How to publish photos and videos of your children on Facebook*

Those of you who have children (or are planning to in the near future) have probably faced the task of collecting and distributing photo/video content about a newborn — grandparents and parents on business trips rightly demand to keep them informed about what is happening.

In this article I will share my experience in solving this problem and dwell in detail on the specifics of privacy settings in facebook*.

Service selection criteria

Mandatory requirements

Grandparents want to receive regular information about the daily life of a newborn. Mostly in the form of photos, sometimes videos and small notes.
Mom and dad are content providers.
Access to content should be strictly limited: only for a given circle of people (family).

Optional Requirements

All content must be automatically collected and available for viewing in chronological order on mobile and desktop devices.
Subscribers should be notified when new content is added.
All participants in the process (except for a newborn) should be able to express their opinion and share their impressions of what they saw.

Assumptions

All participants in the process (except the newborn) have regular access to the Internet.
Participants have a high level of smartphone penetration.

Based on the requirements, it becomes clear that the cloud will help us, it remains only to choose the appropriate service. Among the ones I reviewed were Path, Google+, Picassa, Flickr, and Facebook*.

As the title of this article suggests, I chose Facebook* and I'm happy with it. However, the setting of many options turned out to be not too obvious, so I will dwell on them in more detail.

I will say in advance that it is most convenient to perform all actions with an account on behalf of an individual user in Google Chrome. If you don't want to spend time setting it up, you can open an anonymous window (Command+Shift+N), but in this case, you will need to log in every time you log in.

Account registration

1. First you need to register a separate email. With this, I think everyone can handle it. I recommend immediately setting up a redirect from it to your personal mailbox.

2. Facebook* does not allow registration of a user under the age of 13. So I pointed to 20 years more. Theoretically, you can submit a request to set any date, but what happens next is not exactly known, and I decided not to experiment. So that the year does not confuse anyone, on the profile editing page you can set the display of only the day and month of birth.

3. If you wish, you can also specify the name of the page, after which the page will be available at

Privacy settings

The correct privacy settings are above all, otherwise dad runs the risk of getting mum. Be careful with each of the items:

Open Privacy Settings and:

1. Limit the visibility of basic information only for friends.

2. Set the Profile and Tagging settings.

Please note : even if you set the content visibility only for friends, but then tag one of the friends in the photo (or confirm their tag), then this photo will become available to the friends of the tagged one. For example: if you mark a dad in a photo under a newborn's account, then this photo will become available for viewing by dad's friends. And it will be visible only after the next opening of the window.

If you really want, you can first mark someone in the photo, and then go to the photo privacy settings and set the custom mode. The checkbox "show photos to friends" of the one you tagged must be unchecked:

3. Add friends.

Those who will be added as friends will be able to view the content on the page we created. Relationships can be specified if desired. Remember to limit the display of this information to friends only:

Adding content

Now you can add photos, text and videos to the created page. You can do this in four ways:

1. from a desktop computer;
2. using the facebook* mobile application on a phone or tablet;
3. using a third-party mobile application with automatic export to facebook*
4. by sending to a special email.

In my experience, photos are the most commonly added. They are made from the phone, so it is most convenient to use the application or email.

Since the penetration of iPhones among the relatives of the hero of this article is 62.5% (and 100% along the father's line), the examples below will be for the iPhone. I'm sure other platforms have something similar.

Path, the only sensible application found that exports to facebook*, didn't fit, because it takes a long time to import content to facebook* through it, and sometimes the video doesn't get there at all. In addition, in the feed, messages added via Path are often hidden in the feed of subscribers.

The official facebook* apps for iPhone/iPad currently do not allow you to add multiple photos at once. You can use the free PhotoUp+, which solves this problem, but the main inconvenience remains - the inability to send multiple photos in the background. You have to wait until all the photos are loaded, which is especially inconvenient with mobile Internet.

As a result, it turned out to be the most convenient and fastest way to add photos by sending them to a special email (this happens in the background). There are a lot of instructions on the Internet that you need to go to the page under your account, and you will see a special personalized email. In fact, links to facebook* mobile applications have already been published on this page, and the email we need is on the page. You need to open it under your child's account:

Email cannot be called mnemonic, so we add it to the phone's address book and, as a result, we get the opportunity to add content to facebook * in a couple of clicks.

The subject of the email will be used as a comment on the photo. The text from the body of the email will be ignored. You can send both photos and videos, but a large video will not be added (the exact size is not set).

Note : Anything sent to this address (from any address) will be published. Therefore, only share this email with people you trust to add new content on behalf of your child.

Notice to add content

It remains to make sure that the involved relatives quickly learn about the publications on the wall of a new facebook user*. To do this, they need to add a relative to closed friends. Notifications about new content and comments will be both on facebook* itself and on the phones of relatives (if these phones support push notifications and are activated)

Timeline - the new Facebook profile / Habr

Since the advent of Facebook, the profile page has helped you tell others about yourself. Introducing the Chronicle of Events - a new type of profile page

The Chronicle of Events (Timeline - at the moment this name does not yet have an official Russian translation on Facebook, probably when it appears, it will be different) stores all of your most interesting publications that you have ever posted. Now they will not disappear anywhere as news is added.

The chronicle of events is much wider than the old version of the profile and is more visual. The first thing that catches your eye is the huge photo at the top of the page. This is your cover and it's up to you to choose which photo to post here.

Below your photo, you'll see all of your posts and photos displayed in chronological order. You can highlight individual events in the Chronicle by doubling their size, as well as remove from view what you would like to hide.

Filling in the gaps

If some important moments of your life were not included in the Chronicle of Events, you can open the date when they happened and add their description.

You can also use your personal action list. It displays everything you've ever posted since you created your Facebook account. Click on any of the posts to add it to the Chronicle of Events for your friends to see.
