There are 13 relationship status types available to select on Facebook. Some of them; like married, single, in a relationship, engaged, divorced, separated, and widowed; are well-known terms around the world. Meanwhile, others require a bit of an explanation depending on where you live

Here are a few of the other relationship terms Facebook includes and what they mean:

  • In a civil union: This term was created originally for same-sex couples and is defined as a union with legal rights similar to marriage. The term is used in certain states in the U.S.
  • In a domestic partnership: When two people live together but are not married.
  • It's complicated: This is not a legal relationship term and it is typically used when a couple is not in a relationship but they are together. Some people use this when their relationship is fraught with tension.
  • In an open relationship: This is a relationship that is non-exclusive. People in an open relationship court other people while dating each other.

The family statuses are fairly simple and require no explanation: mother, father, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, grandmother, grandfather, step-mother, step-father, step-daughter, step-son, nephew, niece, cousin, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and father-in-law.

Changing your relationship status on Facebook is easy, and you can even tailor the privacy settings to suit your current situation.

To change your relationship status on Facebook:

  1. Go to your Facebook profile.
  2. Click on Edit Public Details which is below your profile picture and personal information. (On Facebook
  3. Select Edit in the Details section.
  4. Scroll down to Relationship.
  5. Here, you can unselect the box next to your relationship status so it won't appear in your Intro on your profile, however, the status will still be public in your Bio.
  6. Click on the pencil icon.
  7. This is where you can change your relationship status, enter the name of the person you're in the relationship with, and select pertinent dates for your relationship (anniversary).

Now you can change the privacy of your relationship status:

  1. On the bottom left corner, you will see an earth icon, this is the privacy standing of your relationship status. You can change it to Public, Friends, or Only me.
  2. Click Save to save your changes.
  3. Click Save again to save all of your changes.

You can also add family members to your Facebook profile so your Friends will be able to see who you are related to.

To add a family member to your profile on Facebook:

  1. Go to your profile.
  2. Below your relationship status, click on See your about info.
  3. Scroll down to the Family Members section.
  4. Select Add a Family Member.
  5. Enter the family member's name.
  6. Select your relationship with that family member.
  7. On the bottom left corner, you will once again see an earth icon, this is the privacy standing of your family member relationship. You can change it to Public, Friends, or Only me.
  8. Click Save.

Now you have complete control over Facebook when it comes to your relationship and family statuses.  You can choose if you want to keep these unions private or show them off!

Consult Your Partner Before Changing Facebook Relationship Settings

Before making any changes to your Facebook status, it's always a good idea to talk to your partner and ask if you should change your status to "In a Relationship" if you're dating or "Single" if you've decided to go your separate ways.

Because making these changes without both parties knowing can lead to some awkward moments.

How to change your relationship status on Facebook

1. Go to facebook.com on your Mac or PC and log into your account, if needed. Once there, click your name in the top toolbar to get to your profile.

2. Click the "About" button at the top of your profile.

3. Once you've reached your About page, which contains most of your personal information, click "Family and Relationships" in the left sidebar.

4. If you've never set your relationship status on Facebook before, click the empty box labeled "Add your relationship status." If you've already set your status in the past, hover your mouse over your current status and click the word "Edit" when it appears on the right.

5. A box labeled "Relationship Status" will appear. Click the box to open a dropdown menu, where you can choose from a number of different relationship types. Once you've selected one, click "Save Changes. "

  1. A short saying that expresses your views on life, or just seemed interesting to you.
  2. Your current status.
  3. Your marital or personal status: married, in a relationship, single, etc.

The main way to change

First, let's figure out how to put a status on Facebook, or write an interesting thought under your profile:

  1. Log in to your social network account.
  2. On the main page, click on your avatar with the name (in the upper right corner or the top line in the column on the left).
  3. You are in your profile, click the "Edit profile" button.
  4. Here you can set a photo for the avatar and for the cover of your personal page, and write a little "About yourself" below. nine0096

  6. You can briefly describe your lifestyle, eg traveller, writer, collector. Or write your favorite phrase.
  7. Please note that you cannot change the audience for this information. Here, the default value is always “Available to everyone”, which means that what you write about yourself can be read by any Facebook user.

In social networks, it is worth writing honestly about your personal life. People who already have a couple will be able to avoid ambiguous hints and unnecessary contacts. And those who are not yet in a relationship may find a partner much faster. After all, Facebook is millions of free people around the world, open for communication.

So, let's figure out how to make or change the status on Facebook:

  1. Enter your profile (click on the profile picture).

  4. In the column "Marital status" click on the pencil and select one of the twelve options. Facebook has provided statuses for all occasions: married, divorced, single, in an open relationship and much more.
  5. For the statuses "Married", "In partnership", "In a relationship", "Engaged", you can specify the name of the partner, as well as the date the relationship began.
  6. Below you can add the profiles of your family members if they are also registered on Facebook: click on the line "Family member", a list of all your friends will open. Choose a person, then indicate who he is to you (father, mother, brother, sister, husband, wife, etc.)
  7. You can set the degree of privacy for both marital status and relatives. This information can be seen by all users, only friends or no one at all (just me).

Important: in order to add a relative to Facebook, you must first become friends in the social network.

About the moment

If you are itching to tell your followers about what is happening to you right now, you can create a post with feelings or actions:

  1. On the main page of the social network, click on the line "What's new with you?"
  2. Select the “feelings/actions” emoji at the bottom of the post window ⇑
  3. This will open a window with two tabs, where you can find dozens of feelings and actions suitable for almost any situation, for example: “happy, heading to Paris”.
