How to log out of Facebook Messenger
So you've gone through every tab in the Facebook Messenger app looking for a logout option with no luck. What gives?
For some reason, Facebook designed the Messenger app so that you can't log out - at least not with the direct logout option available in the app. However, there are a few tricks you can use to disable your account from the Messenger app (which is basically the equivalent of logging out) without having to remove the app from your device.
Here are three basic ways to effectively log out of the Messenger app on your Android or iOS device.
Sign out of Messenger on an Android device
Android users have an advantage over iOS users due to the app settings that are available to them. With this particular method, you don't even need to access the official Facebook app or Messenger because everything can be done in your app's settings.
This process should work equally well on Android devices from Samsung, Google, HTC, etc.
-
Click "Settings" app to access the settings of your android device.
-
Scroll down and tap Applications option.
-
Scroll through the list of apps you have installed until you see messenger and click it.
-
Now that you're in the App Info tab for Messenger, you can press Storage location variant.
-
Under the storage details list, click the Clear data button.
That's it. You can now close the Settings app and return to the Messenger app to see if it works. If you followed all the steps above, you should find that your account has been successfully disabled (logged out) from Messenger.
Sign out of Messenger on your iOS or Android device from the Facebook app
Unfortunately for iOS users, the above Android method does not work on iPhone or iPad. Despite accessing the iOS device settings and selecting Messenger from the list of apps in a similar way to Android, there are no storage settings in the Messenger app settings for iOS.
As a result, your only option to log out of Messenger from an iOS device is to use the official Facebook app. If you only use Messenger and not Facebook on your device, you'll need to download and install it first.
The following method also works with the Facebook Android app if you prefer to log out of Messenger for Android this way as an alternative to the method above.
-
Open the Facebook app on your device and sign in to the corresponding account you want to disconnect from Messenger.
-
Press menu item (represented by the hamburger icon located at the bottom of the screen, from the home channel tab on iOS and at the top of the screen on Android).
-
Scroll down and click Settings and Privilege > Settings .
-
Press Security and login .
-
In the section labeled Where did you log in? , you will see a list of all devices and their locations where Facebook remembers that you are a login. Your device name (such as iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.) will be bolded with messenger platform labeled underneath.
-
If you don't see your device name with the Messenger tag right after, you may need to click Learn more to see more devices and platforms you're signed in on.
-
Click three dots to the left of the device + list and select Log out . The list will disappear from the list of places you are logged in and you can open the Messenger app to confirm that your account has been disabled/logged out.
Sign out of Messenger on your iOS or Android device with Facebook.com
If you don't want to experience the hassle of downloading the Facebook app to your device because you don't have it yet, you can simply sign in to Facebook.com from the web. browser and disconnect your account from Messenger in this way. The steps are very similar in that you do it through the Facebook mobile app.
-
Visit Facebook.com in a web browser and sign in to the appropriate account you want to disconnect from Messenger.
-
Click down arrow in the top right corner of the page and select settings from the drop-down menu.
-
Click Security and Login from the sidebar menu.
-
In the section labeled Where did you go, l ook for the name of your device (iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.) and messenger below it.
