Instagram is great for video content, but there are restrictions on the video length. This article will teach you how to share up to 10 minutes of video in one post.

Updated on October 3, 2022

Instagram has supported video content for a long time now, but they still don't give you nearly as many options as other platforms like YouTube or Facebook.

TL;DR – Use the Instagram Studio to trim your videos into shorter sections and upload them to Instagram Reels or your Feed.

One of the biggest restrictions on Instagram video content has been the length of videos you're able to post — and it's different for each video platform within Instagram.

In order of length, the restrictions are as follows:

  • Instagram Stories: Videos up to 60 seconds long; all videos longer than 60 seconds can be trimmed in app.
  • Instagram Reels: Videos less than 90 seconds.
  • Instagram Video (aka regular Feed posts): Videos up to 10 minutes long.

Your two options to post videos longer than 90 seconds on Instagram:

Option 1: Cut your video into shorter clips to share on Reels and Stories

Option 2: Upload to your Feed with Instagram Video (formally known as IGTV)

Which option should you choose, and what works best for Instagram? Let’s take a look.

Option 1: Cut Your Video into Shorter Clips

If you have a longer video that you want to post to Stories or Reels, your best bet will be to cut the video up into shorter sections:

  • If it’s for an IG Story, cut the video into 60-second clips and post them one after another in the same post.
  • If it's for Instagram Reels, trim your video until it's shorter than 90 seconds.

For Stories, you have the option to trim your video in Instagram before sharing to Stories, but the in-app editor is missing the precise control you'd want for trimming videos to a specific time stamp. If you want control over you own content and for the video to flow smoothly from one Story clip to the next, your best bet is to cut and edit the video yourself.

I recommend using the Kapwing Studio to cut your clips on a phone or computer.

Start by going to Kapwing.com in your phone's browser and click Get Started to enter the Studio. From there, upload your video from your phone or any online location.

Using the Timeline, Trim, Split, and Rearrange your video until you have the perfect clip of 90 seconds or less. Tap the Export button, then the Download button, and repeat the process for each video clip you want to post!

Option 2: Upload to Your Instagram Feed

In 2018, Instagram launched a solution for longer videos: Instagram TV, or IGTV for short. They've since retired IGTV, combining existing IGTV videos with Instagram Feed videos to create Instagram Video. You can now post longer videos, up to 10 minutes, directly to your Feed.

The trick with Instagram Video, however, is to pick the right thumbnail for your video to show up in your feed. Instagram allows you to do this when posting, so just make sure you know exactly which shot from the video you want your followers to see in your feed. You can also create and upload a custom thumbnail to use.

We hope this article helps you share all of your best videos on Instagram, no matter how long they are! What’s the best video size for TikTok?

Most social media influencers recommend 1080x1920 for TikTok posts. This is a vertical 9:16 aspect ratio that is optimized for TikTok’s vertical feed.

Why is Instagram Trying to Be Like TikTok?

Back in 2017, Instagram copied another social media app - Snapchat - when they launched Instagram Stories. Stories have been a huge success, causing many Snapchat users to switch over to Instagram fully as a means for keeping up with their friends and engaging socially. This success motivated Instagram to copy other popular features and publishing tools from emerging social media platforms. Recently, they copied the dual camera from the rising app BeReal. They have also copied many of TikTok’s features in the Instagram Reels toolkit. Reels has been quite popular so far, but Instagram has gotten flack from Kylie Jenner who accused the Meta app of “trying to be like TikTok” recently in 2022. Mark Zuckerberg has said that the company will still lean in to short-form video regardless, so it sounds like Instagram will keep copying TikTok, hoping to steal some of the great innovations that TikTok’s designers introduced. Reels now has sounds, remixing, duets, effects, and other features that TikTok started with. Instagram was originally a photo sharing app for your friends, but it has become a destination for viral short videos from strangers.

How to Add an Instagram Sound to a TikTok Video?

To avoid copyright takedown, it is better to add sound to your video natively in each app using the TikTok or Instagram music library. Because music labels have deals with each social media platform, however, you may find that the sound you want is missing from the TikTok library. In that case, use Kapwing to download the TikTok sound you want as an MP3 or import it directly with your video upload to burn the video and sound together. Then, you can add the music to TikTok as an original sound. Maybe your audio clip will go viral on the for you page!

What’s the Difference Between TikToks and Instagram Reels?

Both TikTok and Instagram Reels are video platforms for browsing short, vertical videos. The social media apps have many similarities, but there are a few differences. First, TikToks can be anywhere between 3 seconds and 10 minutes long, whereas Reels has 15, 30, 60, and 90 second long options. Instagram Reels is also not available in every country. Instagram Reels are discovered mostly on the app’s Explore page and in the Instagram feed, whereas TikTok has the personalized For You Page for each person. Instagram and Facebook Reels are fully integrated, whereas with TikTok you need to download the video (often with a watermark) to post elsewhere. However, you can use Kapwing to download the TikTok or Instagram video with no watermark for repurposing.

How to upload a long video to Instagram. Ideas for IGTV

Video in IGTV Instagram launched in June 2018. There was a separate button for the IGTV video, it was on the Main (now it is not there and the content is loaded like a photo or a regular video).

The main advantage of is that the video in IGTV does not disappear after 24 hours, like a story.

The second advantage of is that the video starts right after entering the application.

Today, the IGTV tool is still incomprehensible and underestimated by Ukrainian users. Although the situation is already better than it was in 2018. We figure out what is the reason for the tool not taking off and how to use video so that the videos bring useful benefits and successful success.

IGTV is no more. Now it's Instagram Video.

With the latest Instagram update for the week, regular video posts are already up to 60 minutes long. To post a video that used to be IGVT, you just need to create a post and add video to it. However, in the feed, the preview is still a minute long.

3.1 IGTV series

The feature appeared on Instagram in 2019. This so-called. rubricator helps to create playlists with similar video content. The mechanism is a bit like a guide on Instagram.
Series sort videos into categories and store episodes that have something in common.

Previously, this serial option could be implemented using author's hashtags. But this is extremely labor-intensive - imagine, for each category, you had to come up with a unique relevant tag and sign the video for the necessary sections with it. What if there are more than 3 categories and more than 10 videos?
Also, when searching by hashtags, videos are arranged not by chronology, but by the number of likes - the most liked video will be the first in the search results. That is, it was necessary to take into account the division of posts into parts and the signature to them.

What is the advantage of series - after the end of the first video, the next one from this collection starts playing automatically.
The second plus of is an increase in video views for the account and attraction of a new audience.

What should be in a video for it to shoot and become viral? Idea .
We recently came up with 9 trending story ideas. Check it out, although they are related to stories, you may find interesting ideas for content and develop them according to your vision and account needs.

The most famous series on Instagram is from NASA, where astronauts read children's books live.

Fig. 7 - Series from NASA

The idea can be picked up by book publishers - invite authors of books that are being printed to read several chapters of works. It will be great if the book is just being prepared for printing - the author will get an excellent presentation of unique content and warm up the audience before the release of the first print run.
The same applies to speakers, businessmen, etc. - all those who have printed materials in their assets.

Or take the example of S7 Airlines, a series for aliens who are about to visit Earth.

More ideas for series:

  • shopify offers interviews with business owners of shops on the platform;
  • teenvogue interviews the youth of the Next generation;
  • fitness trainers - short workouts to do on your own at home.

TikTok has already picked up the serial idea, and someone managed to show the series from real life on Instagram stories - when one situation is taken, and the process of promoting the story is shown every day. It is not necessary to split the video into clips of 15 seconds and upload it to a separate Highlights, you can edit a whole 1+ minute of video content by gluing (video processing applications will help with this). If the story is long (the same repair / relocation / collection of documents), as a result, a whole series will be released (3-4 episodes are also a series).

Please note that the series in the profile are marked with the designation “Series”. When you click on the mark, Instagram will pull up all the videos in this category for you.
Other videos in the section do not contain tags.

How to post and upload a long video on Instagram to Stories and feed - we will tell you about it right now. Moreover, we offer you several working methods at once, and you choose the one that pleases your soul. So let's go figure out how to add long videos to Instagram .

Usually, users are interested in two things - how to upload a long video to Stories and how to add it to the feed. As you probably already noticed, there are a few limitations on the social network. So, you can add a video to a regular feed, the duration of which is no more than a minute. The same is true for Stories - if you add a minute and a half video to your Stories, the service will automatically cut it to a minute and the last segment will not be published. These restrictions can be easily bypassed ... Catch a few ways.

How do I upload a long video to the feed?

There are two ways to upload a long video to the feed.

The first way is to post it on IGTV and add a one-minute preview to the post. Here's what you need to do for this ...

Instruction 1

  1. Open Instagram, using the "+" button at the bottom, select the long video you want to upload. We press "next". You will be presented with two options - "Short Video" and "Long Video". If you want to upload a long video to the feed, then use the "Long Video" option. The service will automatically cut a minute of the video and publish it in your feed, and then you will be asked to watch the video in its entirety on IGTV. It turns out that the feed shows a minute preview of the video with the ability to view it further.
  2. If you select "Short video", then Instagram itself will simply cut out a minute of the video and not a second more, and then publish it. In this case, no one will be able to watch the end of your video.

I personally like the "Long Video" option because it saves the length of your video, plus you can choose a beautiful frame for the video cover to be in your Feed post.

The second way is to cut your video into several equal pieces no longer than a minute long and publish them in a post in the feed in the form of a carousel.

Instruction 2

  1. To do this, download the Story Split - Video Splitter app first. It's free.
  2. Next, add your video (let's say it's 5 minutes long) to this application. Press the NEXT button.
  3. Next, you will see a screen where the duration of the video is written, you can set the length of the video segment, on the right you can immediately see how many segments will be output. You can also choose the recording quality. Since the video does not fit more than a minute into the tape, you can simply set the duration of the segments to 60 seconds. And then press the CONTINUE button.
  4. The program will start cutting the long video and five new video pieces will appear in your gallery. All you have to do is add them all in the correct order to the carousel in your Instagram feed and, voila, you were able to upload a long video to your Instagram feed.
