Hiding and limiting comments via Instagram is a bit of a tricky procedure which we’ll talk about at the end of this article. Anyhow, thanks to our Social Inbox, we have a quick and straightforward solution.

The Auto-moderation feature works like this:
You create “rules” that can automatically hide, delete or reply to Instagram comments (and DMs!) based on keywords you define.
You can create as many different rules as you like for various purposes. There’s also no limit to the number of keywords and phrases that you can put in there.
Below you can see a quick video tutorial on how to automatically hide inappropriate comments on Instagram:
Creating an Auto-moderation rule takes about a minute or two, and the feature works for organic posts and Instagram ads, too. Here’s how you can set up a rule:
- Name your rule
- Choose the Instagram account (or multiple accounts at once) you want it to work for
- Choose the message type, e. g., organic comments
- Write your keywords
- Choose how you want your rule to react to these keywords (e.g., hide or delete)
- You can select specific times during which you want the rule to be active, or you leave the box empty and let the rule work 24/7
- Type in your email address (you can add multiple) so that you and the rest of your team can get notifications each time a rule is triggered.
You can also use ready-to-go rule templates to make things even easier 😉

Setting up an Auto-moderation rule that will automatically delete comments on Instagram is done in almost the exact same way as shown above in the video. The only difference is that you need to select “Delete” as the rule’s automatic action.
By the time you’re done reading this part of the article, I assume you’ve found what you came here for, i.e., how to hide Instagram comments. However, if you wonder what similar actions you can do using only the Instagram app, keep reading to gain some more insights.

How to hide comments using the Instagram app
As mentioned before, you can’t easily hide specific comments on Instagram. But there are some other ways to protect your account from unwanted comments using the Instagram app.
If you go to your profile and tap on the three lines in the upper right corner, go to Settings -> Privacy -> Comments, you’ll access Comment Controls, where you can basically limit or filter out the incoming comments.
Comment filters on InstagramFirst of all, on Instagram, you can allow comments from:
- Everyone
- People you follow and your followers
- People you follow
- Your followers
You can also turn off comments on Instagram from specific people. When those filters are on, your comment section will have a pretty big caption that says “Comments on this post have been limited”.
Limited comments on an Instagram postThis may come off as a little off-putting to your potential customers, as it’s publicly known that not everyone has the right to comment on your Instagram posts.
There are two more kinds of filters. The first one (“hide offensive comments”) will automatically hide comments that Instagram deems inappropriate. That works for posts, Stories, and live videos.
Another filter (“manual filter”) works like a simpler version of our Auto-moderation feature. You can define keywords, and Instagram will hide comments that contain those words or phrases.
When you turn on the manual filter, you’ll also be able to filter most reported words, i.e., hide comments that contain words or phrases that are most commonly reported on your posts and Stories.
Comment filters on InstagramWhat does it mean to restrict someone on Instagram?
In October 2019, Instagram introduced the “Restrict” feature to target abuse and bullying. It’s like a softer version of blocking someone.
When you restrict someone on Instagram:
- Their comments under your posts will only be visible to them and to you, not anyone else.
- Their messages will be moved to your message requests.
- They won’t be able to see whether you’re online and if you’ve read their messages.
- They won’t know that you’ve restricted them.
- You won’t get notified about any of their future comments under your posts.
To restrict someone on Instagram:
- Open Instagram and go to the profile you’d like to restrict
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner
- Click on “Restrict”
How to completely turn off comments on Instagram
You can also completely disable comments on Instagram. Turning off comments completely is a feature that is not often used, but nevertheless, it is possible.
To completely turn off comments on Instagram:
- Go to your specific post
- Tap the three dots in the upper right corner
- Select “turn off commenting”
So, if you’d like to completely turn off commenting on your whole Instagram account, you need to turn off comments for each post individually…or…you can do that with NapoleonCat.
How to hide all comments on Instagram
Using NapoleonCat, you can hide or delete any incoming comments on your organic Instagram posts – all done automatically.
It’s a simple, 15-second job to set up the automatic reaction.
To hide any incoming Instagram comments, click on Auto-moderation in the menu on the left:
- When you open Auto-moderation, click on Create new rule.
- Name your rule, choose the Instagram account(s) for the rule to work on.
- Select Organic comment as the trigger.
- Choose Hide as the automatic reaction.
- Schedule your rule to work 24/7.
- Click on Save & run, and that’s it!
The key here is to not include any keywords. This way, any incoming comments will be automatically hidden from your IG account.

Conclusion
That’s it for today, folks! Now you know how to easily hide any comment on Instagram with one simple click.
Remember not to overuse features such as hiding and deleting comments on social media. As a brand, try to view constructive criticism as a great source of free feedback, appreciate it, and address it. As for trolls, spam, and hate speech – those you can keep out of your socials.
Until next time, take care!

How To Hide Instagram Comments From A User Without Them Knowing
Life
by Syeda Khaula Saad
Cyberbullying can be extremely difficult to catch, especially on apps with millions of users. In a recent effort to make people feel safer online, Instagram will test a new app feature called Restrict that'll let users hide unwanted comments from a person without them actually finding out. If you've ever felt threatened online and want to know how to hide Instagram comments from cyberbullies without them knowing, this update could be a huge help.
"We wanted to create a feature that allows people to control their Instagram experience, without notifying someone who may be targeting them," Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, wrote in a press release on Monday. By using Restrict to delete comments and read messages from their cyberbullies undetected, people can avoid escalating the situation, the press release explained. In lots of cases, according to the press release, young people are hesitant to take any action that could make a cyberbully retaliate, and that's particularly true, for example, if they see that bully in school each day.
If you're interested in putting Instagram's new Restrict feature to work once it rolls out, there are a few easy steps you can take. And if you're dealing with a cyberbully, they'll be none the wiser once the comments are hidden. However, since Restrict is a test for now, it's possible not all users will have access to the feature right away.
1
Hold Down The Comment & Press "Restrict"
Courtesy of Instagram
In the same way that you would prepare to report a comment, hold down on it and wait for this screen to pop up. Once it does, press "Restrict..." following the name of the account that left the comment.
2
Verify That You Want To Restrict The Account
Courtesy of Instagram
Once you've selected that you want to restrict the account, you should see a pop-up that asks, "Are you having a problem" with the name of the account. This pop-up alerts you that restricting the account will protect you from unwanted interactions without them knowing. Additionally it lets you know that the person won't be able to see when you're online or when you read any of their direct messages.
3
Press "Okay" To Restrict The Account & Hide The Comment
Courtesy of Instagram
After this, you should be alerted that "You Restricted..." the account. It will alert you that only you and the account you've restricted will be able to see any new comments on your posts and that following the restriction, you have the option of approving individual comments to make them visible to others. Then it will give you the option to "Delete Comment," "Unrestrict," or press "Okay. " Pressing "Okay" will tell Instagram you've acknowledged what restricting the account means and will go ahead and complete the action.
4
Double Check They've Been Restricted
Courtesy of Instagram
If you're unsure whether you followed the steps correctly or ever want to "Unrestrict" the account, you can go to your settings and press "Privacy." You can find "Restricted Accounts" right above "Blocked Accounts" and press it to view a list of the accounts you've restricted. Once you click on "Restricted Accounts" and see the account's name on the list, you'll know you've successfully restricted the account.
While this update may not be the end of cyberbullying, it is definitely a step toward making people on Instagram feel safer. And if you ever feel unsafe about how someone's speaking to you or about you on the social media platform, you should tell someone immediately and report the comments to Instagram.

How to hide comments on Instagram under a post
If you do not clean up the comments on your Instagram posts from time to time, they will turn into a warehouse of advertising, spam and hate. The more popular the account, the more obvious this problem is.
However, you should remember that you should not turn off comments just like that, because this is an activity that affects the promotion of your account. Comments should be removed if a lot of advertising messages, inaccurate information, flooding are published under the post, or if you have published a post of a personal nature and do not want to see comments from strangers under it. And also if you have a personal account and you do not need to promote it. In the article, we also described in detail in which cases it is worth getting rid of comments. You can delete them manually, set up filters, or close comments completely. In the article we will tell you how to do it.

There are several ways to disable comments under a post: completely on the account (but there are nuances), under a published or new post, close comments for individual users or groups of users.
How to hide comments under a specific published post
Open the desired post on your Instagram page. Click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner above the publication and in the drop-down menu, click on the "Turn off comments" item. Accordingly, in order to turn them back on, you need to do all the same steps, only there will already be “Enable comments”.
How to disable comments under a new post at the time of publication
This is done at the time of creation of the publication.
Step 1 . Uploading an image for a post. Click on the plus on the main page of the account, select a post from the gallery, then click on the arrow in the upper right corner for further settings.
Step 2 . Editing the visual.
Step 3 . Go to the publishing settings, where you can leave a caption for the photo, mark people and place. We are interested in the item "Advanced settings", it is located at the very bottom - open it.
Step 4 . Opposite the “Turn off comments” item, move the slider to the on position (it will be blue).

How to hide comments completely
Instagram used to have the ability to disable comments immediately below all posts, but in 2021 this no longer works. Now you can turn off comments from groups - subscribers or those you follow. How to do it:
Step 1 . We go into the account settings - menu (3 horizontal stripes), then go down to the settings (gear icon).
Step 2 . We find the item "Privacy".
Step 3 . In the "Interactions" section, click on "Comments". By default, comments are open to everyone.
Step 4 . We are interested in the topmost item - "Allow comments from", click on it.
Step 5 . Choose who to allow to write under your posts:
- everyone;
- to your followers and those you follow;
- only to those you follow;
- only to your subscribers.
P.S. Before disabling comments from subscribers, consider how appropriate it is - comments, like any activity on Instagram, affect the promotion of content, and if this is a company account, then subscribers may be unhappy with the lack of feedback. The alternative is to block comments from specific users or disable comments under certain posts.
The second way to completely hide comments is to turn them off one by one under each post, as described in the first two paragraphs. But, if you have several tens or hundreds of posts published, it will take a long time.
How to block comments of specific users
In the same section "Interactions - Comments" we find the item "Block comments from" - open and in the search we find the accounts of these people. The section will indicate the total number of blocked. Blocked users will be able to continue to write comments, but they will no longer be seen by anyone except themselves.
Another way to block comments from specific users is to give them restricted access.
Step 1 . We return to the privacy settings and in the "Contacts" section we find the item "Accounts with restricted access".
Step 2 . Select accounts from the search.
In this case, comments from such users will be seen only by you and them. In addition to restrictions on comments, a restriction is also imposed on Direct - dialogues with these accounts will fall into correspondence requests, they will not be able to see whether you have read their messages or not, they will not be able to see your status and activity on Instagram.
P.S. Another way to restrict an account's access to your comments and Direct is to go to its page, click 3 dots, and select "Restrict access".
How to set up filters for comments
Auto filters.
Instagram has automatic filters that remove offensive comments and spam, but they are not enough. If you accidentally turned them off and want to return them or are just wondering where they are, go to the privacy settings (Settings - Privacy - Comments). The slider next to "Hide offensive comments" should be in the on position.
Manual filter.
In addition to the autofilter, you can enable a manual filter by words and phrases. Works not only for posts, but also for stories, Reels and live broadcasts.
Step 1. In the same section of comment settings, enable the "Manual filter". A field opens where you need to write words separated by commas.
Step 2. Additionally, you can set up a filter for the words that are most often complained about (works automatically).
P.S. Custom keywords and phrases do not work for languages that do not have spaces, such as Japanese and Chinese.
Why remove comments
As we wrote above, comments should not be removed just like that, because activity under posts helps to promote your account through the algorithms of Instagram itself. But there are times when it's really worth it. For example:
- offensive comments, bullying, hate under posts is a common situation on the pages of stars and popular bloggers. However, if this is a company account, and you are not dealing with a hate, but with justified criticism, closing comments will only exacerbate the problem - in this case, it is better to properly close the objections of a disgruntled client. By the way, hate happens not only towards the author of the page, but also towards his subscribers, and here you need to take action;
- many posts not related to the case — when the post became like someone else's chat, where they communicate not on the topic of the post. But here is a moot point, whether it is worth turning off comments or not - if, after an innocent communication, frank poaching of subscribers to competitors begins, then you can;
- spam (advertising your profiles, services, etc.) - everything is clear here. Although if you are sure that you are superior to your competitors and advertising under posts will not deprive you of your target audience, you don’t have to bother;
- when it is better to close comments for ethical reasons — for example, a post about a tragedy or about a person with disabilities, about some social problem or a post about politics — in these cases, inadequate people often come to the comments and go beyond the limits of decency ( up to mockery of the victims of accidents). For such topics, it is better to turn off comments at the stage of posting (that is, immediately).
- online harassment and harassment — girls face this problem more often, but men too. Do not underestimate online harassment, sometimes they turn into very real threats.
- disinformation - for example, trolls have joined on the order of a competitor and started writing lies about you that can ruin your reputation. You can remove comments before they lead to resonance and you have to justify yourself publicly;
- when there are too many inappropriate comments to hide them manually, and the filters can't cope;
- a personal post — for example, the post is about family, and you don't want to see comments from strangers under it;
- you have a personal account - on which friends, relatives, colleagues are subscribers. You do not need promotion and involvement of strangers, so you do not depend on the activity under the posts, which means that they can be turned off.
Conclusion
Account owners decide how to put things in order in the comments - someone closes them and blocks violators, someone does not pay attention to the garbage under the posts at all.
