How to create a text instagram post

How to Post Text on Instagram Using Create Mode

  • You can post a text-only image on Instagram by accessing the "Create Mode" in Instagram stories.
  • From there, you'll be able to create images with text, with access to other creative tools like gifs and stickers.
  • Once created, you can either save the image for use as a regular post, or simply post it to your stories.
  • Visit Business Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories.

If you've ever seen text-only images on other people's Instagram stories or or posts, you may have wondered exactly how they made those. Are those images made by a third-party app? Or are they something you can do within Instagram?

The answer is text-only images are actually a built-in, if not immediately obvious, feature on the platform. You just have to know where to find it.

Here's how to post images with text on Instagram, either in a story or a post.

How to Create your Own

Instagram
Tara Morris

Text posts have emerged in popularity on Instagram as a way to share funny tweets/written jokes, forge an aesthetic around fonts and words, or reveal a complex thought. Even though a picture is worth a thousand words, sometimes you want to write out exactly what you mean.

In this article, I’ll show you 3 methods to create an Instagram text post with standard, cool, and fancy text. I describe three different approaches to making text posts for Instagram:

  1. Customize text post with Kapwing
  2. Screenshot text
  3. Use Instagram Story tool
Check out our YouTube tutorial for a full walkthrough

Method 1: Create Text Post Using Kapwing

Kapwing is an online tool that allows you to create and customize images and videos. Go to Kapwing homepage and click "Start Editing". If you have a video/photo you want to use as a background, upload it. Otherwise click "Start with a blank canvas."

Kapwing defaults to a white, square canvas. Change the size and background color of the canvas by using the tools in the right-hand column (or tap "Edit background" if you're using your phone).  You can make it 1:1 for Instagram or 9:16 for your Story. You can also enter a custom hex code if you want to make the text or the background match your brand kit.

Click "Text" in the main toolbar to add a text layer to the text post. Tap the text to edit it and type any words or message you'd like to say. You can add multiple text layers and position them relative to each other.

Change the styling of the text using the options in the action panel. You can pick from a library of hundreds of fonts or upload a custom font. It's also possible to change the alignment and line height, bold/italicize, add a background color, and resize the text boxes.

You can select font, fill color, outline color, and paragraph style. Move the text layers on the canvas to create a custom design.

Kapwing's Studio has other design tools to explore. To make your post into an animated text video, browse the library of text effects and animations. Creators can add background shapes, fill colors, and images to emphasize your text. Add line height and drag and drop to position the text where you want it. Check out the variety of shape options available.

You can convert a text post into the video by going to the Timeline. In Timeline, pick the length or duration you want for the output video and time out your text. Then, delay your text so that it appears and disappears.

If your text post is a video you can add animations to your text and add audio using the audio tool in the bottom panel.

You can also choose to make a GIF text post by going to Settings and choosing to output as GIF. Here's an example text post I made with a fade animation and a GIF background.

When you are happy with your text post, click the red "Export" button in the corner. Your image will then be ready to download and post on Instagram.

If you're not signed into a Kapwing account, sign in or sign up using your Google or Facebook account – once you've signed into a Kapwing account, the watermark in the lower right corner will be removed from your final image.

Method 2: Screenshotting Text

You can use any number of apps to write out text, including Notes, Tumblr, or Twitter and then screenshot them to create an image. Screenshots from Notes, iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and Twitter are popular on Instagram, especially for meme makers.

Example text posts from Instagram

To screenshot your screen…

  • …on Android: press and hold power button and volume down at the same time
  • …on old iPhones: press the side button and the home button at the same time
  • …on new iPhones: press the side button and volume up button at the same time

Once you take a screenshot, it’s saved to your camera roll. You can then upload the image to Instagram from your phone and crop or filter the picture.

Method 3: Create Text Post in Instagram

You can use the story feature of Instagram to create text posts. Instagram has some good built in features for creating images. Click the camera in the top left corner of the screen to start and select text from the options.

Add your text by scrolling the bottom panel to the left and clicking. When you are happy with your text click the minimal arrow.

Play with the different setting options to get different background colors or stickers for your image. You can also add a photo/image as a background for your text post.

When you are happy with your post click Add to Story. You can then save your post from your story and delete it by clicking the three dots.

How to make a post on Instagram from your phone using an app or gallery

Do you want to make a post with photos on Instagram, but you have never done it before? Our small but useful guide on this topic may be useful to you.

How to make a post through the Instagram app*

Posting a new post on Instagram* takes a little time and is not difficult. How to add a post to Instagram* from your phone: first you need to go to your profile through the official application, then follow the steps.

  • In the upper right corner, to the left of the three vertical bars, click on the plus sign in the square. It is visible on the main tab (house) or in the profile. If you opened rails or search, they will not have the icon we need.
  • After clicking on the plus sign, the "Create" tab will open. Select "Publish".
You can publish stories in much the same way, but now we are talking about the post
  • Here are files from your gallery that you can select and publish. Up to 10 photos and videos can be uploaded.
  • Select multiple photos and click on the blue Next arrow. It is located in the fourth photo in the upper right corner.
All selected photos will have a blue circle with a number - the order of the photos inside the publication
  • If you don't want to choose ready-made photos from the gallery or there are no suitable ones, you can always take a fresh photo or video. To do this, you need to swipe to the right.
  • When you have chosen a photo that you like best, you can apply any filters, levels of brightness, contrast and saturation to it.
  • You can also edit these photos by changing the contrast, brightness, temperature, etc. If you don't like the result, you can undo the changes, in which case the picture will return to the way it was before editing. You can change all photos in the same way, each in its own way, only part of the frames from the post or not change any photo.
  • After applying filters or editing, you need to click on the blue checkmark in the upper right corner, as shown in the sixth photo.
Instagram* has a variety of filters and photo editing options built in.
  • Next, add a location or tag people in the photo if you like. To do this, select any of these items, for example "add location". How to search for people marked in the photo, we analyzed in the article “How to search for posts and people by hashtags on Instagram *: instructions”.
  • Instagram* will prompt you to find the location. Settlements that are in close proximity to you or the place where you took this photo will appear. For the function to work properly, geolocation must be enabled in the smartphone settings.
  • In this case, you can select any location. No one forbids you to take a photo in a odnushka bathroom in Syzran and add a Monte Carlo geotag. The only question is that it will be quite difficult to find a suitable quality bathroom. On the other hand, bathrooms may well be the same anywhere in the world, right? :–) We talked about locations and hashtags in English in the article "Popular hashtags in English: topics and examples of use." You can peep popular and not only hashtags there.
It's still better to put the correct location, this will help you find the target audience nearby
  • After choosing a geolocation or marking people, you can start writing text to complete the picture. Is your post about something? So tell people about what you feel or suggest.
  • To fill the post in the line "Enter a signature" you need to add a description and hashtags. It is desirable that the caption and hashtags match your post. If the text is large, no problem. We talked about this in the article "Large texts on Instagram *: why are they needed and how to design."
  • So, all manipulations with the future post are completed. Click on the blue tick in the upper right corner, as shown in the picture with number 10.
Among other things, you can share a post on several social networks at once, you just need to move the slider in the right direction. Until this process is completed, the post will not appear in the feed of your friends and followers. Picture 13 shows a finished Instagram post*

We looked at how to post on Instagram* from Android. If you have iOS, the intuitive process will be the same, just some functions will be called differently.

How to post via device gallery

There is another way to post from your phone. This is very convenient, for example, when you scroll through your gallery and find a photo that you urgently need to share with other users.

Step by step how to add a post to Instagram* from your phone through the gallery:

  • We find the "Gallery" of pictures in our phone, open it. We are looking for those photos or videos that we want to publish for our subscribers. At the bottom of the screen in the center there is a "Share" button. On Android, it often looks like an unfinished triangle with circles at the ends.
  • After clicking on the triangle or the "Share" button, social networks, mail and other applications installed on the phone will appear through which you can share the publication.
  • If the system hangs a little after clicking, it's not a big deal. Your phone needs to launch Instagram* to fulfill your request and create a post.
A post on Instagram* is called Instagram* Feed, and a story is called Instagram* Stories, don't mix it up :–)
  • You can apply different filters to a selected frame or several. For each your own filter or one for everyone - just like when publishing simply through the Instagram application *.
Many filters and image editing at your disposal

You can also crop unwanted parts of the frame to make it more accentuated in the right place in the photo. Or do nothing, don't edit, just click on the blue arrow to go to the next block.

You can use any suitable hashtags and geotags of your choice

Our blog has a lot of articles about the benefits of hashtags and how to use them correctly in publications. For example:

  • How to put hashtags in social networks correctly: guide
  • How many hashtags can be put on Instagram* - answer
  • Hashtags for gaining followers on Instagram*: varieties, effectiveness, examples
  • Popular hashtags on Instagram* about children and kindergarten
  • Popular hashtags about nature: how and why to use

And if you just need to quickly find hashtags for publication, you can use our bot "Gennady". You give him a photo or a word for which you need to pick up hashtags, and he gives you a whole cloud of hashtags that can be attached to a post. But we digress. While we were thinking about hashtags, our post has already been published.

The post is ready, you can do other things

Why the photo is not added to the post

Let's say you tried both options, but the photo still doesn't want to be added. What to do in this case? Determine the cause and try to fix it:

  • Out of memory . Sometimes utilities that also run in the background use a lot of device memory. If they don't have enough memory, they don't function properly, malfunction, or become unstable. The application looks normal, but some of the functions do not work. To solve this problem, you need to check the settings and the amount of memory used. Sometimes a simple reboot of the phone helps.
  • Outdated version of application . If you miss several app updates, some features may stop working or start to work incorrectly. To fix this error, download the new version of the application from the Play Market or AppStore.
  • Obsolete version of OS . If the phone's operating system is outdated, some of the functionality may also not work correctly. For the correct operation of the entire device, it is important to update the OS regularly.
  • Unstable internet connection . If you are far away from Wi-Fi or there are too many people using the network, for example in a shopping center, it is better to switch to mobile Internet. If the photo does not load in this case, it is possible that the traffic is running out. The balance can be checked in your personal account on the website or in the application of the mobile operator.
  • Instagram* is blocking the download or the app is crashing . It happens that the post does not allow Instagram itself to be published * due to network congestion or too many users. In this case, you need to try to publish a post a little later.

We have figured out how to post to Instagram* from your phone using the Instagram* app or photo gallery. We talked about how to change settings, edit images and their number, add geotags and tag people. We studied why the photo might not be added to the post, and what to do in each of the cases. You can find more information about Instagram*, posts and promotion in our blog.

How to make a post

  • Title or text on the picture.
  • Text (post content).
  • Text decoration.
  • Basement post.
  • Hashtags.
  • Geolocation.
  • Marks on photo.
  • Let's analyze each item in detail.

    Photo or video

Choosing the right image increases the chances of a post being opened and read by users. It is important to take into account the tastes of your target audience, the theme, mood and general style of the profile design. At the same time, the photo should attract attention, stand out from the background of others.

An image can be an independent element or an addition to text. In the latter case, the photo should explain the meaning of the article to the audience and motivate them to read the post.

You can use a picture as an independent element when it is able to convey the essence of the message without text or is simply relevant to the interests of subscribers.

    General photo guidelines:

    • post high quality photos;
    • use suitable filters;
    • when taking pictures yourself, keep an eye on the light, composition and color;
    • the photograph must evoke emotion;
    • for an advertising post, choose photos of customers with your products and pictures of products during use;
    • prefer the standard square format;
    • maximum size - 1080x1080 px (weight - up to 30 MB).

For videos, the maximum length is one minute. In order to convey the idea you need to the target audience in such a short period of time, you need to carefully consider the content of the video. If you need to upload a video longer than 60 seconds, split it into segments using an app (such as YouCut) and add all the segments to the carousel. You can add text and effects to the video.

You can upload a vertical or landscape video to Instagram, but it's best to stick to a square format. In this case, the video will not occupy almost the entire screen of the mobile device, it will be more convenient for users to like and comment on the content.

    Title (text on the picture)

The title is an important element that can increase the effectiveness of the publication. A capacious, catchy title performs the function of a call to read the entire text. At the same time, it should be short - up to one hundred characters.

To improve engagement, make a headline according to one of 30 working templates:

    1) “_ answers to the question _”

    2) “_ reasons to try _”

    3) “Sensation! _»

    4) «News of the day! _"

    5) "Caution! _”

    6) “Incredible! _"

    7) "Attention! _"

    8) "Free! _"

    9) "Special offer for _"

    10) "Briefly about the main _"

    11) "Find out how I _"

    12) "Are you sure that _?"

    13) “How to make _ with your own hands”

    14) “_ secrets about _”

    15) “_ myths about _”

    16) “_ disadvantages _”

    17) “_ advantages _”

    18) "What is the difference between _ and _?"

    19) "New way _"

    20) "The story of how _"

    21) "Protect your _ with _"

    22) "What to do if _"

    23) "A do you make these mistakes in _?"

    24) "Guaranteed Chance _"

    25) “I say yes _”

    26) “I say no” _”

    27) “Unforgivable mistake _”

    28) “Save time with _”

    29) “Looking for _?"

    30) "_ original ideas for _"

Text added to the picture can play the role of a title. The inscription should be easy to read and be contrasting. For maximum efficiency, discard a long title - it should consist of only a few words.

    Text

Up to 2200 characters can be placed under an Instagram photo - that's enough to tell a whole story. Good content explains the meaning of the picture and encourages the audience to take the targeted actions you need. You can compare the image of the post with a beautiful wrapper, and the text with the candy itself. Do not upset subscribers with an empty wrapper!

Whether the text is read completely depends on the beginning. The introductory part can begin with a description of the problem, a quote, a question, an interesting fact, or a statistic.

Here are some effective opening phrases:

    • “Do you think it’s easy to replace boosters with serum?”
    • "Phytotea helps to lose weight quickly without fitness - more than 300 positive reviews"
    • "Just imagine that you can make your site successful without financial investment"
    • "You've heard this advice hundreds of times, but it really works"
    • "Good News: New Marvel Movie Trailer Released"

In the main part of an entertaining publication, you should talk about the solution to the problem, a possible alternative. About what helped in finding an answer to a question, or just developing a topic. If we are talking about a selling post, tell us about the properties/benefits of the product or service. Explain how the problem will be solved.

The final part can be a conclusion, a question or an appeal. Communicate with the audience in their familiar language. Write in a living language without cliches and clichés. Proofread the text after writing in order to correct inaccuracies and errors in time.

    Text styling

To make the text better perceived and easier to read, take care of formatting.

Make paragraphs every 4-5 sentences, separating them from each other with an emoji and a hidden space (it is in the mobile version).

Add lists. For decoration, use dashes, arrows, emoji. Highlight subheadings in capital letters, emoji, dashes. They can also be written in a different font.

    Post footer

The bottom of the post can include contact details and prices. Call-to-Action works well to engage the audience and increase sales.

A call to action could be:

    1. "Subscribe to the profile to stay up to date."
    2. "Buy today and get 20% off."
    3. “Write to Direct right now to guarantee an order at the old price. Quantity is limited."
    4. “Hurry up and visit the site to read the new article. Link in description.
    5. “Do you agree with this conviction? Share your opinion in the comments!
    6. "Like if you liked the post."

    Hashtags

Needed to attract a new audience and expand coverage. Although you can post up to 30 tags under each post, it's best to limit yourself to 5-8 tags.

For the right selection, you can see which hashtags are used by popular profiles of similar topics. You can also parse your content into its component parts. So, tags 9 are suitable for a picture from a seaside vacation0014 #rest on the sea, #beach, #summer, #sea .

We recommend choosing hashtags of the first, second and third levels for each publication - different in popularity and lifetime. You can also add your branded hashtag to your posts.

    Geolocation

Initially, this option must be added to Facebook, and then in the Instagram settings. It allows you to collect target audience by geo using services, launch mass liking based on geotags. In addition, thanks to geolocation, customers can easily find your office, cafe or store. And also the coverage of the post will increase due to the demonstration to users who are near the specified place.
