Overview of Telegram text formatting options

Telegram has a few basic built-in formatting options that aren’t exactly easy to find. Also, there are simple shortcuts to make your message look the way you intend.

First, let’s see what’s available:

Telegram font styles

There are five different Telegram font styles — bold, italic, strikethrough, underline, and monospace. Also, there is an option of adding a hyperlink. You can’t change the font itself, only its style. Because many people don’t know about these formatting options or use them only sporadically, there is a chance for you to make your messages stand out.

Telegram formatting helps you highlight keywords and set off commands or quotations:

Now, we’ll show you how formatting text in Telegram works.

How to format text in Telegram

Let’s go through all of the essential Telegram font tricks, one method at a time.

Want to create a chatbot?

Design and set up Facebook, WhatsApp, or Telegram chatbots without needing to code with SendPulse. Create message flows including not only text, but images, lists, buttons with a link, and much more.

The built-in Telegram panel

This is the easiest way to play with your Telegram font style, and it works on both desktop and mobile.

To access the panel, select the text you want to format. Then, click on the three-dot menu in the top right corner if you use Android. In iOS, right-click the text and choose “B/U.” And in the desktop version, right-click the text and choose “Formatting.”

After that, you’ll be able to change the style of your selected text or turn it into a hyperlink. Also, nothing is stopping you from combining different font styles.

Hotkeys for Telegram formatting

These simple hotkeys will help you make your text look more professional in no time. They are not Telegram-specific — you can use most of them in other programs and apps when working with text.

Here’s the list of options you have:

  • to make your Telegram text bold, select the text and press Ctrl (Cmd) + B on your keyboard;
  • to use italics in Telegram, select the text and press Ctrl (Cmd) + I;
  • to apply Telegram strikethrough text formatting, select the text and press Ctrl (Cmd) + Shift + X;
  • to underline your text, select it and press Ctrl (Cmd) + U;
  • to make your Telegram font monospaced, select the text and press Ctrl (Cmd) + Shift + M.

You can also add a link using hotkeys — select the text and press Ctrl (Cmd) + K.

Use text formatting on Telegram to create elegant hyperlinks

When inserting a hyperlink, you can remove the preview to give your message a cleaner look before sending it.

Special characters for formatting text in Telegram

Using special characters is a less obvious way to change your Telegram font style, but it’s still more convenient than going the extra mile and copy-pasting a text from another app.

Insert special characters when you write your message, and it’ll be formatted automatically when you send it:

  • enclose your text in double asterisks to make it bold: **text** → text
  • enclose your text in double underscore symbols to make it italic: __text__ → text
  • enclose your text in triple backquote symbols to make it monospaced: “`text“` → text

Advanced way to share formulas and pieces of code on Telegram

Monospaced text is great for highlighting a piece of code, number, address, or a formula in your text. But did you know that it’s also easier to copy? Thanks to another Telegram feature, you can click on any monospaced text, and it’ll be immediately copied to your clipboard. Use this formatting option to share important data with your subscribers faster.

A monospaced font is perfect for code and formulas

How to do Telegram formatting in the web version

If other options aren’t available, your last resort is to use Telegram Markdown — it’s a third-party bot that allows you to turn a “raw” text with HTML tags into a nice formatted text, which you can just copy. No worries, you won’t need to code anything. It works like this:

Remember that you always need to use an opening and a closing tag with your text in between, just like in our examples. Here are the most useful HTML tags for Telegram text formatting in Markdown:

  • your text — bold;
  • your text — italics;
  • your text — underlined;
  • your text — strikethrough.

And here’s the result you get:

Is it the most convenient way? Probably, not. But it’s a simple alternative if, for some reason, you can’t use the methods we’ve described earlier. With the help of this bot, you can format big paragraphs of text by simply adding the right HTML tags where you want them to be.

One more thing

If your business isn’t on Telegram yet, it’s time to change that. Using SendPulse, create your Telegram bot to send messages in bulk and set up automated replies. You can send up to 10,000 messages per month for free. Also, you can enable seamless online payments and turn your chatbot into an effective sales channel. Give it a try!

html - Telegram markdown syntax: Bold *and* italic? (September 2018)

By looking at Telegram’s “Markdown Syntax” Wiki page, it should be relatively easy to create text that is bold and italic.

There, it says that

*this is in italic* and _so is this_ **this is in bold** and __so is this__ ***this is bold and italic*** and ___so is this___

results in

this is in italic and so is this

this is in bold and so is this

this is bold and italic and so is this

.

But using

***this is bold and italic***

results in

*this is bold an italic*

and

___this is bold and italic___

results in

_this is bold an italic_

.

That is: Telegram’s markdown interpretation must have changed.

When programming a Telegram bot, it is possible to use HTML instead of markdown, but I would like to simply write some bold and italic text to my friends while regularly chatting with them.

Using the markdown syntax that is used here does not work. I already tried it.

  • html
  • markdown
  • telegram
  • markup
  • text-formatting

That Wiki page is outdated. Telegram accepts standard Markdown text formatting:

  • Bold: Double * = **hello world**
  • Italic: Double _ = __hello world__
  • Monospace: Triple ` = ```hello world```

1

You can highlight the text and then press the three-dot button in the upper right corner. It will present you with a choice of formatting options. Do it twice and first choose one formatting and then the other. The text will be bold and italic as a result.

ragip's answer seems to work currently. However, for inline monospace, enclose in single backtics (`). Triple backticks are for code blocks. Monospace in Telegram follows the markdown standard.

1. Using the built-in panel

Where works: Android, iOS, Windows, macOS.

The most convenient way to change the font style in Telegram on most platforms is to use the built-in format bar. With its help, you can quickly switch between bold, italic, monospace, strikethrough and underline types, as well as insert links into the text.

This method has one drawback - the panel is not available in the web version of the messenger.

To format text in Android, select it, click on the three dots, and select the desired style.

To change the text in iOS, select it, click on the arrow, then " B I U", then select the desired font style.

To format in Windows or macOS, select the text, right-click on it, hover over the "Formatting" item in the context menu and select the desired style type.

2. Using keyboard shortcuts

Where works: Windows, macOS.

In desktop versions of Telegram, the fastest way to format text is with hotkeys.

  • To make text bold, select it and press Ctrl/Cmd + B.
  • To make text italic, select it and press Ctrl/Cmd + I.
  • To make text underlined, select it and press Ctrl/Cmd + U.
  • To make text fixed-width, select it and press Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + M.
  • To return to normal type, select the text and press Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N.

3. Using special characters

This method can only be useful for the web version of Telegram, since it cannot format text in the above ways. But even with the help of special characters, only two types of style can be included there: bold and italic.

  • To make text bold, surround it with double asterisks. Example: **bold text**.
  • To make text italic, add two underscores immediately before and after it. Example: __italic text__.

4. Using the site 4txt.ru

Where does work: Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, web.

4txt.ru can also be useful for users of the web version of Telegram. But this site allows you to make the text only underlined or strikethrough, the rest of its functions do not affect the style in the messenger.

To format what you have written, open the site 4txt.ru, select the desired style type in the top menu and enter the necessary words in the "Text" field. Then copy the contents of the "Result" field and paste it into the messenger.

Text formatting in Telegram: what happens

By default, all messages in Telegram are written in regular style: regular font without slanting, underlining, and so on. But if necessary, the style can be changed, for example, if you need to highlight a word or phrase in the text.

Options available:

  • italic,
  • bold,
  • monospace,
  • underlined,
  • strikethrough.

How to format text

Depending on which device you use Telegram on, there are three main ways to format text - editing context menu, special characters, and hotkey combinations.

Edit menu

This method works for mobile phones and desktop. Select the desired piece of text, a small menu pops up - in it you select the section with formatting and the desired font style. In the same menu, you can hang a link to the text.

I'll show you the example of an Android phone. Select the desired text, in the pop-up menu, click on the three dots. A list of all available formatting options opens - in addition to styles, there are also options for copying, pasting and creating a hyperlink.

Text formatting in Telegram via the context menu

This method works similarly on all devices, only the appearance of the pop-up menu differs.

Hot keys

If you use Telegram from a computer, it will be convenient to use keyboard shortcuts for formatting. They are easy to remember and faster to use than menus.

Here are combinations for different types of text formatting in Telegram. If you are on Windows, use the Ctrl key; if on MacOS, use the Cmd key.

  • Bold - Ctrl (Cmd) + B
  • Italic - Ctrl (Cmd) + I
  • Underline - Ctrl (Cmd) + U
  • Strikethrough - Ctrl (Cmd) + Shift + X
  • Monospace - Ctrl (Cmd) + Shift + M
  • Hyperlink - Ctrl (Cmd) + K

Symbols

The last way is to wrap the desired text in special characters when typing. Only three styles can be applied this way: bold, italic, and fixed-space.

  • Bold requires two asterisks to the left and right of the fragment. **text** → text
  • For italics, you need two underscores on the left and on the right. __text__ → text
  • To make text monospaced, wrap it in triple apostrophes. “`text“`→ text

Life hack: quick copy using font

In addition to highlighting semantic accents, text formatting in Telegram can be used for a practical purpose. If a piece of text in a message is in monospaced font, it will be copied with one click. You will not need to select the desired text and look for the copy function in the pop-up menu. This feature only works on mobile devices and tablets.

How fast copying monospaced text works

Use a monospace font for the text you want to copy:

  • phone or email number,
  • code snippet,
  • long bank details and so on.

Here's a live example - the Google Sheets channel uses a monospaced font to highlight formulas. Subscribers can easily copy the lines they want.
