Vanish Mode on Instagram adds a new level of privacy to chats. Here's how to use the feature...
You know how they say "The internet never forgets"? Now it can! Not having to worry about your messages being read by others snooping on your device is a freeing experience.
With Instagram’s Vanish Mode, you can have private chats that disappear after they're read. In this article, we will show you how you can use Vanish Mode on Instagram.
Vanish Mode launched on Facebook Messenger in 2020, but it has been added to Instagram's messaging features as well. Facebook announced that the feature would allow users to create and join temporary chat threads that are automatically erased when the chat ends.
It is very similar to Snapchat's self-erasing feature, but it will only work when you turn it on manually. Vanish Mode also only works for chats with two people. It doesn’t work in group chats.
Eager to get in on this? Let's check out how the disappearing message feature works!

Once you close your chat window, all seen messages will disappear.
If the feature does not appear to work in your app, make sure it's up-to-date. If you have the latest version on Instagram and still cannot access Vanish Mode, it may not be available in your region.
Before you start using Instagram's Vanish Mode, here are a few important things to note.
This feature will only work with people who follow each other on Instagram. This is a safety precaution by the company so that you don’t have to deal with unsolicited messages from strangers on Instagram.
You can also choose to opt-in to this feature with someone or decline the request.
You’ve got total control of your chat experience.

If your chat buddy takes a screenshot of your messages in Vanish Mode, you get notified immediately and vice versa.
Make sure you turn on Vanish Mode before sharing a message, or else your chats will remain permanent unless you choose to unsend them.
If you send messages by mistake without turning on the Vanish Mode feature, your messages will show up like every other message. Vanish Mode will not automatically hide messages you send by mistake.

Vanish Mode is perfect for you if you're worried about snoopers looking through your chats. If safety and privacy are important to you (as we're sure they are), then you should take advantage of Vanish Mode's offering.
You can also use Vanish Mode if you want to have a private chat with another Instagram user.
For example, if you're planning a surprise party for a friend or a loved one, you can share the details with other parties with Vanish Mode, so that there are no chances of leaking information.
All seen pictures, text, memes, stickers, or GIFs shared in Vanish Mode are gone forever as soon as you end the chat.
As always, you can block anyone and also report a conversation if you do not feel safe. Feel free to break out of your e-shell and express yourself with this feature.
This message will self-destruct in 5 seconds
Not all messages and chats are meant to be saved. Some are better off disappearing after you finish the conversation. Instagram recently introduced a new feature called Vanish Mode, which you can use to send self-destructing messages to other users.
Instagram’s Vanish Mode is similar to that on Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, and Whatsapp and allows you to separate your public conversations from private ones on the network.
In this article, you’ll find out more about this feature, how vanish mode works, and why you should use it on Instagram.
Table of Contents
The ability to send self-destructing messages was introduced earlier on Facebook Messenger. It was only a matter of time before it appeared on Instagram.
By default, the Vanish Mode is turned off, and you have to manually switch it on before you enable the disappearing messages feature. The messages in the chat disappear after everyone in the chat has seen them and after the chat’s closed. Here are a few more things that you need to know about Instagram’s Vanish Mode:
That way, you’re entirely in control of what becomes private and what stays public. If you’re worried about the safety and privacy of the data that you’re sharing on Instagram, Vanish Mode is a feature that you should use.
There could be numerous reasons you might want to use Vanish Mode in a conversation. For example, if you’re worried about other people snooping on your Instagram activity and going through your chats, Vanish Mode may ease your mind.
Even if you’re 100% sure that you’re the only person who has access to your phone, you might want to keep some information that you share on Instagram private.
It could be anything, starting with a surprise birthday party and ending with work-related information that you want to keep confidential in case your account gets hacked.
Finally, if you’re a public figure yourself like a social media influencer, there’s information that you might want to leave outside the Instagram chat history. Using Vanish Mode, you can safely run your ideas for a new TikTok trending post by your trusted people without worrying that they’ll get leaked to the public before you can execute them.
How to Use Vanish Mode on InstagramBefore you can use the Vanish Mode feature, you need to enable it in an Instagram chat. Remember that turning Vanish Mode in one chat doesn’t mean that it’s automatically on for every other conversation that you have on Instagram. Make sure to turn Vanish Mode on for every chat you want to keep private.
You also don’t have to create a new chat to enable the Vanish Mode; you can turn it on in any existing chat on Instagram.
The instructions to turn on and off the Vanish Mode are the same for both iOS and Android users.
To activate Vanish Mode on Instagram, follow the steps below.
Instead of your regular chat thread, you should see the message You turned on vanish mode appear in the conversation. When you turn on Vanish Mode for the first time, Instagram will change the theme to Dark and release several Shush emojis to signal that you’re now using the app in Vanish Mode.
The other user will receive a notification with your request to enter the Vanish Mode, which they can accept or deny.
You’ll also see a little dotted circle next to their name in the chat list, which indicates that you have the Vanish Mode enabled in this chat.
If you can’t seem to turn on Vanish Mode, check if you’re using the latest version of Instagram and install the updates if necessary, then try following the instructions above one more time.
How to Turn Off Vanish ModeIf after a while you decide to disable the Vanish Mode in your Instagram chat, here’s how to do it.
You’ll see your regular chat thread appear together with the messages sent in Vanish Mode. After you close the chat, all seen messages from Vanish Mode will disappear.
You can then send a new message in this chat to check that the Vanish Mode’s turned off.
If you’re worried about your private information staying private and don’t trust Instagram with it, you can also try using one of the encrypted chat apps. They’ll make sure any of your personal and sensitive data stays away from prying eyes.

0To improve the security of your conversations, Instagram* has a special Disappearing Message Mode that can be used in one-on-one or group chats. When this feature is enabled by any of the participants, it is automatically activated for the rest. You can understand this by the design - the theme will change to black.
All messages sent in this way disappear from the history after your interlocutor views them and closes the dialogue. In a group chat, the message remains visible until all participants have read it and left the chat.
In addition, to protect privacy, Instagram* does not display message content in notifications on the lock screen, and monitors screenshots and screen recordings.
If one of the interlocutors tries to do this, a corresponding note will appear in the chat, and other participants will immediately know about it.
You can only reply to disappearing messages in this mode. When switching to regular correspondence, they will be unavailable, which is logical. At the same time, as well as regular messages, these can also be complained about, even if they are deleted.
Signing out is not done with a button, but with a long gesture, so it's not entirely obvious at first glance.
To turn off disappearing messages, swipe up from the bottom and hold your finger on the screen. Release it when the progress bar turns from gray to blue.
You will immediately understand that you have switched to the normal mode of correspondence by the appearance that has become white.
If you need to send private information, it's best to do it in this mode.
To do this, just swipe up from the bottom in the same way and release your finger when the gray ring turns blue. The dark interface will tell you that everything worked out.

Instagram Direct is becoming a more convenient and functional messenger. Recently, new themes have appeared, and now some users have the opportunity to send disappearing messages - text, photo, video, audio, sticker.
This update of Instagram Direct appeared, as usual, not immediately for everyone. But try to do it according to our instructions - maybe you already have the Disappearing Messages mode on Instagram.
Hidden messages on Instagram are a special type of messages that automatically disappear after being viewed by the recipient. That is, even with a very strong desire to re-open them, it will no longer work. Such shipments are usually used to send personal photos or classified information.
For example, you want to send another user a photo of an important document. It is dangerous to do this in the usual way, because if the account is hacked, the attackers will have personal data in their hands. Then disappearing messages come to the rescue, which allow the interlocutor to view the image only once.
Where can I find disappearing messages on Instagram? Where to click to activate them? Let's look into this issue.
Select the chat where you want to make disappearing messages.
Done! The person to whom you sent the disappearing message will have a blue circle appear in the line with your chat as in the screenshot below.
Any message after being read by the recipient will disappear from the chat for both you and the recipient. Plus, if a person takes a screenshot, then a notification about this will remain in the chat.
Note:
It is possible that it is only a month (as it was with the orange-green stories), or maybe it will be left forever. What to do if nothing happens when you swipe up? Such a function does not appear immediately for everyone.
