How to watch a game on facebook live

How to Stream Sports on Facebook Live

Why do video?

When you think of "livestream sports," you probably tend to think of live, full-game coverage with an announcer and play-by-play commentary. As an athletic director or coach, you know that fans look at channels like ESPN as the model for live sports video content. So, if you're going to promote video of your team, you want to be as close to that level as you can get. As a media provider or journalist, you have many of the same goals.

Streaming games on platforms like Facebook Live allows students, alumni, and fans to be in the moment with the rest of the crowd, no matter where they are. You can also stream video updates before, during, and after a game. Doing Facebook Live videos lets fans, and your team, go back and watch later. Teams can use this saved video to elevate their game by giving a reference point for what went well and where there are areas for improvement.

Mobile Social Video Impact

Millions of people watch live sports — more than ever before. About 150 million Americans watched live sports at least once monthly in 2019, and the way people consume live sports has changed dramatically. In recent years, platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have made big pushes into live video for professional sports on their social platforms.

Professional leagues are moving to social live video as a way to complement their existing coverage and enable more people to watch and participate in new and exciting ways. Now using Facebook Live, and tools like Switcher Studio, any recreation league, youth team, high school, or college can broadcast coverage of their sports events on the same platforms, straight from their phones.

Score Big with these Ideas for Sports Videos

Streaming video of your games can seem like a big undertaking. In some cases, teams may even be concerned that streaming their games will result in fewer people at the gate. However, if ESPN has taught us anything it’s that the easier you make it for people to watch games and get information, the stronger their relationship and engagement with the team will be. There are also a ton of opportunities to provide valuable live content to fans outside of game time.

Sports livestream ideas:

  • Teaser videos of team match-ups
  • Highlighting player and team accomplishments leading up to a game
  • Half-time recaps
  • Post-game coverage
  • Interviews with the team and coach

Getting Started

You don’t have to go straight for doing a livestream of the entire game. It’s easy to do a few segments for pregame, halftime, and post-game updates using Switcher Studio.

When to stream outside of game time:

  • Pregame: Start with a graphic of the two teams and the start time.  Have the talent talk about the game, who's playing, and where is it being played. Discuss key points of the game to set the scene for those who might not be able to be there in person.  End with the title graphic again.  This is a good time to use a handheld mic to pick up the reporter’s voice better, especially since there's often "pump-up" music and crowd noise.
  • Halftime:  Create a graphic with the team logos and halftime scores right before you go live, or use Switcher's built-in and customizable scoreboard asset.  This will give your live viewers a more real-time experience of the game that is going on.
  • Post-game: Often after the game, teams will hold a press conference with players and coaches.  This is a good time to get your Switcher set up on a tripod in the room and stream to all fans on Facebook, even if they were in the stands watching the game.

All you need to get started is:
  • iPhone or iOS device
  • Tripod
  • Phone Clip for Tripod
  • Mobile Mic (we recommend the iRig HD handheld microphone)

Now you're all set!

  1. Launch Facebook or Switcher Studio
  2. Create your event, add a title and description
  3. When you're ready to go live, start your broadcast

What Could it Look Like?

Here is an example of a video streamed on Facebook Live at Bellarmine University during the NCAA DII playoffs using Switcher Studio.

How to Stream Games to Facebook Live

Facebook Live isn't just for vlogging and funny cat videos -- it's also becoming a viable Twitch alternative for aspiring video game streamers.

The massive social network now allows anyone with a Facebook account to go live via external sources from a PC, meaning you can use your streaming app of choice to create professional-grade broadcasts that instantly get blasted to your hundreds of Facebook friends.

You'll need to know how to use a streaming app such as OBS or XSplit to take advantage of this feature. For a detailed breakdown of those apps, check out our Twitch streaming tutorial — the steps are largely the same; you'll just be sending your feed to Facebook instead of Twitch.

If you're looking to share your gameplay antics directly to your Facebook feed, here's how to get started.

1. Visit Facebook.com/live/create and click Create Live Stream.

2. Choose where you want your stream posted (such as on your timeline or in a group) and click Next.

3. Copy the stream key and (if needed) the server URL into your streaming app of choice. For OBS and XSplit, you can do this in the Settings menu.

4. Give your stream a name, and specify the game you're playing.

5. Click Start Streaming in your streaming app of choice. For this tutorial, I'm using OBS Studio. If you need help setting up your streaming app, click here.

6. Once you see a preview of your stream on Facebook, click Go Live.

You're now live on Facebook, where your friends can watch you take out the competition in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, scare yourself silly in Resident Evil 7 or play whatever else you're in the mood for. You'll be able to monitor your chat room right from Facebook, and can see a feed of your stream to make sure everything's working properly. You can also download videos of your broadcasts once they've ended.

Keep in mind that this isn't the only way to go live on Facebook. Blizzard games such as Overwatch and Hearthstone have built-in Facebook Live integration, and Nvidia's GeForce Experience lets you broadcast just about any PC game to the social network with a few clicks.

While these options are more convenient, using external sources is the way to go for aspiring pros who want to fine tune the look and feel of their broadcasts with overlays, multiple camera angles and more.

(Warning: Facebook Live has been used to broadcast murders, sexual assaults, and suicides. Although rare, we recommend monitoring what your kids are watching.)

Why is Facebook Live so popular?

Facebook Live has been available to some users since mid-2016, and became available to everyone in January 2017.

The platform quickly grew in popularity, and it's easy to see why:

  • On average, live video gets six times more attention than regular video.
  • Facebook Live videos get 10 times more comments than regular videos.
  • Users watch Facebook Live videos three times longer than uploaded videos.

All of this means that one in every five new Facebook videos is now a live video, with live video reaching billions of views a day.

Watch Facebook Live in your News Feed

If someone you're connected to on Facebook (such as a friend, page, group, or celebrity you follow) decides to stream on Facebook Live, their video will appear on your news feed.

However, this is not a particularly satisfactory way to search for content. The method relies on several variables:

  • You need some form of Facebook relationship with a person or entity.
  • Facebook algorithms should show you videos in your news feed.
  • You must be on Facebook when the other person is filming.

How to Watch Facebook Live on Desktop

If you want a more efficient way to set up Facebook Live Video from your desktop, you have two options.

1. Use the navigation bar

The most common way to access Facebook Live videos is by using the dedicated link in the navigation bar on the left side of your Facebook News Feed.

You will find a link called "Live Video" in the "Overview" section. You may need to click on Show more to open it.

Clicking on the link will take you directly to the Live Watch section of Facebook. Scroll down the page to find sections for popular live videos, news and games.

2. Use the URL

You can save time and go directly to Facebook Live from anywhere on the web by entering the service's URL in your browser's address bar. The URL is facebook.com/live, you will be taken to the same page as the navigation method described above.

Sorry, you can no longer see the Facebook Live map. You used to be able to find nearby broadcasts thanks to the blue dots on the map for your local area, but Facebook disabled this feature in June 2019, citing "low usage".

How to watch Facebook Live on Android

If you want to watch Facebook Live on your Android device, you can go back to your news feed or use the dedicated link.

To find the highlighted link, open Facebook and follow the instructions below:

  1. Click on the "More" tab (three horizontal lines) in the upper right corner of the app.
  2. Scroll down and click on Live Video.
  3. Select the video you want to watch.

How to watch Facebook Live on iOS

The process of watching Facebook Live video on iOS is basically the same as on Android.

Follow these steps to get started:

  1. Open the Facebook app.
  2. Click on the Advanced tab in the lower right corner.
  3. Scroll down and click on Live Video.
  4. Select the video you want to watch.

Other Ways to Find Live Video on Facebook

If you can't find what you're looking for using the Live Video links as described above, there are several other ways to find Live Facebook videos to watch.

Enable live video notifications

One of the best ways to make sure you never miss a live stream from someone you follow is to turn on live video notifications.

To enable notifications for Facebook Live, click the small arrow in the top right corner of your Facebook desktop, then go to Settings > Notifications > Videos and toggle the switch to On.

Note: Follow the reverse steps if you want to turn off Facebook Live notifications.

Use hashtags

Facebook Live streamers have adopted the #live hashtag to indicate when they are live. Of course, not every live streamer uses it, but it's a good way to find specific videos.

You can search by hashtag using the search bar at the top of the home screen on your desktop. You can even add other words, for example #live Fortnite will display videos of people playing the game.

Ask people to share live videos with you on Facebook

Like all content on Facebook, there is an internal "Share" button that you can use to share content with other users.

If your friends have similar interests, tell them to share live video with you on Facebook when they find something worthwhile.

How to watch old Facebook Live videos

When someone finishes recording a Facebook Live video, they can save the content and add it to their profile for posterity (although that person can disable this feature).

This means you can scroll through a person's timeline and find old Facebook live videos. When you click on an old video, all of its old broadcasts are automatically downloaded into one playlist, which you can then view.

Warning: You may find adult content on Facebook Live

Facebook Live does occasionally host adult or inappropriate videos, including pornography, violence, and other disgusting content.

Some of them are unscheduled and can be submitted in the "Danger of Live TV" category. However, some of them are very planned and heavily promoted in the darkest corners of the web.

Naturally, Facebook's terms and conditions don't allow this kind of video, but since it's live, it's incredibly difficult to filter it out ahead of time. There is no way for you to block adult videos.

Fortunately, the content is only a small fraction of the 3,000 year old video that is watched every day, so you might be very unlucky to stumble across it. However, it is important to understand that there is a risk of finding adult content on Facebook Live.
