How to hide someone's Instagram Posts & Stories without unfollowing

Christian Zibreg ∙ Updated March 11, 2022

Did you know you can hide anyone’s Instagram posts, Stories, or both from your feed without unfollowing them and without them knowing you muted them? This way, you can keep your Instagram feed clean, and the person won’t even be notified that you have muted their account.

Hide any Instagram account’s posts or stories

As an alternative to unfollowing, muting allows Instagram users to mute someone’s posts, Stories, or both without unfollowing them. Here are the various ways to do that.

From your Instagram feed

  1. Open Instagram and tap the three dots button next to an account’s post.
  2. Tap Hide.
  3. Tap Mute [username].
  4. Now, choose Mute posts to filter out an account’s post from your feed or choose Mute posts and story to mute both posts and stories from that account.

From the story section

  1. Open Instagram and tap the story of an account you want to mute.
  2. Tap the three dots button from the top right.
  3. Tap Mute.
  4. Choose Mute story or Mute story and posts.

Mute Stories quickly with a press

  1. Open the Instagram app and press and hold a story thumbnail from the top.
  2. Tap Mute.
  3. Choose Mute story or Mute story and posts.

From the person’s Instagram profile

  1. Inside the Instagram app, go to a person’s profile.
  2. Tap Following.
  3. Tap Mute.
  4. Enable the toggle to mute Posts, Stories, or both.

When you mute someone, they won’t know you’ve done so. You can still view the profiles and posts from anyone you’ve muted on their profile page. Additionally, you will continue getting push notifications from any muted users who have tagged you in posts or commented on one of your posts or stories.

Unmute posts and stories for an account on Instagram

Follow these steps if you change your mind and want to start seeing posts and stories again from the account you once muted:

  1. Go to the person’s Instagram profile. To find them, you can use the search box and type their name or username.
  2. Tap Following.
  3. Tap Mute.
  4. Turn off the toggle for Posts and Stories to unmute them.

How to mute someone on Instagram without unfollowing them

Tired of scrolling past endless selfies and stay-at-home challenges but don’t want to risk the awkward consequences of unfollowing someone? Here’s how to mute someone on Instagram without them ever knowing you’ve done it.

If your uni mates are sharing one too many summer throwback from 2019, it can be tempting to reach for the unfollow button. Luckily, there’s another (more temporary) feature you can make use of: the mute button.

Instagram introduced its mute feature in May 2018. Like the mute option on other social media sites, Instagram’s mute button allows you to hide posts or stories belonging to specific accounts from appearing on your feed. Basically, the button lets you take a break from seeing another user’s content without the commitment (or consequences) of hitting the unfollow or block buttons.

“When you mute an account, you can still see posts on their profile page and get notified about comments or posts you’re tagged in.” explains Instagram. “The accounts you mute will not be aware that you’ve muted them. You can always unmute an account to get their posts back in your feed.”

So, how do you mute someone on Instagram without them finding out?

  • Tap on the search icon

How to mute Instagram Stories

Muting stories is a little different to muting posts. Because stories are considered more temporary than posts, some users will update them throughout the day – giving you all the more motive to hit that mute button when they get too much.

Muting an account’s story will send them to the end of your story feed, get rid of the colourful ring when they update their story and prevent their pics and videos from automatically playing when you tap through the stories you do follow.

You can use both of the above methods to mute a user’s story. Simply toggle ‘Stories’ on or tap ‘Mute Story’ to hide stories from your feed. You can also mute story’s directly from the story section of your feed.

How to mute stories on Instagram:

  • Open Instagram
  • Swipe across the top of your feed to find the account you’d like to mute
  • Tap and hold the account’s icon
  • Tap ‘Mute’
  • Tap ‘Mute Story’

How is it different from unsubscribing or blocking?

Unlike blocking and unsubscribing, you can continue to visit a hidden user on the page, watch his posts, and he will not even know that he is hidden. Just annoying content will disappear in the feed. Convenient, and no need to explain anything to anyone.

When hiding content, its author will be able to continue to write to you in Direct, leave comments, unlike blocked users. If you unsubscribe, for example, from a closed account, you will no longer be able to see the content on its page until you subscribe again.

How to hide posts and stories on Instagram: step by step instructions

Method #1 - in the feed itself

Step 1 . Open the feed (house icon), click on the 3 dots above the unnecessary content (post menu).

Step 2 . We find the word "Hide". We press.

Step 3 . We choose what content we want to hide from the feed - only publications or publications + user stories.

It is important to note that all posts of the user will be hidden in general, and not just the post on which you clicked "Hide". That is, there is currently no opportunity to hide posts from the feed selectively on Instagram - either all or nothing.

Method #2 - on the user page

Step 1 . We go to the page of the user whose content we want to hide. Click on the "Subscriptions" button.

Step 2 . Then "Hide".

Step 3 . We move the sliders to the ON position on the type of content that we want to hide - publications and / or stories. With this method, the author will also not know that you have hidden his content.

How to return hidden posts to the feed

To return hidden posts, go to the page of the user whose posts or stories you have hidden. Next, we perform the same operation as described above, only instead of hiding, on the contrary, we activate the display.

Also, if you forgot whose publications you hid, open your account settings, select the "Privacy" item and find "Hidden accounts" below.

From this section you can quickly see whose entries are hidden from your feed and, if you change your mind, turn them back on.

Conclusion

It can be seen that Instagram cares about the convenience of users - the developers did not fail with this function. Previously, the only way to get rid of unnecessary content was to unsubscribe or block, but now you can simply customize the feed for yourself.

How to hide your and Alien stories in the INSTAGRAM

9000 9000 9000. Instagram allows you to share Stories only with selected followers or hide them from specific users. This is far from new: Instagram* allowed publishing stories for a certain circle of subscribers back in 2018, with the introduction of the “Close Friends” feature.

What is important to know about hidden Stories on Instagram*

  • You can hide both your own and other people's Stories. Restrictions can be lifted at any time.
  • Hide is not the same as block. Users you hide Stories from will see the rest of your content.
  • You can hide Stories from both subscribers and those who are not subscribed to your account.

In general, this feature helps to make Instagram* more comfortable. It helps to manage privacy and clean the feed from informational garbage when it comes to other people's stories. This is more relevant for personal accounts, but business profiles can also use this feature to good use. For example, create a list of “warm” customers and create stories for them with elements of a sales funnel.

How to hide your Instagram Stories*

Method 1: Only show stories to certain users.

How to create a list of close friends on Instagram*

Create a list of close friends. There you can add both subscribers and users who are not subscribed to you.

How to add a user to your close friends list on Instagram*

To add new people to your list, click the search field again. You can also delete individual users or reset the entire list at any time.

When posting new content, click on the "Close Friends" icon. The story will fly away only to selected people on the list. An icon will appear in the upper right corner.

How to publish a Story for close friends only

Stories intended only for close friends are posted with green outlines instead of the traditional red/orange outline. If you saw such a story in the feed, it means that its author has added you to the "Close Friends" list.

Method 2: restrict viewing stories to certain people.

Go to the Stories settings and select the "Hide my story from" option. By default, there will be 0 people, you can add anyone there.

Hidden stories can be added to Highlights, but they will only be available to people from the Close Friends list. Other users will see an empty icon.

How to hide other people's Stories in your Instagram feed*

You can return stories from the same user to the feed by selecting the "Show story" item in the settings. You can see all the users whose stories you have unsubscribed from in the "Hidden accounts" menu (not to be confused with blocked ones!).

A few questions about hidden stories

Can I limit my stories to all but one person?

Yes, if you add this user to the "Close Friends" list and publish Stories only for this list (see method 1).

How do I know if someone is hiding Instagram Stories from me*?

Not 100% accurate. Instagram* does not inform about the actions of other users regarding your account. Here we can only speculate. If earlier a user posted several stories a day, and now you don’t see a single one (while the posts are published with the same frequency), most likely you are not included in the list of favorites.
