How to Start a Facebook Secret Conversation (+Keep Your Messages Safe)

If you’ve ever sent a message you didn’t want to fall into the wrong hands, you know how stressful hitting send can feel.

Whether you’re sending a personal message regarding matters of health, or you’re throwing a surprise party for a friend, making sure that your message is seen by only the person you’re sending it to can be crucial. Some social media apps have features for a more secure messaging option, like the chat feature on Snapchat.

For users who don’t feel comfortable carrying on conversations on Snapchat, there’s the Facebook Secret Conversation feature within Facebook Messenger. It’s easy to do and you have full control over when the messages disappear.

How to start a Facebook Secret Conversation:

  1. Tap the square icon in the top right corner of the Facebook Messenger screen
  2. Select Secret in the top right corner
  3. Search for the person you'd like to message in secret
  4. Tap the timer icon in the text box to choose when messages disappear.

Turn on Facebook Secret Conversations

Before you can have a secret conversation using Facebook Messenger, make sure this feature is turned on. It’s easy to do, and the steps are below.

Select Profile Picture

From the home screen of Facebook Messenger, select your profile picture in the top left corner.

Scroll to Secret Conversations

From there, scroll to the settings for Secret Conversations.

Switch On

If it isn’t already, switch the Secret Conversations feature on. When it is, conversations that take place in secret mode will be end-to-end encrypted on all of your devices at the same time.

Start a Facebook Secret Conversation

Once the feature is turned on you can easily start a Facebook Secret Conversation.

Select the New Message Icon

Back on the Facebook Messenger home screen, tap on the square and pencil icon in the upper right corner.

Select Secret

From the next screen, select Secret in the upper right corner.

Type their name in the Search Bar

Next, use the Search Bar to type in the name of the user you’d like to start a Facebook Secret Conversation with.

Set the timer

Ones of the ways Facebook Secret Conversations differs from Snapchat is that you’re able to set a timer for when you’d like messages to expire. To do so, tap the clock icon where you would type your message.

Choose how long you’d like your messages to appear within the Secret Conversation. When their time is up, these messages will no longer be shown within the conversation.

How to Use the Secret Conversation Feature in Messenger

  • You can make a "secret conversation" in Messenger by starting a new conversation and tapping the icon in the top-right corner.
  • Messenger's secret conversations are encrypted, meaning that your messages are incredibly private — not even Facebook can read them.
  • Secret conversations are only available in the Messenger mobile app, not the website.

In the past few years, encrypted messaging apps have become increasingly popular. Signal, Telegram — and now Messenger.

Despite being run by a company not known for its data security, Messenger's "secret conversation" feature is a legitimately safe way to chat with friends and colleagues. Secret conversations are protected with end-to-end encryption, meaning that no one outside the chat can read what's inside.

It's similar to Vanish Mode, another Messenger feature that prioritizes secret and secure conversations.

If you care about privacy and want to use Messenger, secret conversations should be your go-to tool. Here's how to start a secret conversation and customize its settings.

How to make a secret conversation in Messenger

Secret conversations are exclusive to the iPhone, iPad, and Android Messenger apps. You won't find them in the Messenger desktop app or website.

1. Open the Messenger app and tap the compose message icon in the top-right corner.

2. A list of all your contacts will appear. Here, tap the button in the top-right corner — on an iPhone or iPad it'll say Secret, while on an Android it'll be a switch with a padlock icon.

3. Tap the person who you want to have a secret conversation with. It has to be a one-on-one chat — you can't have a secret group chat.

4. You'll be brought into a secret conversation with the person you chose. Once you send a message, it'll appear on their device.

If you're Facebook friends with the person on the other end of the chat, you can enable disappearing messages as well. These let you put a timer on every message sent, so they'll delete themselves after a short period of time.

1. At the top of the secret conversation, tap the other chatter's name (iPhone or iPad) or the "i" icon (Android) to open the options menu.

2. Tap Disappearing Messages, and then choose how long you want messages to last.

Additionally, you can report the person you're chatting with, block them, or just delete the chat. To do so, open the options menu again and tap Something's Wrong, Block, or Delete Chat respectively.

Cover and avatar

  • Static cover

Another point worth paying attention to is the quality of the cover. As you can see, there is no blur in the picture above. To achieve this result, you need to create an image of at least 820 by 312 pixels in PNG format. We recommend using images b and in a larger size (for example, 1702 by 630 pixels) so that when opened on monitors with a higher resolution, the images are large and look good.

Once you've set your group's cover, be sure to check out how it looks on a mobile device. Anything larger than 640 by 360 pixels will be clipped.

  • Static avatar

The size of the avatar must be at least 170 x 170 pixels (128 x 128 for smartphones). As in the previous example, you can upload a larger image so that it is larger and of better quality when opened.

  • Animated cover or video blog

Animated covers on Facebook can currently only be created on business pages. This feature is not yet available on the personal page.

The video must be between 20 and 90 seconds long and at least 1250 x 312 pixels in size. The recommended size is 820 x 462 pixels. It is best to use video with a resolution of 1250 x 463 pixels and an aspect ratio of 2.7.

You can change the size of the finished video using the online editor. For example, Resize-Video.

To make an animated cover, go to the company profile, click on "Edit" and then "Select video". The video must be uploaded to the library on the page in advance.

Facebook is the most popular social network in the world, and the messaging app Facebook Messenger is also very popular among users. Almost everyone who uses Facebook uses Messenger to communicate with friends. 1. Blocking messages from a business account

If you previously interacted with a business page on Facebook Messenger, and now you are receiving promotional messages that annoy you, then there are solutions for this case.

10. Audio / video calls or sending a voice message

If the people you want to add to the group are not in the list of suggested contacts, you can find them in the search box above. You can even add people to your group who are not among your Facebook friends.

After creating a group, you can proceed to the group setting, from which you can change the color theme of the group, assign aliases to members, change the name of the group, and make other settings.

12. Disable group notifications

Facebook Messenger group conversations are very useful for communicating and coordinating with a group of friends at the same time. However, when group members start sharing messages that have nothing to do with you, then you don't see a choice but to turn off notifications. To disable group notifications:

On the Chat tab, swipe left on a group conversation.

Click on the bell icon and choose how long you want this group chat to be disabled.

You will see a menu window with different time intervals - from 15 minutes to 24 hours and even a 'until turn it on again' turn in which you can disable notifications.

If you don't want to just turn off notifications but not receive them at all, there is an option in the group settings to ignore messages.

After enabling this option, the group will be moved to the list of filtered messages and you will not receive any notifications. In addition, none of your group members will know that you have ignored group messages.

Note . The notification mute feature is not available on the Messenger mobile app.

13. Creating stories

You can use Facebook Messenger to create and share a story with your friends. Like Instagram and Snapchat, you can share a photo or video that your friends can view and it lasts for 24 hours. To create history :

Go to the "History" button in the upper left corner and click on the plus (+).

It will go to your photo album where you can select photos or videos or access your camera to take it right away.

You can publish your story to all the people in your Facebook contacts or send it to selected people as a message. Just select the contacts you want to share your story with and click send.

Note . This option is only available in the Messenger mobile app.

14. View history anonymously

If you want to see your friends' history on Facebook Messenger anonymously, then this feature is for you. In the Messenger app, click "People" at the bottom, and then click "Stories" in the top right corner of . Here you will see all the stories your friends have shared in the last 24 hours. Even though the story will be shown as a thumbnail, it's still big enough for anyone to figure out what it's about.

However, one of the downsides of this trick is that you can't see all the stories your friends have shared, and only the most recent one will be visible to you.

15. Adding Aliases

Facebook Messenger allows you to change any of your contact names and give them a nickname of your choice. Here's how to do it:
