So how can you increase your organic reach on Instagram? Here are the 10 powerful ways you can do that:

1. Find your optimal posting times

Even though Instagram uses an algorithmic timeline now, optimal posting times are still relevant as Sue B. Zimmerman, suggests posting when the majority of your audience is online:

It may take time to get a long-term understanding of your followers’ activity, but it’s important to make sure you’re posting when the majority of your audience is online.

If you are using an Instagram Business Profile, you can check your Instagram Insights to find out when your followers are most active by the day of the week and the time of the day.


Once you’ve identified your ideal posting times, you can also schedule Instagram posts ahead of time to help ensure you consistently post high-quality content.

2. Experiment with videos

Several studies have found that photos tend to get more overall engagement (i.e. likes and comments) than videos on Instagram. On first look, it might seem that photos are better than videos for engagement — and it could well be!

On closer examination, we might draw a different conclusion. News Whip studied the Instagram accounts of 31 news publishers and made an interesting discovery. While photos, on average, get more likes (and overall engagement) than videos, videos generate more comments than photos. In fact, videos, on average, received more than twice the amount of comments than photos!

It is not certain if the Instagram algorithm values likes and comments equally or one more than another. But since commenting requires more effort from a user than liking, it’s possible that the algorithm values comments more than likes and would rank posts with more comments higher than posts with more likes.

Last year, Instagram found that the video watch time on Instagram increased by more than 40 percent over a six-month period. At this growth rate, it could be great to experiment with videos to see if it increases your engagement and organic reach on Instagram.

3. Host contests or ask questions to encourage engagement

Asking questions or calling for an action is one of the fun ways to encourage your followers to interact with your Instagram posts. We found that hosting a giveaway contest is an effective way to engage our followers.

While giveaway contests usually generate more comments than usual posts, we try to give it a few months in between each contest to keep things fun and exciting.

Something that we do more often is asking a question in our Instagram posts. Several of our most-commented posts (excluding contest posts) are posts with a question such as this, this, and this.

4. Curate user-generated content

Brian Peters, our digital marketing strategist, grew our Instagram account following by about 500% (4,250 to 21,000) in under six months. His secret? User-generated content.

Curating user-generated content can encourage those users to engage with and share those content. Since the Instagram algorithm considers users’ relationships when ranking content on their feed, building relationships with your users through Instagram might also help your content rank higher on their feeds.

Apart from organic reach, Crowdtap found that user-generated content is 35 percent more memorable and 50 percent more trusted than traditional media and other non-user-generated content. This makes user-generated content a valuable strategy to try.

5. Tell Instagram Stories

In our State of Social Media 2016 report, we found that while 63 percent of marketers surveyed use Instagram, only 16 percent have created Instagram Stories. There’s a great opportunity to stand out before it gets too crowded!

Instagram Stories take a prominent position on the Instagram app — above the feed. This allows you to stay on top of your followers’ feed and grab more of their attention. If your followers view your Stories regularly, it could possibly even help your Instagram posts rank higher on their feeds.

It’s worth noting that the Stories are also ranked by an algorithm; possibly one very similar to the feed algorithm. Spend the time to craft great Stories to help them rank better.

6. Go live on Instagram

A similar “trick” is to go live on Instagram. When you use live video, you will appear right at the front of the Stories feed, assuming no one else is live at the same time. The “LIVE” logo also makes your profile photo more prominent in the Instagram app.

Social Media Examiner found that the more they went live on Facebook, the more their non-live content received exposure. Michael Stelzner said that one reason might be their brand is in front of their fans more often so the fans might go to their Page to see their content more — even if the fans don’t watch the live video.

This effect could play out on Instagram, too. Seeing your logo at the top of their feed might encourage your followers to check out your Instagram profile.

From our State of Social Media 2016 report, we concluded that live video has yet to hit mass adoption as only 27 percent of marketers surveyed had created live video content. While the percentage might be higher today, I believe live videos aren’t mainstream yet. So it’s another perfect way to stand out and deliver great content!

Use Instagram ads

This might sound a little counter-intuitive but Instagram ads can be an effective way to grow your organic reach.

If you have an Instagram Business Profile, you can promote your existing posts from within the Instagram app. (

So which post should you promote?

Here’s a quick way to pick a good post to promote:

  1. Go to your Instagram Insights on the mobile app (tap on the profile tab and then the bar chart icon).
  2. Tap “See More” under the “Top Posts” section.
  3. Tap on “Impressions” at the top (a pop-up should apply to let you adjust your stats filters).
  4. For the first filter, you can choose “All”, “Photos”, or “Videos” according to your preference.
  5. For the second filter, select “Engagement”.
  6. For the third filter, select “7 days”.
  7. You will see your top posts by engagement for the last seven days. From there, you can pick a post to promote.

As these posts have received the most engagement from your followers, they would likely also resonate with the people you promote to (assuming you have targeted people like your followers).

8. Post less

When explaining social media algorithms, Michael Stelzner encouraged marketers to re-think your posting strategy.

Rethink is the keyword here. Rethink your posting strategy on social media – Less is actually more!

Sue B. Zimmerman also gave a similar advice for marketers who want to overcome the Instagram algorithm.

If you truly want to connect with your audience, it’s better to share one fabulous photo instead of 20 mediocre images. So next time, before you hit post, take a moment and consider how this content contributes to your brand, and does it effectively encourage engagement from your followers.

I believe this is about the allocation of your resources and time. Instead of publishing 20 posts a week, use the same resources and time for just one or two posts and make them great.

Quality content that is relevant to your followers has a higher chance of eliciting a positive response from your followers. In turn, this can help your posts rank higher on your followers’ feed.

9. Create specifically for Instagram

One way to create quality content is to create content specifically for Instagram. Instagram, being a very visual platform, has a greater focus on the photo or video itself than the text. So a post that would do well on Instagram is probably different from one that would do well on Twitter or Facebook.

For smaller social media teams or solo social media manager, it can be challenging to always create unique content for each platform. Crossposting and repurposing content from other platforms can be great, too. If you are doing that, it’d be best to craft specific caption for each social media platform as your followers likely follow you for a different reason for each of the platforms.

My gut feeling here is that being a great Instagram user will help you grow your organic reach over time. That includes:

  • Thanking people for commenting on your posts
  • Exploring other people’s profiles, engaging with their posts, and building a relationship with them

10 Ways To Improve Your Instagram

It’s safe to say that Instagram has become a
major player in social media. Having a beautiful, engaging and unique Instagram account can enhance your business and can create amazing opportunities. So how do you make your Instagram stand out among the crowd? It’s not an easy feat, but today, Taylor is sharing 10 tips that have worked for her and for our team here at Glitter Guide.

1. Choose A Style.

One thing that developed for me over the last few years is creating more of a style to my Instagram feed. Before this, I was simply posting any picture I took that I liked. I wasn’t really thinking about the entire look and feel of my grid. For some people, this isn’t something they care about—especially because most people are only looking at your individual image as it appears in their feed. However, if you’re portraying a brand, whether it’s for yourself or a business, it’s important to think about the overall vibe you want to create with your Instagram grid.

Some people take this very seriously and only post specific photos that are their style or work in their grid (think colors, angles, mood). I fall into it loosely. I want to have my feed feel and look cohesive and beautiful, but I don’t like to get too strict on myself where it stops me from just being authentic and spontaneous. I like to edit with only a handful of filters (more on that later). I like muted colors that feel soft and light. I also like to have a mix of promotional things, but also things that are personal and that I like.

2. Have Lots To Choose From.

One thing that I’ve learned over the past few years of using Instagram is that having a lot of photos to choose from of one thing can be so helpful. It can be a tad annoying when you’re out and about and quickly trying to snap things, but it pays off in the end. It allows you to see things from different angles and it gives you more options when playing with the image in your overall feed. I will take about 5 to 10 pictures of one thing that all look slightly different. Just remember to erase any that you never plan to use after or you will end up with that terribly annoying “storage is full” alert on your phone.

3. Edit Your Photos.

This is something that has become like an art form. Having a beautiful image is one thing, but editing it is what really makes the image POP! First you will need apps that can help you. My favorites are: Afterlight, VSCO and A Color Story. Here’s why:

Afterlight:
This is where I typically start. I like to use Afterlight for cropping, adding brightness, contrast and sometimes sharpening and playing with shadows. You can use the other apps for these things too, but I happen to like Afterlight the most for it. Once I do that, I will use the other two for more editing.

A Color Story:
I love A Color Story for the amazing color ranges it has for editing photos, and I am so stoked Glitter Guide was able to create our own custom collection of filters. Our collection of 14 filters are all very light, glowy and will give your photos a pastel effect (like you see in the photos in this post). We also have some that will give your photos a bright pink or orange glow, too. My favorite filters are the “EVELYN,” “CASSIDY” and “VALERIE.”

VSCO:
VSCO is also an amazing app for editing the color of your photos. I use its filters when one of the #glitterguidexacolorstory ones don’t work well on a photo of mine. I love “A4” and “A6.” I also love VSCO for planning out my photos in the grid. See below:

4. Plan Your Photos.

This is something I only started doing a year ago and it’s great if you’re looking to create a more curated grid. I blame my photographer friends for getting me addicted to planning out my next few photos—it’s an obsession. However, like I mentioned before, I am trying to allow myself to sometimes not be so picky about it so I can also still be real and genuine and not too artsy. I love that on some people’s feeds, but for my account, I like to have a mix. VSCO is great for uploading your photos and seeing them in a grid format. I use that for my personal feed. For Glitter Guide, we use PLANOLY, which is awesome. We can plan ahead, schedule, write our captions and see analytics for our account. It’s really great when you have a social media team and want to work together.

When planning out photos in your grid, look for what appeals to your eye. For me, that means never repeating the same style photo too close to one another. I also don’t want it to feel too busy. So if you have a picture of flowers, maybe you wait until it’s out of sight before you post another one. Or maybe it’s that the next one you pick looks very different from the other one and it won’t matter, but for me, this is something I strive for when possible. This can be tricky when you have to post something for work or really want to post something that is time sensitive. Instagram is still meant to be fun, so don’t sweat it too much. Just post it. You can always delete it later if you want.

5. Engagement Is Key.

If you’re looking to really grow your following, then engagement is critical. Especially now that the algorithm is in place. People want to feel a part of your community. They want to feel like they know you and have you acknowledge their voice. That means that when you can, you should reply to comments, like other people’s photos and comment on them. This will not only have you form a closer relationship with your followers, but it will also mean more of your photos will actually be seen by them. This is something I really struggle with. I want to be connected to my audience, but I don’t want to feel glued to my phone. So, it’s a work in progress for me.

Timing is also a big component now. There are ideal times for your specific audience for you to post things if you want more engagement on your photo. Again, this is something I do loosely because I don’t want to feel totally tied down by my account. However, if you’re a business or really striving for a larger, more engaged audience, then this is something you should pay attention to.

Call things to action with your audience. Ask them questions. Be involved. Have them comment with things or tag people. These can all help grow your engagement and audience.

6. Take Photos In The Camera App.

I don’t like snapping photos in the Instagram app or using Instagram filters (however, I’m sure they have vastly improved). I like to use the camera app on my phone. I also make sure that I get the very best lighting I can. Natural light is better for my preferred style—I never use the flash. It’s also great to remember to use the tools in the camera app, like focusing and adding or removing light from the shot by tapping on the photo.

7. Stay Consistent.

I think that posting consistently and around the same times is really helpful for improving your engagement. It can vary from person to person, but typically I think posting daily is important for staying in your audience’s view. That way they don’t have to check out your profile to see if you updated. I also think posting 1 to 3 times a day is ideal for personal brand and maybe more if you’re a brand that has a lot of content. Just make sure to keep them separated and not all at once. I like to do one in the morning, afternoon and evening. Sometimes, I will only get to one and that’s OK. Again, I’m trying to remain somewhat flexible.

8. Follow Content You Love.

I’m working on cleaning up my list of who I follow. It’s not a personal thing, it’s more the fact that it’s harder and harder to see photos from people I really want to see. So, it’s important to clean out my list to people’s pictures that really inspire me. It also helps drown out a lot of noise for me and makes Instagram more enjoyable.

9. Use Hashtags.

I have a love/hate relationship with hashtags, but they do really work. If done correctly, it helps to showcase your photos to specific audiences and it gives you the chance to get your photo featured by a larger Instagram account. This can help grow your base of followers. Some of Glitter Guide’s popular ones are: “#flashesofdelight” “#GGathome” “#GGLocalGems” and “#thatsonecoolride.”

Hashtags also help people know if the photo was edited with something (#glitterguidexacolorstory), if it’s part of a group and also if it’s sponsored.

10. Don’t Follow Rules.

I know this makes no sense after I just listed a bunch of “rules” for you to follow, but ultimately Instagram is meant to be fun. If you turn it into a tool you’re simply using to gain followers from and only follow all these strict guidelines, it will lose its magic. I try to maintain a balance of using strategies and guidelines to improve and grow my account, but then also make sure to check in and see if I am being genuine, having fun and feeling inspired. In the end, those are the things that will really help improve your Instagram.

8 easy ways to upgrade your Instagram account

Articles are published daily on how to increase user engagement and conversion. To keep up with all the trends, you need a lot of time and effort. That's why the Buffer App has collected the results of 20 different studies for you and compiled them into 8 simple and actionable tips.

According to the Pew Research Center (data collected in the United States), the largest age group among adult Instagram users are young people 18-29years.


The most popular age category in Russia was adults 25-34, the second most popular - 18-24.

If your target audience is aged 25-49, then Instagram can be a great platform to reach out to a potential client and increase engagement rates.

Here are some tips on what kind of content you need to post in order to “become your own” for this audience:

1) Show what makes you different : offer your audience something that others don't, and you will see how Instagram users will start listening to you.

2) Get in the crowd to stand out: Instagram users often post quality and visually pleasing content. To match, do not forget about quality.

3) Seize the moment: teens and adults describe Instagram as: relevant (42%), friendly (40%) and trendy (39)%). They expect similar content from brands too, try to match!


2. Consistency over quantity

Often the question is: “How often do you post on Instagram?”

There is no universal answer to it; different analytical agencies provide different data.

However, there is one simple rule: it is better to have one or two high-quality publications per day than 10 mediocre ones. nine0003

It is important to evaluate your strengths and understand how often you are ready to post high-quality content. Also, users who are not used to constant posts may get tired and start ignoring posts or, even worse, start unfollowing you.

Recent studies show that users spend almost a quarter of their time on Instagram in Stories. Iconosquare says that since the introduction of the Stories section, brand content engagement rates have plummeted.

Adapt to the changing needs of your audience. High-profile brands like McDonalds, IBM, and Forever 21 post "stories" at least once a week.

According to statistics, a user responds to 1 out of 5 “stories” of a brand in direct.

5. Use hashtags and geolocation

Hashtags and geolocation help other users discover your post. Keep them in mind if you want to increase audience engagement with your content. nine0003

A study by Simply Measured showed that posts that include both hashtags and geolocation get more likes and views.

According to TrackMaven research, 9 is the optimal number of hashtags for a post. But do not overdo it: for abuse, a shadowban can be imposed. This means that your post will not show up in hashtag searches.

Try to find out what type of content your target audience likes best: photos or videos. Track user engagement for each.

Videos on Instagram have almost caught up with traditional photo content in popularity. Therefore, it is difficult to say what will give high engagement rates. Try to find out what is interesting for your subscribers: track likes and comments under videos and photos.

8. Description length does not affect engagement

According to a study by Sprout Social, 138-150 is the optimal number of characters in the description under the photo. This number is taken for a reason, because Instagram only shows the first three lines of the description, and hides the rest under the cut.
