Popular Messaging System WhatsApp keeps introducing new features which makes it even more popular among its users. One such feature which can be really useful to WhatsApp users is the ability to Pin Chats in WhatsApp.

Pin Chats in WhatsApp

Normally, the arrangement of Chat threads in WhatsApp is based on the most recent Messages being pushed to the top of the Chats screen.

However, this setup can lead to the possibility of unimportant Group Chats taking up the most visible part of screen space on your phone or tablet, while pushing down important Chat threads.

The solution to this issue is to make use of the Pinned Chats feature in WhatsApp. This feature allows you to prioritize certain Chats over others by allowing you to pin up to three Contacts or Contact Groups to the top of the Chats screen.

Pinned Chats always remain at the top of the Chats screen, making it easier to keep track of important Chats and prevent them from being mixed up and diluted with all other Chats which may not be of the same importance or interest to you.

Pin Chats in WhatsApp on iPhone

Follow the steps below to Pin Chats in WhatsApp on your iPhone.

1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone

2. Next, tap on the Chats tab located at the bottom of your screen (See image below).

3. On the Chats screen, swipe right on the Chat that you want to pin until you see the Pin button (See image below).

4. Once you see the Pin option, tap on the Pin button to pin this particular Chat to the top of your Chats screen (See image above)

Note: Do not swipe all the way to the right edge of the screen, as this will mark message as being read or unread. Swipe only till you see the Pin button.

The Pinned Chat will appear at the top of the Chats screen with a pin icon on the right side. At any time, you can Unpin this Chat by swiping to the right and tapping on the Unpin button (See image below).

The pinned Chat will not change its position even if you send or receive new WhatsApp Messages. In case you decide to Pin another Chat, the Newly pinned Chat will be added to the top, which means that the existing pinned chat will be pushed down.

Pin Chats in WhatsApp on Android Phone

Follow the steps below to Pin Chats in WhatsApp on your Android Phone.

1. Open WhatsApp on your Android Phone

2. On the Chats screen, select the Chat that you want to Pin by tapping and holding on it (See image below).

3. Once the Chat is selected, tap on the Pin Icon to Pin this particular Chat to the top of Chats Screen (See image above).

You can Unpin this Chat at any time by selecting the Chat (Tap and Hold) and then tapping on the Unpin Icon (See image below)

As mentioned above, the Pinned Chat will always remain at the top of Chats screen, even if you send or receive new WhatsApp Messages. In case you Pin another Chat, the existing Pinned Chat will be pushed down and the newly Pinned Chat will be added above the existing one.

However, if you are not a WhatsApp user, you can install the application from Google Play Store if you are an Android user. While iPhone users can download it from the App store.

How to pin WhatsApp chats on Android

If you have an Android device, you will need to follow these steps to pin a chat on WhatsApp:

1. Open the WhatsApp application.

2. Scroll down to the chat you want to pin.

3. Press and hold your finger on the chat you want to pin.

4. A pin icon will appear above the list of chats, which you must click. You will see the message "Chat is pinned" if the operation was successful.

What happens when you pin a chat on WhatsApp?

After clicking on the pin icon, the message "Chat is pinned" is displayed. A pin icon appears in the chat line. On fig. 2 Chat Chat has a pin on the right side. Now the chat will be forever (until detached) located at the very top of the WhatsApp chat list.

How to pin a chat in WhatsApp on an iPhone

On an iPhone, the process of pinning a chat is performed in a slightly different way than on Android, but is logically understandable. First you need to sort of swipe the chat of interest to the right. Not to the left, but to the right, you need to swipe. Additional menus will appear to the left of the chat name. There you can easily find the "Pin" menu with the image of a pin next to the inscription (Fig. 3).

Tap on the inscription "Pin" and the chat is fixed. It becomes the very first in the list of chats. A pin icon will always be next to the name of such a pinned chat (Fig. 4). This means that the chat is pinned to the top of the general list.

Now, each time you open the WhatsApp chat list, the pinned chat will always be the very first one. Or one of the first three, since you can pin up to three chats at the same time.

Unpinning a WhatsApp chat on Android

Deleting a pinned chat is the reverse process of pinning a chat.

1. Tap and hold on a pinned chat until a checkmark appears next to the chat icon. At the same time as this checkmark, a crossed line will appear on the pin icon.

2. Click on the crossed out pin icon. The message "Chat is unpinned" will appear. After that, the chat will be moved to its original place in the general list.

How to unpin a chat on iPhone

Sooner or later, it becomes necessary to unpin a previously pinned WhatsApp chat on iPhone. This may be due to the fact that the chat has lost its relevance, it does not need to be the first in the list now. Or because priorities have changed, and you need to “free” the top 3 first WhatsApp chats for more important chats.
