Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff.

We were all stupid once. So, there’s no shame in admitting that we might have a ton of silly Facebook posts from when we started using the social network. We might not want everyone to see them, so Facebook lets you archive or delete them in bulk.

Before we get started, the bulk delete/archive functionality is currently only available on Facebook’s mobile apps (Android, iOS, and Lite). So, make sure you have one of the versions before you start.

The procedure for deleting old posts is similar for all three apps. So that’s a bonus. Here’s how you can do it:

Deleting or archiving old Facebook posts

All archived or deleted posts will show up as labels in Your Posts sections. You can tap those labels to see your archived or deleted posts.

Facebook will retain your posts in the recycle bin for 30 days in case you deleted a post by mistake, and want to restore it. It’s a bummer that there’s no option to bulk delete posts on Facebook’s desktop site. Hopefully, the company will roll out this feature soon. Till then, you can hide all of your sins under the carpet through mobile apps.

How do I permanently delete my Facebook account?

What happens if I permanently delete my Facebook account?

You won't be able to reactivate your account

Your profile, photos, posts, videos, and everything else you've added will be permanently deleted. You won't be able to retrieve anything you've added.

You'll no longer be able to use Facebook Messenger.

You won't be able to use Facebook Login for other apps you may have signed up for with your Facebook account, like Spotify or Pinterest. You may need to contact the apps and websites to recover those accounts.

Some information, like messages you sent to friends, may still be visible to them after you delete your account. Copies of messages you have sent are stored in your friends' inboxes.

If you use your Facebook account to log in to Oculus, deleting your Facebook account will also delete your Oculus information. This includes your app purchases and your achievements. You will no longer be able to return any apps and will lose any existing store credits.

Pages that only you control will also be deleted. If you don’t want your Page to be deleted, you can give someone else full control of your Page. You’ll then be able to delete your account without deleting the Page.

What if I don't want all my content deleted, but I want to take a break from Facebook?

You can take a break from Facebook and temporarily deactivate your account. When you temporarily deactivate your account:

People won't be able to see or go to your Facebook profile.

Your photos, posts and videos won't be deleted.

You can still use Facebook Messenger. Your profile picture will still be visible in your conversations and people will still be able to search for you by name to send you a message. You will continue to appear to friends on Facebook in places where they can message you.

You will not be able to use your Facebook account to access Oculus Products or your Oculus information.

Pages that only you control will also be deactivated. If your Page is deactivated, people can’t see your Page or find your Page if they search for it. If you don’t want your Page to be deactivated, you can give someone else full control of your Page. You’ll then be able to deactivate your account without deactivating the Page.

You can choose to come back whenever you want.

How do I permanently delete my account?

Before deleting your account, you may want to log in and download a copy of your information (like your photos and posts) from Facebook, and a copy of your Oculus information if you use your Facebook account to log in to Oculus. After your account has been deleted, you won't be able to retrieve anything you've added.

To permanently delete your account:

Classic mobile browser experience

Tap in the top right of Facebook.

Scroll down and tap Settings.

Scroll down to the Your Facebook Information section and tap Account Ownership and Control.

Tap Deactivation and Deletion, and select Delete Account.

Tap Continue to Account Deletion and select Delete Account.

Updated mobile browser experience

Scroll down and tap Settings.

Scroll down to the Your Facebook Information section and tap Account Ownership and Control.

Tap Open.

Tap Deactivation and deletion, and select Delete account.

Can I cancel my account deletion?

If it's been less than 30 days since you initiated the deletion, you can cancel your account deletion. After 30 days, your account and all your information will be permanently deleted, and you won't be able to retrieve your information.

It may take up to 90 days from the beginning of the deletion process to delete all the things you've posted. While we're deleting this information, it's not accessible to other people using Facebook.

Copies of your information may remain after the 90 days in backup storage that we use to recover in the event of a disaster, software error, or other data loss event. We may also keep your information for things like legal issues, terms violations, or harm prevention efforts. Learn more about our Privacy Policy.

How to delete your Facebook page

Briefly and clearly consider the questions:

  • How to get out of Facebook
  • Will it be possible to restore page
  • Which data will be deleted and which will not
  • Should I delete my page
  • What are the options

Attention! The Facebook page is permanently deleted. It cannot be restored. This is a responsible step. Deleting a page means saying goodbye to it, destroying it completely, with no hope of returning.

Keep in mind that by deleting the page, you will not delete your correspondence - your sent messages will remain with everyone you wrote to. And deleting other data, such as your comments on other pages, can take up to 90 days. Therefore, by deleting the page, you will not solve any momentary problem if it is related to messages that you carelessly sent, or comments that you left somewhere.

If you want to temporarily delete a page, do not delete it, but deactivate it ("Settings - Account Management - Edit - Deactivate Account"). See how to do it here: Deactivating an account instead of deleting it.

How to delete a page? Step by step instructions

The page is permanently deleted from Facebook! It cannot be restored! You don't hide it for a while, you delete it permanently!

Log in to your page with your login and password. If there is no access, you will have to restore it.

Here is a direct link to delete:

Start deleting a page from Facebook

You can also find the page deletion yourself. Open "Help Center" (through the question mark at the top right of the blue bar), then "Manage your account - Deactivate or delete your account - How to permanently delete your account." After that, find the link in the text "... if you want to permanently delete your account, log in and tell us about your decision" - this is it.

You will be asked if you really want to delete your Facebook page. This is your last chance to change your mind. If you definitely decided to delete, press "Delete account":

You will be asked for the page password to confirm deletion. Enter it and click "Delete account" again. The site can also request a captcha (character set from an image).

A message will appear that the page is deactivated (hidden and not visible to anyone), and after 30 days it will be permanently deleted. If you go to the page with your login and password during these 30 days, it can still be restored. After that, nothing can be done, the page will disappear forever.

How to delete a page on Facebook if there is no access?

You will first have to restore access, because you cannot delete a page without any rights (that is, without being able to enter it). This can only be done by the page owner. And if you cannot enter the page, how will Facebook distinguish you from an outsider? Use the link "Forgot your account?" on the Facebook home page to regain access to your email address or mobile phone number. Usually this link is at the top, just below the place where you enter the password to enter the site.

Should the page be deleted?

Arguments for:

  • Facebook takes your time.
  • Facebook collects data about you in order to serve ads and possibly share it with third parties.

Arguments against:

  • Your friends and acquaintances will still remain on Facebook.
  • By deleting a page, you won't prove anything to anyone. Nobody cares.
  • The Facebook page will still be useful to you, so it's better to leave it.
  • It often happens that people soon change their mind and want to restore the page. Sometimes the next day, sometimes a year later. But if more than 30 days pass, the page will not be returned.

Outcome: don't rush to make a decision you might regret. If you want to take a break from Facebook, you can deactivate your account for a while. Then you can return at any time.

Account deactivation instead of deletion

Deactivating (disabling) an account hides your page for as long as you need and allows you to return at any time (unlike deleting an account).

As we have already said, this function is located in section "Settings - Account Management - Edit - Deactivate Account". And to get to the settings, use the triangle-arrow at the top right in the full version of the Facebook site.
