One of Instagram’s most popular features is the option to add music directly to Instagram stories. Instagram offers a lengthy selection of tunes from its music library and the ability to import songs from other music streaming services, like Spotify.

Instagram gets new tunes in its music library daily. This article will teach you everything you need about adding music to your Instagram Story or post. You’ll also see some common questions and misconceptions regarding Instagram music. Let’s get started.

How to Add Music to an Instagram Story on Android/iOS/iPhone

It doesn’t matter if you have an iPhone or an Android device, as long as Instagram is updated to the latest version. The process of adding music to Instagram is the same for both.

Note: This method requires lyrics or album art to appear on your Story, but you can resize it to your liking. Also, you can legally use premium music clips from Instagram’s library (uses Facebook Sound Collection).

Here is how it’s done.

  1. Open the “Instagram app,” then tap on “Your story” in the upper-left corner.
  2. Proceed to add a Story. Hold down on the first image/video, then tap on each additional one you want to add/remove. Tap on “Next” when finished.
  3. Choose the style for your Story, which includes “Layout” for a collage Story or “Separate” to make each image/video a new segment. Choosing “Separate” requires editing each segment.
  4. Tap the “sticker icon” at the top of your screen.
  5. Select the “Music sticker.” You can use the search bar at the top to go directly to the correct one.
  6. Instagram displays recommended songs, as well as different categories you can choose. Tap on the adjacent “Play” icon to preview each track.
  7. Tap on a song to add it to your post or Story.
  8. Adjust the “slider bar” at the bottom to choose the song position. You’ll see the lyrics while you slide. You can also change the music and text color/appearance/style or use album art.
  9. Tap “Done” when finished with your editing process.
  10. Resize, rotate, or reposition the lyrics (or album art) on the screen by holding down on them and moving, sliding, or twisting them.
  11. If you chose “Separate” for the layout in “Step 3” above, you need to edit each Story segment individually by tapping on it. Each one has music (if desired) when they autoplay.
  12. Tap on “Next” when finished editing your Story.
  13. Choose “Your Story” at the bottom to post it on your Instagram Story.

When your followers open your Instagram Story, your added song automatically plays for each segment you edited. If they want to see which song is playing, they can tap on the title under your name, and the song pops up in another tab.

How To Add Music to an Instagram Reel

Instagram released the “Reels” feature in August 2020. With it being such a new option, Reels are one of the easiest ways to post content on Instagram, including music. To add music to a reel, follow the steps below.

  1. Tap the “+” sign in the top right of the Instagram home page.

  2. Slide and highlight Reels at the bottom of the page.
  3. Select the “Music” icon on the left.
  4. Choose the “music track” you want to add to the Reel.
  5. Adjust the “slider” at the bottom of the screen. Select the part of the song you’re using for the Reel.

If you forget to add music before recording your Reel, don’t worry. Instagram allows you to add the music before or after recording the Reel.

How to Add Music to an Instagram Post Using Third-Party Apps

It’s important to know that Instagram doesn’t allow you to add music directly to your Instagram posts. You can only add music to your Instagram Stories and Reels. Even if you add music to a video you made on your Story and download it, it will download without the song.

If you want to attach a song to a video and upload it on Instagram as a post, you have to edit your video beforehand. There are loads of free video editing apps and programs available that allow you to add music to your videos. When finished, you can upload the video to your Instagram feed. One of the most feature-rich and user-friendly free video editing apps is InShot. You can also use songs, playlists, and albums from Spotify.

How to Add Audio/Music to Instagram Posts Using InShot

  1. Open the “InShot app” and tap on the “Video button.”
  2. Select the video you want to add sound to from the list.
  3. Tap on the “MUSIC” button in the bottom left corner.
  4. Tap on “Tracks” to open the music menu.
  5. To add a featured track, select the “FEATURED” tab, then browse and choose from categories like “Vlog,” “Mood,” “Beats,” etc.
  6. Select a song to preview. Then, tap on the “download icon” or “USE” to add it to your video.
  7. Select the “My Music” tab in the navigational menu below the video to add your own music.
  8. Browse and select any song to preview it, then tap on “USE” to add it to your video. Be cautious with copyright material.
  9. To add sound effects, tap on the “EFFECTS” tab, then choose a category.
  10. Select an effect track to preview it, then tap on “USE” to add it to your video. All sounds in the “EFFECTS” tab are free from copyright protection.
  11. To edit the timing, fade, or other settings associated with the audio, tap the “track bar” for the correct audio title. Just tap it. You’ll see white markers appear on the ends.
  12. Hold down on the beginning or end “white marker.” Move/adjust the audio track’s start position (always starting from the beginning of the track) in correlation with the video. You can also adjust the end position (always cuts out the remainder). For advanced editing, go to the next step. Otherwise, skip to “Step 16.”
  13. While the audio track is still selected (shows white markers), tap on “EDIT.
  14. Slide the “purple dot markers” (left and right) to clip the audio as you see fit, such as cutting it to start at the 3.7-second mark rather than the beginning and ending the track at the 19.4-second mark. The preview continues to play as you edit.
  15. Tap on the “checkmark” when finished with your cutting, volume level, and fading adjustments.
  16. The app returns to the track’s audio editing screen. Tap on the “play” icon to preview your edits.
  17. If needed, you can re-edit the track by tapping the “audio’s track bar” and selecting “EDIT.”
  18. If you don’t need to re-edit the track, you can add more “TRACKS” or “EFFECTS,” or even “RECORD” your own sounds.
  19. You can adjust the video’s master volume by tapping “VOLUME.”
  20. Tap on the “checkmark” to save all changes.
  21. When satisfied with the final edits, tap on “SAVE” in the upper-right corner.
  22. Confirm your resolution, framerate, and size, then tap on “SAVE” once more.
  23. Your audio/video file is now saved, represented by a green circled checkmark. You can (A) tap the checkmark icon to see the location details, (B) play the video from the thumbnail at the top, or (C) share the video to Instagram directly.

How to Add Audio/Music to Instagram Posts Using Spotify

You can also add music to Instagram posts from Spotify, whether it be a song, an album, or an entire playlist. Once again, this method is identical for both iPhone and Android devices. This is how it’s done:

  1. Open your “Spotify” app.
  2. Select the song, album, or playlist you want to add to Instagram.
  3. Tap the “three dots” on the right side of the song title.
  4. Scroll down and tap “Share.”
  5. Tap “Instagram Stories.”

Your Story will open with the song preloaded, and you can make any additional adjustments. When you’ve finished perfecting the video, post it to your Story. If your followers have Spotify accounts, they can open the song on Spotify.

Note: There was an issue adding Spotify songs to Instagram, but a recent update resolved the error. Ensure that your Instagram app is updated.

How to Add Music to an Instagram Post the “Old Way?”

Adding songs to your Instagram Story the ‘old way’ refers to how people used to add tunes before Instagram introduced the music feature. This is how it’s done:

  1. Start playing the song you want to post. It can be any song in your phone’s library or a music streaming app.
  2. Go to Instagram and open your Story while the song is still playing in the background.
  3. Start filming your Story by pressing the record button.
  4. Make any necessary adjustments to the Story. Post it by tapping “Your Story” in the bottom left corner.

When you play your Story, you’ll be able to hear the song in the background.  What’s great about this method is that you don’t have a 15-second time limit. You can record as many stories as you want.

What is Instagram Stories

This is a special feature that you don't have to pay for. It is built-in by default, any user can use it by using their phone's camera or the contents of the gallery. Sound accompaniment makes the posted material more attractive and interesting for potential subscribers.

You will be able to access the history immediately after installing the program and registering. The application allows you to publish personal photos, videos, advertise various products.

Stories icons are on the top of the main page. To view them, you just need to click on any of the icons.

Stories will be a great idea for:

  • posting news, announcements;
  • advertising of new products, informing about discounts for products;
  • attract visitors.

When figuring out how to add music to stories on Instagram, you should remember that you can view publications for no longer than 24 hours. After this period, they are transferred to the archive. How many people viewed the material can be seen at the very bottom of the calculation on the left.

Adding music to the story from the phone

Melodies make the posted information more attractive, allow you to convey mood to other users. To attach the desired composition, you should use the default application or use third-party methods.

Please note that the use of songs with obscene content is unacceptable. The violator's account can simply be blocked.

Built-in methods

You can insert sounds into stories using stickers. To do this, before laying out, you must select Music and fix the melody selected from the list.

Let's see how to do it right:

  • Open Instagram and click on the camera or story image.
  • Next, take a photo of the object or select a suitable photo from the storage on your phone.
  • Now click on the icon from the top row, add a sticker (rectangle with corner wrapped at the bottom).
  • Finally, select the desired position and insert the selected composition. Done, it remains only to post the publication.

Please note that this feature does not work on all models of communication devices and not in every country.

If the desired sticker is missing, add music to Instagram stories on Android and iOS using the built-in player.

Add procedure:

  • Activate the player on your mobile device.

  • Turn on the desired melody.
  • Now go to Insta, open Stories and record a video.
  • Done, it's time to start publishing.

Useful advice - do not set the volume level too high, in order to avoid deterioration in the quality of the recording. Various interference, noises and wheezing are unlikely to please subscribers.

Third party add-ons

When the add function is not available by default, it remains to use additional tools that make it possible to add audio and use special effects. Depending on which program you choose, certain options will open up for you.

Popular apps to add music to stories

Let's list the most common ones available. With their help, you can attach musical accompaniment to stories.

Storybeat

You can download this highly specialized add-on from the Play Store or the App Store.

  • After installing the application, provide it with access to the contents of the mobile device. Otherwise, it will not be able to function.
  • When the mini-program is activated, select the top menu column, from where two sections will become available: "Photo Library" and "Video".
  • After selecting the media, click the "Next" button.
  • Now wait for the video to load and tap on the plus at the bottom of the display (on the right).

Audio can be taken from the storage of the application itself, attached from the Mobile Gallery or using existing melodies in Storybeat:

  • After listening to the selected track and confirming the intention to use it, you need to select a certain fragment of the composition. That piece of the music track that will accompany your video. Nothing complicated, just move your finger along the dynamic blue strip until you find what you need. You can listen to the segments during the search by clicking on the black triangle, which is located lower in the center of the screen.
  • Having picked up the most beautiful moment (in your opinion), click "Save". Now the video should be reviewed again along with the musical arrangement, and then downloaded to your mobile device.
  • That's it, you can open Instagram and upload the finished post to stories.

Among the advantages of this program it should be noted: the simplicity of the interface, the high speed of processing materials, the variety of possibilities in working with multimedia.

Of the minuses, one cannot but mention the lack of special effects, the inability to record through a microphone, and the abundance of advertising information.

InShot

An excellent application that allows you not only to add music to Instagram stories from a playlist, but also to prescribe voice and music yourself:

  • Install the utility through the Play Store or the App Store.
  • Run the program and create a new file.
  • Open it. A menu will appear at the bottom of the display, in which you must select a button with a note to insert a melody.
  • From the opened block with possibilities, you have to stop at: load from the library, apply an effect or record your own voice.
  • When you select the first position, find the desired track on your mobile. Tap on the pencil and adjust the volume, use special effects if necessary.
  • After working with the settings, click on the checkmark at the bottom of the display and save the material. After a short advertisement during the conversion process, you can start uploading to your Instagram.

This application has many advantages:

  • no watermark;
  • small amount of promotional information;
  • the ability to record your voice and other sounds;
  • availability of overlaying several audio tracks at once;
  • you can not only apply music, but also add various effects to videos and photos (for example, cropping).

VivaVideo

Another fairly common add-on for creating interesting videos. With it, you can edit existing videos, organize a slide show, record video material and correct it at your discretion:

  • Download the program from the store and run it.
  • Select the "Edit" option from the main menu.
  • Find the file that needs processing, click on the "Music" button in the list that opens below.
  • Next, you should decide on the composition. You can download it from your own library or use one of the suggested options.
  • Set the slider in the place of the audio track from which the melody will sound in stories.
  • Once again, review what you have done and save the finished material.

At the end VivaVideo will offer to send the video to social networks and instant messengers. A very convenient feature, since among the proposed social networks there is the Instagram we need.

PicMusic

Now let's figure out how to add music to stories from iPhone using this application:

  • First, download and install the program.
  • Then launch the add-on and give it access to photos and videos. After picking up the images, click on the bird at the top right.
  • Click on the three parallel horizontal dashes icon and select "Add Music".
  • After that, allow the use of audio files by confirming "OK".
  • Find a suitable song, remember that it must be stored in the device's memory.
  • Set the playback start and end points. The duration of the melody cannot be more than 15 seconds.
  • Tap the icon again and select "Share".
  • Open the social photo network and go to the library.
  • From the files that open, select the desired slide show, make adjustments if necessary. Decide on the cover and click "Next".
  • Now a field has become available to you, in which you should specify the name and write hashtags.
  • It remains to confirm the manipulation of the "OK" key and share an interesting story with other users.

How to add music to Instagram stories using a photo editor

In an application like After Effects, you can create animated stories. Most often, with the help of animations to their blogs, celebrities attract the attention to present a new hit or album.

In this case, first of all, the visual part is formed, only then the sound is attached.

In the story, the material is laid out in the form of a regular video or image.

The single cover is usually done in Canva. But since this service does not allow adding musical accompaniment, various video editors are used to attach the melody, for example, InShot or VivaVideo.

How to attach via Screen Recorder

Nothing complicated. First, listen to the entire song, then open the image or video. Catch the moment you like in the song and activate the desired option. The next steps depend on your phone's operating system. Let's deal with this in more detail.

Adding to iPhone

Owners of devices with iOS 11 and later are definitely in luck. Their mobiles have the ability to record what is happening on the display. If there is no such function, perform the following series of actions:

  • go to the “Settings” item;
  • open "Management";
  • followed by "Setting Items" and "Screen Recording".

To overlay music on photos in Stories:

  • start any add-on with melodies and play the sound track;
  • open the selected image in one of the social networks, for example, VK;
  • now swipe up and tap "Screen Recording";
  • in half a minute you can publish the story.

If

and you are not satisfied with the red stripe and timer located at the top of the display, they can be removed using any available video editor.

Adding on Android

We have already found out how to add music to Instagram stories through the iPhone application. It remains to find out what Android owners should do.

For gadgets operating on such an OS, special programs will be required. The most common is "VideoShow: Movie maker &Editor":

  • First of all, download and install the add-on on your device.
  • Run it, in the main menu that opens, select "Video Editing".
  • Open the gallery and find the right video. Click Start.
  • The editor will allow you to trim video, optimize quality characteristics, etc.
  • From the list of proposed melodies, select the one you like and cut it to 15 seconds.
  • Activate the add option and save the corrected one by clicking on the floppy disk icon.
  • Done, all changes are saved, you can share the material with subscribers.

How to add music to Instagram stories: other ways

Among the additional methods of including musical compositions in stories, there are a couple more that are definitely worth paying attention to:

  1. Record a video clip to a melody that you like. To implement your plan, launch the player on a PC, mobile device or other gadget, log into Instagram and create a new post. A fairly simple process, its minus is extraneous interference, which significantly degrades the quality of the material.
  2. In addition to the applications described above, there are others that you can use to add music to Stories. For example, SEEZER Story Maker, Drool, Storeo for Instagram, etc.

To the question: is it possible to add music to stories, we gave an exhaustive answer in today's article. But what exactly to choose from the available tools depends on the individual preferences of the user and the technical capabilities of the devices he uses.

How to add music to stories using a third-party application

If the desired song is not in the Instagram database or music stickers are still not available to you, use a video editor, for example, the VN application. But first, download the desired song to your phone. You can do this with the help of Telegram bots, they allow you to download any music to your phone for free.

Several bots with which you can download a song to your phone:

  • Freemusicprobot
  • Fmusbot
  • Vkmusic_bot

IMPORTANT: Observe copyright. Instagram strictly monitors this and removes content in which music is used illegally. If you violate it again, the social network may even temporarily block your account. Therefore, in order not to get into an unpleasant situation, check the musical compositions for the type of license. We talked about this in more detail in our article “Copyright-Free Music for Instagram”.

How to add a song through the video editor app

Download the VN app (iOS, Android). Click "New Project" and add a video/photo. Next, insert the music, to do this, click on the note icon. Select "Sound Effects" or "Music" if you want to download songs from the app's built-in library. If you need to add a song from your smartphone, then go to "My Audio" and download music from iTunes, or add a room and import a song from your phone. If necessary, you can add several audio tracks to the VN, apply fading or appearing effects.

How to make stories with music using screen recording

In order not to download and understand third-party applications, you can make music stories using smartphone screen recording. To do this, turn on the desired music track and open the video or photo. All that remains is to enable screen recording on the desired fragment of the song.

How to activate the screen recording process:

1. For Android
The location of this function is determined by the phone manufacturer. Look for this option in your device (in the settings or lower the top curtain and find the function in the menu) or download a special third-party application, such as Super Screen Recorder.

2. For iOS
Go to "Settings" - "Control Center", add "Screen Recorder". Swipe the top right menu curtain, the entry icon will appear there. Click on it and the recording will start. Then cut the video using the phone's internal editor and post it to Instagram.

Creating music stories allows you to highlight your content among others in the feed, set the mood or make an accent. But try not to put music on every story, otherwise it will become boring for subscribers.
