How often should you post to Instagram every week? 

It’s a question that elicits a lot of conflicting opinions from social media managers, creators, and solopreneurs alike. 

So, as a leading social media scheduling and management platform, we took matters (AKA data!) into our own hands and analyzed over 22M Instagram feed posts (images, videos, carousels, and Reels). 

Here’s what we found.

Does Posting Frequency on Instagram Really Matter? 

Short answer: yes.  

While “consistency” is the buzzword du jour, being consistent on Instagram is a great way to grow on the app. 

“The more consistent your posts, the more your audience will get to know you — which in turn builds trust. They’ll also know what to expect from you, giving them a reason to follow and engage with your content,” says Later’s Social Media Manager, Christine Colling.

But it has to be manageable.

Rather than posting just to post, be more strategic and consider what’s achievable for you (or your team). 

“Consistency doesn’t have to mean posting every single day. Set your own pace and create a reasonable schedule — even if it means starting with just one or two posts a week,” adds Christine.  

Plus, not every post type is created equal. 

If your goal is to reach more eyes, you may want to focus on creating Reels or shareable carousel posts

If you’d like to connect with your audience, doubling-down on Instagram Stories could encourage an influx of DMs. 

The takeaway? 

While posting consistently on Instagram will help you build a community, it’s important to:

How Often Should You Post on Instagram Every Week in 2023? 

After analyzing over 22M Instagram feed posts from January 1, 2022 to October 12, 2022, we found that users with:

  • Nano accounts (0-10K followers) post an average of 3 feed posts per week 

  • Micro accounts (10K-100K followers) post an average of 3 feed posts per week 

  • Mid accounts (100K-500K followers) post an average of 5 feed posts per week 

How does that stack up against Instagram’s recommendations? 

In June 2021, Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, suggested posting, “a couple feed posts a week, and a couple stories a day. ” 

Yes, that advice is a little vague, but remember: one size doesn't fit all.

As for Later’s social team?

With over 470K Instagram followers, we post an average of 10 feed posts a week (around 1-2 a day).

But how often should you post for optimal engagement and reach by post type — for example, how many Reels a week? How many carousels? 

Keep reading, we’re breaking down all the data below. 

How Often You Should Post on Instagram in 2023 for Reach & Engagement — According to Post Type

Depending on your specific Instagram goals, your post type could be the ticket to increased reach, engagement, or a combination of both. 

Reach rate is a valuable indicator of your exposure, while engagement rate can indicate how well your content resonates with your community.  

Based on our analysis, here’s how often you should post on Instagram — for optimal reach and engagement — according to post type: 

How Often Nano Accounts Should Post on Instagram— According to Post Type 

According to our analysis, Nano accounts (0-10K followers) see the highest average engagement rates with Reels.

1 Reel = an average engagement rate of 3.95%. 

And if you’ve got even more time (and resources) on your hands, posting 14 Reels = an average engagement rate of 4.73%.

However, carousel posts get a ton of engagement too. Posting just 1 carousel a week = an average engagement rate of 3.36%: 

When it comes to reach rate, posting more Reels reigns supreme:

How Often Micro Accounts Should Post on Instagram — According to Post Type 

Micro accounts (10K-100K followers) tend to see high average engagement rates with Reels and videos.

If you want to go big, 20 Reels = an average engagement rate of 2.99% — the highest of all post types.

In comparison, 1 Reel = an average engagement rate of 1.05%.

But carousel posts come in strong too! Posting anywhere from 1-5 carousels a week can see an average engagement rate of 0.9% or higher:

For reach rate, on average, the more Reels and video content you post per week, the higher your overall reach:

How Often Mid Accounts Should Post on Instagram — According to Post Type 

Mid accounts have between 100K-500K followers, so it comes as no surprise that their engagement rates are lower than their Nano and Micro counterparts.

However, a healthy mix of Reels and carousels — for example, 5 of each a week — can see an average engagement rate over 0.74%:

So, How Often Should You Really Post a Week on Instagram?

If you want to reach new audiences, posting more Reels — paired with an effective hashtag and keyword strategy — is always a good idea.

However, if engagement is the name of the game, consider using a variety of post types — carousel posts and single images have decent engagement rates too. 

But most importantly, try not to get caught up in the numbers — creating quality content trumps quantity. 

Instead, use this data as a starting point to gather insights and experiment with your own account to find what works best.

It’s the question that launched a thousand sleepless nights: “How often should I post on social media?”

Of course, like anything worth knowing, there’s no simple answer to this question. Social media platforms are constantly updating their algorithms, adding new features, and changing the rules of engagement. What worked last year may not work this year, and what works today might become obsolete tomorrow.

We dug into the research and grilled our social media team, and some outside experts, for insights to discover the ideal number of times a day (or week) to post for each platform. Here’s a quick summary of what we found, but read on for more in-depth details:

  • Instagram: Post between 3 and 5 times per week.
  • Instagram Stories: Post 2 times per day.
  • Twitter: Post between 2 and 3 times per day.
  • Facebook: Post between 1 to 2 times per day.
  • LinkedIn: Post between 1 to 2 times per day.
  • TikTok: Post between 3 and 5 times per week.
  • Pinterest: Post at least 1 time per week.
  • Google My Business: Post at least 1 time per week.

How often to post on Instagram

Post 3-5 times per week on Instagram.

Our experts recommend creating at minimum, three posts per week on Instagram. Ideally, these are mixed media posts (carousels, reels, static posts, etc.) Using different social media content types is especially important if you post more than three times per week.

Instagram Stories can be used more frequently, though Instagram’s own Adam Mosseri recommends 2 Stories per day.

Posting frequently on Instagram increases your chances of showing up in the Explore feed, being featured on another account, or appearing in the top search results for keywords you commonly use. Posting regularly is also a great way to test out what resonates with your audience.

If you think that an algorithmically controlled timeline means post-timing doesn’t matter, think again. Our experiments have proven that post timing does have an impact on Instagram engagement.

How often to post on TikTok

Post 3-5 times per week. Or, as much as you can.

While TikTok actually recommends posting 1-4 times per day, that may not be realistic for everyone. If you’re just getting started, 3-5 times per week is a great place to start.

According to Hootsuite’s own Brayden Cohen, Manager of Social Media, “TikTok is the place to test content and see what sticks or flops.”

The TikTok algorithm is tricky, but the more you post on a regular basis, the more likely you are to get in front of a larger audience and see what works well. Aim to post 3-5 times per week so that you’re consistently staying in front of your followers. With each post, track the video views, engagement, and amount of time a viewer spends watching your video to get a better idea of how effective it is.

Using hashtags on each post can also help your content get discovered by potential customers. Be sure to analyze the performance of each post and refine your posting strategy based on what resonates best with your audience.

As well, timing matters on TikTok. Tap into the best times to post on TikTok to ensure your content reaches the most users.

  • TikTok is more popular than Instagram with Gen Z users.

How often to post on Facebook

Post 1-2 times per day on Facebook.

Organic reach is down everywhere, but Facebook seems to be the hardest hit. Currently, the average Facebook page post engagement rate sits around 0.07%. These numbers aren’t expected to perk up anytime soon.

Our experts recommend posting 1-2 times per day on Facebook. This should help you stay present in the minds of your audience, but not go so far as to overwhelm their feeds.

“Daily posting will grow followers 4x faster than posting less than once a week. Makes sense: more visibility,” says Brayden Cohen, Manager, Social Marketing at Hootsuite.

How often to post on Twitter

Post 2-3 times per day on Twitter.

Things move fast on Twitter. This news-centric platform means Tweets have a short lifespan. So, you’ll need to post a little more often than you do on other channels.

Brayden says, “This is probably the only channel I would say that quantity over quality matters.” The more you post, the more likely you are to show up in the constantly growing feed.

There are plenty of power users out there. Some accounts are posting 50 or 100 times a day. If you’ve got the time, we’re certainly not going to stop you. But, to keep your brand’s presence active and engaged on Twitter, you really don’t need to drop everything and commit to a full-time gig Tweeting.

In fact, for the general @Hootsuite channel (where the audience is followers, customers, and prospects), the Hootsuite team posts 2-3 times per day.

Remember that, however frequently you’re posting, the best practice is to follow the rule of thirds:

  • ⅓ of tweets promote your business
  • ⅓ share personal stories
  • ⅓ are informative insights from experts or influencers

Keep in mind, engaging with your audience or other community partners is a big play with posting frequency too!

How often to post on LinkedIn

Post 1-2 times per day on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn itself says companies that post weekly see a 2x life in content engagement. They also recommend posting at least once a day, even on weekends. Oh, and they say scheduling your posts with [amazing] partners like Hootsuite is the way to go. Hey, that’s not a promo, it’s literally in their documentation. You can’t argue the facts!

Keep in mind, LinkedIn content can live in user feeds for a long, long time. This is because when someone engages with your post, it will begin to show up in their connections’ news feeds. Additionally, users can filter the feed by “top” and “recent” content, which could increase the longevity of your posts if they go viral.

Quality over quantity matters here, so it’s important to craft interesting, engaging content that is timely and relevant. Right now, LinkedIn feed filters are changing and you’ll soon be able to filter your feed for topics like “video-specific content.”

Hootsuite’s LinkedIn account tends to fall on the more-frequent end of the posting spectrum. We generally post 2-3 times per day, and sometimes up to five depending on campaigns and events.

How often to post on Pinterest

Post at least 1 time per week on Pinterest.

According to Pinterest, “Quality and relevance matter more than frequency on Pinterest. So while you can determine the best schedule for you, posting on a weekly basis is a good rule of thumb.”

Unlike platforms like Instagram and TikTok, virality isn’t the goal on Pinterest.

Content on Pinterest has a long shelf life. One post can be viewed and shared for weeks or even months after it’s been posted. That’s why creating content with high engagement and relevance is more important than going viral.

To optimize your posts, make sure to follow the creative best practices such as:

  • Use visuals that stand out
  • Target keywords in your captions
  • Use hashtags where appropriate
  • Create content tailored to your audience’s needs

Depending on your goals, you may want to post multiple times each week. How frequently you post will depend on the type of content you’re sharing and the size of your audience. How often to post on Google My Business

Post at least 1 time per week on Google My Business.

Google My Business posts might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about social media for business. But, this platform can be surprisingly effective at helping your local SEO and boosting customer engagement.

Google My Business posts used to expire after 7 days. But, in 2021, Google changed this feature and you’ll now see the last 10 published posts. Google does note that posts are archived after 6 months unless otherwise specified.

Posts on Google My Business need to be incredibly timely. Generally, your audience is looking for something they can do, see, or eat, right now. So, posts should focus on current offers or events.

The ideal frequency for posts depends on the type of post, but generally, it’s recommended to post at least once per week. You can also break up your posts into different times of day and days of the week based on when your target audience is online.

Current offers, images of your business location or space, and new product announcements tend to do well on this platform.

How to know the best posting frequency for social media

Knowing the best posting frequency for social media requires some trial and error. What’s good for some brands may not work for others.

Enterprise teams will be able to post more frequently than individual entrepreneurs. As well, individual traits like audience size, community loyalty, geographic location, and content type can drastically impact the performance of your posts.

Brayden Cohen says, “To see what is best for you, try testing different posts at different times and different quantities to see what drives the best performance for your content and channel. Continue to test, learn, and pivot.”

Always remember: the quality of content matters more than frequency. While posting more content may help to some extent, the more relevant and useful your content is to the audience, the better your social channels will perform.

Rules for publishing content on social networks - when to post and how much

Today we will analyze a seemingly ordinary question. How much and where? And indeed, it is ordinary only at first glance, because in fact the number of posts must be measured depending on the specifics of the account and its goals.

But there is one important rule for all accounts and for all social networks.

Post when you really have something to say. When Your Content Isn't Sucked Out of Your Finger.

If you have a brand account

In this case, it is important not to overdo it, but still stay in touch with customers or potential customers. It's cool to catch that balance when subscribers are waiting for your posts. Because you have already established yourself as a useful and beautiful account.

To do this, you need to carefully work out the content. But that is another story. Let's talk about quantity. It is generally accepted that on Instagram* you need to publish once a day. This just allows you to stay in sight and at the same time not really bother network users. But I'll tell you, it's unlikely that anyone will be upset about skipping one day if you don't have great content. And also, no one will be angry if you have accumulated two important newsworthy events in a day that are worth talking about.

Popsters conducted an audience survey in 2019 and found out that Instagram* accounts with over 100k followers generally publish two posts a day, and one with less than 100k followers. At the same time, the involvement in the post is the same for all types of accounts - the recommendation system of the social network affects.

Posting and engagement on Instagram*

In general, Instagram*: 1-2 posts per day. We skip when there is nothing to say. The main thing is that the photos are beautiful, of high quality, at the professional level.

VKontakte: Once a day, but you can skip it. The posts are more informative: life hacks, useful data, etc.

Facebook*: A couple of times a week, preferably with reference to the news agenda.

If you run a business account

For small and medium businesses that run social media accounts, the rules are about the same: post once a day or even less often. On Instagram*, stories are important for business – through them, you can effectively communicate about promotions, discounts, sales, and other promotional activities. The feed is best used for publishing entertaining, engaging or informational content.

How many stories to make per day? No need to chase the quantity and shoot stories "on the knee" if only they were. The best thing is at least 2-3 stories per day. Better - 5-7.

If there is an informational reason, you can do more. But I recommend not posting everything at once. It should not be that you went to Instagram *, uploaded 5 stories at once and forgot. User engagement is better when there is time between stories. This applies to stories with information, the sale of additional or basic services, finished products or works.

We often open Instagram* and business, in order to be in sight, it is best to constantly flicker in the line above, where the red circles of stories are lit. If you post everything at once, then they can quickly scroll through everything and on the same day, when the user opens Instagram again*, you will not be in sight. Therefore, stories need to be distributed correctly for the day and posted every hour or two. If some event occurs on the territory of the business, then no one forbids you to post often and a lot.

Total: we understand the context, we inform our subscribers, but we don’t load it.

Instagram*: once a day or less. We actively use stories.

VKontakte: once a day or less. Posts are better to publish more detailed and on broad topics. Humor and memes are great too.

Facebook*: several times a week. Ideal - only expert materials.

If you have a media account or city public

If your activities overlap with the news or you take on the role of the media, the rules are different for you. In order to answer what they are, I analyzed dozens of information accounts like CLIQUE.

CLIQUE publishes pop culture posts 24 hours a day

For example, almost every city has a "Typical (insert city name)" account.

We have a "Typical Krasnodar", which can have 10 posts per day

This is due to the fact that information must be submitted according to newsworthy events. And on a day of news, there can be a lot, and it is important for informational publics to work out and talk about everything that the audience lives by (in our case, the city). Therefore, various news publications usually grow quickly and attract subscribers. But, engagement under posts and general interest may fall.

Popsters research confirms this data: the greater the number of followers, the lower the engagement per post, but the higher the total engagement per day. So, on VKontakte, communities with an audience of more than 100,000 people publish up to 22 posts a day, get maximum engagement per day, but less per post. Small communities have the opposite situation: there are few posts, the overall involvement is low, but each post is like a holiday. There is only one conclusion: you can “take” both quantity and quality.

If you are developing a personal account

The most subjective approach to personal accounts. I know popular bloggers, one of whom can post 1-2 times a week, but I also know another who posts often, sometimes several times a day.

Let me give you Valery Dolgova as an example. She doesn't post photos very often on Instagram*. And this allows her to maintain a certain image of mystery.

Her opponent in this regard is Sasha Zharkova. She posts one, sometimes two photos a day, as well as many stories. This amount of content completely immerses subscribers in her life.

Based on the analysis of popular bloggers, you can measure the average "temperature in the hospital":

Instagram*: once a day.

Facebook*, VKontakte: 1 time in several days.

Best time to post content on social media

We answered the question "how much" to post optimally for different types of accounts, now let's figure out - "when" it is better to post.

Top tip: keep track of your publication statistics. For example, in the DataFan service, you can see user engagement by day of the week and time of day for a certain period of time.

Of course, to collect statistics, you need to post regularly - it is difficult to collect reliable data in a week

In the meantime, you can look at someone else's experience. Sprout Social conducted a study and collected data on the best time to post on social networks in 2021. They studied statistics from more than 20,000 of their customers to find out when users interacted with content the most and least often, broken down by platform and industry.

The service does not work with VKontakte, and accordingly there is no data on the time when it is better to post on VK in the report. But there is Facebook* and Instagram*.

Note that best posting time on any platform is always an average. It all depends on the audience. For example, schoolchildren are not very comfortable using social networks when they are in class.

Considering Facebook*'s status as the world's most popular social network, it's no wonder it's active almost around the clock
  • Best time: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 to 13:00.
  • Best days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday.
  • Worst day: Saturday.

Best time to post content on Instagram*.

Instagram* is not far behind Facebook*. No wonder it is being developed as a platform for brand promotion, regularly introducing new business opportunities
  • Best time: Tuesday from 11:00 to 14:00, Monday to Friday from 11:00.
  • Best day: Tuesday.
  • Worst day: Sunday.

Sprout Social also studied how audience engagement on Instagram* and Facebook* changes on the pages of different brands, at different times and days of the week.

Health and beauty

In 2020-21, medical topics have become much more popular on social networks due to quarantine measures. Educating and informing the audience are key priorities for a successful promotion strategy for healthcare companies

Best time to post on Facebook*.

  • Best time: Monday to Friday at 11:00.
  • Best day: Tuesday.
  • Worst day: Sunday.
