What tricks cybercriminals use when hunting for users of popular instant messengers - in the material of Gazeta. Ru.

Fraudsters on WhatsApp and other popular instant messengers use social engineering methods to force the victim to commit actions that pose a danger to his device, as well as his bank account, told the agency " Prime "deputy head of Roskachestvo Ilya Loevsky. For example, criminals often make mass mailings with various profitable offers or lotteries in order to encourage the user to take part and follow the infected link or download a suspicious file.

“As a rule, attackers use big names of companies, for example, Google, Apple, Facebook, hot topics, like now COVID-19, or super-lucrative offers (last year it was a “promotion” about 1000 free gigabytes of Internet for the 10th anniversary service). It is not uncommon for scammers to forge official WhatsApp profiles by copying the name and design,” Loevsky explained.

According to the expert, forwarding such messages to your contacts is undesirable, as it only contributes to the spread of fraud.

At the same time, after clicking on a malicious link, anything can happen to the victim - from the theft of personal data to the withdrawal of funds from their card.

“If you are asked to provide purely personal information, such as bank card number, accounts, date of birth, passwords, this is a trap. No one will ever ask you for such data out of good intentions,” the expert warns.

In June 2020, ESET reported a phishing attack targeting WhatsApp and Telegram instant messengers. Users received messages inviting them to fill out a questionnaire and receive four kegs of beer from a well-known brand as a gift.

One of the conditions for participation in the action was the mandatory forwarding of the message to ten contacts in WhatsApp.

“If the victim does share with contacts, he will be redirected to other web pages that are not related to the beer brand.

Most often there are offers to download extensions for browsers and other programs. All of them can be harmful.

Even if the fake campaign itself does not spread viruses, the victim is almost always directed to a website with dangerous content at the end. At the same time, the downloaded files can turn the device into a part of a botnet, spy on the user, and even block the device and demand a ransom for restoring access,” ESET said in a press release received by Gazeta.Ru.

In January of this year, a similar phishing attack was launched against WhatsApp users, luring victims with messages that a well-known sports brand was celebrating an anniversary and giving away T-shirts and shoes. To receive gifts, users were encouraged to follow the link. In case of suspicions about the legitimacy of such prize draws, cybersecurity experts recommend carefully checking the links attached to the messages - they must correspond to the addresses of the official websites of real companies. In addition, you can go to the brand's web resource yourself using a browser to find additional information about the promotion.
