How to share a video from vimeo on instagram
How to share videos to Instagram from Vimeo, YouTube, and more
We really don’t have to tell you that Instagram is one of the biggest social media platforms in the world.
This powerhouse app crossed the 1 billion monthly active users (MAU) milestone in 2020, and other sources report that, by the end of 2021, that number exceeded 2 billion. Not too shabby, huh?
Not only does its user base continue to steadily grow, but also, Instagram’s algorithm made a huge pivot in 2022 to favor video content. According to Hootsuite, video alone makes up 17.8% of all main Feed posts (and before you ask, that’s not even counting Reels! Or your Explore page!) so all signals point to a greater focus on video than ever before.
Whatever Instagram’s exact number of monthly users, it’s clear — Instagram is a gold mine for video marketers.
In this guide, we’ll show you how you can take advantage of Instagram’s huge user base to grow your brand with videos you’ve already used on other platforms.
We’ll talk about…
- Why share your videos on other platforms?
- How to share a YouTube video on Instagram feed
- How to share a YouTube video on Instagram Stories or Reels
- How to share a Vimeo video to your Instagram feed

While you’ve been busy building your brand on a platform like YouTube, you might’ve wondered at some point, “Should I share my videos on other social media platforms?” or something similar.
Well, using your existing content elsewhere can have quite a few benefits, like:
Wider content distributionCross-promoting is a little different from cross-posting—the latter simply means you’re using the same content in the same way as it was on another platform. Cross-promoting however, uses some of your existing content as a sort of ‘teaser’ to encourage traffic to the original content/platform.
This is a tried-and-tested method for many popular YouTube channels to use Instagram as a teaser to funnel more people to their YouTube videos. For example:
Elizabeth Zharoff uses Instagram to post teasers of her YouTube videos and includes the link to her channel in her Instagram bio.
Reach brand new audiencesIf you feel your brand may be having a little plateau on another platform, Instagram is a great place to help you reach new audiences. Depending on how well you make use of hashtags and other features, as well as publishing quality content, you could see reach rates from 1.2% (for accounts with >200k followers), to 5.4% for accounts with >10k followers.
Repurpose older videosGot a video you and your audience loved on your original platform? If the content of the video still holds true (i.e. doesn’t contain outdated information), then it’s worth giving it some new life on Instagram.
By doing this, you can increase the impact of your original content without having to do any heavy lifting of creating entirely new content for your newer audience on Instagram. With 93% of marketers agreeing that video content helps build brand awareness, it’s a win-win!
One of the most obvious platforms to cross-promote with Instagram is, of course, YouTube.
And while the whole process of cross-promoting regardless of platform would be easier if you have the original video files on your computer/smartphone to re-upload, mistakes happen. You might’ve deleted content to save space, or lost footage to the digital void.
(We understand. Happens to the best of us. That’s why video pros often own their weight’s worth of hard drives.)
So what do you do if you no longer have the OG files stored on your hard drive?
If your video is still uploaded to YouTube or another video hosting platform, there are two methods of doing this: (1) using a YouTube converter tool, and (2) downloading the video from your YouTube channel.
Using a YouTube video converter
1. Find a YouTube Converter
In this step, you’ll want to find a YouTube video downloader/converter tool—there are many of them free to use online, but be careful. A lot of them can also harm your computer/phone with viruses. So be sure to have some anti-virus protection. In this example, let’s use onlinevideoconverter.com:
2. Go to your chosen YouTube video and paste the URL into the tool.
Head over to your YouTube video of choice and get the URL, the shortened one or the address bar doesn’t matter. Copy the URL and paste it into the search bar in your YouTube video converter tool.
3. Download and re-upload the video to Instagram.
From there, press the “Start” button to convert/download the video.
In the case of the tool above, pressing download initiated a file download right away. Other tools might open a separate tab (which can be sketchy). Close that tab, and the real download button should be available in your original tab.
From there, you’ll want to edit your video to make it Instagram-ready. You can cut down footage into Reel length, or splice together clips to tease the viewer into watching the entire video on YouTube.
There are lots of video editing tools available such as Adobe Premiere, iMovie, or Vimeo Create to help you do this. One of the benefits of an online video editor is that some include the ability to connect directly to your social platforms, making upload to IG easier.
After that, simply upload the new video edit to Instagram using the following option:
Downloading the video from your YouTube Channel
The other, easier option to get your YouTube video onto your device is to head to your YouTube channel content page (assuming you have access to it), find your video, and then click on the options to download it right there:
After downloading from YouTube, the remaining steps are the same as if you used a YouTube converter tool.
How to share a YouTube video on Instagram Stories or ReelsYou’ll notice in the steps above that you can’t use YouTube’s native “share” feature for Instagram (otherwise the steps would be very different). On top of that, Instagram only lets you upload files. So in the case of sharing YouTube videos to Instagram Stories or Reels the download video steps are the same.
However, from there you’ll need to edit your video to fit the right aspect ratio for smartphone screens (9:16), with that in mind, here’s what to do:
1. Download your YouTube video.
Follow the instructions from sharing to feed above.
2. Upload your video to your favorite video editing tool.
The prime purpose of this step is to change the aspect ratio from 16:9 (which is most common for YouTube videos) to 9:16 to fit with Instagram Reels and Stories. In Vimeo Create, for instance, you can do this easily in two or short steps directly after uploading.
3. Make your video 9:16 aspect ratio.
As mentioned, in this example I’m using Vimeo Create to edit. In this case, click on your video in Vimeo and you’ll see the following screen:
Click on the Edit or Trim button highlighted and choose the Editor option. From there all you’ll need to do is click on the Ratio button at the top and choose 9:16.
After that, just click save and you’ve got your new aspect ratio!
4. Download and re-upload to Instagram.
Similar to the previous instructions, you’ll need to download your video from your editing tool and re-upload it to Instagram. However, you’ll need to do this step on your phone as you can’t yet use Instagram on your desktop to post Reels or Stories.
If using a Mac, you can airdrop from my Mac to your iPhone. However, if you have a PC or Android phone, you’ll need to use Bluetooth, USB, or a Cloud Storage service to get the video on your phone.
Once it’s on your phone, simply open up Instagram and upload it as a Reel or Story. If you choose to go with Stories, then bear in mind that Instagram will cut your video into segments if it’s too long.
How to share a Vimeo video to your Instagram feedIf you’re using Vimeo as your native platform of choice, the steps are very similar to getting and re-uploading the video from YouTube. However, you can use Vimeo Create to make any edits you need before downloading, so:
1. Make any edits you need first on Vimeo Create.
After making your edits, Vimeo automatically saves a new copy of the video so you still have the old version available.
2. Download the video from Vimeo.
Vimeo makes downloading your videos super easy. Just head over to your recent videos, click the three-dot options and select download.
Clicking download will give you various video quality options from 240p up to the video’s original quality.
3. Re-upload your video to Instagram.
Follow the same step 3 as previously detailed on uploading a video to Instagram.
How to share a Vimeo video to Instagram Stories or ReelsThis process is exactly the same as I’ve previously detailed in the “How to share a YouTube video on Instagram Stories or Reels” section, but without the first few steps of downloading the video from YouTube.
So in this case, follow those instructions from step 3, as you’ll already be on Vimeo. As a side note, you can easily share your new 9:16 video to TikTok (if you have a business account) natively within Vimeo using the “Share to Social” option you’ll see near the “Save” button or beneath the video in your library.
How to share TikTok videos to InstagramA common mistake people make when sharing videos from TikTok to Instagram is using TikTok’s native sharing feature. Sounds counterintuitive, right?
Well, using this feature embeds a moving TikTok watermark on the video. According to Instagram, they’ve made algorithm updates to make watermarked videos “less discoverable” to users.
To avoid the deadly marketing sin of being undiscovered, follow these two simple steps:
1. Download your video from TikTok.
Unfortunately, TikTok doesn’t make it easy to download videos from the app without the watermark, so you’ll need to use a third-party service to help you. Some options include:
- Desktop: musicaldown, SaveTik, SnapTik, and TokSaver.
- Mobile: SaveTok (iOS and Android), RepostTik (iOS only).
2. Edit the sounds from the TikTok video.
Before uploading your de-watermarked TikTok video to Instagram make sure you be aware of copyrighted sounds.
TikTok provides a library of sounds for users to use on its platform only, and Meta (Facebook and Instagram) can easily detect when you upload copyrighted material. In this case, you’ll need to use an editing tool such as InShot (a personal favorite) to strip the sound from the video and add your own.
3. Re-upload to Instagram.
After making the necessary edits, all that’s left to do is re-upload the video from your device to Instagram. TikTok videos are already in the 9:16 aspect ratio, so they make great Stories or Reels.
However, you can just as easily post them as Feed videos since Instagram no longer auto-resizes feed posts to 1:1 aspect ratios.
As Instagram leans towards video-based content, there’s a great opportunity to use the app for cross-promoting YouTube and TikTok content. Ready to promote your video content on Instagram and other channels?

How to Upload a Vimeo Video to Instagram — Clideo
All the social media have their own rules and specs for video posts, no wonder it's not that simple to share a video from one resource to another.
by Julia Chukhvicheva
Another point to consider – social media specs, they are quite different, so you should adapt the necessary video for the Instagram requirements:
- Orientation: Horizontal, Square, Vertical
- Aspect ratio: 16:9, 1:1; 9:16 respectively
- Recommended resolution: 600 x 315, 600 x 600, 600 x 750
- Supported extension: MP4, MOV
If you want to post your recording on another social media, you can check its specs out in our complete guide.
And the most important is that you need to download the video from Vimeo first as the platform does not allow direct sharing. But it's not a problem if the owner allows it, you'll see the downloading option on the video's page.
Read on and get to know how to put a Vimeo video on Instagram in four easy steps.
Add a Vimeo video
Open the Vimeo video you need and download it to your device.
Open Clideo’s Video Resizer in another browser tab, click "Choose file" and upload the video to the tool.
Resize your video for Instagram
There are two fields on the right of the player: for the social media and for the post type. Hit the “Instagram” option in the first and select one of 15 presets in the second.
There are about 100 ready aspect ratios for other social media like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.
If you want to resize the video manually, choose the “Custom” option, then select one of the aspect ratio patterns or the “Source video” option to keep the initial aspect ratio.
Then set either width or height in the corresponding boxes and the second parameter will be calculated automatically.
If you need maximum customization and want to set both video dimensions manually, choose the “Not set” aspect ratio or just “untick” the chain sign between the boxes.
Crop the recording if needed
There are two crop options available:
- Fill the frame with the image completely. There will be no sideboards left, but the video is likely to get cropped. You may zoom it in and out to find the perfect position.
- Fit the image in the frame. The whole video will be kept but the sideboards will appear. You can move the image in all four directions using the arrows below the “Fit” button. You may also want to change the background colour: select it from the standard palette or set a hex code manually.
The tool allows you to convert the recording to another format. For Instagram you'll have two options: MOV and MP4.
When you are done, click on “Resize” and give the service several seconds to do its job.
Download Vimeo to Instagram
Save the resized video to your personal device or one of two cloud storage accounts, then post it on the chosen social media.
Don’t forget to take a quick final preview before saving the file as there is still a possibility to edit the project if you find some imperfections by clicking on “Back to edit”.
Easy Methods to Share YouTube Videos on Instagram - Wave.video Blog: Latest Video Marketing Tips & News
10 minutes of reading
At first glance, this is not entirely correct. Instagram and YouTube are, at their core, different social media platforms, with the former preferring photos with a 1:1 aspect ratio, while the latter is primarily a video-sharing platform.
But you can share YouTube videos on Instagram, and if you do it right, it can pay off enormously by getting more eyes and ears to your content.
Most Internet users access the Internet through mobile phones. A significant number of them are primarily teenagers and young people who use Instagram almost daily. The meteoric rise of TikTok has proven that the niche of short and medium-sized videos is lucrative but not yet explored.
In a time of declining attention, Instagram stories or videos can be just what you need to get people to watch more of your YouTube videos without spending on ads.
Many brands and authors do this, and you can too. Dive in and find out how.
Why post YouTube videos on Instagram?
With so many things to take care of, it might not make much sense for most people to post YouTube videos on Instagram. Unless you're a creator or brand, in which case a lot is at stake. In most cases, consistency, quantity, and quality are critical to your success.
These three reasons sum up why you should post your YouTube videos on Instagram:
To compile
This can be a great way to showcase your work and give your followers an idea of what you have to offer.
You can use Instagram's built-in video editing tools to compile clips from your YouTube videos into short, interesting videos, or use advanced editing options in tools like Wave.video editor, which is more powerful and free.
To promote your video on YouTube
As an author or brand, it is clear that getting your content out to a wide audience is a top priority. What better way to increase views on your YouTube channels than to create anticipation among your viewers on other platforms?
Don't forget to include compelling captions and a call to action that encourages your subscribers to watch the video on your YouTube channel. Use all the power of Instagram tags and hashtags to reach a wider audience and increase the likelihood that potential viewers will see your video.
Just to share it with your followers
Never skimp on ideas of what to post on your Instagram. Recycle some of your YouTube creations and share them on your Instagram account. Think of it as a low-effort, high-return activity.
You won't have to create new content, but you'll always have something to keep your audience entertained.
Even if you feel that some of your content is best used in long format, you can always extract thumbnails of interesting scenes or crop YouTube videos to fit Instagram clips.
How to share YouTube video to Instagram Story
Currently, you cannot share YouTube video directly to Instagram Story. At least the way it can be done on Facebook and Instagram. However, there are three most effective workarounds that are easy to follow.
Method 1: Download, edit and share
If you want to share YouTube video to Instagram story, you will have to download it to your device first. However, YouTube does not have such a feature and does not allow users to upload videos that do not belong to them.
Uploading other people's videos is against YouTube's user policy, and depending on where you live, there may be some legal liability for doing so. However, if you're uploading your own videos, there's nothing to worry about.
Use any YouTube video downloader of your choice. Most of them will require you to copy and paste the YouTube video link on your site. Make sure you select the highest resolution option before downloading.
Once the YouTube video is downloaded to your device, launch Wave.video in your browser.
Sign in to your account or sign up for a free account if you're new to it. By default, the site will redirect to the "My Projects" tab. If it doesn't, just go to the tab by clicking the "My Projects" button in the upper right corner of the main page. See below for help.
Click "Create", then select "Blank Video" in the "My Projects" tab. Alternatively, you can select "Upload Video" and select the downloaded YouTube video to upload it to the editor.
If you select the "Create" and "Blank Video" options, you will have to select an appropriate aspect ratio. Available options include 1:1, 9:16, and 4:5, and they all suit different purposes, so choose what you need.
If you've uploaded a video directly to Wave.video, you can always resize it to a suitable aspect ratio by clicking the "Resize" button in the submenu on your left, as shown below.
For this example, we will use the "History" option. Click on the "Upload Media" option as shown below and select the video you want to share on Instagram from your device.
Trim the video to be equal to or less than 60 seconds, which is Instagram's recommended length for Instagram stories.
Get creative with the Wave.video video editor's many editing options and tailor your video to your brand or purpose. Add captions or voice-overs to make your video interesting and easy to read. Go ahead and protect your creation with custom watermarks.
When everything looks good, click the publish button and select the video from the dropdown menu.
Select the highest video quality and resolution available on your plan, then click the "Render with watermark" button, but don't worry, the watermark will be tiny and barely visible. On updated accounts, this button is "Render".
Post the video directly to your Instagram account or upload it like other Instagram stories.
Method 2: Add a YouTube link to your story
First, download the YouTube video to your device and copy the link to it. To copy the link, click on the address bar of your browser and copy the link. You can also click the share button and copy the link that appears.
Then choose a clickable image or thumbnail and add a few catchy lines to let your fans know what's in the link.
Open Instagram on your phone and go to Stories.
Select the graphic you just created and upload it to your stories.
Click on the media button and select Link.
Paste the link and click done
Drag the link to the appropriate location.
Note: You can get the link swipe feature if you have more than 10,000 followers.
Method 3: Screen Recording on YouTube
First, determine if your device has a built-in voice recorder. Windows devices and most smartphones come with a built-in screen recorder. Download a screen recorder if you don't have one on your device.
Then play the YouTube video and turn on the screen recorder.
If you are on a Windows computer, press the Windows + Alt + R buttons at the same time to launch Screen Recorder. If it's a smartphone, tap on the screen recorder in the notification bar, but for best results, use a computer.
After capturing the video clips you want, use the video editor to trim distractions and add a few effects before posting the video to your Instagram story.
FAQ:
How do I share part of a video on YouTube?
This can be done in two ways. If the video qualifies for the YouTube clips feature, all you have to do is sign in to your account, play the video, and click the scissor icon below the video to share part of the video. The allowed duration for this native YouTube feature is between 5 and 60 seconds.
Once you receive your clip, click "Share Clip", copy the link and share it on Instagram as described above.
Alternatively, you can download the video to your device and use the Wave.video editor to trim the unwanted parts. You can then share it directly from Wave.video, or download it and post it to your stories or videos.
How to share YouTube video to Instagram on desktop?
Instagram on desktop is quite limited in functionality, so you can't share a YouTube video to Instagram using an embedded link.
What you can do is download a YouTube video as described above and edit it according to Instagram requirements. Then click on the plus sign, select a video from your device and upload it.
Alternatively, you can create a thumbnail image and in the caption ask your followers to find the link to the video in the biography section. Naturally, you will have to add a link to the video in the bio section.
How do I choose which part of a YouTube video to turn into content for Instagram?
The first step to getting it right is understanding the differences between the two platforms.
How to post YouTube videos on Instagram or IGTV videos?
First, you must download a YouTube video to your device and edit it according to Instagram's recommended video specifications for videos and IGTV.
Any tool to download YouTube videos will do, but remember to choose reputable sites to avoid getting malware or adware on your device. Also, remember that uploading other people's YouTube videos is against the platform's user policy and is illegal in most places, so only upload your own videos.
After downloading the YouTube video, resize it to Wave.video to match the recommended aspect ratio and video length on Instagram.
Instagram limits videos to 30 seconds and IGTV to 10 minutes, but depending on your account it can be more.
On Wave.video, simply post it directly to your Instagram account, or post the video through the Instagram mobile or web app.
Closing Thoughts
While it may seem daunting at first, sharing a YouTube video on Instagram is fairly easy once you get the hang of it.
Is it worth it? Definitely, especially if you're an author or a brand that wants to engage their followers and increase their reach. However, remember that on your Instagram account, you should only share videos that belong to you.

Why can't I upload videos to Instagram from YouTube
The development team is constantly improving the application to make the publication of uploaded video content as comfortable as possible. Despite this, users from time to time face various difficulties when trying to upload a video file from YouTube to Instagram.
The problems that often arise in this case can be caused by various reasons. One of them is an outdated version of the Instagram app. The reason for this may be disabling automatic updates. In this case, simply updating the application is sufficient. Also, failures in the operation of the smartphone itself are not ruled out.
Conclusion
The official Instagram app does not allow you to share YouTube videos like other social networks do. We hope that in the near future, developers will add such functionality and no longer have to resort to all sorts of tricks. We, in turn, ask everyone who uploads videos on Instagram from Youtube to respect copyright and indicate links to the authors, and delete content upon request.
