Facebook's infamous privacy policy has ever cast a disapproving light on its messaging app, and yet it remains one of the most popular communication tools.
Compared to most messaging apps, there are serious drawbacks when it comes to being able to read chat messages without the sender knowing.
If you're someone who likes to think over a message before giving the right answer, Facebook Messenger might run out of options. But there are several ways you can read chat messages without setting a read receipt for the sender. That's all about them.
As soon as you open a chat in Facebook Messenger, the messages in the chat are marked as read. Unlike other messaging apps, Facebook doesn't let you turn off read receipts for messages you've opened.
You may see an option to mark a chat as unread by long pressing on it, but this does not actually remove the read receipt. This is just a tool for convenient sorting of chats in Messenger, nothing more. So, essentially, there is no real way to read messages without the other person knowing. That is, unless you use the methods below.
There are several ways to read Facebook messages from both the Messenger app and your PC browser. Most of them are tricky tricks and workarounds that work quite well most of the time.
The easiest way to read a message without the other person knowing is to read it when you receive a message notification. By default, when you receive a Facebook message, you receive a notification on your phone that includes the sender's name and a short message.
You can expand the notification and read the message to get an idea of what it is about without the other person knowing about it. A read receipt will not be generated unless you click on the notification and be taken to the chat screen.
If a message is too long or there are multiple messages, you may not be able to read all of them.
However, you can send the chat to spam and read it there without worrying about the "Visible" status.
To do this, open the Messenger app and press and hold a chat.
Select Ignore messages .

Now, to access this spam folder, click on your profile icon in the top left corner.

Read receipts are disabled for chats categorized as spam, so you don't have to worry about the other person knowing if you've read their messages. To start receiving notifications for this chat again, simply reply with a message and the chat will no longer be classified as spam.
Another smart way to read messages without making the other party know about it is to turn off the internet on your phone before opening and reading a chat.
This way you won't let the application itself know that you've seen the message, and the sender won't know either. So, whenever you want to read secret messages, just swipe down on the quick settings bar and tap on Airplane Mode to turn it on.
After reading the chat messages, close the application before turning the Internet back on.
If you log into Facebook on your PC browser, you will find that as soon as you receive a message, you will receive a pop-up chat with that message.
