But the instant messaging app isn't limited to text messages, and offers a way to connect you with a group of people either over voice or video. This is useful if you want to speak with multiple contacts at once — may be to discuss something important or just to know their well-being. Group calling on WhatsApp is available across platforms. So no matter whether you have an Android device or an iPhone, you can make group calls. Also, the chat app supports cross-platform group calls, which means you can speak with your friends regardless of the platform they are using.

Introduced back in July 2018, group calling on WhatsApp is an important and useful feature for a large number of people who don't want to understand how other group calling apps like Zoom or Google Duo can be used to make group calls. The ease that the Facebook-owned company offers through its group calling feature is indeed what has attracted various users. You can add a new participant to an existing group call or start a call with multiple members directly from your one of your group chats.

All this shows how group calling is an integral part of WhatsApp. But how can you make a group call? Here's our step-by-step guide on how to make a group call with WhatsApp. This guide provides you with steps for Android and iPhone. We've also distinguished parts to let you understand how you can make a group voice call and group video call with your contacts using WhatsApp. So, let's get started.

Before beginning with the steps, it's important to note that WhatsApp allows group calling with up to four participants at once. This means that you can't make a group call with more than three of your contacts on WhatsApp on any platform.

How to make group calls on WhatsApp for Android

  1. Open WhatsApp on your phone.

  2. Tap the Calls tab from the bar that includes tabs for Chats and Status.

  3. Now, hit the call button from the bottom-right corner of the screen.

  4. You'll get a list of contacts with whom you can connect through a WhatsApp call.

  5. Tap the New group call button.

  6. The app will now let you select your contacts from the list with whom you want to speak through a group call. Remember that you can add only three of your contacts for a group call.

  7. Now, you'll see circles of the contacts that you've selected for your group on top of the list.

  8. You can then choose between a video and voice call by tapping the phone and video camera button, respectively.

At any time during the call, you can also add new participants — as long as this is within the limit of four participants — by tapping the contacts icon from the top-right corner of the screen.

How to make group calls on WhatsApp for iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Calls section from the bottom bar that includes Status, Calls, Camera, and Chats sections.
  3. Now, press the call button from the top-right corner of the screen.
  4. A list will pop-up on your screen that will include all your WhatsApp contacts.
  5. You'll now need to press the New Group Call button that's available just above your WhatsApp contacts list.
  6. The app will now provide you with the list from where you can select participants for your group call. Just like Android, you can add only up to three of your contacts for a group call.
  7. Once you've selected participants for your group call, you can either make a voice call by tapping the phone button or a video call by tapping the video camera button.

You can, of course, add any additional participants to your group call — until the list reaches four participants — by tapping the contacts icon from the top-right corner of the screen.

WhatsApp also lets you make a group call directly from a group on both Android and iPhone. This can be done by following identical steps on both Android and iPhone. However, the contacts that you want to connect with through a group call need to be in your contact list.

How to make a group call on WhatsApp for Android and iPhone from within the group

  1. Open WhatsApp on your phone.
  2. Select a group from where you want to make a group call.
  3. Now, tap the call button from the top-right corner of the screen.
  4. A pop-up screen will slide up from the bottom from where you can select the contacts with whom you want to speak on the group call. You can pick up to three participants at once.
  5. After that, you can select either the video camera button to make a group video call or the phone button to make a group audio call.

WhatsApp also recently brought an update for the groups that have four or less members. That update made it easier for users to make group calls as it allowed a group audio call simply by tapping the phone button or a group video call by hitting the video camera button — just like how you can make an audio or video call to an individual on WhatsApp.

What is WhatsApp group calling?

WhatsApp has long supported voice and video calls and introduced group video chats in 2018. As we mentioned, you can make a group call with up to eight people simultaneously. Competitors like Google Duo offer up to 32.

Formerly, you needed to start a one-on-one voice or video call like normal on WhatsApp and then add multiple other participants to make it a group call. However, it's much easier nowadays.

How to make a WhatsApp group video call

It's worth noting that during any video call, you always have the option to turn off your video to revert to a voice call and/or mute your microphone. 

You need an existing WhatsApp group

To call a group, they need to be an existing WhatsApp group. To make a group, go to the Chats tab and tap 'New Group' at the top your chats. The group participants need to be in your contacts.

You can also tap the New Chat icon and then select New Group. 

Call the group

After you've created your group, or opened the group of people you want to video call, you'll need to tap the video icon in the top right corner. This will appear if you there are eight people or less in the group. Once you tap that, the group video call will begin.

If the group has more than eight people in it, you'll need to creat a room where you select up to seven other participants for the video call. In the group, tap on the call icon with the "+" in the top right corner and select your participants. If people in the group aren't in your contacts, they won't appear in this list. 

Once you have selected your participants, tap the blue video icon - you can also tap the phone icon if you just want voice. 

When participants receive a group video call, the incoming call screen shows the participants currently on the call.  

Add group participants to an existing call

If you want to start by placing a one-on-one call, this bit is for you. Just open the chat with the contact you want to voice call, then tap Voice call (phone icon) or Video call (camera icon).

After placing a one-on-one voice or video call, you will see an add participant button in the top right corner in the form of a person icon in a circle with a "+". Tap it to add more contacts to the call.

Group video calling on WhatsApp desktop

As a summary, you'll need the below for it to work though: 

  • The latest version of the WhatsApp desktop app (available for Windows PC and Mac)
  • An audio and microphone output device
  • A camera for video calls
  • An active internet connection on your phone and computer. You phone needs to be online to establish the call, but the call won't go through your phone.
  • Grant permission to WhatsApp desktop to access your computer's microphone and camera.

How to join a WhatsApp group video call

In July 2021, WhatsApp finally introduced the ability to join a group call, even after it’s started. "Joinable calls reduce the burden of answering a group call as it starts, and brings the spontaneity and ease of in-person conversations to group calling on WhatsApp," the company explained in a blog post.

Now, if you miss a group call when the phone rings, you can still join whenever you want. You can also drop-off and re-join so long as the call is still ongoing. WhatsApp has also created a call info screen so you can see who is already on the call, and who has been invited but not yet joined. If you simply don't feel like joining a group call, you can always hit "Ignore". But you can still join later, if you change your mind, from the calls tab in WhatsApp. 

Join an incoming group video call

  1. You’ll receive a notification when someone invites you to join a group video call.
    • If you can’t join, tap Ignore.
    • To open the call info screen, tap Join.
    • From the call menu, you can preview the call participants and other invitees.
  2. Tap Join to join the call.
  3. While on the call, tap Open to open the call info screen.
  4. Tap Add participant to add more contacts to the call.
  5. Tap Ring to send a notification to people who’ve already been invited.

Join a missed group video call

  1. Open WhatsApp, then tap the Calls tab.
  2. If the call is ongoing, tap the call you’d like to join.
    • This will open the call info screen.
  3. From the call menu, tap Join.

  • Go to the "Calls" section and press the button with the handset and the plus sign.
  • Press New Group Call
  • This will open your contact list. You can find the people you need by entering their names in the search box at the top of the screen. To add a person to a call, click on their name.
  • Then press the camera button to start a video call or the handset button to start an audio call. During a WhatsApp group call, you cannot change a video call to an audio call and vice versa, so decide in advance which option is preferable for you.

From a group chat

  • Go to the "Chats" section and open the desired group chat.
  • Press the handset button with the plus sign.
  • This will open the list of chat participants. To add a person to a call, click on their name.
  • Then press the camera button to start a video call or the handset button to start an audio call.

WhatsApp is now releasing an update that will allow you to initiate calls directly from group chats of up to four people. Right in the conversation, buttons will appear to start a video or audio call without intermediate steps. WhatsApp says that this feature is not yet available to all users.

From a one-on-one conversation

  • Go to the "Chats" section and open a chat with the right person.
  • Next, press the camera button to start a video call, or the handset button to start an audio call.
  • After starting a one-on-one conversation, you can add one or two more participants to it by clicking on the button with the silhouette of a person and a plus sign.
  • This action will open your contact list. You can find people using the search bar at the top of the screen. To add a person to a call, click on their name.
  • You may then see a pop-up window asking if you really want to add this person to the video conference. To confirm your decision, click Add.

WhatsApp group call on your phone, tablet, Android, computer or other device allows you to make both regular and video calls. Now the WhatsApp messenger allows you to join more than two people to a conversation at the same time, an excellent group communication function is implemented in the application itself and is available on all devices on which WhatsApp is installed. How many people can be in a WhatsApp group call? Up to four people - this is today, but I think more than four will be possible in the near future, since this has already been implemented in other messengers. Below we will show you several ways to make WhatsApp group calls and video calls on Android phone and other devices. The first way is the most convenient, and perhaps not, see below for other options.
- Open the WhatsApp application on your phone.
- As usual, we can make a call via whatsapp and a video call.
- After receiving an incoming call on another phone, you can add another interlocutor to WhatsApp. To do this, click on the corresponding button on the screen. See below in the screenshot the button for a group call in WhatsApp is highlighted.
- Next, select the contact that we want to add to the group call.

- Anyone from the group can add a new interlocutor in the same way.

The second method allows you to make group calls from the Calls tab.
- Open the "Calls" tab in the application, which usually shows the latest calls.
- Next, click on the button "New call".
- Next, press the button "New group call".
- Next, select contacts for a group call and click on the "Call" or "Video call" button.

The third way from a group chat, for those who are already in a group.
- Open the Whatsapp group you want to call.
- Next, click on the "Group call" button.
- Next, select contacts for a group call and click on the "Call" or "Video call" button.

Useful information about WhatsApp group calls.
- During a group video call, you or any other participant can turn off the video by simply clicking on the "Turn off camera" button.
- Please note that the quality of the call or video call will depend on the participant with the weakest internet connection.
- When you receive a group call, you will see "Whatsapp video call" on the screen and the participants who have already joined before.
- You cannot delete a contact participating in a group call, this contact needs to disconnect from the group call on its own.
- Attention! Among the participants in a group call to WhatsApp, there may be those contacts that are blocked by you, while you yourself or those who blocked you will not be able to add each other to groups.

Complete shit and trash. Who wants to add me to a group call, without my consent. And I can’t delete either a call or a fucking group. Whatsapp is screwed up. Not only have there been constant disconnections lately, they also do what they want, without the consent of customers. It looks like it's all about paying.
