One of the most famous messaging apps available on the market today, for both Android and iOS users, WhatsApp continues to dominate and is found in virtually every smartphone available.
The free price tag is something that no one can ignore, the features that come with it and the user-friendly interface is something most people like using.
The best part is, without any fees to send a message, video, photo or such, it's become used almost more than text messages and emails, all you need is an active data plan or wifi and you can pretty much send messages back and forth, and nowadays who doesn't have access to the internet?
As amazing as that is, it's easy to get the virtual inbox pretty full, especially if the memory of your phone is already in the red and when that happens, you tend to start deleting indiscriminately.
This doesn't just happen for WhatsApp, it can also be done to your regular messages, photos, videos and so much more.
Plus, with the steps of how to recover old WhatsApp chats in 2022 mentioned above, you will have a better experience on the app.
Do you need to recover deleted or missing WhatsApp messages? It's certainly possible, depending on the situation.
Below, you'll learn how to recover deleted WhatsApp messages on your iPhone or Android device. We'll then teach you how to set up an advanced WhatsApp backup plan to ensure you never lose any of your WhatsApp messages again.
In order to retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages, you must have enabled Chat Backup in the app's settings. To reach this, tap the Settings tab. It's on the bottom bar of the iPhone app; on Android, open the three-dot menu at the top-right and choose Settings.
From there, head to Chats > Chat backup. Here (under Auto Backup on iOS and Back up to Google Drive on Android), the app offers several backup frequencies (along with the option to encrypt your WhatsApp backups):

On Android, WhatsApp makes a local backup every night, but this won't help you if you lose your phone.
This is why cloud backups are vital.
WhatsApp deletes older backup files as you create new ones. The iPhone app only keeps the latest backup file, while the Android version keeps "up to the last seven days' worth" of backup files. Keep that in mind as you choose the right backup frequency for your needs.
By having daily auto-backups, you'll be able to easily recover WhatsApp messages soon after deleting them. On the other hand, weekly auto-backups will allow you to go further back in time to recover deleted WhatsApp messages, at the expense of losing recent chat messages.
For a more advanced backup plan for Android devices, scroll down to the "An Advanced WhatsApp Backup Strategy for Android" section below.
Before we look at recovering deleted WhatsApp messages, there's a chance that you might have just archived a missing chat, not deleted it. But what's the difference?
Archiving removes the chat from your list, allowing you to hide conversations that you're done with for now.
You can unarchive a chat at any time to access it again, and archiving doesn't delete anything in the chat. Conversely, deleting a chat erases its contents, so they're no longer accessible to you.
On iPhone, when you archive a chat, you can immediately reverse the archival by shaking your device and choosing Undo to recover the archived chat. But even if you miss this, it's easy to retrieve archived WhatsApp chats later.

Wondering how to get back deleted WhatsApp messages after backing them up? You can restore your WhatsApp backup by simply uninstalling and reinstalling WhatsApp on your device.
When you reinstall the app, you will be prompted to restore your message history from the backup file. Tap Restore and you'll retrieve everything from the latest backup. Make sure to do it when prompted, as you can't restore the backup file later.
This method of recovering deleted WhatsApp messages works on both Android and iPhone, as long as you have a backup. Keep in mind that you can only recover backed-up messages within your selected auto-backup frequency, however.
For instance, if you've set the app to back up daily, you can recover any deleted chats before the next daily backup occurs.
But if the app has made a new backup since you deleted certain messages, they're lost for good.
Hopefully, restoring your backup file allowed you to retrieve any deleted media from your chats. If that didn't work, however, read our guide to recovering deleted photos from WhatsApp.
On Android, you can simply open a file explorer app and navigate to /WhatsApp/Media. From there, simply sift through the folders until you find the deleted photos you want to recover.
On iPhone, you should have a backup copy of images saved to your device if you have the Save to Camera Roll option enabled at Settings > Chats in WhatsApp.
Check the above guide for additional methods of media recovery.
Getting deleted messages back after a new WhatsApp backup has run is slightly more difficult. Your success will depend on your selected auto-backup frequency.
Note that the below strategy only works on Android devices, since the OS lets you access local backup files. If you're using an iPhone, your only other method is to restore an iPhone backup that you made before deleting the WhatsApp chats. There are third-party apps that claim to help you recover WhatsApp chats, but they aren't cheap and offer no guarantees. Whether you use these is up to how much you value the missing messages.
Before we dive into the process, here's an overview of restoring older WhatsApp chats on Android:
As mentioned before, WhatsApp on Android retains several days of chat backup files. One is, of course, the latest chat backup. The others, depending on your auto-backup frequency, could be one day or many days old. In addition to the Google Drive cloud backup, WhatsApp stores these backups on your device's local storage.
Open your device's file explorer app (Files by Google is a good option if you don't have one installed), and navigate to /WhatsApp/Databases. Depending on your device, the WhatsApp folder may appear under /sdcard/, /storage/, Internal Memory, or similar.
Within that WhatsApp folder, you'll find the various chat backup files. The latest one is named msgstore.db.crypt12, while the others look like msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.
1.db.crypt12. As you'd expect, YYYY-MM-DD represents the year, month, and date (respectively) that the backup file was created.
To retrieve WhatsApp messages deleted sometime between two backups, simply do the following:

After this, uninstall WhatsApp. If you've enabled Google Drive cloud backups, open the Google Drive app, slide out the left menu, and select Backups. You'll see a WhatsApp backup file with your phone number in it. Tap the three-dot Menu to the right of this and choose Delete backup to erase it.
Doing this prevents WhatsApp from using the backup file in Google Drive instead of the local file you want to restore.

Now, reinstall WhatsApp from the Play Store. During the setup process, you'll be prompted to restore from the backup file you've just tweaked—it will show as X days old instead of the most recent backup file. Confirm restoration from this file.
That's all you have to do in order to retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages from older backups. Once you've restored those messages, feel free to start using WhatsApp as normal again.
When you walk through the above, you'll lose any messages created since the backup you restored. If you only performed that process to restore a few deleted messages, and don't want to lose recent messages, you can export the retrieved chat messages and then restore WhatsApp to the latest backup.
You'll have to run through the entire process again, but it's not difficult.
To export messages, open the chat containing the messages you want to save. Tap the three-dot Menu button at the top-right, followed by More > Export chat. If the chat has media, you'll see an option to export Without media or to Include media.
Including media will add all recent images as attachments, which obviously increases the size of the export file. You can export up to 10,000 messages with media, or 40,000 messages without media.
After you make your choice, choose an app on your phone to share the text file (and attachments, if applicable) containing your messages. You can email this to yourself, add it to cloud storage, or similar. Repeat this for any other chats with messages you want to save.

Once you're done exporting, follow the steps in the above section again to access your WhatsApp backups.
When you come to renaming the backup files, reverse the process:
Uninstall WhatsApp, delete your Google Drive backup again if needed, and reinstall the app. After you restore from backup, your latest chats will reappear. The messages you exported won't appear inside WhatsApp, but you can at least see them in the text file whenever you need them.
Because you can easily view and edit WhatsApp chat backup files on Android, it's easy to manipulate them. Renaming them allows you to keep as many backup files as you want.
All you need to do is rename a backup in the msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 format to something else, such as oct11.db.crypt12 or 2021-June-Backup. Because this file doesn't use WhatsApp's naming convention, it's now protected from WhatsApp overwriting it.
Consider creating your own backup file in this way once every month or so. That way, you won't lose tons of messages if you have to restore from an older backup. For even more safety, you should copy these backup files to cloud storage or your computer so that they're safe in case your phone stops working or you lose it.
As you can see, it's fairly easy to recover deleted WhatsApp messages. However, this is only the case if you've backed up your messages ahead of time. This is why the advanced backup strategy is worth setting up if you're an Android user. iPhone owners don't have as many options.
Now that you know you won't lose any WhatsApp messages in the future, it's a good idea to discover some of WhatsApp's other cool features that aren't immediately visible.
Whatsapp is an application that we all actively use and thanks to which we save significant amounts on calls and SMS. Not surprisingly, the number of people who have downloaded it to their phones has already exceeded one billion. Today we will learn where the messages sent and received by us are stored, how to hide them from the screen, and also how you can view the archive in WhatsApp.
All messages received and sent using this service are exclusively on devices, and are deleted on the company's servers immediately after they reach the addressee. But what to do when there are too many chats on the screen? They can be archived, that is, temporarily hidden from the screen.
It's very easy to archive a WhatsApp chat. You can remove those chats that you do not use very often, as well as some group correspondence.
Then, when necessary, you can view the archived chats and return them to the main page of the application again.
You should know that archiving in this case means only temporary hiding of correspondence with a person. In this way, you can neither save your correspondence as a backup copy, nor delete it.
You can read about that in our other article.
On different phone models, archiving is carried out with slight differences. Below we will provide ways to archive and then search for archives on iPhone and Android. Keep in mind that when you receive a new message from a hidden contact, the archived chat will reappear on the screen.
Select the chat you want to hide and long press on it to bring up the menu at the top of the screen. The archive icon looks like a white square with a green arrow pointing down inside. Touch it and the correspondence with this contact will be hidden.
To hide all chats at once, go to the WhatsApp menu and select settings. After opening the "Chats" item, tap the "Chat History" line, then "Archive all chats".
To find out what kind of conversations are hidden in your application, scroll to the end of your chat list and, when you see the inscription "Archived chats", tap it.
To hide all conversations from the WhatsApp screen, go to the application settings and tap the "Chats" line. Select the "Archive all chats" option.
If you want to hide a conversation with a certain person from the screen, select the chat you want to hide and swipe it from right to left with your finger. From the options provided, select the "Archive" option.
You can understand where the WhatsApp archive is on your iPhone by simply scrolling through the list of chats to the end, and then sliding your finger down the screen. When you see the inscription "Archive", click on it.
Several chats can be distinguished:

Dear readers, today we will discuss with you how to restore correspondence in WhatsApp and how to recover deleted messages. Where is your chat stored? It all depends, of course, on the type of device you are using. For example, on Android smartphones, correspondence can be copied to a memory card, internal storage, or Google drive.
Archive with correspondence is stored in several places at once
Naturally, the choice of data storage location is in favor of cloud storage, as the risk of data loss is reduced. In the first two cases, you can be left without your information: sometimes backups on a memory card or phone are damaged.
Let's say right away that for all cases a cloud storage system is used, which is set by default as a standard one. Copies are created daily at a specific time and kept for seven days. That is, if you logged in for the last time before your copy was created, then messages received after this time cannot be restored.
You can use the data recovery system for exactly 7 days
It is also worth considering the fact that if you created a copy, deleted the application and did not restore messages within eight days, they will be deleted. This is true for those who do not use the cloud. In order to restore the correspondence, you need:
Here you need to take into account that if you write a different number from the one on which the backup was saved, then there is a possibility that the system will not offer you a backup. The same goes for cloud storage accounts, only here everything is much stricter: using a different Apple ID, for example, you will not be able to restore anything on your iPhone.
If you do not use the cloud type of storage for your messages and chats, then you can return the deleted data in a different way. This is relevant for users of devices running the Android operating system.
For example, when transferring information to another phone. To do this, just copy the backup file stored in the /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases folder to the same folder on the new device. If the necessary information is not here, then it is likely that the data is stored in the phone itself or on Google Drive. In the first case, you need to check for documents in the same Databases folder only in the internal or main memory of the smartphone. In the second, you need to use the instructions above.
Web client available on phone and PC
Please note that if any sectors of the memory where the backup was located are damaged, you will also not be able to return the lost messages.
The utility is very popular among users
Today we have learned a lot of new things in terms of using the messenger: how to restore a chat, messages or correspondence in WhatsApp. We also answered the most popular questions regarding the recovery of this data in the program. Summing up, we can briefly describe this process:
We hope our advice helped you recover the necessary data
We hope that everything worked out for you and there are no questions left. Share your successes in the comments. How do you copy messages to WhatsApp - iCloud, Google drive, OneDrive or external storage?
If you accidentally delete a WhatsApp conversation, don't worry - you can quickly restore it using an automatically created backup.
Copies are created every night and stored in the memory of the mobile device. The amount of available storage space is limited, so old backup files are overwritten with new data.
If you accidentally deleted a chat, you need to reinstall WhatsApp and, when turned on, press the "Restore" button in response to the offer to return the lost correspondence.
Depending on the WhatsApp settings, the backup file will be restored from the mobile device memory, Google Drive (for Android) or iCloud (for iPhone). You can manually specify the storage location and the frequency of copying in which messages will be sent in the application settings.
This method may not work - there are several reasons for this:
If you encounter one of the listed problems, you will not be able to return the deleted chat.
Messages are not stored on WhatsApp servers, so it is pointless to contact the support service with a request to restore the correspondence. You can ask to forward the necessary messages of the user with whom you deleted the chat in order to return at least some of the information.
iPhone owners have another option to get back their lost correspondence - you can restore the device from a backup created in iTunes. As a result of this action, the chat will take the form that it had at the time the copy was created. All SMS sent and received after this moment will be deleted. But they can be saved if you first create another file with the history of correspondence.
If you want to restore a chat from a backup that was made a long time ago (not the latest), then you will need a file manager to find and rename the desired file. When returning old SMS, new messages will be overwritten, but it is possible to save them if you manually create a backup file (this is described in detail below).
Reinstall the application. If you are notified that your chat history has been found, click Restore.
In order not to worry that deleted messages cannot be returned, you can make a backup copy of them. In WhatsApp, this is possible thanks to a special function:
Back up can be saved in the memory of a mobile device, sent by mail or placed on Google Drive cloud storage. To return the dialogs that were saved in memory, you need to uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.

Surely, many of you use the popular and convenient Whatsapp messenger, which allows you to communicate with all subscribers in your address book for free, provided that they also have this application installed. But what to do if your chat history is deleted or you accidentally erased an important message? A restore may also be required after resetting the phone to factory settings. The main thing - do not despair, there is a way out, and more about it in today's article.
For clarity, let's consider the recovery process in today's popular mobile operating systems such as iOS, Android and Windows phone.
It is important to remember that the messenger automatically backs up the entire history of correspondence and places it on the built-in memory card of your phone. Therefore, in order to return all the data from this copy, simply uninstall and reinstall the application.
During the installation process, you will be prompted to restore all chats. If this does not happen, then the memory card may be damaged or you are using different phone numbers. You also need to know that recovery is possible only from a backup copy no older than 7 days.
Downloading older message histories is also possible, provided that Whatsapp backup is configured and all messages are saved every 7 days. Also keep in mind that restoring the old version will delete all unbacked messages.
In order to download the required version of the saved correspondence, delete the messenger, then go using any file manager to the directory: your memory card/Whatsapp/database (there will be several, choose the required date). The backup file is named msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt, where the capital letters are the date of the backup. The required file must be renamed to msgstore.db.crypt, removing the date from its name. Then install the application again, and you will be prompted to restore all the information.
Chat information is not stored on Whatsapp servers, so you can only restore it from a backup saved in iCloud. You can always do this operation manually to protect yourself from losing important messages. To do this, in the application settings, select the item - "Chat settings" -\u003e "Copy" - and create a copy. There is also an option for automatic creation.
For a reverse restore operation, ensure that the backups are in place, then uninstall the application and reinstall it. All history will be restored using iCloud. It is important to remember that you must use the same phone number.
Another way to save Whatsapp correspondence is to send all the data to yourself by e-mail. To do this, open the application, select the chat and the contacts you are interested in, find the "Send by mail" option, attach the necessary files, enter your email address. A copy of the correspondence will be sent to the specified e-mail.
That's all, good luck!
The creators of WhatsApp are actively developing the messenger, realizing the lack of some features compared to Telegram and Viber, two main competitors. The functions that are planned to be introduced in the application this year are in the material of Gazeta.Ru.
According to the WABetaInfo portal, which specializes in news about app improvements, developers are discussing the emergence of a new mode in WhatsApp - similar to TikTok or Reels (short clips with endless scrolling on Instagram).
According to unofficial information, a separate place in the application interface will be allocated for such content.
It is believed that users will be able to watch Reels directly from the application, and not content specially created for WhatsApp. Thus, such videos will be available without going to Instagram.
According to experts, the owner of the messenger, Meta (formerly Facebook), is introducing such features in order to complete the plan to unify all of its large applications.
Currently, WhatsApp messenger can only be logged out by deleting the account or application. But the developers are already working on a more convenient configuration of this function.
The updated logout of WhatsApp will replace the "Delete Account" button and will support multi-device mode. For example, log out on one device and continue working on another.
The option will allow users to log out of WhatsApp accounts from their devices, just like in Facebook and other social networking applications.
The feature is currently in beta testing. However, messenger fans have repeatedly criticized the platform for the extremely difficult mode of setting up the same account on different devices, so the introduction of the function is expected soon.
Many WhatsApp users have experienced the fact that they sent a message and would like to delete it after some time. Messenger users have only very little time to delete a message in the chat for everyone, and not just in their own correspondence.
WhatsApp currently has a strict limit - after 68 minutes and 16 seconds after sending, the message remains in the chat forever.
The author will only be able to delete it on their own device, the other chat participant will continue to see it.
However, this restriction is planned to be lifted very soon. According to unofficial information, unlimited deletion has already been tested in beta mode and is planned to be introduced in official WhatsApp updates in the near future.
Currently, users can hide their last seen time on WhatsApp, but for everyone at once, not just for specific contacts or groups of users.
However, developers are already working on this setting. It is expected that when you select "Show the last time of the visit", the option "All my contacts except" will appear.
By selecting the option, the user will be able to include in the personal ban those to whom he would not like to show his presence in the messenger.
It is believed that the development is carried out in connection with the company's plans to increase the number of privacy settings inside the messenger and promote it as a more secure messaging application.
A separate new feature called “Community” is planned for groups within the application. It is a variation of its own social networks within the WhatsApp messenger.
The function will be close in meaning to how Facebook groups work. Several groups can be located within the same community, and it will also be possible to create a separate channel for administrator messages.
At the same time, community posts can also contain response chains, like those of Telegram.
Pavel Durov's messenger allows you to send a series of replies to certain messages in your own channel.
WhatsApp is coming with a Read Later feature that is rumored to be an improved version of Messenger's already existing archived chat feature.
According to testers, when a chat is moved to Read Later, WhatsApp will not send new message notifications for that chat.
In addition, the function will include a "Vacation Mode" that will save messages in chats for a long time, so that the user can then easily retrieve and read them.
Read Later will also have an edit button that allows you to customize the message storage options. For example, users can select multiple chats at once to quickly unzip all of them.
The ability to use WhatsApp on multiple devices without the need to constantly connect to a smartphone is highly demanded by users. This feature has already appeared in beta testing format.
