Whatsapp Delete Account (Image credit: Joe Maring / Android Central)

There are all sorts of reasons you may want to delete your WhatsApp account. Maybe you decided it falls short compared to Telegram or Signal, or you're leery of how WhatsApp shares your data with Facebook. More likely, you were hit by the recent six-hour Facebook outage — the second such outage this year — and decided enough is enough.

Whatever your reasons, deleting your WhatsApp account is a decision that should not be made lightly, as doing so will permanently erase all of your data. Even if you choose to reactivate your account in the future, your deleted data will still be gone and unable to be recovered.

So before you decide, choose which app will replace it. That way, you can save your chat history to the replacement app before you delete WhatsApp, making the transition less final. For example, we have guides on how to transfer your WhatsApp messages to Telegram or transfer them to Signal.

With that out of the way, if you still want to know how to delete your WhatsApp account, we'll show you how in just a few simple steps.

  1. Open WhatsApp on your phone.
  2. Tap the three dots in the upper-right corner.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Account.Source: Joe Maring / Android Central

  1. Indicate your reason for wanting to delete your account.
  2. Tap Delete my account.
  3. For the final time, tap Delete my account.Source: Joe Maring / Android Central

While deleting your account is easy enough, WhatsApp makes you reconfirm your decision quite a few times throughout the various pages. While it might seem annoying at first, it's good that the company does this to stress the importance of what you're doing.

Once you tap the "Delete my account" button on that final page, your account and all data relating to it are gone for good. If you ever want to jump back aboard the WhatsApp train, you'll need to create a new account from scratch.

In other words, be very, very sure that this is something you want to do. Consider an alternative from among the best Android messaging apps before you jump ship, and let your contacts know where you can be found.

How to remove WhatsApp from your phone completely on Android: step by step instructions from use for personal reasons.

To remove WhatsApp completely from your Android phone, it is not enough to move the icon to the trash - with this action you simply remove the shortcut from the desktop, the application itself remains on the device. On Android smartphones, this can be done in three ways: through the desktop, through the Play Market, and also using the Android settings. 9Ol000

  • What happens after deleting an account?
  • Deleting media files: photos, videos, gifs
  • Is all information deleted immediately and permanently?
  • Reinstalling WhatsApp
  • Is it possible to restore WhatsApp after a complete removal
  • What does it mean to correctly delete the messenger on Android operation of the application when it is reinstalled.

    Before proceeding with the complete removal of WhatsApp, it is worthwhile to back up your chat history to the cloud in advance so that dialogs and media files are not lost. This is true in all cases - both if the application is removed temporarily and it is planned to be installed again, and if you are not currently thinking about restoring information. As practice shows, deleted information is often still needed, and it is very useful to have a backup copy at hand.

    If you plan to permanently stop using WhatsApp and want to “cut off your escape routes”, delete your account.

    Deleting a WhatsApp account

    Ways to remove

    There are three main ways to remove WhatsApp from Android completely:

    • through the desktop;
    • via Google Play Store;
    • through Android settings.

    Separately, it is worth mentioning a complete reset - Hard Reset. After applying this method, all information from the device will be deleted - this applies not only to WhatsApp, but also to all other applications, media and accounts (including Google accounts). A full reset of the settings should be resorted to very carefully and only in the most extreme cases, when other methods are not suitable.

    Be sure to back up everything you need after a system restore.

    Via desktop

    This method allows you to uninstall the application at any time, even if you are not connected to the Internet. We act like this:

    • We find the messenger icon on the desktop;
    • Click on it with a long tap until a small pop-up menu appears;
    • In the upper right menu we see a round icon with an i inside, click on it;
    • We get into the application menu and press the "Delete" button.

    This is the easiest and fastest way, after using it the messenger can be easily restored if necessary.

    Through the Play Market

    To use this method of uninstalling the messenger, the device must be connected to the network, nothing else is required.

    Removal steps:

    • Open the Play Market;
    • In the search bar, click on your avatar;
    • In the menu that opens, select "My apps and games";
    • Open the "Installed" tab;
    • We see a list of applications with the "Open" or "Update" buttons.

    Here we select WhatsApp and click on it to open the application menu. You do not need to update it, we ignore this button. On the messenger page that opens, click "Delete" and "OK" to confirm the action.

    In the smartphone settings

    On the desktop we find the "Settings" section and open it and go to "Applications and notifications". Then proceed as follows:

    • We find WhatsApp, click on it, holding it with a long tap;
    • In the application menu, press the "Delete" button;
    • Click "OK" to complete the process.

    That's it, the application has been deleted, but your account has remained in place - if you wish, you can download WhatsApp again and log in using your old number. In this case, your account and all interlocutors will remain the same as at the time of deletion.

    Removing WhatsApp from your phone

    Using special tools

    To effectively remove applications, there are special programs, the use of which allows you to get rid of unnecessary software quickly and completely.

    One of the most popular programs of this type is CCleaner. The program is free, you just need to find it in the Play Market and run it. There is a paid advanced functionality, but it is not required to remove applications.

    To uninstall WhatsApp using CCleaner, proceed as follows:

    • Open Ccleaner, at the top right, click on the icon with three dashes to open the menu and select Application Management here;
    • Staying in the "Installed" tab, look at the list of programs and check the box next to WhatsApp;
    • At the bottom right we see the “…” button, click on it with a long tap;
    • We see the options for possible actions and select "Delete from device".

    Next, click "Delete" and "OK" again - that's it, the messenger is deleted. Just close CCleaner, no need to restart your device.

    How to delete

    If you decide to stop using WhatsApp, do not immediately delete your account - this is an irreversible action that you may regret, but it will be too late.

    To get started, simply uninstall the messenger using one of the standard methods. This leaves the opportunity to change your mind and install WhatsApp again, while the account will remain the same.

    If you want to revise and update your social circle, you don't have to uninstall the app. You can just selectively delete some contacts or entire chats, or just clear conversations by saving chats.

    If you just plan to change your SIM card, you do not need to delete your current account - WhatsApp has a special option to change your phone number without losing data.

    If all these half-measures do not suit you, and a decision has already been made to remove WhatsApp from the phone completely with all messages, we delete the account. After that, you will not be able to correspond and call up with your contacts under the current account.

    Chat history

    To delete all correspondence in WhatsApp at once, do this:

    • Open the application, go to the "Chats" tab;
    • Select "More options";
    • Go to "Settings";
    • Select "Chats";
    • Open "Chat History";
    • Click "Clear All Chats".
    Delete all chats in WhatsApp

    Check the boxes next to "Delete favorite messages" and "Delete media" in this chat.

    After that, click "Delete messages" - and all text messages along with media files will be deleted.

    Deleting an account

    How to permanently delete a WhatsApp account through an Android phone:

    • Open the application and call up the menu by touching the button with three dots at the top right;
    • Select the "Settings" item,
    • Go to the "Account" section;
    • Select the "Delete account" function;
    • Next, the program asks you to enter the phone number to which the account was linked - do this;
    • Click "Delete account";
    • Specify the reason for deletion in the appropriate field.

    After completing these steps, you will see a question from the developers "What can we improve?" - it can be ignored. Click "Delete Account" again to complete the process.

    We confirm our intentions by clicking on the button at the bottom of the screen - that's it, your WhatsApp account is completely deleted.

    This procedure takes longer than the standard deletion of the messenger, and this is done on purpose - to protect users from accidental account deletion.

    What happens after the account is deleted?

    As a result, everything is deleted in general - the account name, avatar, chats. If you have participated in group conversations, you will also be removed from them, regardless of your status (member or administrator). The entire message history is erased from the device from which you logged into the deleted account. All backups from WhatsApp that were saved to Google Drive are also destroyed.

    Your details will be removed from your friends contacts. The account will not be reflected in groups or on any device. Other users will not find any mentions, as if you were never on WhatsApp.

    Deleting your account does not automatically delete your messages from your interlocutors. All sent files and conversations are saved in both chat and public groups. You can delete your messages in different ways, but you need to do it in a timely manner, and deleting the application does not contribute to this.

    The good news is that any data shared by WhatsApp with other Facebook companies about you will also be deleted. That is, you partially destroy the information bubble of filters with advertising tailored specifically for you.

    Important: when deleting an account, all received and transferred media files will still remain in the device's memory, they must be deleted manually - do not forget to do this to free up as much space as possible.

    Deleting media files: photos, videos, gifs

    If you deleted WhatsApp using standard methods, but did not clear the correspondence, all pictures, photos and other media files sent between the interlocutors remain on the device. They take up space, and it’s unlikely that you keep them on purpose and plan to review them.

    In order to delete all these files, we act as follows:

    • Open any file manager for Android - for example, Google Files;
    • In the menu that opens, select "Applications", here we find WhatsApp;
    • Click on the icon with three dots opposite the application icon and select "Delete unnecessary files" in the list that appears; if desired, in the same menu, you can select "Delete application".
    Deleting all WhatsApp files

    This procedure allows you to get rid of unnecessary pictures, photos and other files that take up space and are of no value to you.

    Is all information deleted immediately and permanently?

    According to official figures, deleting an account and all information can take up to ninety days from the start of the deletion process.

    Copies of user information may also be stored for up to ninety days on servers used for data recovery in the event of natural disasters, software errors, or other failures. But this does not mean that the user can restore the account after deletion - there is no such possibility.

    We remind you once again: before deleting the application, and, especially, the account, create a backup copy.

    Reinstall WhatsApp

    If you need to reinstall WhatsApp to check or activate some functions, you just need to uninstall the application using any of the standard methods and install it again.

    For example, go to Settings, select Apps & Notifications, select WhatsApp and click Remove.

    To reinstall:

    • Open the Google Play Store, find WhatsApp through the search bar and click Install;
    • Open WhatsApp, accept the Terms of Service and confirm the phone number;
    • Restoring a backup if it is found ;
    • Specify a name, but you can change it later.

    If you often reinstall the application, it is recommended to use special software for this - for example, the CCleaner described above, so that after repeated removals and installations, file remnants do not accumulate on the device.

    Is it possible to restore WhatsApp after a complete removal

    If you deleted not only the application, but also the account, it is assumed that it is impossible to restore it.

    But the developers of the program know that deleting an account is often done thoughtlessly, and many users want to restore it. Therefore, they give 30 days to restore the profile.

    Restoring access to a deleted WhatsApp account is not feasible, but the phone number previously used for authorization can be used to re-register in the application completely from scratch.

    Whatsapp is not deleted.

    In January 2021, the company that owns the WhatsApp messenger of the same name updated the user agreement, amending the privacy policy.

    Most ordinary users of the messenger, according to the good old tradition on the machine to click "OK", will not pay attention to these changes, and without reading they will click accept in the pop-up notification, and thus allow the messenger to betray partners, and primarily the parent company Facebook, the following data:

    • Account registration data;
    • Transaction data;
    • Data on the use of services, including interaction with other services of the company;
    • Information about the user's mobile devices (IP addresses, identifiers, etc. ).

    What will not be transmitted: user correspondence data.

    They will remain end-to-end encrypted. However, this is only a statement of the company, as it will be in practice, we are unlikely to know.

    And at first glance, there is no tragedy in the new privacy policy, since everyone is well aware that almost all products of this kind, as well as online services, collect and analyze data about their users, and WhatsApp does not look like a pioneer or a stunner in this The basics, however, if you remember which company owns the messenger, then the transfer of information to someone who has been seen more than once or twice in massive data leaks does not look desirable.

    The activity of the official bodies of different countries is also surprising, reacting very zealously to the coming changes. So, on the fact of the changes, the Turkish Competition Council launched its own investigation into Facebook and WhatsApp.

    Germany went even further and supplemented competition law with a provision restricting linking to German user accounts without their consent, data collected from third-party applications and websites.

    Do not lag behind Turkish colleagues and Russian officials, making warnings and suggestions.

    Behind such activity of official structures, it is unlikely that there is only concern for their citizens and their personal data. Selfish interests should not be discounted. It can be assumed that the goal of pressure is also to promote their own similar products, which different countries began to acquire long before the WhatsApp scandal, and the situation itself has become a great way to increase the popularity of these “pocket” services among the population, since it is much easier to control your service than a third-party one. .

    This topic itself has been repeatedly discussed and covered in the media, so we will not dwell on it in detail, since today we want to talk about another point that seems to be interconnected with the situation around the new WhatsApp privacy policy.

    It so happened that everyone in my family follows telecom news - they simply have no choice 😊

    In this regard, any significant events are discussed, questions are asked, advice is asked. The news about WhatsApp was no exception. But the question turned out to be unexpected and curious for me, because of which several experiments were carried out that prompted me to curious thoughts.

    So, no later than on Monday, my wife contacted me with a question about how to remove WhatsApp from the phone, since after switching to a much more convenient Telegram, she practically does not use that messenger, and in the light of the above events, she saw in this is a good reason to reduce the number of "extra" applications on the phone.

    I also have a problem, you say. My first reaction was exactly the same thought that I expressed - with a long tap you hold the messenger icon and select the “delete” item in the context menu that appears. Everything, you are great.

    After these words, they looked at me reproachfully. This was the first thing that was tried without my advice, and did not give any results - the messenger was in its place.

    Well, the next logical step was to go into the phone settings, find the “applications” item, find WhatsApp in the list of applications and delete it by pressing the appropriate button.

    In response to my next "smart" suggestion, I received another sarcastically skeptical smile and an offer to try this great advice myself.

    Well, it's said and done. Tried. And, as you probably guessed, nothing happened. After clicking on "delete" nothing happened. At all.

    Curious.

    Now it was my turn to be surprised. However, previous experience suggested that the matter was most likely in a specific device on which a minor software failure occurred, which means that it is necessary to try a method that is trouble-free in such cases - to restart the phone. There is no sense, WhatsApp is still not deleted.

    And the most interesting thing is that another application, chosen at random, was perfectly deleted.

    The most correct method of solving a problem is sequential diagnostics from simple to complex, so the next logical step was to find out if the problem was in the application or in the phone.

    To do this, I tried to remove WhatsApp from my phone. And I didn't succeed. The symptoms are exactly the same - zero reaction both to deletion with a long tap and through the settings.

    There is only one painless way left - deletion through the application store.

    And here success awaited me, both on my wife's phone and on my own. The application allowed itself to be deleted and disappeared from the phone menu.

    It should be noted that neither my wife nor my wife had WhatsApp installed by default in the firmware by the manufacturer, and therefore it was not a system one, so it is impossible to attribute the impossibility of deletion to this reason.

    But I wouldn't be myself if I didn't decide to experiment.

    It is necessary to find out what exactly the reason is, in an accidental failure, or in the features of the application.

    To do this, the app was installed again via the official app store and then an attempt was made to uninstall it.

    As expected, nothing worked, and the application refused to be removed using the phone's own tools.

    To remove it again, I had to go to the Play Market and remove it from there.

    For the sake of interest, I checked the same thing on several phones of friends - exactly the same situation. Moreover, on all tested devices, WhatsApp was not preinstalled in the firmware and was not a system one, I specifically paid attention to this.

    I tried to install the application by downloading the apk file.

    Behavior has not changed - still cannot be deleted. So it's not the phone.

    Another nuance was the absence of such problems with the removal of the previous version, released before the announcement of changes in the terms of use of the service (in the second half of 2020). This version, installed using the apk file, allows you to remove yourself from the phone menu.

    A very curious moment. Thought provoking.

    Conclusion

    If you think about it and try to play with conspiracy theories, then you can assume intent in such behavior of the application, especially in the current pressure on the messenger.
