Several months ago, I cranked out a quick post that discussed using a Lincoln Facebook page and Twitter posts to engage kids in historical thinking and conversation.

I really didn’t think that much about it. It seemed to work with the teachers and students I tried it with and so wanted to share the idea with all of you.

Well . . . that particular post is still getting lots of hits and I continue to get emails from teachers asking for blank Facebook pages or blank Facebook templates to use with their kids.

Of course, the best solution would be to actually create a Facebook page for Dwight Eisenhower or Benjamin Banneker or whomever. Then simply edit that page as if you are Ike or Ben.

But Facebook has gotten a bit touchy about that and will probably end up deleting your brand-new fake Ike page. Plus, I don’t know of very many schools that allow Facebook through their internet filters.

The next best thing? Some sort of off-line template.

So . . . today I’ll share a quick overview of what I do to create a blank page and then provide a sample or two.

1. Start by taking a screenshot of a Facebook profile page. If you don’t have a Facebook account, ask one your students to share their profile.

2. Paste the screenshot into some sort of word processing or presentation software. I use Pages on a Mac. But this would work with Powerpoint, MS Word, Keynote . . . just about any software that provides a way to paste in an image (the screenshot) and allows you to insert a text box or shape that can edited.

3. Create text boxes or shapes and place them over the areas of the Facebook screenshot that are specific to your profile. Be sure to leave the headers and titles of those areas visible as much as possible.

This is what the template looks like at this point. I still need to cover my pic and name but you get the idea.

4. Edit each text box or shape so that they have no borders and that the fill color is white.

It should now look something like this:

5. Once everything is covered with white shapes, you can begin to insert photos and boxes with appropriate text. You can do this yourself or you can simply give the kids a paper copy and have them fill in the spaces with pencil. Even better, share the digital template with them. They can then create their own version with pasted images and text boxes using whatever software is available.

If I were a kid, I would prefer to edit the page using digital tools. But that’s just me!

6. Obviously, you can start with a screenshot of any Facebook page such as the Photos or Info pages.

7. If you do a search on Google, you can find fonts that claim to be the official Facebook font. But I just use Lucinda Grande in my text boxes and it looks pretty good.

Facebook is the place that kids hang out after school. Heck, it’s the place many of them hang out during school. It is definitely a platform they are comfortable with communicating on. Why not use student enthusiasm for Facebook to generate learning opportunities in the classroom?

I have seen several classes in the past few weeks work on Facebook projects. Students love them. These projects appeal to students because it is communication at their level. What I like about the project is that creating a fake Facebook profile requires a great deal of higher level thinking. Student have to take information and transform it. This forces students to be very creative. A fake Facebook page is an excellent way to see if student understand the concept behind a book, character, historical figure or even a science concept.

Science might be a little harder, but imagine students pretend that they are a part of a chemical reaction. They could create a profile for a certain compound and tell it’s part in the reaction through the wall posts. This might sound a bit crazy, but I think students would really get into it.

There are several different platforms for doing Facebook projects in the classroom. Here are some I have looked at in the past week:

Fakebook: This online app is the best I have seen. It is web based and easy to use. Students fill in the blanks, upload pictures and write status updates for the different people on the wall. I have not yet used this app with students, but I plan on using it this week. Sometimes, when a bunch of students use an app like this, we see how good it really works. I’ll be sure to let you know.

My Fake Wall: This is a cool template, much like Fakebook. I really like how it is set up. The app is web based and allows students to build as big a page as they like. The one draw back is that it doesn’t seem to work consistently. I have used this with several classes now, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t which creates quite the headache if this is the plan for class on a particular day. That having been said, it is still worth a try because it is so much fun.

PowerPoint template: This page template opens in PowerPoint, but functions surprisingly as a Facebook page. Adding pictures and status text is quite easy without creating a mess of the page. This is a three page template giving students quite a bit of creative license in a non-web based platform.

MS Word template: This template is a little harder to use and doesn’t look quite as good as the others, but it is another option. It does work in Word which is a plus if that is what students are used to using.

PhotoShop template (PSD): This one represents the most recent design of templates and rubrics for a Facebook project using a template created with Photoshop. This looks like another great option depending on your goals for the project.

Applying predefined field values 

On the Layout tab, click the Fields button.

Note: If the document contains multiple sections, the new fields will only be applied to the selected ones.

Creating a custom field

On tab Layout press button Fields .
Select item Custom fields .
On the tab Fields , use the up and down arrow buttons to enter the required values.
When everything is ready, press the OK button .

Set up the fields.
Press button Default .

Confirm selection.

Copying a page in a single-page document

If there is only one page in the document, the easiest way to copy it is to use the command Select All .

Press CTRL+A to select all text in the document. nine0003
Tip: You can also place the cursor in the left margin and quickly click the left mouse button three times in succession.
Press CTRL+C to copy the entire selection.

Note: Note that this will select everything in the document. This method is best used to copy a document that contains only one page. nine0003

Copying a page in a multipage document

If your Word document contains several pages, we recommend that you select the desired text manually and copy it.

Place the cursor at the beginning of the text you want to copy.
Click and drag the cursor down the page. nine0003
Press CTRL+C.

Tip: Another way to copy the selected text is to click the Copy button on the Home tab .

Paste copied text on another page

After copying the contents of a page, you can paste it on another page or in a new document. nine0003

Place the cursor at the bottom of the page before the copied page.
Click Insert > Blank Page to add a new page.

Note: You can also add a page break to move from the current page to the next. To paste it, press CTRL+ENTER. nine0003
