How to hide instagram ads

How to Get Rid of Annoying Instagram Ads

Since Instagram introduced advertisements and a non-chronological feed, there's no shortage of paid posts on users' feeds. Nowadays, scrolling through your feed feels like driving past multiple billboards on a highway or watching cable TV because there are just too many ads on Instagram.

So if you're tired of scrolling past annoying ads on Instagram, read on. This article will give you detailed step-by-step guides on how to stop ads on Instagram.

How Instagram Ads Work

It's not uncommon to rack your brain wondering when you followed the brands trying to sell products to you, only to realize that you're looking at a paid advert instead of a regular post. But why does Instagram have so many ads?

Instagram ads work by tracking your activity on the app. The more you engage with a brand's content by liking or commenting on its posts, the more likely you are to be targeted by ads from that brand.

But that's not the only way that these ads find you. Instagram also tracks your activity on other websites that are owned by Facebook and even on third-party websites.

Ever browsed Nike sneakers with Google, only to be bombarded with ads for sneakers on Facebook and Instagram shortly afterwards? It seems weird, and it may spook you, but that's how Facebook targets you with relevant ads across apps.

Facebook does this through its retargeting service, Facebook Exchange, which allows advertisers to track your browsing habits online. As a result, they can show you more relevant ads. And what's more, you may see the same sponsored ads multiple times over, making them obtrusive and repetitive—potentially ruining your in-app experience.

How to Identify Instagram Ads

2 Images

Instagram ads appear in your main feed and in your Stories, with the label Sponsored at the top of the post, below the brand name. They also include an action button at the bottom. A sponsored post can be an image or video, and it prompts you to take an action, based on the company's goal for the ad.

Below are some of the actions you may be prompted to take:

  • Install Now for app-related ads.
  • Download to download what is advertised.
  • Sign Up to register on a site.
  • View shop to browse items on a business' Instagram Shop page.
  • Shop Now to buy the product advertised.
  • Learn More to get more information on the product or service advertised.
  • View Instagram Profile to go through a business' profile page.
  • Send Message to get in touch with a business.
  • Book Now to make a booking directly from your feed when you come across an ad.

Instagram keeps tabs on the ads you've interacted with under Ad Activity. To view this activity, follow the steps below:

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner to go to your profile.
  2. Select the three-bar menu in the top-right corner, then go to Settings.
  3. Click Ads, then select Ad Activity.

Ad activity will show you your recent activity based on your engagements. You can select Ad topics to tell Instagram which topics you prefer not to see ads about, but this will not remove ads altogether—just ads for certain things.

How to Remove Instagram Ads

If you're wondering how to get rid of ads on Instagram, there are several methods you can use, such as hiding and reporting specific ads, and blocking certain accounts.

A word of caution though: while blocking ads on Instagram completely is impossible, you can limit or block irrelevant or annoying ads on the app each time you see them. This can help make a noticeable difference to your app experience, so it's worth a try.

Here's how to turn off ads on Instagram...

Method 1: Hiding Instagram Ads

2 Images

If you find a particular advert annoying or repetitive, you can easily hide it.

Simply follow these steps to hide an ad on Instagram:

  1. As you go through your feed and come across a sponsored post you don't like, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the post.
  2. Tap Hide Ad.
  3. When asked Why are you hiding this ad?, select the most appropriate option from the list presented. This is to help Instagram better guide your ad experience on the app going forward.

Marking it as inappropriate or irrelevant will make it less likely that the advert will appear again on your feed—since you'll be seen as the wrong audience for the ad. Selecting a different option may simply reduce the frequency with which you see it.

If you want the ad removed from Instagram due to violating community standards or false advertising, you should use the second method...

Method 2: Reporting Ads on Instagram

To report an ad that you find inappropriate or misleading, follow the steps below:

  1. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the post.
  2. Select Report Ad.
  3. Below Why are you reporting this ad?, select the reason why you’re reporting this ad from the list presented to you.

However, be careful not to falsely report adverts if they do not violate any rules or mislead users.

Method 3: Blocking Brand Accounts

3 Images

The final way to remove Instagram ads is to block the sender’s account. Here's how:

  1. Tap the name of the company or brand at the top of the sponsored post. This will lead you to its profile.
  2. Click on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the profile.
  3. Select Block.
  4. You will be presented with two options: Whether you want to block the specific profile only or if you want to block any other profiles that the company may create in the future. Select the first option and tap Block.

Of course, this will remove just one page’s ads, and you must repeat this for any other advertising account you do not wish to see ads from.

This works well if there's a specific advertiser you never want to hear from and that you don't wish to follow on Instagram.

Remove Instagram Ads to Enhance Your In-App Experience

While there is no sure-fire way of completely and permanently removing ads on Instagram, the methods mentioned in this article will drastically reduce the ads you do see.

Unfortunately, this has to be done as often you come across the ads, as there’s not a single, easy way to remove Instagram ads all at once. Nevertheless, it's worth doing if you want a more peaceful experience on the app.

How to stop seeing ads on Instagram (2022)

Whether you’re scanning through Instagram Stories or your timeline, you’re bound to see an advertisement labeled “Sponsored” sooner rather than later. If you would like to stop seeing ads on Instagram or customize your ad experience by hiding and blocking them, this guide will help you out.

Why you might want to block Instagram ads

Some ads can be helpful, letting you know about new products, services, apps, websites, and more. For instance, when I move to a new city I often see ads for new restaurants I might want to check out. And around Valentine’s Day I see excellent ads for custom woodwork designs and services that ship gifts. I like these ads.

On the other hand, I have had many irritating and poor ads. Some of them are pure scams or misleading at best! You really want me to believe I can be a millionaire and have a Lamborghini by getting your limited two-hour course sold at a 97% discount?

Here are some of the reasons to block ads on Instagram:

  • Cleans up your Instagram timeline.
  • Saves time as fewer ads mean less scrolling. You can finish catching posts from people you follow and close the app sooner.
  • Saves mobile data.
  • Protects you from seeing sensitive or misleading advertisements.

How to get rid of ads on Instagram timeline and stories

Here are two ways to stop seeing all Instagram ads:

1. Use a mobile phone browser

The easiest way to stop seeing Instagram ads is to use Instagram in your browser instead of the official Instagram app. I logged in to Instagram in my iPhone’s Safari browser and used it for a few days and I never saw ads in the browser. But the moment I switch to the official Instagram app, I start seeing tons of sponsored and suggested posts.

2. Use Instagram on a computer

I have also logged in to Instagram using Chrome on my Mac, and that never populated any ads, either. While writing this post, I realized it might be because of the ad-blocker extension. I turned off the ad-blocker and still no ads. After that, I used Instagram from a different account in a second Chrome profile with no ad-blocker installed and still, I didn’t see any advertisements!

How to tailor your Instagram ads

Instagram works fine in a browser, and you won’t have problems scrolling through the social network in a phone or computer browser. No ads mean you can quickly catch up to the posts of people you follow, close Instagram, and do something productive. However, if you don’t like using it in a browser, there are no ways to turn off all ads in the Instagram app. But you can customize your ad experience so that you don’t see annoying, misleading, or repetitive ads. Here’s how to do that.

See Instagram ads you have interacted with

Let’s say you show interest in an ad (ie. you like, comment, share, follow, install the app, visit the link, or interact in some way with the sponsored Instagram post). Soon, you’ll notice that you see more related ads.

Here’s how to see the Instagram ads you’ve recently interacted with:

  1. Open the Instagram app and tap your profile picture icon from the bottom right.
  2. Tap the hamburger icon from the top right and choose Settings.
  3. Tap Ads > Ad Activity. On this screen, you can see the recently clicked story ads or other post ads you have interacted with. You can’t do much here except tap the three dots icon for an ad and report it, learn about that ad account or Instagram ads.

While you’re in the Ads section, take some time to explore it.

How to hide an Instagram ad

Don’t like an ad? Follow these steps to hide it, and Instagram won’t show it again:

  1. When you come across an Instagram ad, tap the three dots icon from its upper right.
  2. Tap Hide ad.
  3. Select a reason for hiding the ad.

How to report an Instagram ad

You don’t like a normal ad, so you want to hide it. However, some ads on Instagram are scams, misleading, or dangerous. In these cases, you can report it to Instagram. Here’s how to do that.

  1. Tap the three-dots icon for an ad you want to report.
  2. Tap Report ad.
  3. Choose a reason for reporting this Instagram ad. Reporting an Instagram ad also means you shouldn’t see it again.

How to block an ad account on Instagram

Finally, if you dislike all Instagram ads (plus posts and stories) from a brand or individual, you can block their account. This will ensure you don’t see ads from that account again.

Here’s how to block a brand on Instagram to stop seeing their ads:

  1. Go to the ad account’s profile by tapping their name on the sponsored post. You can also search for it or find them under the Ad Activity section.
  2. Tap the three dots icon from the top right of that brand’s profile page.
  3. Choose Block.
  4. Tap Block.

Ads blocked on Instagram

This is how you can stop seeing ads on Instagram and personalize your experience.

Apart from using Instagram in a web browser, there isn’t much you can do to block all Instagram ads. However, the above steps should help clean up your Instagram feed and offer an improved, safe experience.

Change your settings for personalizing Instagram ads based on your activity data from our partners

You can prevent Instagram ads from being personalized based on your activity data from our partners. To do this, go to the settings, select the "Advertising" menu and click "Data about your activities received from our partners. " This setting only affects whether we can use your activity data provided by partners to serve you personalized ads on Instagram. If you turn this setting off, you may still be targeted with ads based on your activity on our platform or information received from a particular company that provided us with a list of users or devices (provided that we were able to match your profile with data from such a list ).

You can specify in your Facebook ad preferences how your activity data from our partners can be used to personalize ads on Facebook and other Facebook Company Products, but please note that these settings do not apply to Instagram. Learn more about how to change your permission to use your activity data from our partners to personalize ads on Facebook.

Note. If you are using an Android device or iOS 13 or earlier, you can disable ads based on your activity data from our partners in your device settings. In this case, we'll target ads based on your activity on Facebook Company Products or lists of people and devices submitted to us by advertisers (provided we can match your profile to that list).

Set your Instagram ad theme settings

To restrict ads to specific topics, go to your Instagram ad theme settings. Your choice of ad topics will be applied to all linked Facebook and Instagram accounts. If you have not linked your accounts, you can update your theme settings for ads shown on Facebook and other Meta Products.

Set up other advertising preferences

Some Facebook ad preference settings may apply to Instagram. In these settings, you can change how we use information about your activities on Facebook Company Products to serve ads that are relevant to you.

Changes to Facebook ad preferences or your device settings will not delete information on Facebook and Instagram, nor will it affect the amount of ads you see.

Advertising has seeped into our everyday life and has become part of our reality. Including on Instagram. Previously, users could turn off all Instagram ad alerts through the Lucky Patcher app or Root rights on Android.

This is currently not possible, the developers have eliminated variants of such workarounds. And if the targeted ad cannot be completely removed, you can turn off personal advertising.

Personal ads are located in the feed of publications and stories, are formed with the help of user requests and interests on other sites.

For example, if you ordered a dress in an online store, then for some time you will see promotional offers for the purchase of similar items. Sometimes it is annoying, so the person wants to remove it. The following explains how this can be done step by step.

How to turn off ads on your Instagram feed

To turn off the harassment of promotional offers on this social network, watch a short step-by-step video tutorial.

Follow these steps:

  2. Click on the three bars in the upper right corner.
  3. Tap on the inscription "Settings" at the very bottom of the menu.
  4. Then go to the "Advertising" section.
  5. Find "Data about your activities from our partners" and click on it.
  6. In the new section, switch the slider, make it inactive.

Instagram will stop collecting data about your queries, and intrusive ads from other sites will disappear from the feed immediately.

How to disable targeted ads on Instagram

You can't completely disable such ads, but you can get rid of unwanted information. To do this, tap on the three dots in the upper right corner of the ad layout in the stories and select "Hide ads", then tap on any of the reasons.

This layout format will no longer pop up. You can repeat the action constantly to clean targeted offers as much as possible.

Another way is to indicate preferences for promotional offers. Here's how to do it:

  • go to your profile and tap on the three bars in the upper right corner of the screen,
  • go to settings and find the "Security" section,
  • select "Data access",

  • First, find the entry or story that was being promoted.
  • Then select the item under the "View Promotion" entry. A menu for viewing will open in front of you.
  • Find the trash icon in the upper right corner and click on it. The entry will be deleted.
