The world knew almost immediately when model Bella Hadid unfollowed superstar Selena Gomez due to some scandalous celebrity gossip. But with paparazzi ignoring our every move, it can be hard for regular people to see who unfollowed us and why.

But recently, I found out there's an app that solves this problem. 

Followers+, by Tappple, was introduced to me by a hipper, more in-touch friend, and now that I've used it, there's no turning back. The way it works is by gathering all the mathematics and data behind your pictures, hashtags, and — most importantly — followers.  

And yes, it tells you who unfollowed you. Here's how it works:

The front page of the app looks like the stock exchange.

At the very top, your most recent post is highlighted along with how many likes and comments it got and a percentage that represents how well it did compared to your other posts. It also shows a graph that details how well your last seven posts have done and has a continuous scroll showing your rises, falls, and total engagements. 

With a small scroll, you get to the good stuff. Sections like "New Followers," "Lost Followers," and "Blocking Me" contain all the juicy details.

In each section you can see the name, picture, and handle of the users in question. "Lost Followers" lists users by when they stopped following you. Other sections are just rolling lists of users. 

I found the most treacherous section to be "Not Following Me Back."

The "Not Following Me Back" section leads you to the aptly named "Unrequited" page, which reveals everyone who isn't returning the favor.

If you decide to click into this page, beware: You will find people you thought were following you, and it has the potential to ruin friendships.  

If you're lucky, this page will mostly consist of companies, celebrities, and Insta-famous accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers. Just don't be surprised if you catch a few of your besties on this list!

This page also shows you how many times these not-followers have liked your pictures.

This could mean that they were once following you and unfollowed you before you downloaded the app or that they've never followed you, but have kept a close eye. 

Once you've gotten over that, the most useful tool is the "Lost Followers" section.

You'll be able to see who unfollowed you and when they did. You can also slapback by easily unfollowing them on this app as well, which will surely keep your Follower to Following ratio up to par. 

If a user deletes their account they will also show up in this section.

In other sections of the app, you can also see which days and hours have proved most successful for posting on your page, optimize your next uploads, and if you're willing to shell out some bucks, see who has deleted comments or unliked your pictures.

On the downside, this app is neither endorsed nor supported by Instagram, so there's a risk it could be deleted.

For now, it works just fine with an overall four-star review in the app store. There have been some claims in the "poor reviews" section that it lies about people unfollowing you, but that hasn't happened to me yet. If that scares you away, there's always the old-fashioned, click-and-scroll method to fall back on. 

What happens if I unfollow someone on Instagram?

In this blog we explore what happens if you unfollow someone on Instagram; and what you can do if you discover someone has unfollowed you.

What happens if I follow someone on Instagram?

This depends on their privacy settings. If their account is set to private then you can only request to follow them – they will receive this request and get the opportunity to ‘confirm’ or ‘delete’. If they confirm your request, then you will begin following this person

If their account is set to public, you will be automatically allowed to follow their account, and they will receive a notification to say that you have followed them.

Once you have started following someone then you will be able to see their profile and each time they share something new it will appear on your homepage as part of your feed.

It’s important to remember that if you follow someone on Instagram, you do not create a two-way link between your accounts. You can see their content but they will not automatically see yours. For that person to see your content in their feed they will need to follow you back.

What happens if I unfollow someone on Instagram?

Unfollowing someone means you will no longer see their content in your feed. If they have a public account then you may still be able to see what they post by visiting their profile directly.

If you choose to unfollow someone on Instagram they will not receive a notification saying that you have done this. However this doesn’t mean that they can’t work it out another way.For example, if they notice that their number of followers has decreased, they may be able to tell who has unfollowed them by looking at the list of their followers and working out who is missing.

Additionally because following someone on Instagram does not create a two-way link between your accounts, unfollowing them will only stop their content appearing in your feed, and will not stop them seeing content that you post.

If you want to prevent someone from seeing the content you are posting, then what you need to do depends on your privacy settings:

For private accounts

If your account is private then you can remove them as a follower. This can be done by going to your followers list and clicking on the three vertical dots to the right of their name.

For public accounts

If your account is public then you will need to block someone to prevent them seeing what you are posting. This can be done by going to their profile, clicking on the three vertical dots at the top of the page and selecting the ‘Block’ option.

Note: Instagram does not send notifications to the other person if you remove them as a follower or block them.

What should I do if someone unfollows me?

Firstly – don’t panic! If your total number of followers has decreased it could be for any number of reasons and it’s no reflection on you and your offline friendships.

If you know the identity of the user who has unfollowed you then there’s still a few things to consider.

  1. There are some accounts on Instagram who will follow lots of other users with the expectation that they should then immediately follow back. These ‘follow for follow’ accounts are often looking for quick gains in the number of followers they have and may unfollow you at a later date.
    In these situations it’s best to have your privacy settings in place to help control who can see what you’re sharing and to manage who can follow you. Remember that sharing content with people who you don’t know in person can be dangerous – especially if you’re revealing things like personal information.
  2. If somebody you know offline has unfollowed you then try not to worry. It may have been by accident or because of a misunderstanding. Immediately reciprocating and unfollowing them could make the situation worse.
    It’s worth considering your friendship more broadly – has their behaviour towards you changed? If your friendship still feels positive, then unfollowing you may not have been done for a negative or malicious reason. It’s absolutely okay to be friends with someone offline but not to follow each other on social media.
    If it really bothers you or your friendship seems to have changed, try and have a conversation in person. Approach it calmly and without judgement: “Hey, I noticed you unfollowed me on Instagram – is everything alright?” Listen to what they have to say and work together to resolve any conflicts – maybe unfollowing you was a symptom of another disagreement.

Remember it’s ultimately their decision as to whether they want to follow you or not and vice versa. Most importantly, you shouldn’t let these decisions define your friendship.

Whilst it can sometimes feel personal if somebody decides to unfollow you, it’s important to remember that you’re worth more than the number of followers you have online. If you’re struggling to cope with the pressures of being online then it’s important to speak to someone at home or at school.

A reliable way to find out who unfollowed you on Instagram

In general, it is impossible to find out who unfollowed you on Instagram * - the social network does not send notifications when someone stops being your follower. And even in the statistics of business accounts and profiles of the author, it is impossible to see who exactly left. There is only general information about the number of new subscriptions and unsubscribes.

If you only have 100-200 followers and follow them all in response, of course you can check the list manually . But if there are thousands of subscribers or you do not subscribe mutually to everyone who is added, this is unrealistic.

The only solution in this case is to use third party applications. But it's dangerous. Any such programs require authorization with a username and password from Instagram * and can then use your account for their own purposes: follow someone or just hack. We will talk about applications for viewing unsubscribers, but we do not recommend using them.

"Reports+ for Instagram*" (3.0☆). Analyzes subscribers, including showing who unsubscribed. Also allows you to see who:

We remind you that using such services is risky. Instagram* may temporarily block a profile if it notices suspicious activity on it.
