How to Hide Your WhatsApp 'Last Seen' Status From Specific Contacts

In a new privacy-centric update released in August 2022, WhatsApp has added the ability for users to adjust the visibility of their "Last Seen" status on a contact-by-contact basis. Keep reading to learn how it's done.

As regular WhatsApp users will know, the "Last Seen" status of a contact you're in conversation with sits atop the conversation thread, informing you when that contact last opened and was active on the app.

Previously, WhatsApp let you disable your Last Seen status so that other contacts couldn't see when you were last online, but the setting's options were limited to "Everyone," "My Contacts," and "Nobody," and there was no way to make exceptions for individual contacts.

The good news however is that WhatsApp is switching things up by adding the option "My Contacts Except..." which lets you select specific contacts so that they don't see when the last time was that you were active on the messaging network.

Here's how to make the change to your privacy settings in the WhatsApp app for mobile.

  1. In WhatsApp, tap the Settings tab (the cog icon) at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap Account -> Privacy.

  3. Tap Last Seen.
  4. Select My Contacts Except....
  5. Choose the people from your contacts list that you want to hide your Last Seen status from.
  6. When you've finished selecting contacts, tap Done in the top-right corner of the screen.

If you don't see the new option in the Last Seen menu, make sure you've updated WhatsApp to the latest version, then try again.

How to Hide Your Online Status on WhatsApp

  • You can hide online status on WhatsApp — known as Last Seen — in your Privacy settings.
  • Choose whether only your contacts or nobody should see your Last Seen status.
  • You can also choose to exclude certain people from seeing your Last Seen status.

If you use WhatsApp regularly, chances are you've spotted the login status next to the name of some of your contacts.

Though WhatsApp makes your online status visible to everyone by default, you can easily change it.

WhatsApp online status

WhatsApp online status allows users to see the last time their contacts were active on the platform and whether they are currently using the app.

When someone is online, it doesn't necessarily mean they've seen your message — it simply means they're currently using the app.

Last Seen refers to the last time the person used WhatsApp and also doesn't mean that they have seen your most recent message. The only way to tell if someone has seen your message is the blue check marks beside the message.

If you don't want your WhatsApp contacts to know your Last Seen or online status, you can easily hide your status from everyone, make it available to only your contacts, or exclude certain contacts from seeing it through the app's settings.

Note: When you hide your own WhatsApp online status, you also can't view other people's statuses.

The steps to hide your Last Seen or online status on Whatsapp are simple:

1. Open WhatsApp on your phone and head to the settings.

2. Open the account settings, and then head to the privacy settings.

3. Go to the Last Seen settings.

4. Tap either My Contacts, My Contacts Except, or Nobody to choose how you want to hide your Last Seen status.

Here's the full guide on how to hide your online status on WhatsApp.

6. You have two options to hide your online or Last Seen status — you can choose for only My Contacts to see your status or for Nobody to see your status.

You can also choose My Contacts Except and select people from your contacts list who you don't want to see your "Last Seen" status. Then, tap Done in the top right corner on iPhone or the check mark in the bottom right corner on Android.

Note: While hiding your Last Seen means people won't be able to see when you were last online, it will still show them when you're currently online.

7. Once you've made a selection, your online or Last Seen status will be visible to just your contacts, no one at all, or the contacts you didn't exclude, depending on your selection.

By default, your status is only visible to those in your address book. If you do not change any settings, then the stories will be available only to a certain circle of people. In this case, you can change your status display settings:

  • The status can be shown to certain people.
  • The status may not be shown to certain people.

This option is selected at the time of creating the status before the material is uploaded to the messenger database. Another feature of the feature is that the creator sees everyone who has viewed his stories. The viewing time is also indicated, so the activity of users can be easily monitored. Sometimes users are faced with the question of how to hide viewing someone's status.

How to hide your status in Whatsapp

In Whatsapp every friend can see when we were last logged into the app and we were active. However, there is a way to hide in Whatsapp, thanks to which none of your friends will check when we last used the communicator.

Don't feel like talking and don't want to reply to Whatsapp messages? Your friends know when you last used Whatsapp, even if you haven't read their messages. This is because our profile shows information about when we were last signed into the app and active. Even if you don't read individual messages, a friend can check when you last used Whatsapp after entering your profile.

All you need to do is open a conversation window with your chosen friend in the Whatsapp application and display the information in the top bar (just below the name) "Seen".

Here you will find the date and time when your friend opened the Whatsapp app last time. Similarly, friends can see when we last used Whatsapp. Fortunately, it can be turned off and hidden information about when we were last seen.

Hide information about when you last saw each other on Whatsapp

In the privacy settings, we can disable the display of information about when we last saw each other on Whatsapp at any time. How to do it? It's simple. Launch the Whatsapp app, then click on the three dots icon on the top right corner.

Select an option to access the main settings (“Settings”) from the drop-down menu. After going to the settings, go to the tab "Account". Here you can find options related to privacy, security, account verification, etc. Select tab "Privacy".

In this section, you can configure different types of options related to the visibility of personal information. Don't let the "Status" block fool you - it is responsible for the visibility of text and graphic statuses that you publish in the "Status" tab, and not in the visibility status. To hide information about when we last saw, tap the Visited field at the top, then select the option "No one".

When "Nobody" is selected, no one will be able to see when you last used Whatsapp. However, you must remember that this setting works both ways. From now on, we will also not be able to check when our friends were last available.
