Whether you're setting up a brand new Facebook Page for your brand, or you just want to make the most of your existing one, it’s probably a smart move -- Facebook is home to nearly 2 billion monthly active users.

It should be easy enough, right? Just slap together a photo, a couple of posts, and expect the leads and customers to roll on in, right?

Wrong.

If you're not creating a Facebook Page with a comprehensive strategy to get noticed, Liked, and engaged with, the chances of actually generating leads and customers from it are pretty slim.

For example, you can’t just choose any picture -- you have to choose one that’s the right dimensions, high-resolution, and properly represents your brand. 

But it doesn’t end there -- so we compiled the tips below to make sure you're creating an engaging page that takes full advantage of everything Facebook marketing has to offer.

1) Don't create a personal profile for your business.

We’ve come across many well-meaning marketers and entrepreneurs who create personal profiles for their brands, instead of an actual Facebook Business Page. That puts you at a huge disadvantage -- you’re missing out on all of the content creation tools, paid promotional opportunities, and analytics/insights that come with a Facebook Business Page. Plus, a personal profile would require people to send you a friend request in order to engage with you, and the last thing you want to do is make that more difficult for customers.

And while you’re at it -- don’t create an additional public, “professional” profile associated with your business. For example, I already have a personal profile on Facebook that I largely keep private; the practice I’m talking about would be if I created a second, public one under the name “AmandaZW HubSpot,” or something along those lines. People usually do that to connect with professional contacts on Facebook, without letting them see personal photos or other posts. But the fact of the matter is that creating more than one personal account goes against Facebook's terms of service.

2) Avoid publishing mishaps with Page roles.

We’ve all heard those horror stories about folks who accidentally published personal content to their employers’ social media channels -- a marketer’s worst nightmare. So to avoid publishing mishaps like those, assign Facebook Business Page roles only to the employees who absolutely need it for the work they do each day. And before you do that, be sure to provide adequate training to those who are new to social media management, so they aren't confused about when they should be hitting "publish," what they should be posting, if something should be scheduled first, and who they should be posting it as.

To assign these, on your business page, click “Settings,” then click “Page Roles.”

Also, when sharing content on behalf of your brand, make sure you're posting it as your brand, and not as yourself. You can check that by going into your settings and clicking “Page Attribution.”

3) Add a recognizable profile picture.

You'll want to pick a profile picture that’s easy for your audience to recognize -- anything from a company logo for a big brand, to a headshot of yourself if you're a freelancer or consultant. Being recognizable is important to getting found and Liked, especially in Facebook Search. It’s what shows up in search results, pictured at the top of your Facebook Page, the thumbnail image that gets displayed next to your posts in people’s feeds … so choose wisely.

When choosing a photo, keep in mind that Facebook frequently changes its picture dimensions, which you can find at any given time here. As of publication, Page profile pictures display at 170x170 pixels on desktop, and 128x128 pixels on smartphones.

4) Choose an engaging cover photo.

Next, you'll need to pick an attractive cover photo. Since your cover photo takes up the most real estate above the fold on your Facebook Page, make sure you're choosing one that's high-quality and engaging to your visitors, like this one from MYOB's Facebook Page:

Keep in mind that, like profile images, Facebook Page cover photo dimensions also frequently change, so we advise keeping an eye on the official guidelines. As of publication, Page cover photos display at 820x312 pixels on computers, and 640x360 pixels on smartphones.

5) Add a call-to-action (CTA) button.

Since Facebook first launched the feature in December 2014, the options for brands to add call-to-action buttons to their Facebook Page's have vastly expanded. These are things like “Watch Video,” “Sign Up," or "Book Now" -- and each can be customized with a destination URL or piece of content of their choosing.

It’s a great way for marketers to drive more traffic to their websites, or to get more eyeballs on the Facebook content they want to promote. This is a great way for marketers to drive traffic from their Facebook Business Page back to their website. Check out how Mandarin Oriental uses the "Book Now" button in this way, to make it easier for viewers to make reservations.

To add a call-to-action to your Page, click the blue “Add a Button” box.

You'll then be able to choose which type of CTA you want to create, and which URL or existing content on your Facebook Page you want it to direct visitors to. To get data on how many people are clicking it, simply click the drop-down arrow on your button and select “View Insights.”

6) Fill out your 'About' section with basic information, and add company milestones.

We’ve arrived at one of the most important sections of your Facebook Page: the 'About' section.

Although visitors no longer see a preview of your “About” text when they land on your page -- instead, they have to click on the “About” option on the left-hand column next to your content -- it’s still one of the first places they’ll look when trying to get more information about your page.

Even within the “About” section, however, there are many options for copy to add. Consider optimizing the section that best aligns with your brand -- a general description, a mission, company information, or your story -- with brief, yet descriptive copy. By doing so, your audience can get a sense of what your Page represents before they decide to Like it.

You might also want to populate sections that allow you to record milestones and awards -- like when you launched popular products and services -- as well as the day/year your company was founded, or when you hosted major events.

7) Post photos and videos to your Timeline.

Visual content has pretty much become a requirement of any online presence, including social media channels. After all, it’s 40X more likely to get shared on social media than other types of content.

And while photos are a wonderful way to capture moments and an actual look at your brand, you should probably invest a good amount of time and other resources into video. The 2017 State of Inbound report cited video as the “main disruptor,” with 24% of marketers naming it as a top priority.

“Watch video” is one of the CTAs that Facebook allows brands to add to their Pages for a reason -- because it’s becoming one of the most popular ways to consume content. But it’s not just pre-recording videos. According to the social media channel’s newsroom, “People spend more than 3x more time watching a Facebook Live video on average compared to a video that’s no longer live.” So don’t be afraid to give viewers an in-the-moment look at what your organization does, but do make sure you’re prepared.

8) Determine the ideal timing and frequency for your posts.

An important consideration in your Facebook content strategy should be how frequently you post, and when. If you don’t post frequently enough, you won’t look as reliable or authentic -- after all, how much faith do you put in a brand that hasn’t updated its Facebook Page for several months? Post too often, however, and people might get sick of having their feeds flooded with your content.

Here’s where a social media editorial calendar can be particularly helpful. Like any other online content, it can help you establish a schedule for when you share particular posts according to season or general popularity. You’ll probably have to adjust your calendar several times, especially in the earliest stages of setting up your Page, since you’ll want to check the performance of your updates in your Facebook Insights (which you can navigate to via the tab at the very top of your page). Once you’ve observed popular times and other analytics for your first several posts, you can tailor your posting frequency and strategy accordingly.

Wondering how to schedule posts? You can either use an external publishing tool like the Social Inbox within HubSpot software, or the Facebook interface itself. For the latter, click the arrow next to the “Publish” button and click “Schedule Post.”

9) Leverage Facebook's targeting tools.

Facebook allows you to target certain audiences with specific updates -- be it gender, relationship or educational status, age, location, language, or interests, you can segment individual page posts by these criteria.

Just click the small bullseye symbol on the bottom of the post you want to publish, and you can set metrics for both a preferred audience, and one you think might not want to see your content.

10) Pin important posts to the top of your page.

When you post new content to your Facebook Page, older posts get pushed farther down your Timeline. But sometimes, you might want a specific post to stay at the top of your page for longer -- even after you publish new updates.

To solve for this, Facebook offers the ability to "pin" one post at a time to the top of your page. You can use pinned posts as a way to promote things like new lead-gen offers, upcoming events, or important product announcements.

To pin a post, click on the drop-down arrow in the top-right corner of a post on your page, and click 'Pin to Top.' It will then appear at the top of your page, flagged with a little bookmark. Just keep in mind that you can only have one pinned post at any given time.

11) Decide whether you want Facebook fans to message you privately.

If you want your Facebook fans to be able to privately message you directly through your page, definitely enable the messages feature. You can do so by going to your settings, clicking on “General” on the left-hand column, and then looking for “Messages” on the list of results.

We recommend enabling messaging on your page to make it as easy as possible for your fans to reach out to you -- but only do so if you have the time to monitor and respond to your messages. Facebook Pages now have a section that indicates how quickly a brand responds to messages, so if you don’t want that section saying that you’re slow to answer, you might just want to skip enabling that feature.

12) Monitor and respond to comments on your page.

Speaking of monitoring the interactions your fans have with your page, don't forget about comments. You can monitor and respond to comments via the 'Notifications' tab at the very top of your page. While it may not be necessary to respond to every single comment you receive, you should definitely monitor the conversations happening there (especially to stay on top of potential social media crises.

13) Promote your page to generate more followers.

Now that you've filled your page with content, it's time to promote the heck out of it.

One of the first things you can do is to create an ad promoting your Page. To do that, click the three dots at the top menu bar above your posts and select “Create Ad.” From there, Facebook will let you start creating an ad from scratch based on your goals -- things like reach, traffic, or general brand awareness. Choose yours, then scroll down and click “continue.”

After that, you can choose your targeted audience (similar to what you did with your promoted posts above), where on Facebook you want it to be placed, and your budget -- you can learn more about paying for Facebook Ads here.

You’ll probably also be asked to add some creative assets or copy. Remember, you’re paying for this, so choose something that’s going to grab attention, but also has high quality and represents your brand well.

14) Finally, measure the success of your Facebook efforts.

There are a couple of ways to execute this step. You can use something like the social media reports tool in your HubSpot software, and you can dig into your Page's Insights, which allow you to track Facebook-specific engagement metrics. Here, you'll be able to analyze things like the demographics of your Page audience and, if you reach a certain threshold, the demographics of people engaging with your page and posts. As we mentioned earlier, the latter is especially helpful to modify your Facebook content strategy to publish more of what works, and less of what doesn't. You can access your Facebook Page Insights via the tab at the top of your page.

What is a Facebook Business Page?

A Facebook Page is a public Facebook account that can be used by brands, organizations, artists and public figures. Businesses use Pages to share contact information, post updates, share content, promote events and releases, and — perhaps most importantly — connect with their Facebook audiences.

Pages can be connected to Facebook ad accounts and Facebook Shops.

How to create a Facebook Page for business

Before you can sign up for your Facebook Business Page, you need to log into your personal Facebook account. Don’t worry—the information from your personal account will not be publicly visible on your business Page.

This is simply because every business Page is managed by one or more page administrators. The administrators are people with personal Facebook accounts. Your personal account works like the key to let you into your new business Page. If you have team members helping you with your Page, their personal accounts will also unlock their specific roles and capabilities.

So, if you’re not already logged into your personal account, log in now, then dive into the Page creation steps.

Step 1: Sign up

Go to facebook.com/pages/create.

Enter your business information in the panel on the left. As you do so, the page preview will update in real time on the right.

For your page name, use your business name or the name people are likely to search for when trying to find your business.

For category, type a word or two that describes your business and Facebook will suggest some options. You can choose up to three of the suggestions.

Next, fill in the Description field. This is a short description that appears in search results. It should be just a couple of sentences (maximum 255 characters).

When you’re happy with your description, click Create Page.

Step 2. Add pictures

Next, you’ll upload a profile and cover images for your Facebook Page. It’s important to create a good visual first impression, so choose wisely here. Make sure the photos you choose align with your brand and are easily identifiable with your business.

You’ll upload your profile photo first. This image accompanies your business name in search results and when you interact with users. It also appears on the top left of your Facebook Page.

If you have a recognizable brand, using your logo is probably the safest way to go. If you’re a celebrity or public figure, a picture of your face will work like a charm. And if you’re a local business, try a well-shot image of your signature offering. The important thing is to help a potential follower or customer to recognize your page immediately.

As we explain in our post on the best image sizes for all social networks, your profile image should be 170 x 170 pixels. It will be cropped to a circle, so don’t put any critical details in the corners.

Once you’ve chosen a great photo, click Add Profile Picture.

Now it’s time to choose your Facebook cover image, the most prominent image on your Page.

This image should capture the essence of your business and convey your business or brand personality. Facebook recommends you choose an image that’s 1640 x 856 pixels.

Once you’ve selected an appropriate image, click Add Cover Photo.

After you upload the photos, you can use the buttons in the top right of the preview to toggle between desktop and mobile views. Use these to make sure you’re happy with how your images look in both displays. You can drag the images in the left column to adjust their positioning.

When you’re happy with your selections, click Save.

Ta-da! You have a Facebook Business Page, although it is extremely sparse.

Of course, while the skeleton of the Facebook Page for your business is now in place, you’ve still got a lot of work to do before you share it with your audience.

Step 3. Connect your business to WhatsApp (optional)

After you click Save, you’ll see a pop-up box asking if you want to connect your business to WhatsApp. This is optional, but it does allow you to add a WhatsApp button to your page, or send people to WhatsApp from Facebook ads.

If you want to connect your business to WhatsApp, click Send Code. Otherwise, close the window to continue without connecting WhatsApp. You’ll get one more pop-up box asking if you’re sure. Since we’re skipping this, for now, we’ll click Leave.

Step 4: Create your username

Your username, also called your vanity URL, is how you tell people where to find you on Facebook.

Your username can be up to 50 characters long, but don’t use extra characters just because you can. You want it to be easy to type and easy to remember. Your business name or some obvious variation of it is a safe bet.

To create your username, click Create Username on the Page preview.

Enter the name you want to use. Facebook will let you know if it’s available. If you get a green checkmark, you’re good to go. Click Create Username.

You’ll get a confirmation pop-up. Just click Done.

Step 5: Add your business details

While you might be tempted to leave the details for later, it’s important to fill out all of the fields in your Facebook Page’s About section right from the start.

As Facebook is often the very first place a customer goes to get information about you, having it all there is important. For example, if someone is looking for a business that’s open till 9, they want to confirm this information on your Page. If they can’t find it, they’ll surely keep looking until they find another place that’s more forthcoming.

Fortunately, Facebook makes this very easy to complete. Simply scroll down on your Page view to the section called Set Your Page Up for Success and expand the item called Provide Info and Preferences.

Fill in the appropriate details here, starting with your website.

If your business is open to the public during specific hours, make sure to enter those here. This information appears in search results.

Don’t forget to complete the Add an action button section.

Facebook’s built-in call-to-action button makes it very easy to give the consumer what they’re looking for and it allows them to engage with your business in real time.

The right CTA button will encourage visitors to learn more about your business, shop, download your app, or book an appointment.

To add your CTA, click the blue box that says Add Button, then choose which kind of button you want.

If you don’t want to complete all of these steps now, you can always access them later. In the Manage Page menu on the left, just scroll down to Edit Page Info.

If at any time you want to take your Facebook Business Page offline while you work on the details, you can choose to unpublish your page. From the Manage Page menu, click Settings, then General. Click Page Visibility and change the status to Page unpublished.

Follow the same steps to republish your page when you’re ready.

Step 6. Create your first post

Before you start inviting people to like the Facebook Page for your business, you should post some valuable content. You can create your own posts, or share relevant content from thought leaders in your industry.

You could also create a specific type of post, like an event or offer—just click one of the options in the Create box at the top of your page.

Make sure that whatever you post offers value for your visitors when they arrive at your Facebook Business Page, so they’ll be inclined to stick around.

Step 7. Invite an audience

Your Facebook Business Page now represents a robust online presence that will make potential customers and fans feel comfortable interacting with you.

Now you need to get some followers!

Start by inviting your existing Facebook friends to like your Page. To do so, just scroll down to the bottom of the Set Your Page up for Success box and expand the section called Introduce Your Page.

Click the blue Invite Friends button to bring up a list of your personal Facebook friends. Select which friends you want to invite, then click Send Invites.

Use your other channels, like your website and Twitter, to promote your new page. Add “follow us” logos on your promotional materials and email signature. If you’re comfortable doing so, you can ask your customers to review you on Facebook, too.

How to optimize your Facebook Business Page

Now that you know how to create a Facebook Page for business, it’s time to think about ways to optimize your Page. These strategies will help maximize engagement so you meet your Facebook (and social media) marketing goals.

Here’s a quick video overview of the steps you can take to optimize your Facebook Business Page. We’ll dig into these components in more detail below.

Add a pinned post

Is there important information you want all visitors to your Page to see? A promotion you don’t want them to miss? A top-performing piece of content you want to show off? Put it in a pinned post.

A pinned post sits at the top of your Facebook Business Page, just under your cover image. It’s a great place to put an attention-grabbing item that will draw your visitors in and make them want to stick around.

Start by publishing a new post, or scrolling down your feed to find an existing post you want to pin to the top of your Page. Click the three dots on the top right of the post, then click Pin to Top of Page.

Once you’ve pinned the post, it will appear under the heading PINNED POST at the top of your page. This is only for your internal view. To visitors, it will just show as the first item under Posts, with a blue thumbtack icon to indicate it’s pinned.

Make the most of templates and tabs

Tabs are the different sections of your Facebook Page, like the About section and Photos. You can customize which tabs you want to include and the order in which they appear in the left Manage Page menu.

Each template has a set of buttons and tabs designed for particular types of business. For example, the Restaurants & Cafes template includes tabs for a menu, offers and reviews.

To access templates and tabs, click Settings in the Manage Page menu, then Templates and Tabs.

Like other Pages

Since Facebook is, after all, a social network, it’s a good idea to use your Page to build a community for your business.

One way to build community is to connect with other Pages that are relevant to your business (but not competitors).

For example, if you run a shop in a popular shopping area or mall, you could connect with other shops in the same area. Think of this as an online version of your local business improvement association or chamber of commerce.

If you have a virtual business, you could connect with other businesses in your industry that could provide additional value for your followers without competing directly with your products.

To follow other businesses, navigate to their Facebook page, then click the more icon (three dots) under the page’s cover photo. Click Like as Your Page. If you have more than one Facebook Business Page, choose which one you want to use to like the other business, then click Submit.

Pages will receive a notification when you like them and may check out your Page or even give you a like in return.

Your business page gets a news feed separate from your personal profile, so you can interact with all the businesses you follow from your business profile. To see all the content from the Pages you’ve liked as your Page, just select your Page and click News Feed in the left menu. If you haven’t liked any Pages yet, Facebook will provide a list of suggestions to get you started.

Join Groups as your Page

Facebook Groups represent an organic opportunity to reach many people who are interested in a specific topic, but without paying for ads. Joining and posting to a relevant Group as your Facebook Page helps anyone who is curious about your post click through to your business page, rather than your personal profile. Here’s a quick tutorial that explains how to join as a Page (it can be tricky!)

Review your settings

Your Facebook Page settings allow you to get into some pretty fine detail about who can administer the Page, where your posts are visible, words banned from the Page, and so on. You can also see people and Pages who have liked your page, control your notifications, and so much more.

Think of the Settings tab as your behind-the-scenes console for every adjustable parameter available to you. Take a few minutes to go through each setting and make sure that it’s optimized for how you want to manage the Page and how you want your audience to interact with you.

To access your settings, just click Settings at the bottom of the Manage Page menu.

Check your settings regularly, as your preferences and requirements may change as your business—and social following—grows.

Learn from Page Insights

The more information you have about your audience, the more content you can create to satisfy their needs.

Facebook Page Insights makes it easy to gather data about how your fans are interacting with your Page and the content you share. To access Page Insights, click Insights in the Manage Page menu.

Insights gives you information about your Page’s overall performance, including some data on audience demographics and engagement. You can see metrics on your posts so you can understand how many people you’re reaching.

You’ll also see how many comments and reactions are gained from specific posts—data that helps you plan future content.

A key feature of Insights is the ability to see how many people have clicked on your call-to-action button, website, phone number, and address. This data is divided by demographics such as age, gender, country, city and device, making it easier for you to tailor future content to your audience. To access this information click Actions on Page in the Manage Page menu.

Backlinks help boost the credibility of your Facebook Business Page and may help improve your search engine ranking. They also help direct new potential followers to your page.

Include a link to your Facebook Page at the bottom of your blog posts and where appropriate on your website. Encourage other companies and bloggers to do the same when you collaborate.

The same principle should be followed on the business pages of companies. The only difference is that they have more advanced functionality. There you can create notes (similar to articles in VK, but in a simplified form), vacancies, product offers at a discount, conferences, advertising.

Facebook post size, pictures for it and main functions

The optimal size of regular images is 1200*630 pixels. Maximum aspect ratio: 2048*2048 pixels. For a picture with a link (articles shared from the site) -– 470 * 246. Infographic with link –– 158*237. Video –– 1200*675. nine0003

As for the number of characters in a note, it is limited to 63000 characters. At the same time, it must be remembered that very long materials are rarely read out. Only the first 3000 characters will be visible, the rest will be cut off by the "Read More" link. It opens in a new tab. An entry up to 3000 is limited to the "More" button, which simply expands it on the same page.

How to tag a person in a Facebook post
