How to post on facebook twitter and instagram at the same time

Post to all of your social media accounts at once

This story has been update. It was first published on May 18, 2017.

Social media networks have revolutionized the way we share information and keep in touch with one another. But they’ve also led to a growing sense of information overload. There are only 24 hours in a day, so if you’re determined to be active on all of your accounts, giving each one the time it deserves can be daunting.

One way to cut down on the time you spend inside your social apps is to post the same update across all of them at once. That way, just about all of your friends and followers should get the message. A variety of tools will help you do this—we picked out a few of our favorite options.

If This Then That (IFTTT)

If This Then That, or IFTTT, is a fantastic—and free—way to link your various apps and accounts together. It can send commands to and from apps, mobile phones, smart home gear, and more, by letting you build “applets. ” Each applet waits for a trigger (if this), and when that event happens, the applet commands an action in response (then that). For example, IFTTT can text your phone whenever a specific Twitter account sends a tweet.

[Related: Make your life easier with IFTTT]

To use IFTTT for your social posts, make the trigger a post on one social network, and the action the same post on another social network. So every time you post on Facebook, for example, IFTTT will send the same post to your Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, and other social accounts.

Once you’ve created an account on IFTTT, click on Create. Select the social network you want to act as the trigger (Twitter, for example), then the one where you want to replicate that post (Facebook, perhaps). You can only attach one social network action per trigger, so if you need to post to more than two at once, you’ll have to set up multiple applets. You can also click on Explore to find applet templates for what you want.

IFTTT’s simple interface is easy to use, so if you get lost, it’ll definitely help you figure things out.

Buffer

You’re not the only one interested in posting messages across multiple networks. Big brands rely on social media as well, and a host of applications already exist to help them make this type of mass post. We won’t cover them all here—most are geared towards social media managers and businesses—but Buffer is one of the easiest to use and is also great for individuals.

Buffer works across Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Whenever you compose a post inside the Buffer web app, you can choose which accounts you’ll send it to, complete with any picture attachment you’ve added. As an extra bonus, you can schedule posts—aka “buffering” them in a queue, which is where the service gets its name. You just compose your post, add your attachments, choose your networks, and then hit the publish button. You can even tweak the same post and adapt it to better fit each platform.

If you find yourself sharing a lot of links on your social networks, then try installing the Buffer extensions for Chrome and Firefox. The service also works via apps for Android and iOS. It even cooperates with IFTTT, giving you even more ways to manage your social media updates.

Buffer offers free plans that let you add all your networks except Pinterest and schedule up to 10 posts at once. You can also pay for additional features.

Power Automate

Formerly known as Flow, Power Automate is a Microsoft product that’s very much in the mold of IFTTT and does more or less the same tasks, like posting the same message to more than one social network. At the moment, it supports Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest, and other platforms like YouTube, Blogger, and Slack. While Power Automate isn’t quite as straightforward to use as IFTTT, it does give you a bit more control.

To use it you first need to create a Microsoft account or sign in with your existing credentials. Then, on the sidebar menu, go to Create and then filter the templates by social media. Scroll down and under Start from a connector, click All connectors and search for the social media platform you want to start.

For something a bit more tailored, make your own template or flow: On the Create menu, choose a task under the Start from blank menu. Then, name your flow and follow the wizard instructions to set it up. You’ll be able to add special conditions to refine more your flow. For example, you might want to share blog posts on Twitter, but only if they have a particular hashtag in them or come from a specific location.

Built-in tools

These days, many of your favorite social networks are already connected, so cross-posting is built right in. Take blogging platform Tumblr, for example—you can send text and image posts straight to Facebook and Twitter as well as to your blog.

[Related: Facebook users can now mix Messenger and Instagram friends in group chats]

Instagram is another master of cross-posting—you can connect your account to Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter, so your photos will appear on all of these networks at once. You can also turn these connections on or off on a post-by-post basis. Instagram won’t give you the same flexibility that Buffer, IFTTT, and Power Automate offer—but you can’t beat any of them for convenience and ease of use.

The best solution for you depends on which networks you use, how much control you want over your posts, and how intricate you want the setup to be. Between all of these options, you’ll surely be able to find something that suits your needs. You could also take the old-fashioned approach and update each network separately… but who has time for that?

Facebook rules for third-party apps make it nearly impossible

If you’re active on several social networks, it can be a real pain trying to keep up with all your accounts. When you want to spread around some photos of your vacation, get some recommendations for your next phone, or simply complain about the weather, having to go to each service and send the same message to each — and then return to each so you can follow any responses — is time-consuming and inconvenient, to say the least.

One way around it is to use a social network manager that lets you monitor, and post to, more than one social network at a time. These handy tools used to be more available to day-to-day users, but are now, for the most part, mainly selling their services to businesses who want to use social networking for marketing and other commercial purposes. However, there are still one or two that offer free (if somewhat limited) versions which can provide you with additional control over your social networking use.

Facebook and Twitter have made it increasingly difficult for third-party apps

It isn’t only the need to make a profit that has limited the number of apps able to work with more than one service. Services such as Facebook and Twitter have, over the years, made it increasingly difficult for third-party apps to work with them.

For example, in August of 2018, Twitter blocked access to real-time tweet streams from third-party apps. Perhaps worse, push notifications from these apps were prevented and / or delayed, forcing developers to rethink how they should deal with features such as direct messages (since most users want to be immediately notified of DMs).

And then there was Facebook’s reaction to the 2018 Cambridge Analytica breach, in which millions of Facebook users’ personal data was harvested. The company instituted new rules in April of that year stopping third-party apps (including more generalized apps such as IFTTT) from being able to publish posts to Facebook (or Instagram, which Facebook owns) as the logged-in user. Facebook does allow third-party apps to interact with Facebook pages (the business version of personal profiles), and you can post directly to Instagram if you have an Instagram business profile.

Still, if you want a way to post to several services, including Facebook and Instagram, there is one app that lets you do it for free — if you’re willing to go through a few hoops.

A social network manager called Buffer has come up with a rather ingenious way to get around Facebook’s restrictions. It reminds you to post your message to Instagram, and through Instagram you can send your post to Facebook.

Here’s how it works: Buffer’s free account lets you sign up for up to three accounts; these can include a Facebook page, Facebook group, Instagram, Twitter, a LinkedIn page, or a LinkedIn profile. (Buffer also posts to Pinterest, but you can’t do it on the free account.) Let’s say you want to post a photograph from your phone to three different services — Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook — at 2PM today.

Assuming you’ve already downloaded the Buffer app and registered:

  • Once you’ve taken or selected the photo you want to post, share it from your photo app to Buffer.
  • Choose which account(s) you want to post the photo on by tapping on the plus sign on top. Type in any text that you want to include with the photo. You can also add additional photos or videos.
  • If you want to send different text to different services (for example, if you want to send hashtags to your Twitter account but not to your Instagram account), tap “Customize” at the bottom of the screen.
  • When you’re ready, tap on “Share.” You’ll be able to choose to share it now, create a custom schedule, or add it to a pre-arranged queue (a posting schedule that you can create). Assuming that this is a one-time posting, tap on “Custom schedule.”
  • The Twitter message will automatically post to Twitter at the set time. However, you will get a notification on your phone when it’s time to post the Instagram message.
  • At the appointed time, Buffer will send you a notification, and invite you to either “Post!” or “Dismiss” the notification. Assuming you still want to post the message, tap “Post!”
  • You’ll be asked if you want to post it to a Story or your Feed. In this case, I’m going to post it to my Feed.
  • In Instagram, you can now crop your photo or tweak the color.
  • The last Instagram page will show you the photo. Buffer has automatically put your caption into your phone’s cache, so simply press into the caption area and paste. You can also choose to post your photo to Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr.
  • Finally, tap “Share.”

Share your image to Buffer.

Yes, this is a bit complicated. But once you get the hang of it, it’s a good way to schedule posts to Instagram and Facebook. (Another way, of course, is simply to use Instagram to post to Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr. However, when I tried it, the images didn’t show in my Twitter feed; you had to follow the link to Instagram to see them, which was not an ideal outcome.)

And if you want more features, such as the ability to manage up to eight social networks, Buffer’s Pro version costs $15 per month.

Almost, but not quite: Hootsuite

Hootsuite still stands out as an excellent way to monitor a variety of social networking services. The app offers access to several social networking services, including Twitter, Facebook (pages and groups), LinkedIn, WordPress, Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest.

Using the free account, you can monitor (and, in some cases, post to) up to three different accounts. Like Twitter’s app TweetDeck (which once was a multiservice app, but now only works with Twitter), it lets you see several feeds at once via a series of columns. It also lets you create tabbed pages, so that you can have one series of feeds for work, one for your friends, one for news outlets, etc.

However, Hootsuite is limited by the Facebook and Twitter rules, so unless you have a Facebook page or group, you cannot post to your feed. You can post a direct message to Facebook, but not with the free version. (The least expensive version, the Professional plan, costs $29 / month on an annual basis.)

In short: Changes in how social networks operate with third-party apps have made it extremely difficult for non-business users to push posts to more than one service at a time. But if you’re determined, there are ways around it.

The bad side

Cross-posting is useful when you want to regularly post the same content on both platforms. Imagine the challenge of opening each app, finding a photo, and downloading it. Ugh! Luckily, Facebook allows you to post directly to Instagram, albeit with some restrictions.

Who are they? How to post from Facebook to Instagram? Let's find the answers here. nine0003

Can you really post from Facebook to Instagram

Yes. You can. However, this feature is only available for Facebook Business Pages. You cannot post from your personal Facebook profile to Instagram.

Also, this feature is currently limited to the Facebook website only. You cannot cross-post from the Facebook mobile apps.

Can we cross-post stories

No. Stories are not yet supported. For now, only posts can be posted directly from Facebook to Instagram. nine0003

How to post from Facebook to Instagram

To post content from Facebook to Instagram, you must link your Instagram account to your Facebook page. Only after you successfully do this will you be able to crosspost. Please note that you will not be able to post from Instagram to Facebook when you do this. To do this, you will need to link them in the Instagram app. Once linked, you can post from Facebook to Instagram using the two methods mentioned below. Let's first check how to link a Facebook page to an Instagram account and then two ways. nine0003

Link Facebook page to Instagram

Step 1: Launch the Facebook website and open the Facebook page on your computer that you want to link your Instagram to.

Step 2: On the page, click "Settings" on the left sidebar.

Step 3: On the left sidebar, click Instagram.

Step 4: Click the "Login" button next to "Add your Instagram" and log in with your Instagram credentials. nine0003

Now let's test two methods.

Method 1: Publish Directly

In this method, you need to select Instagram each time you create a post. Don't get confused. Here are the steps in detail.

Step 1: Open your Facebook page.

Step 2: Click on the Write message/Compose message box. I hope you see the option to post on Instagram.

Step 3 : Add a photo and check the box next to Instagram. Finally, click the "Share Now" button. Your photo will be published to both Facebook and Instagram. nine0003

Method 2: Post from Facebook to Instagram using Facebook Business

In this method, you will use Facebook Business to cross-post from Facebook to Instagram. Facebook Business Suite offers many tools to manage your Facebook and Instagram accounts in one place. You can check messages from Facebook and Instagram in one place, create posts, view statistics and more.

Here are the steps in detail:

Step 1: Connect your Facebook and Instagram account as shown in the Link Facebook Page to Instagram section above. If that doesn't work, you can also connect Instagram from Facebook Business.

To do this, open business.facebook.com. Make sure the right Facebook page is displayed in the top left corner. Use the small arrow next to the page name to switch between pages if you have multiple Facebook pages.

Once on the right page, click "Settings" on the left sidebar.

Click on the Instagram connection on the left sidebar and sign in to your Instagram account to connect to it using the "Connect account" button.

Step 2 : After the accounts are successfully linked, click "Home" in Facebook Business on the left sidebar.

Step 3: Click the Create Publication button.

Step 4: A new window will open. Add your photo or video using the Add Photo/Add Video buttons. Make sure the box next to Instagram under "Placements" is checked. Finally, click the "Publish" button.

Share Facebook posts with Instagram on a mobile device

Since the Facebook mobile apps do not support the above methods, you can try an alternative way or hack to cross-post.

Open any published photo on Facebook by clicking on it. This will open the image in full screen mode. Then click on the three-dot icon in the top right corner and click "Share External". nine0003

Select Feed from the menu. This will open the photo in the Instagram app. You can even select "Stories" to post them to Instagram Stories. Finally, post it to Instagram.

Although the above method is not the correct way to cross-post, it has its advantages. For example, it works for both personal profiles and business pages. Plus, you don't even need to be logged into Instagram on the Facebook app to use this method. nine0003

Use third party sites

If the above methods don't work for you, you can try a third party service like Hootsuite. It offers a free plan where you can add up to three social networks, including Facebook and Instagram. You can even post to other social networks, but this will require a premium version.

Things to remember

Again, here's what you need to know when using Facebook's built-in cross-posting feature. nine0003

  • The function is limited to Facebook pages.
  • You can't post an old Facebook post to Instagram.
  • Stories cannot be shared from Facebook to Instagram.

Is there a decent alternative

As you saw above, the Facebook to Instagram cross-posting feature is currently limited in many ways. However, for cross-posting from Instagram to Facebook, things are very different.

So instead of using Facebook as your primary posting medium, you should start with Instagram and use its features to post on Facebook. Thus, you get the possibility of cross-posting from mobile applications. And you can not only publish posts, but also for stories. nine0003

In addition, you can also use it for personal Facebook profiles. That is, you can post from your Instagram profile to your Facebook profile.

The bad side

Although cross-posting is very useful, it has its drawbacks. Let's start with the fact that the audience on Instagram and Facebook is different.
