How to Export WhatsApp Chats to PC via PDF or Email [2022]

While WhatsApp lets us save our entire app data to Google Drive or iCloud, it doesn’t let us export dedicated conversations easily. In this post, I will let you know how to export WhatsApp chats on iPhone or Android like a pro with some other tips.

Step 1: Export chats in a TXT format

At first, you can just launch WhatsApp on your device and go to the conversation that you wish to export. Now, tap on the three-dot icon from the top to select the “Export Chat” option on WhatsApp. In the newer versions, it would be listed under More > Export Chat instead.

This will provide different options to export the chats as a TXT file. You can select a preferred mode to save the TXT file on the device or can just upload it to Google Drive to easily share it.

Step 2: Export WhatsApp chats to PDF

Once you have shared the exported chats to Google Drive, you can access it on your PC and download the document. Now, simply open the WhatsApp chat on MS Word to view the conversation. How to export a chat to WhatsApp without third-party applications

Making a copy of a chat is very easy:

    • Enter the selected dialog and tap on the three dots in the upper right corner. The chat settings will open.
    • Select More - Export Chat.
    • Decide if you will copy media files - with photos, videos and audio recordings, the resulting file will weigh more than just text.

In some countries, it is no longer possible to export WhatsApp chats directly from the application. This happened after the American company Blackberry sued Facebook because it saw violations of its patent rights in the group's applications. Blackberry won the case, which led to the removal of this feature. If you are in Russia, then everything will work for you - nevertheless, we suggest considering alternative methods for exporting chats and other data from WhatsApp.

    Android alternative: Google Drive backup

Android backup can be obtained using Google Drive.

    • To do this, go to WhatsApp settings and click "Chats".
    • Open the Chat Backup option. Here you can set up automatic creation of copies at regular intervals. In addition, you can also make backups manually using the "Backup" button.

    • You can then use Google Drive to restore the chat backup and open it on your smartphone.

You may have heard that you can save a chat to WhatsApp . However, not everyone understands how this is done. And you can do this:

    • by saving the chat to Google Drive. To do this, you will need to create an account on the Google service and link it to the WhatsApp application;
    • saving the chat on the device itself. The archive file will be located in the folder: /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases.

Although chats are automatically archived to local storage (that is, to the phone or tablet itself) by default every day, you can do it manually at any time.

    Export WhatsApp chat

However, you can not only save chats, but also transfer them from one place to another. Chat is exported to WhatsApp as follows:

    • you need to find the following file in the /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases folder: msgstore-YYYY-MM- DD.1.db.crypt8 and copy it to external media. Here YYYY means the year the archive was created, MM is the month, and DD is the day, respectively. Then transfer the archive to a new device and run the messenger on it. If a phone number has already been linked to the specified account, WhatsApp will ask itself if it is necessary to restore the archive with correspondence. We must agree;
    • you can also find the file with correspondence on Google Drive and transfer it to a new device in the same way.

Before you can restore the archive with correspondence, you need to log out of your WhatsApp account and log in again. If you plan to use the messenger on a new device, then it is better to first insert an SD card into it, and only then proceed with installing the application. As you can see, exporting a chat to WhatsApp is not such a complicated matter as it might seem at first glance. But now you can not worry about the safety of your correspondence, even if you mistakenly delete the entire chat history.

What is chat export to WhatsApp and how to do it

Backup is a great way to save all your important information on some digital medium. So, copies of correspondence in WhatsApp should be systematically saved so that it is possible to return the lost data. Further in the text, several methods will be presented on how to save messenger chats on a smartphone and not only.

    WhatsApp chat export

Perhaps the most reliable way is to copy all the messages from the dialogs yourself. This is done quite easily, it is only important to be able to handle the file manager of the smartphone. However, even if you have difficulties with this, you can connect your mobile phone to your computer and view all the files through Windows Explorer. So, here's what you need to do:

    1. Open the smartphone's root directory in the file manager.
    2. Enter the WhatsApp folder.
    3. Next, open the "Databases" directory.
    4. Copy all files from there to another medium.

Now, if you decide to change your smartphone, you can easily return all WhatsApp correspondence. All you have to do is place the copied data in the same folder on the new device. It is worth noting that in order to restore all chats, you will need to log out and log in again. Then, at startup, the program will ask if you want to restore the data.

How do I save WhatsApp messages to my computer?

The previous method is good because the backup files take up little disk space, but there is one significant drawback - they are encrypted. This means that it will not be possible to open them on a computer, respectively, you cannot familiarize yourself with the contents. Only WhatsApp can read the DB.CRYPT8 format.

There is another way that will allow you to save all messages from chats to your computer for later viewing. However, the other side of the coin will be observed here - all downloaded files cannot be opened in the messenger.

    1. Launch the app on your smartphone.
    2. Go to the chat whose conversation you want to save.
    3. Click on the "More" button, which looks like three vertical dots.
    4. Select "More" from the menu that appears.
    5. Select Export Chat from the additional list of options.

Immediately after that, a dialog box will appear in which you will need to select an email client. When sending a message, enter your own email address in the "Recipient" field. As a result, all messages from the correspondence will come to it and you can view them.

How to keep whatsapp messages when changing phone?

The previous method will not allow you to return all dialogs when you change smartphone. There is another way to do this, however, it involves having a memory card in the device and enabling the corresponding option in the smartphone, when activated, all application backup stores are stored on an external drive.

    Saving correspondence on Android

To save all messages when changing the device to Android, you must perform the following steps:

    1. Launch WhatsApp.
    2. Open additional options.
    3. Select "Settings" from the list.
    4. Open "Chats" from the list of sections.
    5. Select "Backup".
    6. Click on the green "Backup" button.

Now, to transfer all the dialogs to another phone, you need to move the memory card to it, start WhatsApp, log into your account and confirm data recovery.

    Saving correspondence on iPhone

Transferring SMS from dialogs to iPhone is practically no different, only instead of a memory card it is important to have an iCloud account.

    1. Start the messenger.
    2. Open its settings.
    3. Enter the "Chats" section.
    4. Press the "Copy" button.
    5. Scroll down the page and click "Make a copy".

After that, you can remove WhatsApp from your old iPhone and install it on a new one. When you first log into your account, the program will offer to restore all copies of your data.

The ability to create a copy of your chat and move it to cloud storage is in the application itself. You can choose to use either storage from Yandex or Google (well, or iCloud for owners of iOS devices) for this. The instructions for them will be exactly the same.

The only condition is that in order to transfer a backup of your chat history, you will need to select a storage associated with your device. And, of course, you, in principle, must be registered in at least one of the repositories.

If these conditions are met, you can proceed to action:

    1. Launch WhatsApp.
    2. Go to the list of chats and select the one you want to export from among them.
    3. Then click on the three dots at the top of the screen.
    4. Select "More" from the menu that appears.
    5. Then the item "Export chat".
    6. Next is the option "Include media files", you need to check it if you want to save not only the correspondence itself, but also the videos, audio, photos and geolocations attached to it. If you are only interested in textual information, select the "No files" option.
    7. You will then be prompted to select the storage where you want to save copies of the chats; choose your option.
    8. This will launch the vault client, where you will need to click "Upload".

It remains only to wait for the end of the download.

To make sure that everything was done correctly, you can go to the "Files" section of your repository and check if new files have appeared there.

It is worth noting that if during the transfer you selected the option "Include media files", then they will be stored separately from the correspondence itself.

    Mail

Another option to export a chat from WhatsApp is to send it by mail. This feature is also included in the app. In this case, they will come to your mailbox in the form of TXT files with attached pictures, video files, etc.

This method is perfect for those who do not use cloud storage, but want the correspondence to be at hand and at the same time reliably protected from loss. All you need is a registered mailbox in any email or social network.

No matter where you send your chats, the instructions are almost identical. And here's what you'll need to do:

    1. Run the application.
    2. Find the chat you need.
    3. Click on the button with three dots in the corner of the screen.
    4. Select "More".
    5. Then "Chat export".
    6. Specify whether you want to send media files.
    7. Then, among the options, select the mail service you want to use. In our case, this is Gmail mail.
    8. Next, you will need to enter your email address.
    9. Click the "Submit" button.

This completes the export of correspondence. It remains only to check whether the letter has arrived. Sometimes the letter comes without the text of messages, but only with media files. In this case, just repeat everything described above again.

As you can see, this method is not very different from the previous one. The initial steps of the instructions are completely identical. There are only a few differences after you select a shipping method.

Transferring files from the application folder

As you remember, WhatsApp stores all your correspondence on your own device. Therefore, you can find this folder at any time and simply copy its contents, thereby making a copy of the chats manually. Here's how to do it:

    1. Open File Explorer (it should be installed on your phone by default).
    2. Locate the "WhatsApp" folder in your system's memory.
    3. Now change to the "Databases" directory.
    4. In this directory, you need to find a file whose name starts with "msgstore.db" and mark it with a long press.
    5. Then click on the three dots at the top of the screen.
    6. You will see a menu in which select the option "Copy to ...".
    7. It remains only to select the location where you want to copy this file and click the "Copy" button.

Keeping both copies on the same device is not a good idea, so it would be logical to assume that you want to save the file somewhere else. To do this, you can either transfer the file to the inserted SD card, or connect the phone to the computer and transfer the files already through the computer.

This option for exporting files is considered the simplest, but it has a couple of disadvantages:

    1. Firstly, you will not have such a “luxury” as opening the exported chat, since the file has its own format, and even encrypted. All you can do with it is keep it as a backup.
    2. Secondly, multimedia attachments are not saved here, only text will be available to you.

But for security reasons, it is better to copy especially important correspondence in several ways, then you will definitely not lose it.

    Using WhatsApp Recovery

WhatsApp Recovery is a free PC application that allows you to backup all WhatsApp data and transfer it to any available device or media. It is used only for the iOS version of WhatsApp.

Here's what you need to do to transfer files with it:

    1. To get started, download the application from the official website and install it on your PC.
    2. Run the program after installation.
    3. Please wait while the program downloads all additional files and updates.
    4. Then connect your iPhone to your computer with a USB cable.
    5. After that, click the "Restore" button on the application screen.

The backup will be immediately transferred to the Documents directory on your computer. All files will be transferred, including multimedia.

This method is a kind of alternative to the file transfer option for iOS. By the way, with the help of WhatsApp Recovery you can transfer files from iOS not only to PC, but also to Android.
