The number of accounts you follow matters most when you’re around 1,000 to 1,500 followers because that’s when you’re at the cusp of growing to new levels. 

It’s pretty simple— if you’re just using Instagram for personal reasons or to connect with friends and family, the average number of Instagram followers is 150, which is ultimately pretty low.

If that’s the purpose behind your account, the following ratio doesn’t matter because your friends and family aren’t looking at how many people you follow. 

Once you hit over 1k followers, this is when you start to reach the micro-influencer status, so you can expect to gain more notoriety for your profile.

If your goal is to attract marketing partners or sponsors, it’s important that you pay attention to how many accounts you’re following.

These numbers describe the percentage ratio of followers to the number of your followed accounts. 

Less than 0.5% followers: Spammer. If you have a really high number of followed accounts in contrast to those that follow you, you can be considered a spammer that tries to follow accounts in order to get them to follow you back.

It can also signal an account to be a bot or fake account, so be careful. 

0.5-1% followers: Suspicious. When you are almost at a 1:1 follower ratio, it shows that you may not know how to grow your Instagram effectively or that your content isn’t performing well enough to drive more follower growth. It can also show that you lose followers quickly since your ratio isn’t improving. 

1-2%: Normal. If you have a 1:1 or 2:1 follower ratio, it shows that you are gaining some traction on Instagram and you should continue working to become more competitive.
