Private vs. Public Instagram Account: Differences

Beyond the obvious differences lying in restricting access to the content shared in the account, there are also other things you should know:

  • You can't make your Business or Creator Instagram accounts private; this works only personal profiles.
  • Public Instagram accounts have Instagram Insights (analytics).
  • Public accounts allow you to switch between the Business and Creator accounts.
  • Public accounts can advertise on Instagram and promote their posts to get more followers.

Public accounts are confidential since only you can control who follows you and sees your content.

How to Set an Instagram Account Private

To make your Instagram account private, head over to Settings > Privacy > Private account > On.

Note that if you have a Business or Creator account on Instagram, you won't be able to make your account private! You'll need to switch back to the Personal account first and only then perform the actions above.

What happens if you use hashtags or location tags in a private account?

If your account is private and you use hashtags under your posts, only your followers will find your content when searching for these hashtags. The same goes for geotags and Reels – only your approved followers can share and see them.

There are multiple reasons why users restrict access to their accounts. Here are some of them.

Back in 2018 to 2020, there was a trend when big meme accounts and influencers made their profiles private, and their followership grew despite that. For this reason, it is now believed that making an Instagram private can help you boost your followership.

This is how it works: users send posts of such accounts to each other in DM and follow the accounts to see the content. Then just forget to unfollow it if the content is no longer interesting.

2. Protect their content.

When your account is private, only those people whom you manually approved as followers can see your content. And even if your followers share your content with someone outside your followers' list, they won't have access to your posts, Reels, or stories.

3. Keep their existing followers.

According to some stats, private accounts have lower unfollow rates than public profiles. One of the reasons was the popup window (which is already gone, though) that users saw when trying to unfollow a private account, asking if they were certain about unfollowing. This motivated people to stay.

4. Don't want to get reported.

Competitors or haters can sometimes be bothering: they report an account or content posted in the profile to make Instagram block the account. To avoid this, influencers, meme accounts, and brands make their accounts private to control the follow requests.

Will I Get More Instagram Followers If I Set My Account Private?

Let's focus on the first reason why users might possibly turn their accounts private. Many believe that if the profile isn't open to everyone, this will increase its followership. Is that actually so?

Indeed, when the account is public, it might seem that there's no need to follow it since the content is already available. When users see an ad or a post shared in their DM that leads to a private account, they follow this account because they don't get what they've come for.

Yet, even this intriguing feeling of exclusivity and inaccessibility won't help if the content stops being appealing and is no longer what users followed you for. This is why after people follow such private accounts and look through their content, they eventually unfollow them if the Instagram content isn't what they were looking for.

To sum up, this strategy of making your account private may work short-term. For instance, after collaborating with another big account that leads traffic back to yours. But in the long term, you'll lose lots of potential followers who will never discover your profile organically.

Should I Turn My Account Private to Attract More Followers on Instagram?

The reasons we've talked about above are definitely big pros of why people might wnat to have their account closed from intruders.

When your account is public, your content appears on the Explore page and search results by hashtags and location tags. Besides, not everyone is ready to follow an unknown account even after their friends share a post in DMs. To some, it seems annoying.

One of the biggest (and strangest) Instagram trends to emerge this summer is that large Instagram meme accounts are making their profiles private.

The Instagram accounts, like @moistbuddha and @commentawards, have millions of followers. So why are they choosing to hide their content from the world (and potential followers)?

In the following post, we look at why more Instagram accounts are going private, if it actually works to get you more followers, and whether or not it’s a good strategy for your business:

Why Some Instagram Accounts are Going Private

If you or any of your close friends on Instagram like sharing funny memes (who doesn’t?), then you’ve probably run into something like to the following scenario: a friend DMs you a so-called “hilarious meme,” but when you open your inbox to view it, all you find is a messaging saying “Photo Unavailable.

Sound about right? Well, you’re not alone.

Starting in early 2018, Instagram meme accounts have, en masse, started taking their accounts private and forcing non-followers to request access before they can view their posts.

The situation has become so widespread, in fact, that hundreds of people have taken to Twitter to rally against it, tweeting things like “It should be illegal for Instagram meme accounts to be private” and “Basic Instagram manners: don’t send memes from private accounts.”

This isn’t the first time we have seen Instagram accounts go private. Everlane, a direct-to-consumer fashion brand that is popular on Instagram, is known for pulling off different strategies to promote new collections, like taking their account private or archiving all of their Instagram posts.

So in a world where your Instagram aesthetic and feed is everything, why go private?  Here are a few reasons why some accounts are using this strategy:

#1: Make Your Instagram Private to Get More Followers

This is the big one and definitely the most important. According to several large meme accounts, the main reason they went private is because it helps them attract new followers.

The idea here is that by taking your account private, when one of your followers sends a post to their friend, that person has to follow you in order to see it.

On the other hand, if your account is public, that friend could simply view the post in their DMs and then move on without following you.

There’s also a mystery factor. Going private on Instagram is a bit like putting a red velvet rope in front of your account — it tugs at people’s curiosity.

If someone lands on your profile and sees that you’re private but you have millions of followers, there’s a strong chance they’ll hit the follow button — I mean, there has to be a reason why you have so many followers, right?

And the strategy works! According to The Atlantic’s interview with Reid Hailey, the founder of Doing Things (aka @drunkpeopledoingthings), before making one of his accounts private, it was “growing at an average of 10,000 new followers per week. Once it flipped to private, that number jumped to 100,000.”

That’s 10x the follower growth, just by doing one small Instagram hack!

Other big memers like Elliot Tebele, the founder of @fuckjerry, have corroborated Hailey’s claim. “I’ve tested it once or twice to see and it does work,” Tebele also said in an interview with The Atlantic.

#2: Going Private on Instagram to Help with Follower Retention

A second (and similar) reason why a large account on Instagram would go private is because it helps keep their followers from hitting the unfollow button.

Unfollowing a public Instagram account is easy, but as Taylor Lorenz of The Atlantic’s notes, “when a user goes to unfollow a private account, a pop-up appears asking them if they really want to take that step and reminding them that they’ll have to re-request if they want access again. Many people find it easier to just keep following.”

#3: Protecting Your Content by Taking Your Instagram Private

Another reason large accounts go private on Instagram is because it adds a layer of protection to their content — which is especially important today with new meme accounts popping up left, right, and center.

The thinking goes that by making your account private, you get an added level of control over who can see and interact your content.

It’s hard to say how effective this strategy is for preventing other accounts from stealing your content, but going private certainly does give you more control over your account.

Also, if you have a private Instagram account and you block a user, they won’t be able to interact with your account at all (as opposed to a public Instagram account which is still accessible from the web and other places).

#4: Going Private to Protect Yourself from Being Reported

With Instagram getting more serious about banning accounts that break their terms of service, some larger meme accounts have gone private simply to protect themselves from being reported.

This is more often the case for accounts that post (questionably) offensive content. Basically, the idea is that by going private, these meme accounts can avoid being reported (and possibly banned) by people who find their content indecent or offensive.

Should You Take Your Own Instagram Account Private?

So, should you make your Instagram account private? Here’s where things get complicated. While all the above points are valid to an extent, the reason why going private works for large meme accounts is because… well, they’re large!

Accounts like @shitheadsteve and @commentawards can afford to go private because they already have millions of followers. They don’t need to implement the normal Instagram growth strategies that most accounts use. All they have to do is post great content and they’ll keep growing.

In other words, they’re too big to fail.

But it also has to do with the type of content they post. Meme accounts create content that’s meant to be extremely shareable. That’s how they grow: by enticing their followers to share their posts with other users.

Other growth strategies come second to this. Nothing is as effective at driving growth for meme accounts as getting their posts shared by DM — not even the Explore Page!

According to an interview with Sonny from @sonny5ideup, “When you run a private account, you don’t get in the Explore Page anymore, but I’ve noticed it doesn’t matter. ” Whereas his public accounts get around 200 new followers each day, his private accounts can get as many as 10,000 new followers in a day.

As unlikely as it sounds, going private works for meme accounts. But the same strategy probably won’t work for regular Instagram users — brands and businesses included. As Sonny said, when you take your account private on Instagram, your posts no longer appear on the Explore Page. And they also won’t appear under any of the hashtags you use.

In other words, by taking your account private, you basically abandon any other form of audience discovery on the platform.

This is obviously problematic for most accounts. Unless you’re huge already, you’re much more likely to get new followers through the hashtags you use, your Instagram Stories, the communities you associate and engage with, and, of course, getting on the Explore Page.

While going private might attract a few more curious followers, that number would be offset by the new followers you would lose by not being able to execute on those other growth strategies. That’s the opportunity cost.

The Winner? Keeping Your Instagram Account Public!

So what’s the final say? Well, the fact is that while going private may be effective for large meme accounts, it’s very likely a detrimental strategy for most accounts.

Outside of very specific circumstances (like the ones we outlined above), it’s probably best for you to keep your account public and focus on other ways to attract new followers!

Another friend, @TravelingCoachKim, had about 180 followers, I took over her account and increased it to 2000 in two weeks.

I could share countless other success stories, but you need to know that these tips to grow your Instagram followers work!

Disclaimer, these methods are not for everyone. Some people will completely disagree with me, and that's okay. Choose what suits you and do it well.

Before we start, let's make a couple of notes.

Make sure your profile is complete and you have a profile picture. Not having a profile picture is like being a smartass on Twitter. The picture is required! Also, don't forget to add your blog link and email address to your profile so people can easily find and email you.

Once your profile looks good, you're ready to start building Instagram followers.

1. DAILY MAIL

Post one to three images each day and be sure to post them more than 2 hours apart. I know I know. You have a lot of photos to share, but manage them and stay strategically focused with a maximum of three images per day. Study after study has been done on the subject, and rumor has it that one to three is the ideal number of upgrades.

2. POST ONLY THE BEST IMAGES

Yes, you have 500 photos of little Johnny playing or 300 different angles of the same flower that you are sure the world needs to see. Here's what to think of Instagram as your art gallery. You only want to showcase the best of the best of the best in your IG feed. Let IG be your portfolio of your top notch work. The best advice a photographer has ever given me is that I am only as good as my worst shot. Best. advice. Ever.

In addition, ask yourself why. WHY will the photo be of interest to your followers/viewers? Will it inspire? Will he share useful advice? Will it get someone to buy a product, visit a destination, etc.? If you can't definitively answer the question why, DO NOT post the image. This is truly one of the best tips on how to get more followers on Instagram. Self-editing is very important.

3. USE HASHTAGS

Many images are on Instagram by hashtags, so you should make sure you use them to get more followers on Instagram. Put two to three hashtags in content about your image and then copy/paste 20-25 hashtags in the first comment.

If you're a blogger building your Instagram followers because you want to use your account to work with brands, check out the hashtags you've included in your image. If your image falls into the Featured Posts category, take a screenshot and add it to your media kit. On a recent trip, I posted four images on the #VisitArkansas "Top Posts" hashtag page. Not too shabby.

I add hashtags to a notepad on my smartphone and then just copy/paste the hashtags into the first comment. I categorize hashtags so I can easily find information about travel, food, the Midwest, etc.

A few more words about hashtags if you're building a brand. Consider creating a hashtag just for your brand and include it in the content of every single image.

4. STRONGLY FOLLOW

This is where people usually disagree with me, but this is my main way to get more followers on Instagram. You have to aggressively follow people every day. You can subscribe to a maximum of 80 people per hour. Do this a couple of times a day to follow about 200 people every day.

To find the people you follow, go to the accounts you follow or like and follow their followers or the people they follow. Look for people who have the same interests and photos as you. You will have more success after followers if your images are in the same niche as the account the person is already following.

For example, I post mostly travel images, so I will find travel instagrammers and follow their followers. Their followers already like travel images, so you can bet they will like my images too. I'm probably not going to follow someone's followers who only post pictures of trucks. People who like truck pictures probably won't like my travel photos. It makes sense?

Find your niche and follow this audience.

If you're into the travel niche, here are some great Instagrammers. Go to their followers or followers list and follow them.

Note… 1082 likes and 38 comments during the day, THIS is a good interaction. (Bob has 11.6k followers which gives him a 10%+ engagement rate which is fantastic!)

5. ENGAGEMENT

I will talk about it endlessly. If you don't have engagement, your account is meaningless from a brand standpoint. I run across so many accounts that have 50-100+ followers and end up with 30 likes per image and no comments. If people don't interact with you, there's a serious disconnect. If you're not using your account to build a brand, this tip is probably not important, but if your ultimate goal is to make money, view items, or take trips, you need to pay attention to this one.

Go to Instagram five or six times a day for 5-10 minutes. View your Instagram feed and like the last 30 minutes or an hour of photos. In general, do what you can in five minutes. There really is no hard and fast rule. I want it to be simple enough that you feel like you can get the job done and that building Instagram followers doesn't take up all of your time.

As long as you like the photos, stop and comment on the images you really like. Something as simple as "beautiful images" or "what did you enjoy doing at XYZ?" can help draw attention to your own page, and you can also just find a couple of like-minded people.

My understanding is that the industry standard for engagement rates is around 3%. For every image you post, you will need to work towards getting 3% of your followers to like or comment.

While you're working on engagement, this is a really good time to take out who you're following. I automatically unfollow anyone who sells body wraps, oils, or any other annoying product on Instagram. Too many photos in a row? I'm unsubscribing from you. Bad photo? Gone. Basically, I want my Instagram feed to be filled with beautiful, inspiring images and everything else to disappear. Of course, things will be different for you. I don't want you to feel bad about unfollowing someone. This is your account, do what you want.

6. HASHTAG SEARCH

Look for the same hashtags you use in your images. When the hashtag pages open, click the first image in the latest posts and scroll through the stream by tagging the images you like, leaving comments, and following people. You don't have to like every image you see. I tend to skip selfies, but cute images get likes, great images get comments, and both are usually followed. This is a great way to find people outside of your immediate circle on Instagram.

7. USE CROWDFIRE

Crowdfire is a free app that helps with the aggressively unsubscribing part of my technique. Download it to your phone and/or computer and link to your Instagram account.

Three or four days after you start using the tips above, sign in and sync your account. Full download may take up to 5 minutes. Once that happens, scroll to the very bottom of the list and start unfollowing people who don't follow you.

If there is someone you still want to follow even if they don't follow you, just click on their name and whitelist them. Whitelisting them will keep them out of the unsubscribe list.

This is important because Instagram limits you to 7500 followers. You want to follow people who will be interested in your images, like and comment on them.

BONUS

This is not related to how to get more followers on instagram , but very interesting for people who manage multiple accounts. Instagram just introduced a new feature that allows you to sign in to multiple accounts at the same time. This is fantastic news for those of us who manage other accounts. No more signing out of one account and signing in to another, we can simply switch between accounts. Maybe there was some kind of celebration going on in my house when it happened! Look for the feature at the bottom of the settings screen where it says "Add account". Add up to three accounts.

Closed accounts on Instagram - why are they needed and how do they work

“Should I close my profile before advertising?”, “Why do bloggers close accounts?” and “How can I see the content and followers of closed accounts?” - these and many other similar questions constantly come across to me in thematic communities, so I decided to look into the topic.

Private Instagram profiles*

In the Instagram app* regular accounts can be made private and no one except the owner and followers of the profile will see its content, followers and subscriptions. Business accounts and authors' accounts cannot become closed, for this they need to remove the "business", lose statistics and the ability to advertise.

Why do people close accounts? This is usually done by entertainment public administrators, bloggers and ordinary Instagram users*. I will analyze the reasons for bloggers and administrators.

More followers

According to administrators and ad managers, in closed accounts, the follower dynamics graph behaves better, more followers and fewer unsubscribes for the same efforts. If we compare an open account and a closed one, then with the same quality of content and advertising budgets, the audience grows better on closed ones. Let's figure out why.

Intrigue

Arousing curiosity in order to get something is an old publicity stunt. Even in folk tales, witches attracted children by arousing curiosity. Unknown content in any account causes a desire to find out “what’s there”, and if the account intersects with the interests of the user, then the desire to find out is irresistible and the finger reaches for the “Subscribe” button.

They say it works well with entertainment publics and urban ones. Can you imagine if it's a combo? A resident of Khabarovsk is sitting. And then his friend in direct sends a message with a repost from a closed account: "Look what happens!" No? Disorder! I'll subscribe!"

Problems with closed accounts

Only personal accounts can be closed. Such accounts do not have statistics. They won't set the target from the app. The advertiser has to be content with indirect metrics - subscribers, the average number of viewed Stories, the number of comments and likes per post.

The administrators of such accounts have another problem - in addition to the usual duties, you need to constantly approve subscriptions.
