Send an Instagram Direct Message With These 5 Easy Steps

As the kids say these days, “it goes down in the DMs”.

How to DM on Instagram

  1. Open Instagram and log in to your account
  2. Tap the paper airplane in the top right corner
  3. Using the plus sign, select your recipient(s)
  4. Type your message, select a photo, or take a photo, and hit send!

Admittedly, I don’t know what “it” is, and I can’t say with any speck of certainty that anybody, regardless of age, actually says that.

Either way, Instagram’s introduction of Instagram Direct, the photo-sharing platform’s direct messaging feature, was an exciting new release when it launched in 2013.

Instagram was always a public-facing platform. To interact with other accounts, users had to like or comment on their posts. When Instagram Direct was introduced, users who followed each other were able to send private, one-to-one messages for the first time.

In this guide, we’ll cover the introduction of Instagram Direct, what it is, and why it was such a big deal. Plus, we’ll take you step-by-step through sending different types of Direct Messages, including chat-like text messages, videos, disappearing pictures, and more!

Let’s get started!

First things first – what is Instagram Direct? Or in this case, an Instagram DM (direct message).

What is a DM on Instagram?

First things first – let's define DM. In this case, DM stands for direct message – or a message sent privately to one (or a few) people.

So now that we have the DM definition, we can dive a bit deeper into how to send a message on Instagram and why the feature was introduced.

Instagram Direct is Instagram’s private messaging feature. Kevin Systrom, Instagram founder, announced it at a press event in New York on December 12, 2013. This was an exciting moment for the photo-sharing platform, as it was the first time it explored one-to-one messaging on an otherwise public platform.

The video above accompanied Systrom’s announcement and briefly explored the new feature's main functionalities.

Interestingly, this announcement came shortly after Instagram was acquired by Facebook, a platform that launched its private messenger back in 2008.

In 2013, private social media messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger were continuing to dominate (with the latter already seeing nearly 200 million monthly active users). Even more importantly, Snapchat, the multimedia messaging app, was quickly gaining traction. Introducing a direct messaging feature was a smart (and maybe even essential) move by Instagram.

Through Instagram Direct, users can send photos or videos that they take (or upload from their phone’s photo library), posts they saw in the feed, disappearing photos and videos (think Snapchat), other user’s Instagram stories, hashtags, and location pages.

Instagram also recently added a green dot next to an Instagram user’s profile picture that indicates when they’re logged on to Instagram and available to chat.

An Instagram DM can be sent to one person, or, up to 32 people in a group chat! (If you want to share private Instagram stories with more than 32 people, consider making an Instagram close friends list.)

As of 2018, users can use Instagram direct messaging to video chat with just one person or a group of up to four different people. This new feature works similar to FaceTime or Google Hangout, with users able to video chat anyone with whom they have a direct message thread open.

Today, Instagram Direct has evolved to be a valuable form of Instagram marketing. Organizations with an Instagram business profile can use the tool to offer social media customer service, and users can use the tool to connect with their favorite brands.

Of course, it would be unfair to tell you about all of these exciting features without telling you how to use them! These step-by-step instructions will give you all of the information you need to start chatting with your friends and followers via Instagram DM.

How to DM on Instagram

As mentioned above, there are plenty of ways to DM on Instagram. That said, there are definitely two methods you’re more likely to use than others. In this guide, we’ll give you step-by-step instructions on:

  • How to send a picture, video, or chat in a DM
  • How to send a post from your Instagram feed in a DM

Let’s get started!

How to send a picture, video, or chat in a DM

Have you ever taken a picture and immediately thought of a friend who just needed to see it? Or, maybe you ran into an old college acquaintance while running errands and want to reach out, but you forgot to exchange phone numbers.

Whatever your reasoning may be, sending a chat, picture, or video by Instagram DM can be a great way to reach people!

Luckily, this is a simple process consisting of just a few steps.

1. Open Instagram and log into your account

This first step is easy – and if you’re anything like me, something you already do every single day. Grab your phone, open up your Instagram app, and log in to your account. As a heads up, our instructions and screenshots refer to sending an Instagram DM from an iPhone. However, the process should look similar (if not identical) on Android devices.

2. Tap the paper airplane button in the top right corner, or, swipe left from anywhere in the Feed

When you tap on the paper airplane button or swipe left, you’ll be brought to the screen from which you’ll send your DM. If you have existing conversations (or if you’ve ever been sent a DM before), they’ll appear on this screen.

3. Tap the plus sign in the top right corner

To send a new message, tap the plus sign in the top right corner. This will bring you to the screen where you select the person (or persons) to whom you’d like to send the message.

4. Select your recipient(s)

Instagram will pull up a list of suggested accounts to which you may want to send your direct message. If you don’t see your intended recipient, use the search bar at the top of the screen to find them, searching by either their username or full name. When you’ve selected your recipient, click “Next” in the top right corner.

5. To send a written message:

To send a chat, type your message and click send.

To take a picture or video to send:

To take a new picture or video to send, tap the camera button to the left of the chat-box. If you’ve posted an Instagram story before, this screen should look familiar! You can take a picture or video as normal, or take advantage of some of Instagram’s fun features like Boomerangs, filters, and more.

Once you take your picture, you’ll have a few options on how it will appear to your recipient. At this point, you’ll choose between:

  • Having the photo or video appear or play once, and then disappear (like the first version of Snapchat)
  • Having the photo or video appear or play once, but allow your recipient one replay after that (like Snapchat’s current functionality)
  • Having the photo remain in your private chat with the recipient

Select the way you would like your picture or video to appear, and hit send!

To send a picture or video from your photo library:

To send a picture or video from your photo library, tap the button to the right of your chat-box. This button looks like a landscape scene. This will pull up your phone’s camera roll, from which you can select a photo or video. Once you select your image, click send. Keep in mind that for the best possible quality, the picture or video should fit the standard Instagram story dimensions.

There you have it! From there, you can continue chatting back and forth, or send additional content.

How to send a post from your Instagram feed in a DM

Now that Instagram is littered with meme accounts (I’m not complaining), it’s a pretty regular occurrence to see something in your feed that makes you laugh out loud. And what’s better than laughing alone? Laughing with friends, of course!

Luckily, Instagram makes it easy to send posts directly from the feed to your friends and followers. The original poster will not know that you sent their Instagram post, nor will the messages appear in the Instagram feed, search, or your profile.

However, keep in mind that if the original poster has a private Instagram profile, your recipient won’t be able to see the post unless they follow the account that posted it. If the original poster has a public Instagram profile, then you’re good to go!

Now, here’s how to send a post directly from your Instagram feed. We’ll skip the steps that require opening Instagram and logging in – if you’ve found something you want to share, we can safely assume you’ve done that already!

1. Tap the paper airplane button below the image you want to share

When you tap on the paper plane image below the image you want to share, Instagram will pull up a list of your existing conversations. If you don’t see your intended recipient(s), simply use the search bar to find their account and select their Instagram handle from the list.

2. Add an optional message, or send without one

After you select your recipient, you can opt to type a message that will send along with the post. Consider including a message that provides more context on the image or explains why the post made you think of this particular person. Instagram DMs are a great way to connect with friends and family, so take advantage of the opportunity to include a personalized message!

Hint: If your recipient can’t see the post, no need for them to follow the account! Simply take a screenshot on your Android or iPhone and send the screenshot via DM using the first set of instructions.

Are you ready to slide into the DMs?

Hopefully, this post has taught you exactly how to DM on Instagram. Instagram’s direct message feature is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family, or, get in touch with those acquaintances with whom you haven’t yet exchanged numbers. Whichever way you use it, Instagram Direct was an exciting new feature that isn’t going away soon.

Cause 1: Basic problems

Most often, problems with sending a message via Direct to Instagram are global, occurring simultaneously for many users of the social network due to crashes on the server side. And although the only thing that can be done in this case is to wait a while, you can still additionally visit a special site to make sure there are problems.

View Instagram job status on Downdetector

With the help of comments here you can also report your situation and, even if the problem is not global, get help in troubleshooting. For the rest, the main attention should be paid to the overall health status of the social network and a live map of failures. nine0003

Cause 2: Limits exceeded

Quite often, active Instagram users encounter errors right during the publication of messages without any additional notifications. This happens, as a rule, due to exceeding the limits on the number of sent letters, whether it be a daily or hourly standard set by the administration.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine the exact number of messages, since the limits vary greatly in different cases, but at the same time, the situation should probably stabilize one day after the restrictions are updated. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that due to possible spam complaints, as well as too frequent sending of letters on an ongoing basis, a long-term decrease in the allowed number of messages is possible, down to one within a few minutes. nine0003

Reason 3: Internet connection

Another common problem that directly affects the ability to conduct correspondence via Direct is a missing or simply unstable Internet connection. You can check the network for faults by measuring the speed, although the indicators themselves do not play a special role, and, if necessary, reconfigure the connection.

Cause 4: Outdated software version

Lack of fresh updates of the official application, especially for a long period of time, may cause malfunctions of some functions, including Direct. As you might guess, you can get rid of the problem by installing the latest version of the mobile client from the page in the branded application store.

Instagram page on the App Store
Instagram page on the Google Play Store

There is also a reverse situation, when errors occur after installing a fresh version due to certain flaws. These kinds of problems usually disappear automatically after a certain period of time and the next update of the client.

Cause 5: Application not working properly

Occasionally, Instagram can experience errors that have nothing to do with your actions or servers, but affect the functionality of most features. A fairly reliable solution in this case is to clear the application data by system or third-party tools according to the appropriate instructions. nine0003

More: Clearing the application cache on the phone

In addition, often the only way out of the situation is to completely uninstall and reinstall the program from official sources. You can familiarize yourself with the removal procedure in separate instructions, while Instagram download links for different platforms were indicated earlier.

Cause 6: Operating system version

When using a device with an outdated OS version, even if the application itself is available for installation from official sources, some functions may not work correctly. Actually, to fix problems, you should update the operating system in any convenient way or purchase a new device. nine0003

Contact support

Some problems, although quite rare, are individual in nature and can only be resolved by contacting Instagram support. For this reason, if the proposed solutions did not affect the situation with sending messages via Direct, be sure to contact the specialists using the appropriate form on a separate page and describe the problem in as much detail as possible, adding several screenshots if possible. nine0003

We tell you what a mailing list on Instagram is: when and to whom it will be useful.

Friends, welcome! The Boss.Direct team is in touch.
Instagram chatbot with mailing functionality👇

In pursuit of new subscribers-clients, we often underestimate the capabilities of the existing audience. But it can be the best - loyal customers. nine0003

In the article we will figure out how to increase sales many times without attracting a new audience.

Newsletter on Instagram: what is it?

Newsletter on Instagram is a quick targeted way to convey information to the audience.

The main purpose of the newsletter is sales. This is a truly underestimated tool that can increase sales at times, and for a penny. Provided that the text of the mailing will correspond to the interests of the potential client. And will ship at moderate intervals. nine0003

We will analyze recommendations for setting up the most effective messaging on Instagram in a separate block.

Please note that we are talking about sending via Instagram. Where people go daily and check private messages on their own.

By e-mail, the effect is completely different. With rare exceptions, the person will either delete the message immediately, or it will automatically be moved to spam. But we don’t recommend attacking like this even on Instagram:

Negative Instagram mailing example boss.direct

When launching a newsletter on Instagram, text plays a huge role. It should be the most "selling" and the most unlike spam text. The case when you can even test a typo like:

An example of a newsletter on Instagram boss.direct

If you trust Google, then the main disadvantage of sending to Instagram is the risk of blocking your account. But if you delve deeper and study the algorithms, you can understand that sending to Instagram is an absolutely safe tool....

Newsletter on Instagram: when and to whom it will be useful

Instagram newsletter is ideal for engaging existing followers - regular or potential customers. And as part of security, not suitable for attracting new subscribers.

We do not recommend mass mailing to new faces or competitors' clients. We recommend using the mailing list to engage the existing audience and cultivate loyalty.

Sending messages in the first place, will be useful to those who want to increase sales. It will also be useful for engaging the audience. nine0003

The tasks of posting on Instagram can be different:

- to present a novelty;
- tell about the action;
- remind about the need for an appointment, etc.

For example, you have published an important post. We need maximum publicity, but Instagram is harmful and only shows it to 30% of the audience. An ideal case for using the newsletter on Instagram. Send the post to the available dialogues. It's better than retargeting.

First make sure that the "important post" is a sales post:

Another example - you have a new special offer and you want everyone to know about it. Or you launched an action, and you need to involve as many people as possible!

You have planned an event, how to call all the clients? Send out invitations!

Sales have fallen, you need to urgently remind yourself. Send information to customers with whom you previously had a dialogue.

Benefits of mass mailing on Instagram:

  • effectively and quickly informs the audience; nine0006
  • ease of process - mailing can be completely delegated;
  • improves target results. There is no 100% conversion from a target, but by supplementing the target with a newsletter, you can achieve the ideal conversion;
  • low price - more profitable than retargeting. Even if everything is delegated: the copywriter will write the text, the bot will send messages;
  • can be included in the sales funnel and constantly remind you of yourself. nine0006

How to improve the results of targeted advertising using a bot:

Instagram posting limits

Instagram is constantly updating its policy and is increasingly blocking users for spam. They can be blocked if: you often send messages, send out messages with the same frequency, the same type of texts.

This is especially true for new accounts. From the moment of registration 12-20 days for you close attention. The total limit of actions on the page should not exceed 500 (including likes, subscriptions, comments, etc.). nine0003

Current limits for sending messages:

  • to new subscribers - 70 sms/day
  • to persons not subscribed to the profile - 50 sms/day

Life hack: limits are irrelevant when mailing to Instagram subscribers with whom ALREADY had a dialogue

Hence our task is to involve as many audiences as possible in the dialogue. The easiest way to do this is through engaging stories:

You can also diversify content and engage with games:

Or you can use an even more original tool and run a mask:

Since the policy is constantly updated, the boss.direct Instagram distribution service reinsures and completely imitates the user's cycle of actions. Sends messages every 15-20 seconds, and performs all the actions that a person would take when sending messages. Imitation of a sociable energetic person.

How to make a newsletter on Instagram: instructions and examples

During the mailing, the subscriber can go to your profile and look through the posts, relevant, stories. The task of the profile with all its appearance is to close the objections of a potential client and encourage them to close the deal.

We have already told you how to make a selling profile on Instagram. Grab free life hacks:

1. Sales start with analysis. You need to clearly understand who your target audience is. And it is better to make a portrait of the client. This is a source of reliable information. And in the future - the source of the most effective advertising. nine0003

Crowd phrases don't work. A person needs a sense of individual approach. It should feel like a recommendation from a friend.

2. We compose the mailing text that will interest the potential client and involve him in the dialogue. These can be: promotions, selection tips, gift ideas, etc.

Example for food delivery:

Ice cream ads are best sent out during the day, at the height of the heat.

The dialogue can be started with a question. How to try on a friendly note to understand what will suit the client. Close his objections and help make a choice.

3. If you are the lucky owner of a lot of time, or if you only have 10-30 dialogues with clients, then you can create templates and send them to the target audience manually. Get a free newsletter on Instagram. But if you have a lot of dialogues, then this is not the most profitable way. More on that in the next block.

4. Analysis of the results and determination of the most effective distribution option.

nine0002 Instagram mailing service

The safest and most profitable way to quickly send to Instagram is to delegate the process to an automated service - a bot. Firstly, because the Instagram bot knows and adheres to the limits. Secondly, the bot will send messages much faster than a human. And thirdly, because he does not have a human factor and he cannot deviate from the installation.

Boss.Direct is a service where you can set up a chatbot and Instagram mailings. Service that increases sales by 69%. Suitable for both professionals and beginners in promotion and sales.

Boss.Direct is configured in such a way that it is impossible to perform actions that are dangerous for the account. Bot is not designed to send messages when subscribed. It is designed only to work with those subscribers with whom there has already been a dialogue. For Instagram algorithms, this is a fundamental difference. And only in this way mailing is of great benefit, not harm. Also, the service is for security, so it does not provide the ability to send links in mailing lists. nine0003

Also, if a client writes a message that contains one of the keys like "don't send me such messages again / unsubscribe me from the mailing list", the Instagram feed program will automatically transfer the client to the "Unsubscribed" group. And the newsletter will not come to them.

So, to start auto mailing you need to register on the site👇

Unload audience in the "customers" section:

Instagram messaging service boss.direct

Immediately after registration, you can download dialogs for the last 30 days. If the account was already in the system, then unloading is possible with a longer period.

Instagram messaging service boss.direct

Go to the "newsletters" section and click "create a newsletter":

Instagram messaging service boss.direct

A window will appear with the settings for automatic distribution on Instagram to those people with whom there was a dialogue. nine0003

Instagram messaging service boss.direct

On the left, we compose several variants of one sentence through the "|" symbol. So that clients do not receive the same messages, but are collected randomly. So Instagram will not be suspected of spam.

[Hello|Greetings|Good day] means that each client will get one of the greeting options

Additionally, you can configure mailing filters on Instagram. Boss.Direct has a CRM system with the ability to send messages to a specific group of people. nine0003

For example, a customer asked you for a price. Automatically got into a group called "Learned the price". Then you can send messages to this group of people to close sales.

Automated mailing to Direct Instagram

The bot can send out a post or stories that are fixed in the current ones. And not only their own, but also from any open accounts.

In addition to mailing, in Boss.Direct you can set up auto-reply in Direct. This will help to respond to potential customers in a timely manner (≈4 sec). nine0003

For security reasons, it is not possible to send a link in the mailing list. But if necessary, this can be done by a chatbot. You can ask a question in the mailing list in such a way that the client answers with a certain phrase/word. Then the chatbot will send an auto-response - a link.

In the same way, you can create different groups of clients to send to Instagram. For example, you can conduct a survey "Are there any young mothers among you? Send + to Direct. " You can save this audience in the service. And in the future, do targeted mailings that will be useful to mothers. nine0003

You can divide the audience into groups:

  • cold audience;
  • already bought;
  • boost.

And select the mailing list for each group very precisely. Some - to involve, others to remind themselves and close for another sale, the third to help make the first purchase.

The bot can carry on a dialogue for a long time without your intervention. Let's say you are a manicurist and launched a mailing list on Instagram:

Hello!
I bought the trendy colors of the spring-summer 2021 season.
Display palette?

The client answers "yes/come on/send", etc. The bot sees a "key", in response to which it attaches a photo of the palette and sends the following message:

How are you? Sign you up for coverage?

If the client replies with a key again, then the bot continues. What day to book? For what time? Now I'll check the free windows. Do you want a manicure or pedicure? By the way, we have a discount for the complex...

This ideal auto-interlocutor answers in seconds. And closes the registration for the service!

There are a lot of variations, it all depends on your imagination.

Tips for automatic posting on Instagram

1. Pay the most attention to the text - not spammed text in the language of the client's interests. It should be short and useful to the client. And constant randomization, as mentioned above (Hi / Hello / Good afternoon, we want to invite you ...)

2. Friendly tone. This doesn't just apply to text style. You need to build a trusting relationship with the client. Don't try to cheat. Study the needs and offer really what suits the person. Unless, of course, you want to work long hours

3. Do not send messages. It should be light and unobtrusive, about once a month

4.
