the ideal number of times a day (or week) to post for each platform. Here’s a quick summary of what we found, but read on for more in-depth details:

  • On Instagram, post between 3-7 times per week.
  • On Facebook, post between 1 and 2 times a day.
  • On Twitter, post between 1 and 5 Tweets a day.
  • On LinkedIn, post between 1 and 5 times a day.

Every social media account is unique, so testing and analyzing your results is absolutely key. But read on for a detailed breakdown of some general rules of thumb to use as a starting point… then, you can let the great experiment begin.

How often to post on Instagram

It is generally recommended to post to your Instagram feed 2-3 times per week, and no more than 1x per day. Stories can be posted more frequently.

During Instagram’s Creator Week in June 2021, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri suggested that posting 2 feed posts per week and 2 Stories per day is ideal for building a following on the app.

A post shared by Instagram’s @Creators (@creators)

To keep up with your competitors (or frenemies!) it’s probably good to note that businesses post 1.56 posts to their feed per day. This might seem like a lot, but a social media content calendar can help make regular posting a breeze!

The Hootsuite social media team’s current strategy is to just post to the main feed 2 to 3 times each week, and to Stories 2 to 3 times a week.

“Think about how often your audience wants to hear from you,” says Brayden Cohen, social marketing team lead. “Focus on building a regular cadence: you can grow your followers by 2x by simply posting every week consistently, compared to those who post less frequently than once a week.”

And if you think that an algorithmically controlled timeline means post timing doesn’t matter, think again. Our experiments have proven that post timing does have an impact on Instagram engagement.

Key Instagram statistics to keep in mind when posting:

  • Instagram has 3.76 billion visits every day
  • 500 million people use Stories every day
  • The average user spends 30 minutes a day on Instagram
  • 81% of people use Instagram to research products and services
  • 63% of American users check Instagram at least once day

How often to post on Facebook

It is generally recommended to post 1 time per day, and no more than 2 times per day.

In fact, some studies have even found a drop in engagement if you’re posting more than that… so don’t get too post-happy. Aim for quality over quantity.

The average Facebook Page shares 1.55 posts per day. So, for Hootsuite’s social goals, 1 to 2 posts per day is just right.

“Daily posting will grow followers 4x faster than posting less than once a week. Makes sense: more visibility,” says Brayden.

To keep that regular content coming, it’s a good idea to create a content calendar to stay organized. Try out our free content calendar template, or play around with the Hootsuite Planner tool.

Key Facebook statistics to keep in mind when posting:

  • Facebook is the world’s third most-visited website
  • More than half of American users check Facebook several times per day
  • The average user spends 34 minutes per day on Facebook
  • 80% of people access the platform using mobile only

Get some more fascinating numbers in our breakdown of the latest Facebook statistics and Facebook demographics.

How often to post on Twitter

It is generally recommended to post 1-2 times per day, and no more than 3-5 times per day.

Of course, there are plenty of power users out there… accounts posting 50 or 100 times a day. If you’ve got the time, we’re certainly not going to stop you.

But to keep your brand’s presence active and engaged on Twitter, you really don’t need to drop everything and commit to a FT gig Tweeting.

In fact, for the general @Hootsuite channel (where the audience is followers, customers and prospects), the Hootsuite team posts one thread of 7 to 8 Tweets daily, plus one other post. On our @hootsuitebusiness channel (aimed at supporting Enterprise initiatives), they stick to 1 to 2 Tweets daily.

Finding a typo in a post that's already generated a ton of engagement too. The worst.

— Hootsuite 🦉 (@hootsuite) June 10, 2021

For the team, that’s more than enough to drive engagement and growth.

Remember that, however frequently you’re posting, the best practice is to follow the rule of thirds:

  • ⅓ of tweets promote your business
  • ⅓ share personal stories
  • ⅓ are informative insights from experts or influencers

Key Twitter statistics to keep in mind when posting:

  • One-quarter of American users check Twitter several times a day
  • Watch time on Twitter has increased 72% since last year
  • 42% of American users check Twitter at least once day
  • The average time a user spends on Twitter is about 15 minutes per visit

How often to post on LinkedIn

On LinkedIn, it is generally recommended to post at least once a day, and no more than 5x per day.

LinkedIn itself has seen brands that post once a month gain followers six times faster than those who keep a lower profile. That pattern continues with more frequent posting: companies that post weekly see twice the engagement, while bands that post daily gain even more traction.

Hootsuite tends to fall on the more-frequent end of that spectrum… in fact, the social team increased their daily posting on LinkedIn in 2021: from two posts per day to three, and sometimes up to five depending on campaigns and events.

“The increase in posting cadence has also meant an increase in engagement rate,” says Iain Beable, social marketing strategist. “This however is more reflective of the type of content we are creating. Generally, if you increase cadence, there is a good chance you may see a drop in engagement rate as there is more content. As we have seen an increase, it shows the content we are creating is more relevant to our audience and more engaging. “

To make sure your posting strategy is aligned with your engagement goals, keep track of LinkedIn analytics with a social media management tool like Hootsuite.

  • Companies that post weekly on LinkedIn see a 2x higher engagement rate
  • 12% of American users check LinkedIn several times a day

How to know the best posting frequency for social media

As with all things social, finding the best frequency to post on any platform is going to require some trial and error.

“I personally have always found the topic of how many times per day should I post a little over-thought and definitely secondary to the quality of the content one is publishing,” says Iian.

“Increase in key performance metrics such as clicks and high quality engagements (comments and shares over likes) is fundamentally due to whether a piece of content adds value to me as the reader.

In a nutshell: The quality of content matters more than frequency. While posting more content may help to some extent, the more relevant and useful your content is to the audience, the better your social channels will perform.

“In a similar way to how organic search has pivoted from being focused on the keyword to the intent behind the keyword, the same can be said for social,” adds Iian. “Social algorithms are now placing emphasis on the types of content which will provide the user with value, rather than just showing the user everything that is published. “

How often should you post to Instagram every week?

It’s a question that elicits a lot of conflicting opinions from social media managers, creators, and solopreneurs alike.

So, as a leading social media scheduling and management platform, we took matters (AKA data!) into our own hands and analyzed over 22M Instagram feed posts (images, videos, carousels, and Reels).

Here’s what we found.

Table of Contents

  • Does Posting Frequency on Instagram Really Matter?
  • How Often Should You Post on Instagram Every Week?
  • How Often You Should Post on Instagram for Reach & Engagement
  • So, How Often Should You Really Post on Instagram?

Does Posting Frequency on Instagram Really Matter?

Short answer: yes.

While “consistency” is the buzzword du jour, being consistent on Instagram is a great way to grow on the app.

“The more consistent your posts, the more your audience will get to know you — which in turn builds trust. They’ll also know what to expect from you, giving them a reason to follow and engage with your content,” says Later’s Social Media Manager, Christine Colling.

Since posting more consistently on Instagram, I’ve reached 187k views on my reels 😩 I really think there’s something to explore there y’all …

— Aasha Collins (@aashacollinsxo) September 27, 2022

But it has to be manageable.

Rather than posting just to post, be more strategic and consider what’s achievable for you (or your team).

“Consistency doesn’t have to mean posting every single day. Set your own pace and create a reasonable schedule — even if it means starting with just one or two posts a week,” adds Christine.

Plus, not every post type is created equal.

If your goal is to reach more eyes, you may want to focus on creating Reels or shareable carousel posts

If you’d like to connect with your audience, doubling-down on Instagram Stories could encourage an influx of DMs.

The takeaway?

While posting consistently on Instagram will help you build a community, it’s important to:

  • Define (and frequently revisit) your social strategy and goals

  • Determine an achievable posting frequency

  • Experiment with different post types

  • Analyze your content performance to see what’s working

How Often Should You Post on Instagram Every Week in 2023?

After analyzing over 22M Instagram feed posts from January 1, 2022 to October 12, 2022, we found that users with:

  • Nano accounts (0-10K followers) post an average of 3 feed posts per week

  • Micro accounts (10K-100K followers) post an average of 3 feed posts per week

  • Mid accounts (100K-500K followers) post an average of 5 feed posts per week

How does that stack up against Instagram’s recommendations?

In June 2021, Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, suggested posting, “a couple feed posts a week, and a couple stories a day.”

Yes, that advice is a little vague, but remember: one size doesn't fit all.

As for Later’s social team?

With over 470K Instagram followers, we post an average of 10 feed posts a week (around 1-2 a day).

But how often should you post for optimal engagement and reach by post type — for example, how many Reels a week? How many carousels?

Keep reading, we’re breaking down all the data below.

How Often You Should Post on Instagram in 2023 for Reach & Engagement — According to Post Type

Depending on your specific Instagram goals, your post type could be the ticket to increased reach, engagement, or a combination of both.

Reach rate is a valuable indicator of your exposure, while engagement rate can indicate how well your content resonates with your community.

Based on our analysis, here’s how often you should post on Instagram — for optimal reach and engagement — according to post type:

How Often Nano Accounts Should Post on Instagram— According to Post Type

According to our analysis, Nano accounts (0-10K followers) see the highest average engagement rates with Reels.

1 Reel = an average engagement rate of 3.95%.

And if you’ve got even more time (and resources) on your hands, posting 14 Reels = an average engagement rate of 4.73%.

However, carousel posts get a ton of engagement too. Posting just 1 carousel a week = an average engagement rate of 3.36%:

When it comes to reach rate, posting more Reels reigns supreme:

How Often Micro Accounts Should Post on Instagram — According to Post Type

Micro accounts (10K-100K followers) tend to see high average engagement rates with Reels and videos.

If you want to go big, 20 Reels = an average engagement rate of 2.99% — the highest of all post types.

In comparison, 1 Reel = an average engagement rate of 1.05%.

But carousel posts come in strong too! Posting anywhere from 1-5 carousels a week can see an average engagement rate of 0.9% or higher:

For reach rate, on average, the more Reels and video content you post per week, the higher your overall reach:

How Often Mid Accounts Should Post on Instagram — According to Post Type

Mid accounts have between 100K-500K followers, so it comes as no surprise that their engagement rates are lower than their Nano and Micro counterparts.

However, a healthy mix of Reels and carousels — for example, 5 of each a week — can see an average engagement rate over 0.74%:

For reach, yet again, posting multiple Reels a week yields the best results:

P. S. Our team analyzed over 11M posts to discover the best time to post on Instagram. Bookmark this: When Is the Best Time to Post on Instagram in 2023?

So, How Often Should You Really Post a Week on Instagram?

If you want to reach new audiences, posting more Reels — paired with an effective hashtag and keyword strategy — is always a good idea.

However, if engagement is the name of the game, consider using a variety of post types — carousel posts and single images have decent engagement rates too.

But most importantly, try not to get caught up in the numbers — creating quality content trumps quantity.

Instead, use this data as a starting point to gather insights and experiment with your own account to find what works best.

Rules for publishing content on social networks - when to post and how much

Today we will analyze a seemingly ordinary question. How much and where? And indeed, it is ordinary only at first glance, because in fact the number of posts must be measured depending on the specifics of the account and its goals.

But there is one important rule for all accounts and for all social networks.

Post when you really have something to say. When Your Content Isn't Sucked Out of Your Finger.

If you have a brand account

In this case, it is important not to overdo it, but still stay in touch with customers or potential customers. It's cool to catch that balance when subscribers are waiting for your posts. Because you have already established yourself as a useful and beautiful account.

To do this, you need to carefully work out the content. But that is another story. Let's talk about quantity. It is generally accepted that on Instagram* you need to publish once a day. This just allows you to stay in sight and at the same time not really bother network users. But I'll tell you, it's unlikely that anyone will be upset about skipping one day if you don't have great content. And also, no one will be angry if you have accumulated two important newsworthy events in a day that are worth talking about.

Popsters conducted an audience survey in 2019 and found out that Instagram* accounts with over 100k followers generally publish two posts a day, and one with less than 100k followers. At the same time, the involvement in the post is the same for all types of accounts - the recommendation system of the social network affects.

Posting and engagement on Instagram*

In general, Instagram*: 1-2 posts per day. We skip when there is nothing to say. The main thing is that the photos are beautiful, of high quality, at the professional level.

VKontakte: Once a day, but you can skip it. The posts are more informative: life hacks, useful data, etc.

Facebook*: A couple of times a week, preferably with reference to the news agenda.

If you plan to seriously engage in promotion in social networks, we recommend reading: "Where to study as an SMM specialist: recommendations and courses."

If you run a business account

For small and medium businesses that run social media accounts, the rules are about the same: post once a day or even less often. On Instagram*, stories are important for business – through them, you can effectively communicate about promotions, discounts, sales, and other promotional activities. The feed is best used for publishing entertaining, engaging or informational content.

The barbershop uses the Instagram feed* to post pictures of finished work, especially once a week

Anastasia Kravtsova, SMM specialist

How many stories to make per day? No need to chase the quantity and shoot stories "on the knee" if only they were. The best thing is at least 2-3 stories per day. Better - 5-7.

If there is an informational reason, you can do more. But I recommend not posting everything at once. It should not be that you went to Instagram *, uploaded 5 stories at once and forgot. User engagement is better when there is time between stories. This applies to stories with information, the sale of additional or basic services, finished products or works.

We often open Instagram* and business, in order to be in sight, it is best to constantly flicker in the line above, where the red circles of stories are lit. If you post everything at once, then they can quickly scroll through everything and on the same day, when the user opens Instagram again*, you will not be in sight. Therefore, stories need to be distributed correctly for the day and posted every hour or two. If some event occurs on the territory of the business, then no one forbids you to post often and a lot.

Total: we understand the context, we inform our subscribers, but we don’t load it.

Instagram*: once a day or less. We actively use stories.

VKontakte: once a day or less. Posts are better to publish more detailed and on broad topics. Humor and memes are great too.

Facebook*: several times a week. Ideal - only expert materials.

See also: Content Matrix Guide: Effortless Topic Generation.

If you have a media account or city public

If your activities overlap with the news or you take on the role of the media, the rules are different for you. In order to answer what they are, I analyzed dozens of information accounts like CLIQUE.

CLIQUE publishes pop culture posts 24 hours a day

For example, almost every city has a "Typical (insert city name)" account.

We have a "Typical Krasnodar", which can have 10 posts per day

This is due to the fact that information must be submitted according to newsworthy events. And on a day of news, there can be a lot, and it is important for informational publics to work out and talk about everything that the audience lives by (in our case, the city). Therefore, various news publications usually grow quickly and attract subscribers. But, engagement under posts and general interest may fall.

Popsters research confirms this data: the greater the number of followers, the lower the engagement per post, but the higher the total engagement per day. So, on VKontakte, communities with an audience of more than 100,000 people publish up to 22 posts a day, get maximum engagement per day, but less per post. Small communities have the opposite situation: there are few posts, the overall involvement is low, but each post is like a holiday. There is only one conclusion: you can “take” both quantity and quality.

Popular posts per day for VKontakte

Instagram*, Facebook*, VKontakte: up to 20 posts per day.

If you are developing a personal account

The most subjective approach to personal accounts. I know popular bloggers, one of whom can post 1-2 times a week, but I also know another who posts often, sometimes several times a day.

Let me give you Valery Dolgova as an example. She doesn't post photos very often on Instagram*. And this allows her to maintain a certain image of mystery.

Instagram* Valeria Dolgova

Her opponent in this regard is Sasha Zharkova. She posts one, sometimes two photos a day, as well as many stories. This amount of content completely immerses subscribers in her life.

Instagram* Sasha Zharkova

Based on the analysis of popular bloggers, you can measure the average "temperature in the hospital":

Instagram*: once a day.

Facebook*, VKontakte: 1 time in several days.

Best time to post content on social media

We answered the question "how much" to post optimally for different types of accounts, now let's figure out - "when" it is better to post.

Top tip: keep track of your publication statistics. For example, in the DataFan service, you can see user engagement by day of the week and time of day for a certain period of time.

Of course, to collect statistics, you need to post regularly - it is difficult to collect reliable data in a week

In the meantime, you can look at someone else's experience. Sprout Social conducted a study and collected data on the best time to post on social networks in 2021. They studied statistics from more than 20,000 of their customers to find out when users interacted with content the most and least often, broken down by platform and industry.

The service does not work with VKontakte, and accordingly there is no data on the time when it is better to post on VK in the report. But there is Facebook* and Instagram*.

Note that best posting time on any platform is always an average. It all depends on the audience. For example, schoolchildren are not very comfortable using social networks when they are in class.

Best time to post content on Facebook*.

Considering Facebook*'s status as the world's most popular social network, it's no wonder it's active almost around the clock
  • Best time: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 to 13:00.
  • Best days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday.
  • Worst day: Saturday.

Best time to post content on Instagram*.

Summary

The right number of posts and well-chosen posting time is perhaps the smallest component of a successful account. Content is important, its uniqueness, beauty. The mood with which you communicate with subscribers is important. Correct advertising and thoughtful collaborations are important.

But let me return to the quantity and finally I will advise you to feel. Look at the conversion - do not you post a lot. Look into the comments. When subscribers expect more from you, they usually talk about it. Well, don't hesitate to ask!

How many posts per day can be posted on Instagram – Blog Instaplus.me

How many posts can be published on Instagram should be measured taking into account the specifics of the account and its goals. It is important not to overdo it, but at the same time stay in touch with your subscribers and potential customers. You need to catch the very optimal balance, and this is impossible without a detailed study of the account.

Contents of page

How many posts can be posted per day

There is no specific limit on how many photos per day you can upload. Formally, you can post as many times a day as your heart desires, but it’s important not to get blocked in the process.

The Instagram administration does not disclose official limits, the excess of which may result in blocking. It is only known that the limits depend on the characteristics of the account, such as its age and the number of followers. There are also certain tips based on the experience of other users.

Using practical research methods, users managed to establish two facts:

  • on accounts that were created less than six months ago, it is recommended to post a small number of posts per day, a maximum of 2-3 publications;
  • owners of profiles registered on the network more than 6 months ago can afford to post 9-12 photos per feed.

Anything that exceeds these limits may be regarded as spam and lead to account blocking.

Optimal number of posts

You already know how much you can post, and now let's figure out how much you really need. After all, these are completely different values, because in addition to restrictions from the administration of the social network, any good SMM manager should also be concerned about the desires of subscribers.

The optimal number of posts depends on factors such as:

  • industries;
  • target audience preferences;
  • the number of subscribers;
  • amount of interesting information that you can share with users.

Someone prefers to post once a day, many post up to 6 times, and some brands even up to 30, posting every half hour, and their audience clearly doesn’t mind. Everyone should determine the optimal number of posts for himself. There are only general recommendations.

Personal account

Everyone has a subjective approach to maintaining personal accounts. Someone wants to immerse subscribers in their lives as much as possible. Others, in addition to photos, also share useful information for followers. In this case, it is recommended to fast up to three times a day. If this is not enough to share everything you wanted, then upload the remaining content to Stories.

There are bloggers who have chosen the path of rare publications. New posts on their pages appear only a few times a week, which helps to maintain a certain image of mystery.

1 post per day - the average optimal number of publications based on the analysis of the pages of popular bloggers.

At the same time, keep in mind that there is a relationship between engagement rates and the number of posts published. The more you post, the more likes you get. At the same time, if users do not have time to respond to your post or stop anxiously waiting for new content, then this can negatively affect the statistics.

Brand account

It is generally accepted that it is enough for commercial pages to publish one post per day. This is enough to ensure that subscribers do not forget about you, but at the same time, you will not bother them.

But not everything is so simple, because a lot still depends on how much interesting content you have and how you can please your subscribers. If there is no good content, but it is unlikely that anyone will be upset because of missing one day. At the same time, if you decide to hold some action or want to share a sensation, then you should not deny yourself the publication of an additional post.

Many brands successfully combine posts of various directions in their feed, which allows you to post more often and more often to attract attention, but at the same time not to bother subscribers. For example, in the morning you can post a motivational post related to the subject of your profile, at lunchtime you can post an advertising post, and in the evening you can post an informational one. Thus, you can increase brand loyalty, advertise products, and talk about the benefits of cooperation.

Tips and tricks

It is believed that the more often you publish Instagram posts, the more likes you get, the higher the percentage of engagement and the faster you can gain followers. In fact, everything is arranged a little differently, but the posts really need to be launched into the feed regularly in order to remain visible.

It's no secret that the Instagram algorithm has changed a lot in recent years. This can be seen from three-day-old posts in the feed and new likes on photos posted a few days ago. Before the algorithm change, Instagram had a half-life of 72 minutes.
