How to back up instagram

How to delete your Instagram account (and back up your photos)

Getting rid of social networks is somewhat trendy now — ironically, sometimes it’s trending on social networks, as with #DeleteFacebook. Instagram is no exception. People may have very different reasons to delete their accounts, but the general idea of leaving the second biggest social network is quite popular nowadays.

Perhaps, speaking of irony, you found this post on social media as well.

My reason for dumping Instagram is a popular one: Scrolling through a feed of pictures of other people’s tasty food and beautiful vacation spots makes my life seem depressingly drab by comparison. After 5 minutes on Instagram, I feel like my life is boring (it’s not), so I have decided to leave the social media platform.

In this post, I’ll explain how to back up your Instagram profile and then temporarily disable it or leave the social network for good, permanently deleting your profile.

How to back up your Instagram profile

On the one hand, Instagram is rather generous when it comes to backups, letting you download not only all of your photos, but also your other information: likes, comments, contacts, captions for your photos (including hashtags), searches, settings, and more.

On the other hand, everything but photos will be packed in JSON files (JavaScript Object Notation). You can still read (more like parse) them using some simple text editing software such as Notepad, WordPad, or TextEdit, but the format isn’t exactly handy.

Anyway, the main reason for requesting an Instagram backup is probably to get photos. Good news: You’ll get them in JPEG format, sorted in folders by date. Bad news: They’ll be low-resolution — 1080×1080. That’s how Instagram stores them, so there’s no reason to expect anything different, but you should be prepared.

How to back up your Instagram using Android or iOS app

To download a backup of your Instagram profile on a smartphone or a tablet, you need to do the following:

  • Open the Instagram app.
  • Tap your profile icon in the bottom right corner.
  • Tap the menu icon in the top right corner, then tap Settings, which is hidden in the bottom right corner of the menu.
  • Scroll down to Privacy and Security and select Data Download.
  • Accept the default or change the e-mail address for delivery.
  • Confirm the e-mail address and type in your Instagram password.
  • Wait up to 48 hours (more usually just a few minutes) for Instagram to e-mail you a link to download the archive with all of your data.
  • Click the link, log in to the Instagram website with your login and password, and click Download data to start downloading the ZIP archive with your photos and other profile information.
How to back up your Instagram using the Web interface

Getting your Instagram profile backup in a Web browser is somewhat easier, especially if you’re using a desktop or a laptop. Follow these steps:

  • Go to Instagram.com and log in.
  • Click your profile avatar in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Click Edit profile next to your name.
  • In the menu on the left, select Privacy and Security.
  • Scroll down and click Request Download under the Data Download subheading. Instagram will send you the e-mail with the link to the archive of your profile photos and other information.
  • The rest is the same as above: Open the e-mail and click the link.
  • Log in to the Instagram website.
  • Click Download data to start downloading the ZIP archive with your photos and other information from your profile.

Now that you’ve backed up your photos, you can delete your Instagram profile.

Instagram’s updated security and privacy settings

How to delete your Instagram profile

If you rummage through Instagram’s settings using the Web interface, the only option you’re going to find is to temporarily disable your account. However, if you know the secret link, you can delete your account permanently. Here we’ll cover both options. Note that Instagram doesn’t allow you to delete or temporarily disable your account in the mobile app — you’ll need to use your browser and the Web interface for that.

Temporarily disabling your Instagram account using the web interface
  • Open your browser and go to Instagram.com.
  • Click your profile avatar in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Click Edit profile, next to your name.
  • Scroll down to find the Temporarily disable my account link, and click it.
  • Select the reason you are disabling the account, enter your password, and click the Temporarily Disable Account button.
  • Click Yes. Your account is now disabled, which means that your profile, comments and likes will be hidden until or unless you re-enable your account.
Permanently deleting your Instagram account using the Web interface
  • Open your browser and go to https://www. instagram.com/accounts/remove/request/permanent/.
  • Select the reason you are disabling the account, enter your password, and click the big red button that reads Permanently delete my account.
  • Click OK.

That’s it, your account has been deleted. Note that in this case there is no way to restore your account. So, if you have any doubts, choose the safer option and disable the account temporarily.

How to re-enable your Instagram account

If you chose not to permanently delete, but only to temporarily disable your account, you can re-enable it simply by logging in using either the app or the Web interface at Instagram.com.

Unlike Twitter, Instagram does not permanently disable your account after it’s been temporarily disabled for a certain amount of time, so do not worry that it will vanish if you forget about it for a while. However — and also unlike Twitter — Instagram does not allow you to re-enable your account right after you have temporarily disabled it. According to Instagram, it takes several hours to disable an account, so after you’ve done it, you’ll need to wait those several hours before re-enabling it.

Instagram 101: How to Download a Backup of Your Account to Save Photos, Comments & More « Smartphones :: Gadget Hacks

  • Instagram 101

Facebook, parent company of Instagram, has allowed you to download photos and other account data for some time now, but the data request feature is also now available on Instagram to meet the GDPR data portability requirement in the EU — and it's available worldwide, not just in Europe.

This new feature in Instagram lets you not only view all of your data but download an entire backup of your Instagram account including comments, photos, liked pictures, and more. It's currently rolling out on Android and iOS, and if you don't see it yet, you can still do it right from your phone's web browser.

  • Don't Miss: How to Clear Your Search History on Instagram

Creating the backup takes up to 48 hours, and you may need to download it via a computer. Still, you can initiate everything entirely from your mobile device. Photos will be downloaded as JPGs, videos as MP4s, and the rest of the data will be in machine-readable JSON format which is best viewed in browsers such as Firefox.

Step 1: Request Your Instagram Data

The two ways you can view and/or download your data are either through the Instagram app directly or through your phone's web browser. While these methods are similar, there are a couple differences between the two.

Method 1: From the Instagram App

Go to your profile tab, and tap the cog icon (iOS) or the three-dot menu (Android) to view the Options page. If you just want to view your data online to see things like former usernames, hashtags you follow, blocked accounts, search history, etc., tap "Account Data" and "View All" next to the item you want to inspect.

To actually download your backup, select "Data Download" instead from the Options list, then tap the "Request Download" button that appears. On the next screen, enter the email address where you'd like to receive the backup (your account email should be automatically pre-filled) and hit "Next," then enter your account password and hit "Request Download" to complete the process.

Method 2: From Your Web Browser

Visit instagram.com in your mobile web browser, sign into your account, then tap the profile tab icon just like on the regular app. Next, tap the cog icon in the top left to view the Options page, then select "Privacy and Security. "

If you just want to view your data, hit "View Account Data" under the Account Data heading (you can also just visit instagram.com/accounts/access_tool to jump right there), then "View All" next to the item you want to inspect.

To download your data instead, select "Request Download" under the Data Download heading (you can also just visit instagram.com/download/request/ to jump right there), then enter the email address you want to send it to (your account email should be automatically pre-filled) and tap "Next." Enter your account password on the next page, then "Request Download" to finish up.

Step 2: Download Your Backup

Instagram will email you a backup within 48 hours with the subject line "Your Instagram Data," and a link to your backup will be provided inside that says "Download Data." Tapping that on your phone will redirect you to the Instagram app, which will redirect you back to your default web browser where you'll need to log into Instagram again. Once signed in, tap "Download Data" to do just that.

If you get an error on your phone saying "this page isn't available," you'll have to download the .zip file on your computer instead, which is probably a good place to store the backup anyway.

The link you're provided by Instagram will only work for four days total from the time you receive it, so if you forgot to download it, you'll have to go through the process of requesting it all over again.

How to backup Instagram

Nowadays, the applications we use are storing more and more of our content. . At first, this content was not very relevant, but our attachment to technology grew and its importance grew. From spontaneously browsing social networks or believing that it is something for the development of children professional activities or to save the memories that we used to print from the analog camera. Selling hard drives and space on our devices is highly valued, and Instagram knows it too. This is why creating a backup on Instagram has become just as important as on WhatsApp or other digital content networks.

This is why applications adapt to these changes. and offer services that will make your life easier. Phones now store full backups of your activity, but not app content. So, Whatsapp, Tik Tok or Instagram, enable the function of downloading a backup to your phone or computer .

Backup from Android

It's very easy to backup Instagram from Android. To do this, we must go to the application that we have downloaded and go to our profile. After that, we must click on the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner and click on "Your Activity". Once inside, click "Load Information".

Subscribe to our Youtube channel

In order to download all this information, Instagram will ask you for an email address. , which can be the same as the account or different if you like. This is necessary, as this is where your account information will be sent to you via a link. Once your preferred email has been written, we choose the format in which we want our data to be sent to us. This will be confirmed by entering our account password and we will have to wait for them to send us an email to download.

The format selection procedure is the same on any device you are using. Whether you're using Android, iOS, Windows, or Mac OS, there are only two formats: HTML and JSON. The former is best known as a programming language for websites. Anyone who has seen the code has seen labels like "". The second JSON (Javascript Object Notation) is a simple text format that we can use to exchange data. It is recommended to use HTML as it may be more familiar.

From a Windows or Mac computer

Downloading this file from a computer is easier and recommended . Using Instagram on computers was just visual at first, but now it's almost complete. And the fact is that some functions are more limited and less intuitive than in a smartphone. In order to download the backup, we can go to our preferred browser such as Firefox, Chrome or Safari and log in.

To facilitate the process, we will leave you a direct link so that you can proceed to the setup without taking further steps: browser backup. But if you want to know where this and other features are located, you need to go to the More tab > Your Activity. There we will have a menu where we can find:

  • interaction
  • Photo and video
  • account history
  • Download your information : click on this option

And just like the method we explained for Android, we do the same by putting in our email, setting up the HTML or JSON, and clicking next. We are waiting for an email to arrive and upload. In the test we did, it took us about an hour to arrive. It will be necessary to take into account the amount of content of each profile, given that it makes a copy of everything. Saved items, photo likes, direct messages, posts, etc. 14 days maximum as stated on the Instagram page itself.

What is downloaded to the folder

After unpacking the file, we see a folder with the name of your account followed by a numeric code representing the date you requested the download. If we log in, we will see several folders and several files that store the following:

  • Comments : All the comments that you have written on the social network or reported. And post, and drums.
  • Like : all the likes you gave on posts and comments.
  • Messages : Direct messages you have saved. Here you will find a thousand subfolders for each of your conversations
  • Favorites : Messages you have saved and collections you have.
  • Content : Here you will find all the content you have created. Download posts, videos or stories. You can also see your profile photo.
  • Contacts : Contacts that you have synced with your phone's contacts folder. This information is kept private while you can view phones.
  • Your Topics : The Instagram collection you used to recommend content while browsing your app.
  • Personal information : In this folder you can see all the information that Instagram collects when you create an account. Birthday, phone number, age, name…

These are the most important folders, but there are other types of folders. for example, the logos of the application itself or the use of bank cards if you purchased the service in the application.

Make a copy using the application

There are several external options around an application like instagram has nothing to do with the photography giant Meta. But if they perform functions that complement it. Some with more meaning, others with less.
