How to Create a Seamless Instagram Carousel Post
Reels may be the hottest thing on Instagram right now. But Instagram carousels are still thriving on the platform. In fact, they could be the key to sustaining engagement because they get people to stop and swipe.
In this guide, we give you a breakdown of why posting an Instagram carousel is a great idea for your social media strategy. We’ll also give you plenty of tips, examples and ideas to help you get started. Let’s dive in.
What is an Instagram carousel?
An Instagram carousel is a post containing more than one photo or video, which users can view by swiping left on a post through the phone app. Desktop users can view a carousel post by clicking on the arrow button on the right of a post. Think of it as a slideshow of posts that users can control manually.

Carousel posts are a great way to get people to pause and engage with your content, especially if the first slide is enticing enough. So it’s no surprise that Instagram carousels outperform both photo and video posts in terms of engagement.
Socialinsider.io found that carousel posts get higher engagement rates than photos and videos. Depending on follower size, carousels manage to hit engagement rates between 1.65% and 5.40%. This is higher than the average platform engagement rate, which stands at 1.22% according to the latest Instagram stats.
When to use Instagram carousels
The unique nature of Instagram carousels makes them a great option for strategic Instagram content. Some of the best ways to use an Instagram carousel post are:
- Educational content
- Data and infographics
- Tutorials
- Brand storytelling
- Before-and-after reveals
- Photo dumps
- Product reveals
- Product/brand updates
- User-generated content
- Event highlights
- Behind-the-scenes looks
Instagram carousel size requirements
When creating a carousel post on Instagram, you’d want to make sure that it looks great on the platform. So it’s important to follow the size requirements and specifications. Design and optimize your posts with the three aspect ratio options in mind:
- Square (1:1)
- Horizontal (1.91:1)
- Vertical (4:5)
For images, Instagram recommends a resolution of 1080 x 1080 pixels. Videos can have a minimum resolution of 600 x 600 pixels and a maximum resolution of 1080 x 1080 pixels.
How to create a carousel post on Instagram
Once you have the perfect images or videos lined up, you can start creating an Instagram carousel post using the steps below:
Step 1. Click on the “+” button from the navigation bar at the top of your screen.
Step 2. Select the option to create a new “Post.”
Step 3. Tap on the option to “Select multiple.”
Step 4. Choose the photos or videos you want to upload as a carousel post. You can select up to 10 photos or videos for your carousel. Then tap on “Next.”
Step 5. Just like creating a single-image post, you’ll get the option to edit your photos and videos by applying filters. To create a cohesive look throughout, you can choose to apply the same filter throughout all the images and videos. Once you’re done, tap on the “Next” button.
Step 6. Now add details to your carousel post. Make sure you include a suitable and enticing caption that could prompt engagement. You can even include popular and relevant Instagram hashtags to improve your post visibility. This is also the section where you can tag people, add a location or add a reminder similar to a regular post.
Step 7. Once you have everything sorted, tap on the “Share” button and that’s it. You’ve created and shared your Instagram carousel post.
How to schedule an Instagram carousel post
The manual publishing process may be straightforward, but it can be time-consuming. As a social media manager, one of your main goals is to do your job as efficiently as possible. That means scheduling content ahead of time so you can maintain a consistent publishing schedule.
And the same would hold true for your Instagram carousel posts. Fortunately, you have the option to schedule your Instagram posts using the Facebook Creator Studio. Here are the steps to follow:
Step 1. Log into your Creator Studio account and select the Instagram button at the top.
Step 2. Click on the “Create Post” button from the left-hand panel and select the option to create a post for your “Instagram Feed.” This option is suitable for creating image carousel posts and sharing videos shorter than 60 seconds.
Step 3. Click on the “Add content” button under the caption window and choose the first image or video you want to upload. After selecting the first content, the “Add content” button will move to the top of the caption window. Click on this button to keep adding all the photos and/or videos you want to include in the post.
Step 4. Once you’re done creating the post and adding all the info you want to include, click on the drop-down arrow next to the “Publish” button. Select “Schedule” and choose the date and time you want the carousel post to go out and click on the “Schedule” button. And that’s it–your Instagram carousel post is now ready to go out.
While this is a useful tool to have, keep in mind that it’s only accessible on desktop. This may make it a bit challenging if you’re used to managing everything from your phone or if you want to schedule a carousel post while on the go.
If you’re using an all-in-one social media management tool like Sprout Social, you can directly publish and schedule Instagram carousel posts to your accounts. Sprout recently updated it’s capability to allow users to publish Instagram carousels directly from the desktop app rather than the Mobile Publishing Workflow.

Creating Instagram carousel templates
One of the best practices to follow on Instagram is maintaining a consistent feed containing high-quality images. That means you should carefully pick the visuals for your carousel posts to make sure that your feed looks cohesive and on-brand. Instagram carousel templates can help with this.
Instagram carousel templates act as a framework for your carousel posts. They use a consistent style of color schemes, fonts and other design elements to make sure that each image comes together to form a unified look. Customize these templates with text, graphics and photos to create a new carousel post.
You can find plenty of stock templates on websites like Canva, PicMonkey and Adobe Stock. These templates are available to customize and download for free or for a small fee. Stock templates are a great option if you want to save time. They’re also perfect if you don’t have a knack for designing but still want professional-looking templates.
Alternatively, you can also design your own Instagram carousel templates from scratch. This is a good choice if you have a strong brand visual identity that you want to showcase through your Instagram carousels. It gives you more flexibility to create a template that fits your exact needs.
Start getting those swipes
The data doesn’t lie–there’s no doubt that Instagram carousel posts are highly engaging. So if you’re not using them already, you’re missing out on the opportunity to engage your audience. Make the most of the tips, ideas and template resources above to design eye-catching carousels that get people to swipe left.
In fact, engaging your audience is the key to becoming “best in class” on social media, according to 46% of consumers. Download the Sprout Social Index Edition XVII: Accelerate to gain more insights into the social consumer.
Instagram Update: How to Post a Slideshow to Instagram
Instagram’s latest update means users can now share multiple photos and videos in one post, but how has that gone down?
The introduction of Instagram slideshows means that you can post up to 10 images or videos at once. Finally! Your profile will stop getting clogged up with similar images in a row, and a little icon will show if a post contains multiple images.
While this kind of content has been available to brands for a while in the form of carousel ads, regular users are now able to try it out for the first time.
The React team wanted to find out what people thought of the new update, so took to the social data. We found hundreds of people talking about it, and have included the highlights from their conversations as well as a peppering of commentary from the Brandwatch marketing team throughout this article.
First, here’s how to post a slideshow to Instagram
Here’s how you do it:
- Hit the plus button like you usually would to add a photo or video
- In the photo window look out for the “select multiple” button
- Choose up to 10 photos or videos to share with your followers
- Edit the order and add filters to each photo/apply a filter to the whole group
- Write a caption, tag people, add a location – all that jazz
- You’re done!
What do people think so far?
The update offers answers to a number of user gripes with the platform. Where it was previously a place for only the best, people are now able to post a selection of images without having to worry so much about having just one quality image. In fact, Instagram’s explanation that “you no longer have to choose the single best photo or video from an experience you want to remember” was one of the trending phrases in the data surrounding the new update.
There were multiple comparisons between the Stories and slideshow features in the data. Where Instagram Stories are available outside of the feed, slideshows mean users can quickly flick through the post and then move on as opposed to clicking in and out of individual stories.
Wired’s positive review of the update was amongst the top-shared links, with David Pearce claiming “It’s going to make Instagram even more fun to browse.”
The article contains a warning. As social media platforms battle to become the place people go for everything, “Given its user base, Instagram is probably smart to give people everything they want so they’ll never leave. Yet it seems fair to wonder if, in doing so, Instagram might lose what made it so wonderful in the first place.” Given the general reviews of this update seem positive so far, the potentially negative effects remain to be seen.
Great uses of slideshows so far
Now it’s been rolled out properly, the new capabilities are an exciting prospect for marketers. It’s going to start with a scramble.
“Its a larger canvas for brands to market on with new possibilities for creativity. Like with all new tech and features, the strategy will come later. Brands will rush to explore what’s possible and once someone establishes what works others will copy.”
– Kristian Bannister, Digital Strategist at Brandwatch
There’s so much to experiment with. Here’s some of the fun and speculation we’ve seen so far.
Storytelling
Multiple photos and videos mean a longer, fuller story can be told in one post.

Key Lime Pie With Toasted Marshmallow Meringue INGREDIENTS 10 graham crackers 7 tablespoons butter, melted ¼ cup brown sugar 6 eggs, separated Lime zest 1 14-ounce can condensed milk ½ pint vanilla ice cream ½ cup key lime juice *(Regular lime juice works just fine if key lime juice is unavailable)* 1 tablespoon light corn syrup 1 cup sugar PREPARATION Preheat oven to 350˚F/180˚C. Place graham crackers in plastic bag and crush them into a fine crumb using a rolling pin. Alternatively, a food processor can be used to crush the crackers. Pour the graham cracker crumbs into a medium bowl with the melted butter and brown sugar. Mix until the crumbs take on the character of a coarse, wet sand. Pour the crumbs into a 9-inch pie dish. Press the crumb firmly into the dish, making sure to coat the bottom and sides of the dish evenly. Once the crust has been formed, place the pie dish into the refrigerator to firm up. Separate 6 eggs. Working with the yolks (reserve the whites for later), add the zest of 1 lime and whisk, either by hand or with an electric mixer, for 2 minutes. Add the can of condensed milk and continue to whisk until mixture is smooth and has a pale yellow color. Add in the ice cream and key lime juice. Continue to whisk for an additional 3-5 minutes. The filling should be smooth and airy when finished. Pour the filling mixture into the refrigerated graham cracker crust and bake at 350˚F/180˚C for 18-20 minutes, or until the edges of the crust begin to brown and the filling no longer jiggles when disturbed. While the pie is baking, combine the reserved egg whites with corn syrup and about ¼ cup of the sugar and begin to whisk vigorously to form the meringue. Continue to add the sugar in small increments until all of it is incorporated. Continue to whisk until mixture thickens and stiff peaks form, about 7-10 minutes. Top the baked pie with the meringue. Using a rubber spatula, spread the meringue evenly over the top of the pie, making sure to cover all the visible areas of filling. Once covered, use the tip of the spatula to shape the meringue forming small peaks a valleys in the topping. Bake at 350˚/180˚C for an additional 7-10 minutes to to

Longer videos
Another plus-point is the ability to upload lengthier videos. Adding each 1 minute clip to a slideshow means up to 10 minutes of ongoing video is possible in a single post.
Influencers
According to HollywoodBranded.com, Kim Kardashian charges around $250k for a branded Instagram post. Will being able to post multiple images mean rates are reduced if your product is featured on the 9th or 10th swipe? Perhaps a Kardashian endorsement will become more affordable (though they might not be all they cracked up to be).

InstaVideo: How to quickly create a beautiful video for Instagram* on iOS
Have you ever wondered what you use Instagram* for? Everyone has their own goal: someone boasts about what a great shot with protruding lips turned out in the mirror of the toilet, someone - a photo of food from a restaurant, but someone just shares interesting photos taken during the trip with friends. With the advent of the ability to add videos, as in Vine, short videos of various quality and performance began to appear on the popular social network, however, the photo-oriented service still prevails over video content. The InstaVideo application is designed to correct this situation, which allows you to create a video from a set of your photos. nine0103
How the app works is very simple: you select a few photos, add music, text and effects, and then save the video to add to Instagram*. Sounds promising, right? Let's also try to make our own little video.
After opening the application, we are given a choice of several options for preparing a video: creating a slide show, video collage and a new recording from the camera. Editing and splitting videos - for processing ready-made videos. nine0005
To create a spectacular slide show, select the appropriate menu item. From the iOS gallery, add several photos (up to 15 pieces) that will be displayed in it. After that, a preview of your video will be available to you. Now we need to add music to our video. To do this, there are three buttons with which you can select a musical composition from your library, set the playback start time, or ask InstaVideo to select a random track.
In the advanced settings, you can specify what video you want to make for Instagram*, then it will be optimized to 15 seconds. In addition, you can set "Photo Zoom" so that each photo in the slideshow has a slight zoom effect - this will make your video more "alive" than a simple series of photos following one another. It is also possible to adjust the effects, the transition from one photo to another. There are 10 different transitions available, including a random transition from frame to frame. The set itself does not stand out with anything special, but leaving the default "random" - the end result will be more interesting in any case. nine0005
After all the preparations and settings, the final touch remains: adding text to your video. You can choose not to write anything or choose one of eleven text templates that will be displayed at the beginning of the video. The templates themselves are quite common, but overall not bad.
That's it, the video is ready and now we can either save it on our device for later adding to Instagram*, or share it via iMessage, AirDrop or email.
Creating a video collage works in the same way: select photos or videos (up to 8 pieces), adjust their location on the screen, add music if desired and save. Everything is extremely simple and fast.
