How to Delete Archived Chats in WhatsApp

As a popular chat app, WhatsApp has been on top of the market for quite some time now. Knowing your way around the app is pretty much essential. As simple as the app appears, however, it still hides certain features that you might not know about.

Here’s how to navigate smooth waters of WhatsApp and how to make the most out of it. Here are some essential WhatsApp tips and tricks that you should learn.

Archiving a Chat

If you’ve ever tried deleting a chat, you’ve noticed that the “delete” option doesn’t exist. Well, not in the conversation list screen. To archive a chat, go to the chats tab and either swipe left if you have an iOS device or hold the chat if you are an Android user. Then, select Archive. You’ll notice that this has removed the conversation from the list.

However, the deleted chat still exists. It’s in the Archived Chats section. To access this location on Android and iOS devices, it is located at the top of the list.

If you want to return the chat to the regular conversation list, select Unarchive. If you want to delete it/leave the conversation, hold the chat and select the Trash icon at the top and then Delete.

With group chats that you didn’t create but were a part of, you need to exit on the group first before you can delete the chat. To do this, hold the chat and tap the More option(three-dotted icon) at the top right then select Exit group. Once again, tap and hold the chat to select. You will notice that the delete option is now available. Select the Trash icon to permanently delete the chat.

Quoting

It’s easy to get lost inside a conversation, especially if we’re talking about a group chat. Instead of quoting and referring to a point in the chat, you can automatically “quote” the selected message. When a user taps this quote, it will take them to the exact location in the conversation.

To quote a message, swipe right or tap and hold the desired entry. Tap the left-facing arrow and type in your message. Then, tap the send arrow to the right.

Stop Media Auto-Download

WhatsApp comes with a smart option to automatically download every picture sent to you in your conversations. This neat feature, however, can turn into quite a nightmare, logistically. Also, it will take up space on your device, which is something that you’ll want to avoid. By default, this feature is on. Luckily, you can turn it off.

Go to Settings within the app and navigate to Storage and data. Then, you can select which files you want automatically downloaded and in under what conditions. That goes for Photo, Audio, Video, and Document files. With each of these, you can select whether you want them auto-downloaded while on Wi-Fi and Cellular data, while only on Wi-Fi, and Never.

You can also turn the auto-download on and off for individual chats. Just go to any conversation, select the chat name, navigate to Media visibility, and turn the feature on or off.

Add Someone to the Home Screen

If there is someone in your life who you talk to often via WhatsApp, you can speed things up by adding a quick-use shortcut on the Home screen. To do this, open the mentioned contact/group and either swipe left if you’re on iOS or tap and hold the chat if you’re on Android. Then, select More and then Add chat shortcut. The icon will appear on your device’s desktop.

Navigating WhatsApp

These useful tips will help you make the most out of your WhatsApp experience. They aren’t fancy and complicated, but they can help you navigate the popular chat app.

How to permanently hide WhatsApp chats!

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps. Since most of us use it as our chat app, it's no surprise that the term "WhatsApping" has become synonymous with chat itself. But the undesirable result of being able to text everyone on the same platform is a messy, cluttered chat screen.

While WhatsApp provides the ability to archive conversations until you need them again, it never hides chats forever. Once you receive a new message, the chat will be unzipped and returned to the top of the main chat screen.

Luckily, a recent update introduced a new "Archived Chats" option in the "Settings" menu, which allows you to save these chats in an archive whether new messages are received or not. Here's how you can archive unwanted chats, and with the new update, hide them forever.

New feature: archive chats!

Archiving chats and groups is good. But if you don't want chats to unarchive as soon as a new message arrives, there's nothing you could do before. On top of that, having an archive section at the bottom of the chat screen is also quite an awkward place.

But the upcoming WhatsApp update will finally solve this problem by adding a new Archive menu screen to help users. Please note that this feature is only available in version 2.21.11.1 and above for WhatsApp rate users (as of 19May 2021).

A new option easily solves the inconvenience of archiving by making it easier to access archived chats from the top of the chat screen and allowing chats to be archived even when you receive a message. This is extremely useful for chats that you want to permanently hide without having to completely block the contact.

How to permanently archive a WhatsApp chat

To permanently hide archived chats, open the WhatsApp application and click on the button with three vertical dots in the upper right corner.

Select Settings.

Click on Chats.

In the "Archived Chats" section, enable "Keep chats archived".

Now just archive any chat you want.

All your archived chats will no longer appear in the chat list as they used to when a new message appeared in the chat. They will simply remain in the archive. By the way, you don't need to archive the chat again for this. And any chat you archive from now on will remain hidden until you manually unzip it.

How to archive a WhatsApp chat

If you've never archived chats before, here's how to do it. On the chat screen, press and hold the chats you want to hide. Then click Archive in the top right corner.

And also your chats are archived. In stable public versions (which most of us use), these archived conversations are right at the bottom of the chat screen.

How to archive all chats in whatsapp

You also have the option to archive all your chats. This will hide all your open chats and give the chat screen a fresh start. Only those chats will be unarchived by themselves in which a message was received, which ensures that the screen is clear and also never miss an opportunity to reply to those who send you a text message. Here's how to do it:

Go to the advanced options (three vertical dots) in the upper right corner of the screen.

Click on Settings.

Then chats.

Click on the chat history.

Here select Archive all chats.

Press OK to confirm.

How to unarchive a WhatsApp chat

Enabling the "Keep archived chats" option will also give you a quick "Archived" button at the top of your chats (as shown below), allowing you to easily view archived private and group chats. If you do not enable this option, the Archive option can be found at the bottom of all your chats.

To unzip a chat, click the Archived button at the top to do one more thing. This allows you to access archived settings without having to redo your WhatsApp settings.

To access its settings, click Archived.

WhatsApp will show you all private and group chats that you have archived. From here you can unzip the chat.

How to disable permanent hiding of archived chats

Well, you can use the above to enable this feature to disable it. Just turn off the "Keep chats archived" option in Settings > Chats. But here's another quick and easy way to turn off the permanent hiding of archived chats.

Click the Archived button at the top of your messages.

Then Advanced options in the upper right corner.

Click on Archive settings.

And here you will get the same "Keep archived chats" option that you can turn on or off whenever you want.

"Keep chats in archive" feature is not available?

Don't worry if you can't find the Archive menu item. It is only available on WhatsApp version 2. 21.11.1 and above, which is currently still in beta. This feature will transition to a stable public release and be rolled out to users gradually over the coming weeks.

If you want to get this feature right now, you can sign up for the WhatsApp Beta Program and get the update for your device.

But since it's still in development, it's also not available to beta testers. However, we can expect these upcoming features to change the way we support our WhatsApp chats for the better.
