Send high-quality photos, videos on WhatsApp without compression

If you want to bypass WhatsApp’s aggressive compression and send media (photos, video, audio) in full resolution, the official workaround is to send the media files as Document. When you send any photo, video, or audio as a Document on WhatsApp, it retains the actual size and bypasses WhatsApp’s compression.

The below sections will guide you to send photos, videos on WhatsApp as Documents on iPhone and Android.

Send a photo or video as a Document from an Android device

To send a photo or video as a Document on WhatsApp from an Android device, do the following:

  2. Tap on the paper clip icon from the bottom-right corner, and choose the Document option.
  3. Browse and select the media file that you want to share. If you don’t see it in the list, tap on “Browse other docs…”, and select the media from the desired location.
  4. Finally, hit Send.

  4. Tap on Send from the top-right corner to share the video.

The selected photo or video will be sent to the desired contact as a Document in its original quality.

How to send better quality photos on WhatsApp

WhatsApp has rolled out a new update that now gives users the option to choose between more compression (Data saver) or more quality (Best quality) while uploading photos.

The “Data saver” mode still uses WhatsApp’s older compression technique that noticeably reduces photo quality while sending. On the other hand, the “Best quality” mode uses a newer, less aggressive compression technique that retains most of the original quality of the image.

While the Document type still provides the best option to share photos, videos without any quality loss, the new “Best quality” option provides a decent alternative for quickly sharing photos without compromising much on the quality.

To enable the Best quality mode for sharing photos on WhatsApp do the following:

  1. Open WhatsApp Settings (Android: Tap on the three dots in the top-right corner from the Chats screen; iOS: Tap on the Settings tab from the bottom of the screen).
  2. Go to Storage and Data.
  3. On Android, tap on the “Photo upload quality” under the “Media upload quality” section. On iOS, simply tap on Media Upload Quality.
  4. Choose Best quality for Photos.
  5. Tap on OK to confirm, if you’re on Android.

From now on, whenever you send a photo on WhatsApp, the recipient(s) will receive a better quality image that is closer to the original in quality.

Thus, you can send actual size photos or video on WhatsApp without compressing them, or use the “Best quality” setting to send better quality photos from iPhone and Android.

How to send large video on WhatsApp [more than 16 MB]

Due to its vast user base, WhatsApp often becomes the primary choice for sharing media with contacts. WhatsApp allows sharing media up to 16 MB size, which is sufficient for short videos (90 seconds to 3 minutes depending on the quality).

But, when you share a large video of more than 16 MB, WhatsApp tries to compress it aggressively to accommodate the video content within 16 MB. And, if it’s still unable to do so, it forces you to trim the video using its built-in video editor. In both cases, you may not get the desired outcome.

How to send a large video to WhatsApp on Android

Due to the lack of adequate analogues - hello Telegram - WhatsApp is the most popular instant messenger in our country and one of the best platforms for sharing media files. People use WhatsApp not only for messaging, but also for sending files to their friends, family, and others. These files can be both photos and audio, and video. However, there is one unpleasant feature in the popular messenger - the limit on the size of the sent file. True, this trouble can be easily bypassed, and we will tell you how to do it in this article.

WhatsApp video file size limit

Although WhatsApp has a wide variety of handy features, they can still be limited by the size of the file you can send. In this regard, it will be better if you know the available file sizes and supported formats.

WhatsApp maximum video size

The maximum video size you can share on WhatsApp is 16 Mm. The WhatsApp video size limit is not that big, but on most phones, the limit is usually between 90 seconds to 3 minutes depending on video quality. The same criterion applies to all media files, including documents.

Supported video formats in WhatsApp

In addition to the limit on the maximum video size, WhatsApp also has a limit on the file format. The various video formats that are supported by WhatsApp include MP4, MKV, AVI, 3GP, and MOV. Support for video and audio codecs also affects support for video files. Your video must be saved using h364 video codec and AAC audio codec in order to be sent to WhatsApp.

How to send a large video on WhatsApp

You may not know, but you can send a video to WhatsApp not only by clicking on the photo icon, but also on the send files icon. In this case, you will have to perform a little more steps, but it's still not at all difficult.

  1. Open a chat with the person(s) you want to send a large video (or other media file or document) to.
  2. In the message box, click on the icon for sending a file with a paperclip image and select "Document" from the menu that appears.
  3. Select the required video from the list of your media files and click on it.
  4. In the confirmation window that appears, click "Submit" and then your video will be sent, but this will take some time, depending on the file size.

This method still has a limitation. It allows you to send a file larger than 16 MB, but, unfortunately, not more than 100 MB. To learn how to send files larger than 100 megabytes, read on.

How to send a large video to WhatsApp

In addition to the above method, there is also an alternative method, and it consists in sending a link to a video that has been previously uploaded to the cloud. Using Google Drive is the best thing you can think of in such a situation, since many people keep backup copies of their files (including videos) in this cloud. What you need to do to send a large file using Google Drive:

  1. Upload files to Google Drive by tapping the "+" icon on the main screen.
  2. Once the file is uploaded to Google Drive, press and hold on it for 1-2 seconds until several options appear on the screen for further action. From these options, select the "Copy Link" option.
  3. Now start WhatsApp and open a chat with the person you want to send the video to. In the text field, press and hold your finger until the options appear, from which you need to select "Paste". The link will allow those you sent it to both watch the video and save it to their device.

Instead of the Google Drive cloud, you can use any similar application that you use yourself. The essence does not change regardless of the application and for sending any large file via WhatsApp, the steps described above will be approximately the same.

WhatsApp (WhatsApp) is a great messenger, but some of its limitations are puzzling to me personally. For example, the 16 MB limit for uploaded video files is beyond common sense. Today, using a real example, I will show you how to send a large video to WhatsApp that is almost half a gigabyte in size.

Of course, we will pre-compress it and send it as a document, because for documents the limit is no longer 16, but as much as 100 MB . But still, this is very small and is only suitable for very short videos in minimal quality.

It is for these and some other reasons that I use other messengers in my work, and not WhatsApp. But I actively use it in everyday life, because WhatsApp is the only messenger in which all my social circles intersect: advanced, not very, and even from parallel worlds. It was these strange people who had never heard of the existence of cloud services that prompted me to write this post.

So I shot a few clips on my iPhone in HD (1080p, 60 fps) , glued them together in iMovie and overlaid an audio track from the default track list in the same place. I got a video with a duration of just over 5 minutes and a size of about 400 MB . Which is quite consistent with the stated parameters of 90 MB for 1 minute of video.

WhatsApp will not let such a file through. Therefore, first we will compress it.

There are no regular tools for this in the iPhone (well, not counting the very primitive ones in iMovie). Therefore, you will have to use third-party software. I used "Video Compressor" (Bulk Video Compressor) from a certain Advantage Inc. - clumsy, with a bunch of ads, but simple, 100% working and free application. I'm sure there are many more similar software for Android.

First of all, go to the settings, and depending on the size of the original video, set the video quality and sound quality: low, medium or high.

I have set both video and sound quality to low.

Bulk Video Compressor settings

Select a video or several videos and click on the plus sign.

Select video in Bulk Video Compressor

After that, encoding starts immediately, you can watch the process in the "Status" tab.

Video processing in Bulk Video Compressor

The app is fast enough even with 4K video, but it just heats up the phone like hell and drains the battery. Consider this if you decide to do this somewhere on the beach or away from the outlet.

Upon completion, the application will tell you how much the compressed file weighs.
In my case, it began to weigh almost 10 times less - 42 MB. In order to keep within the allowable 100 MB, it was most likely possible to set the quality not to low, but to medium, for example.

Saving video in Bulk Video Compressor

But that's not all.

Before sending a new video, be sure to copy it to Files, because files cannot be sent as documents from Photos.

Choose a place to save the object - it can be an iPhone or any other cloud available to you. I saved it to my iPhone.

Save video to Files

Now that's all - open WhatsApp, select a subscriber, press the plus sign, select "Document", find the saved file and send.

Send document to WhatsApp

Done - video size 400 Mb has been compressed to 44 Mb and successfully sent to the recipient directly to WhatsApp.
