Hi, your best friend Frankie Caruso is speaking. If you’re here, it’s because you – just like me – have been losing your mind looking for a way to delete a contact from WhatsApp.

Luckily, I can help you out.

You might find that there are several reasons that you want to delete a contact and cut ties through the WhatsApp application. Perhaps you have encountered an unknown contact, someone that appears to be sending you spam messages, or worse a friend that you have to isolate yourself from.

While it might seem like a simple concept, many people are not aware of how to get rid of a contact forever. This means that they can no longer see your online access, your profile information or contact us in any way through the app. We want them gone.

Many people are under the impression that deleting a WhatsApp contact is the same as getting rid of their number from the phone book, but this is not the case.

This will not solve the problems that you might be having as this individual can still see your online activity. They can still send you messages, see your status and access your profile information.

In order to successfully and completely remove any contact you have from WhatsApp is to block the user.

By doing this, you are cutting them off from being able to send you messages, see your online status, or any information (including your picture) from your profile.

Highlights:

  • There is no option to delete a contact from WhatsApp while not also deleting it from the phone’s contacts list.
  • Your deleted contacts will still be able to view your Status, your profile picture and your last login and, most importantly, send you messages. The only way you can delete all traces of you from their phone too is to block them and then delete the number from your contacts list.

Frankie’s Take:

Remember that besides deleting a contact, you can also report as spam. I discuss it in my article.

How to delete a contact from WhatsApp on iPhone

Follow these steps and you will have no problem to delete a WhatsApp contact permanently.

  1. Open WhatsApp and find the contact you want to delete
  2. Once you find them, you have to block them on WhatsApp (this way they will no longer be able to write you messages, see your Status updates and your Last Active status). Click on the contact’s name > scroll to the end of the screen and click Block Contact > Block
  3. Now click on Edit (upper-right corner)
  4. Tap Delete Contact at the bottom of the Edit Contact tab to delete the contact from both WhatsApp and your iPhone’s contact list.

How to delete a contact from WhatsApp on Android device

The process may vary slightly depending on your Android device model. For this tutorial, I used a Samsung S21.

Proceed as follows:

  1. Launch WhatsApp and open the chat with the contact you want to delete.
  2. Now you can block then so that they won’t be able to write you or see your Stories anymore. Tap the name of the contact at the top of the screen, click on Block and then Block.
  3. Now tap More options > View in address book.
  4. Click on the three vertical dots > Delete to delete them both from WhatsApp and your device’s contacts.

Will the deleted contact know they have been deleted from my phone?

The answer is no. WhatsApp does not send any kind of notification that you have been deleted. However, the deleted person can get suspicious and use some techniques to figure out if you have been blocked and deleted or not. I tell you about it in this my guide: how to know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp.

Is it possible remove a contact from WhatsApp but not in the address book?

As said several times throughout this tutorial, it is not possible. Maybe in the future WhatsApp will implement this feature, but to date there is no news about it.

Conclusion

I hope the information included this guide on how to delete someone from WhatsApp has been helpful.

Before parting ways, here’s a quick recap: to delete a WhatsApp contact permanently you must first block and then delete them. Blocking someone on WhatsApp prevents the “victim” from accessing your information (Status and Last Seen) and from sending you messages.

I suggest you read my guide to better understand what happens when you block a contact (or number) on WhatsApp.

Should you have any doubts or questions, or have found an alternative method and want to share it with me comment on the post or contact me on my Instagram profile.

How to Delete a WhatsApp Contact on a Mobile Device

  • You can easily delete a WhatsApp contact; however, note that when you delete a contact in WhatsApp, the contact will also be deleted on your phone itself.
  • Another option is to first delete the contact from your phone, which will automatically delete the contact from WhatsApp as well.
  • This story is a part of Business Insider's Guide to WhatsApp.

If you're like pretty much all of us, your phone is probably filled with contacts that you've never called or messaged.

From that handyman who helped fix your bathroom three summers ago, to that friend who moved away and then fell off the face of the earth in 2014, you've probably been confronted by a dozen or more of these pointless contacts every time you open WhatsApp.

Whether based on disuse or dislike, do yourself a favor and delete any WhatsApp contacts you no longer need.

Here's how to do it.

How to delete a contact from WhatsApp on Android that cannot be deleted

Do you want to delete a contact on Android, but it says that contacts from read-only accounts will be hidden, but not deleted? On this page you will find instructions on how to delete contacts from WhatsApp on Android that cannot be deleted from the phone book.

Recently, I myself encountered such a problem when I wanted to delete a number from contacts, but it was not deleted, but only a notification appeared that contacts from accounts were read-only, but would not be deleted. At the beginning, I could not understand what was the catch, because there is a button to delete an unnecessary number, but it is not deleted. Then, after a little thought, I realized that the contact is tied to the vatsap and needs to be deleted from there. There is a lot of different information on the Internet, unfortunately not one option has worked. And yet I found on my phone how to delete unwanted contacts from WhatsApp, see below I posted detailed instructions with pictures on how to do this. Personally, this method helped me, I hope the information will be useful for you. Below are links to related articles.

To delete a contact on WhatsApp follow these steps:
Opening the "WhatsApp" application.
In the Watsap contact list, click on the contact that we need to delete, as if we want to start writing a message to him. (We have not added this screenshot, but the rest will be below. If something is not clear, then look at the pictures attached below where I have highlighted the necessary items and buttons.)
Now we need to open the "Menu" by clicking on the three vertical dots.
Next, in the menu that opens, select the "View contact" item.

Next, open the "Menu" again by clicking on the icon in the form of three vertical dots.
Now in the menu that appears, select the "Edit" item. (Here you can also select the item "Open in the address book", after which we get into the contacts of the phone book where you can try to delete it, but if this does not work out, then it is better to select "Change" in the menu).

Next, we can delete a contact from WhatsApp, for this we delete the number and name of the contact (we clear these items so that there are no characters left) and save the changes by clicking on the icon "Tick" .
Done! the contact from whatsapp and the phone book is deleted, close and reopen the whatsapp application to see that the contact is completely deleted.

Anatoly Timofeevich, if you need to delete the caller's number from WhatsApp, go to CALLS (in the WhatsApp application) in the list of calls that opens, click on the number you want to delete and hold until a check mark appears on it, after which you will see an icon in the upper part of the screen basket view by clicking on which number will be deleted. There is a second way, in the list of calls, simply click on the number that you want to delete from WhatsApp, then at the top of the screen, click on the menu in the form of three vertically arranged dots, in the menu that opens, select DELETE FROM CALL LOG. You can also block this number.

Didn't help. As well as all the other methods found on the net. But I accidentally found another solution to the problem. Android 8.1 automatically "gives birth" to you an account in Duo, a sort of Google WhatsApp, even if you don't even know about the existence of such an application. And he manages to link some added contacts to this account, and then does not allow them to be deleted because of their "importance" for this very Duo. Find the "Users and Accounts" tab in your phone's settings and just take the hell out of your Duo account. After that, I deleted the unnecessary contact by itself. Well, if you still use this Duo, then agree on deleting contacts with it separately. An obvious bug from Google.

How to delete contacts from WhatsApp: detailed instructions for Android and iOS phones

Contents0205

  • 3 Delete contacts and conversations on iOS
  • Deleting a contact is one of the most basic operations in WhatsApp. But due to the peculiarities of synchronization, not everyone knows how to do it correctly. Today we will consider all the nuances of deleting contacts in WhatsApp so that extra names do not annoy your eyes.

Features of deleting contacts in WhatsApp

WhatsApp and phone contact list is automatically synchronized.

This means that every person in your phone book who uses WhatsApp also appears in the messenger's contact list.

And vice versa - if you started chatting with a person in WhatsApp, his phone number will be recorded in your standard "Contacts".

If you delete a person with whom you have previously corresponded in WhatsApp (no matter how - in the messenger application or in the standard "Contacts"), then instead of his name in the chat there will be only a number. He will not be considered one of your contacts, but the dialogue with him will not disappear until you manually delete him.

You don't have to worry that the interlocutor will receive a notification that he has been deleted. In fact, such a message would be a breach of confidentiality - no one except you should have access to data about changes to your contact book. However, the interlocutor will no longer receive updates to your status and avatar. If you have a habit of changing them regularly, then the lack of activity can alert a person, and he will understand that you deleted it.

    Instructions for Android

To delete a contact both in WhatsApp and in your phone book, you can use the standard tools (open the "Address Book", find the name you need, touch "More" and select "Delete"). But if you have a lot of phone numbers recorded (sometimes even with duplicate names), then such a search can be difficult. In this case, it is easier to delete a contact through a conversation with him in WhatsApp:

    1. Find the conversation with the person you want to delete.
Tap the desired chat in the list

    Tap More. Select View Contact.

Contact details will be displayed here

Click "More" and select "Open in address book".

This command will redirect us to the standard contacts app

Tap "More" again and select "Delete".

This will remove the contact from both the general list and WhatsApp

Done! Now in a WhatsApp conversation, instead of the name of the interlocutor, you will see only his number. To delete a dialog, touch and hold it until a menu appears. Select Delete Chat. This contact will no longer be displayed either in the list of recorded numbers or in the chat window.

If you select "Clear Chat", then all messages inside the chat will simply be deleted, but the dialogue itself will remain in the list (although it will be empty).

Delete contacts and conversations on iOS

The procedure for iOS is absolutely the same:

    1. Open the chat you need in WhatsApp.
    2. Tap the contact's name at the top of the screen.
    3. Tap Edit in the top right corner. You will be redirected to the contact card in the standard application.
You won't be able to delete a contact directly in WhatsApp - the application will redirect us to the standard address book

Scroll the page to the end and you will see the red inscription "Delete contact". Touch it.

The button we need is at the very end

Now this number is not in WhatsApp or in the standard "Contacts". However, the chat with him is still preserved. To delete it, swipe left and tap More, then select Delete Chat (red line).

As in Android, "Clear Chat" will only delete the messages inside the conversation, not the conversation itself, so "Delete Chat" must be selected

There is a situation in which deleting a contact will not help to stop communicating with a particular user. For example, if someone writes down your number and starts a chat first, their phone number and contact will automatically appear on your phone.
