Over the past few years, WhatsApp has established itself as the go-to social media platform, helping people connect with friends and family. One feature that endeared users is being able to send or receive an unlimited number of messages that don’t autodelete, as happens with some other social media platforms.

However, WhatsApp allows you to delete the messages you don’t want to keep. This option means there’s a possibility of deleting something accidentally. You might also lose your messages inadvertently, for example, when switching to a new device or even while resetting your device.

But does that mean you lose those messages forever? The answer is no. If you have accidentally deleted messages from your WhatsApp account, there is still a chance to recover them.

How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages

If you’re an avid WhatsApp user, there’s a good chance you’ve had the unfortunate experience of losing some of your messages. It could be a funny text from a friend, contact information shared with you by a colleague, or even an exchange you could present as evidence in court.

Although WhatsApp doesn’t provide a direct built-in tool to help you retrieve deleted messages, you can still recover them in several ways. However, recovery methods generally depend on the type of device you’re using. For example, what works for Android devices may not work for iPhones.

First, let’s dive in and see how to recover your old WhatsApp messages on an Android device.

Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages using Android

Android devices often get praised for their affordability, large display, open-source programs (which makes them highly customizable), and an incredible app selection in the Google Play Store. It’s no wonder that most Android devices today are fully compatible with WhatsApp.

But as with other devices, you can lose your WhatsApp data in a matter of seconds. Losing your data can happen if you accidentally hit the “delete” button or switch to a new device.

Luckily, WhatsApp comes equipped with a cloud-based backup solution that can save the day if you lose your messages and want to retrieve them. But how exactly does it work?

Once you’ve enabled backup in the settings section of your WhatsApp account, the app starts to store copies of all your messages in WhatsApp’s servers at regular intervals. When a backup process begins, the app checks for message duplicates on its server. If it doesn’t find one, a copy gets created immediately. The app also saves any new photos or videos automatically.

Therefore, your backup should be the first place you look when you delete a message accidentally.

Note: To see if your messages are backing up, go to Settings>Chats>Chat Backup. Then, verify that the email listed is one that you can access.

Here’s how to recover deleted WhatsApp messages on an Android device when you’ve backed up your data:

  1. Delete WhatsApp from your device.
  2. Download and install a new copy of WhatsApp from Google Play.
  3. After installation, open WhatsApp and enter your details, including your name and number.
  4. During installation, a prompt will appear on your screen asking whether you’d like to
Restore your chats from your Google Drive. Tap on Restore to initiate the recovery process.
  5. After recovering your data, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

All your old messages and media should now be available in your chats.

Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages on an iPhone

Like Android, the WhatsApp application for iPhones supports backup to the cloud at regular intervals. So long as your backup is enabled, WhatsApp will store copies of all your messages in the iCloud Drive. You can even see when the last backup was performed by opening the settings section of your account.

Recovering deleted messages from iCloud is straightforward:

  1. Uninstall WhatsApp from your device by choosing Delete App.
  2. Visit the App Store and download a new copy of WhatsApp.
  3. After downloading the app successfully, install it on your device.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to recover all the deleted messages.

Now, WhatsApp displays all your deleted messages in your chat.

It’s crucial to ensure enough space in your local storage before the recovery process starts. As a rule of thumb, the available local storage should be twice as much as the size of your backup. For example, if your backup is 1 GB, there should be at least 2 GB of free storage space on your device.

How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages without a Backup

Although data recovery from your WhatsApp backup is fast and convenient, you may have forgotten to enable it when setting up your account.

The good news is that you can still recover lost messages and media thanks to your device’s local backup or third-party software.

Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages without a Backup on Android Devices

Apart from cloud-based backup, all Android devices come with Android Local Backup—the default data backup service for many Android devices. The application typically gets included in nearly every new Android smartphone with Google Mobile Services (a collection of Google apps that help support functionality across devices).

If you haven’t enabled cloud backup on your WhatsApp account, you can still recover the data stored in your device’s local backup. Here’s how to go about it:

  1. Open your device’s File Manager and tap on WhatsApp.
  2. Select the Database folder.
  3. Look for a file named msgstore.db.crypt12 and change its name to msgstore_BACKUP.db.crypt12 without quotes.
  4. After that, look for the file named msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 and rename it to msgstore.db.crypt12 without quotes.
  5. Now, delete WhatsApp from your device, download a new copy from the Google Play store, and install it.
  6. Since you don’t have any files backed up in the cloud, you get prompted to restore your chats from the local phone backup. Tap on Restore to initiate the recovery process.

Now, you can view most deleted messages in your chats.

The downside to this local backup method is that you can only recover the most recent messages. That’s because the amount of backup space available for each app is limited.

Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages without a Backup on iPhone

If you run WhatsApp on iOS and cloud backup isn’t enabled, you can only recover deleted messages via a third-party tool.

Although there are several options to choose from, MiniTool Mobile Recovery for iOS stands out because it doesn’t require you to uninstall WhatsApp.

Here’s how to use it:

  1. Download and install MiniTool Mobile Recovery for iOS on your PC.
  2. Connect your phone to your PC via a suitable USB cable.
  3. Launch MiniTool Mobile Recovery for iOS on your PC.
  4. Click on Scan to initiate a thorough search through all the social media and communication apps installed on your iPhone.
  5. At this point, select WhatsApp from the menu displayed on the left side of your screen. All messages, including the ones that got deleted, should appear.
  6. Select the messages you’d like to recover and then hit the Recover button in the lower right corner.

In closing, WhatsApp is a great way to communicate with your friends and family. Regardless, there can be moments when you accidentally delete messages or lose them while switching devices. If this happens to you, don’t panic. You now have multiple ways to recover the deleted messages and view or share them as you like, whether you had backups enabled in WhatsApp or not. Give the above options a try!

WhatsApp Message Recovery FAQs

Does WhatsApp keep your messages?

When you delete a message on WhatsApp, it disappears. However, it isn’t gone forever. Your messages get stored in the cloud (Google Drive or iCloud). They also get stored on your device. For these reasons, you can recover your deleted WhatsApp messages even if you need a third-party service.

I reinstalled the app, but none of my messages appeared. What’s happening?

When you follow the instructions above to uninstall the app and reinstall it, you must log in to the correct account. Using a different email, phone, or phone number is the likely culprit of your missing messages.

As shown above, open the WhatsApp Settings and tap on Chats. Then tap on Chat Backup. You can verify the last time WhatsApp saved your chats and the email address associated with that backup.

While difficult to do accidentally, WhatsApp users may occasionally delete a conversation. Although there are ways to recover messages from the Facebook-owned app, people may encounter some trouble depending on whether they archived or fully erased their messages. Express.co.uk has compiled a guide on how to recover deleted WhatsApp messages for both iPhone and Android users.

Understanding WhatsApp chat backups:

In order to retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages, you need to enable Chat Backup in Settings.

WhatsApp offers several backup frequencies in Under Auto Backup: Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Off.

Remember, WhatsApp will only retain the most recent backup file in iOS and the two latest backup files in Android.

These daily auto backups make it easy to recover messages soon after deletion.

Weekly auto backups allow you to go further back in time to recover deleted WhatsApp messages from less than seven days ago at the expense of losing recent chat messages.

Simply select the WhatsApp auto backup frequency that best suits your needs.

How to read WhatsApp messages discreetly

Imagine the following situation: a wife washes dishes in the kitchen, her husband tells her from the living room to buy cigarettes. The wife finished the kitchen chores, got dressed and went shopping, and when she returned, it turned out that her husband was left without tobacco products. The situation is unpleasant, while no one seems to be to blame: after all, the spouse did not know that the sound of water from the tap drowned out his words.

In many modern messengers, including WhatsApp, the occurrence of such cases is prevented by sending a notification to the interlocutor that your message has been read. The function is certainly very useful, but there are times when the recipient of the SMS does not want the sender to know about reading it. nine0003

You may not always be eager to reply to messages, especially if the other person is talkative and you are not. Or if the information sent does not interest you at all, but you consider it indecent not to respond to the message if your counterpart knows that you have read it. Finally, if you do not want to communicate with a certain contact at all, but you do not consider it possible to delete it.

In all these cases, you can make sure that your interlocutor does not receive notifications about reading his messages, which you still want to read out of elementary curiosity. And you can do this in many ways, which we will talk about today. You will only have to choose the most suitable of them. nine0003

Reading messages through the notification panel

The first and easiest way to read an incoming message in WhatsApp discreetly does not require you to perform any actions at all. If you have been using the messenger for a long time, then most likely you already know about it. The fact is that when WhatsApp receives a new message, it notifies the owner of the mobile gadget about the new event by placing part of the text in the notification bar.

You can read it without opening the application itself, and for obvious reasons, the interlocutor will not know whether you have read his message or not. nine0003

Of course, if the message is short, you will be able to read it completely, otherwise it is not guaranteed that you will guess what it is about from the passage of text, and then you will have to start the messenger.

And one more limitation: this function must be activated, otherwise no text messages will appear in the notification panel of the smartphone. You can do this as follows:

      • launch the messenger;
      • enter the application settings by tapping on the three dots at the top of the WhatsApp window; nine0028
      • select the "Notifications" tab;
      • tap on the sub-item "Pop-up notifications";
      • turn on the "Only when the screen is off" parameter.

      Activating Airplane Mode

Another well-known and popular way to quietly read a message without opening WhatsApp is to use Airplane Mode.

The method is very easy to use: when you receive a notification about a new message, put your phone in flight mode, the easiest way to do this is through the notification panel. nine0003

Then you can safely open WhatsApp and read the message in normal mode, in this case the blue checkmark should not appear, that is, your interlocutor will not know that you have already read his message.

Then you need to close the messenger and only after that turn off the flight mode, not vice versa! Otherwise, immediately after switching to normal talk mode, blue checkmarks will appear, even if the phone is offline.

Note that this method is really easy to use and easy to remember, but in flight mode you will not be able to use WhatsApp fully - only to read the correspondence. nine0003

      Through the WhatsApp settings

In principle, nothing prevents you from making a message unread using the WhatsApp settings. The idea is simple - you turn off read receipts and only then view the message.

To do this, start the messenger, go to the settings (three dots in the upper right corner of the application), select the "Account" item and then the "Privacy" sub-item.

It remains to uncheck the "Read reports" option, after which the sender will no longer show that you have read his messages. But this is a double-edged sword, because now you will not be able to know if your SMS messages are being read from the other side. nine0003

In other words, this method can only be called acceptable if you want to disable the display of read receipts forever and for everyone, including yourself. As a temporary measure, it can also be used, but the first two methods are much more convenient in this regard.

      Using the WhatsApp Widget

Another good way to make viewed WhatsApp messages unread for the interlocutor. True, it is only suitable for users of Android phones, but since those are the majority, this can hardly be called a disadvantage. nine0003

The essence of the method is to place the messenger widget on the main screen. In this case, when a new message arrives in WhatsApp, it will be shown through the widget, without launching the messenger itself. True, this only applies to the text itself and messenger emoticons, which can be easily interpreted. The widget will not show photos, video and audio content, it has not been trained in this.

The principle of adding a widget to the main screen is standard: you need to press your finger on an empty area of \u200b\u200bthe screen and hold it until a menu appears at the bottom in which we are interested in the “Widgets” tab. After pressing it, a screen with a list of available widgets will appear, scroll through it, looking for the WhatsApp icon. Press it and hold until the widget appears in the bottom status bar. You can delete it at any time if you wish. nine0003

      Unseen application

Almost all functions of Android and system applications are duplicated by third-party software. Messengers are no exception. In particular, for WhatsApp there is a specialized application that allows you to hide the fact that you have read his messages for the sender.

All you need to do is go to Google Play and type Unseen in the search box, download the app and install it on your phone. After starting, follow the prompt of the wizard. nine0003

Before you can use Unseen to read messages without going to WhatsApp, you will need to agree to the request to allow notifications to be shown.

It may seem that using a third-party application is not a very attractive method in terms of time costs, but it is not. Firstly, Unseen understands not only text, but also all media formats, and secondly, it works equally well with other popular instant messengers, including Telegram, Viber, Messenger, Instagram. And no blue ticks. nine0003

      Browser extension

If you have a desktop PC or laptop, you can use them to hide that you have read the message.

To do this, install the WAIncognito extension in your browser. Today there are versions for Google Chrome, Firefox and the browser from Yandex.

So, go to the Chrome Web Store, type in WAIncognito in the search bar, click on the extension icon that appears and click the "Install" button. nine0003

The list of installed extensions will be replenished with the web version of the messenger, with which you can read incognito messages without logging into WhatsApp.

The extension works with all types of content, its functionality is not much inferior to the mobile application.

      Method for iPhone

Users of "apple" gadgets can use another way to read messages hidden from the sender, but for this their operating system must be at least iOS 13.

The very way to read messages is very simple and easy to remember: as soon as the smartphone or tablet's lock screen is notified that a WhatsApp message has been received, you need to tap on it and hold your finger a little longer than you usually do. As a result, the full text of the message will be displayed on the screen, and if it is very large, it can be scrolled up and down. The main thing is not to brush off the notification from the screen, in this case, to read the message, you will have to launch the messenger.

Reading a message on the lock screen will not result in blue checkmarks and the sender will not know you have read it.

As for the performance of the method on older phones, this function will work on those that can be updated to iOS 13, and these are almost all models starting with iPhone 6S.

Now you know how to read WhatsApp messages discreetly. Tell us in the comments about your experience of turning off notifications when you read a message. nine0003

How to read a WhatsApp message so that it remains unread

Sometimes you want to read messages in the messenger so that the interlocutor does not see it. Thanks to certain tricks, a WhatsApp message can be read unnoticed and left unread.

      August 08, 2021 Miscellaneous

      3 minutes, 9 seconds read nine0003

      Miscellaneous

Some people like to accuse other users of reading received messages and leaving them unanswered. Senders will know about this because the read message has a special designation - two blue checkmarks.

If you don’t want to show on WhatsApp that the message has been viewed, but you still want to read it, you need to perform a series of actions in the privacy settings: nine0003

      1. In the application, click on the special sign “⋮” at the top of the screen and go to the “Settings” menu

      2. On your Android device, select "Account" > "Privacy"; on an IOS device, select "Account" > "Privacy";

      3. From the list of section options provided, find "Read Receipts" and click "Off".

Thanks to this option, you can discreetly read almost any message on WhatsApp, with the exception of group conversations, where read reports are not disabled. nine0003

There are a couple more nuances:
      1. The function of disabling the display of blue checkmarks works in both directions: both for the interlocutors and for yourself. This means that you will also not be aware whether the recipient has read the sent message.
      2. Turning off automatically hides the ability to view the status of other subscribers.

      Read message via desktop widget

Android phones have a special widget for WhatsApp, with which you can view the text of messages without the “read” mark. Its only negative is that text messages and emoticons are available for reading. Other formats such as voice messages, video files or photos open directly in the application's interface. nine0003

How to install the WhatsApp widget:

      1. Long press on an empty space on the Desktop to open Widgets
      2. Click on them and select the "WhatsApp" icon.
      3. Drag the widget onto the screen so that its window always displays SMS that come in the messenger itself

Note: on Android models above version 5, the widget is added automatically when you install the application on your phone.

Turn off internet before reading messages

A simple trick for users who don't want to turn off browsing reports. Turn off the Internet on your phone before opening a dialog box with a new message.

To quickly do this on your smartphone, swipe the notifications and icons from the top, click on the “WI-FI” and Mobile Internet icons to turn them off. Or you can turn on Airplane Mode so that all networks are unavailable.

After completing these steps, you can safely open correspondence and read messages, because the phone will not be able to send a viewing report to the WhatsApp server. nine0003

However, you should be careful, because when gaining access to the network, the phone will be able to send a report.
