How to check your whatsapp messages without being seen

Read WhatsApp Messages without Sender Knowing

Real-time chat and video calls are two of the most outstanding inventions. A platform like WhatsApp allows users to use features like this and many other benefits. For instance, you can share location and files and store information on cloud storage. This instant messaging app does not only allow two people to connect, but you can create groups with hundreds of other users.

The private chat room is different from the group chat space because you have more control over what happens. Reading a WhatsApp message without the sender knowing is one of the differences between the two. In this article, we will answer the age-long question of whether one can read WhatsApp messages without the sender knowing.

Part 1. Can I Read WhatsApp Messages without Sender Knowing?

Yes, you can read a message without the sender knowing. The sender knows that you have read a message through the read receipt. Read receipts are three categories of marks that show if a message has been delivered, seen, and read. The check mark is a single grey means the message has been sent successfully.

Secondly, if it turns to a double grey tick, the message has been successfully delivered to the recipient's phone. Lastly, if it turns to the double blue tick, the recipient has read the message. Once a sender sees the double blue check marks, he knows you have read their message. You can have this feature turned off, and the sender would only know when a message has been sent.

They will not be able to tell if you have read a message once the read receipt is turned off. However, the sender can still tell that you have read a message when your read receipt is off. This exception is shared in group chats. The three categories explained above about the read receipts remain true. The difference is that the blue double tick will not appear until every group member has read the message.

Alternatively, the sender can see who has read the message by checking the information by clicking the "i" icon at the top corner of the screen once a message they sent is selected. There, contacts that have received (Delivered to) and read (Read by) the message will be listed.

Part 2. 4 Proven Ways to Read a WhatsApp Message without the Sender Knowing

This section of the article will show you practical steps to read a message without the sender knowing.

Method 1. Disable Read Receipts in WhatsApp

WhatsApp has a feature that helps you prevent the sender from knowing that you have read a message. The feature is simply turning off the read receipt for WhatsApp. The steps to turn off the read receipt are shown below.

  • In your WhatsApp, click on the three vertical dots (hamburger icon) to load the app menu.
  • Select Settings from the menu list.
  • In your app settings, click on Account.
  • Click on Privacy.
  • On the privacy screen, search for Reading receipts and turn it off.

Method 2. Read a WhatsApp Message without Opening

You can preview a message without opening it in different ways.

  • You can read a WhatsApp message without opening it through the short preview on your chat screen.
  • WhatsApp Web allows you to read a message when you hover your mouse over the short preview displayed on your chat screen.
  • You can read a WhatsApp message on the notification bar without opening it.
  • If your device has a notification history, you can use it to read a WhatsApp message without opening it.

Method 3. Read WhatsApp Messages via WhatsApp Monitor

AirDroid Parental Control & WhatsApp Monitor allows you to read WhatsApp messages from another phone. You can remotely read the message, and the sender will not know.

The app was specifically designed for parents to watch what their kids do on their phones. However, it has advanced features that let you see WhatsApp chats from another phone.

  • Read WhatsApp messages from another phone without the sender knowing.
  • Cast your kid's Android device to your phone so you can remotely monitor their online activities in real-time.
  • Have a schedule for the time your children can access WhatsApp.
  • Find your kids' current location and monitor the surrounding your kids.
  • Get alerts when your child enters or leaves the geo-fenced zones you set.

Method 4. Via Blue Tick, Last Seen Hider App

You can use a third-party app to hide your WhatsApp blue tick. Blue tick hider makes reading WhatsApp messages, audio, photos, video, and WhatsApp Statuses simple and hidden.

Pros

  • It is a free app.
  • It does not access your data without permission.

Cons

  • A customer once complains that the app loops and never gets to the bottom of group chats.

Part 3. 3 Other Ways to Read WhatsApp Messages Without Showing Read

There are another three ways people assume they can use to read a message without the sender knowing, but it does not work most time. If you still want to have a try, here they are.

Method 1. Read WhatsApp Messages on Airplane Mode

This method is infeasible because once you are on Airplane mode, messages will not be delivered again. It is impossible to read a message that has not been delivered.

If the message has been delivered before you put your device on Airplane mode, the sender will still find out that you read the message. The reason is that your WhatsApp is an app that works on an algorithm or program. This program will send the instruction to the sender once you are not on Airplane mode that you have read the message.

Method 2. Mark WhatsApp Messages as Unread after Reading

Gmail allows users to mark an inbox as unread even after it has been opened. That is not the case with WhatsApp. Once a message is read, you cannot undo the action, and the recipient will know that you read the message.

Method 3. Delete WhatsApp Message after Reading

Deleting a message after reading it does not prevent the app's program from notifying the sender that you have read the message.

Final Words

WhatsApp is sought after by most people for its quick chat and call features. For some reason, message recipients do not want to read a message. Often, the recipient does not want to reply to the message. Hence, this article details how to read a message without the sender knowing. You can disable read receipt, preview the message without opening it, read from another device, or use a third-party app to hide your WhatsApp blue tick. Also, it addresses three common misconceptions about reading a WhatsApp message without the sender knowing.

There are times when you do not want to go online or get involved in an unwanted conversation on

WhatsApp

. But also, you don’t want to skip updates and become completely ignorant of what’s being said or talked about. In situations like these, you wish for a feature or a work-around through which you can read incoming messages without actually opening the chat or letting the sender know that you have read a particular message. Well, there are both official and unofficial ways to do so. Let’s take a look
The official way- Turn off the Blue tick settings
If you do not want the sender to know whether you have read a message or not, then turn off the Read Receipts feature in your WhatsApp Setting. But remember, it’s a two-way street. If you turn off the Read Receipt, not only the sender but you too will not be able to know if he/she has read the message.
Steps to turn off Read Receipts

Trick one- Read message through the notification bar
When a

WhatsApp message

arrives on your locked phone screen, do not swipe it away. Unlock your phone and press down the notification bar. You will see WhatsApp messages along with other phone notifications. Tap and hold on the WhatsApp message. It will expand and the user will be able to read the message without actually opening the chat. This way, you can fool the sender into thinking that you have not read the message.
Trick two- View WhatsApp in Airplane mode
When you receive a message on WhatsApp, turn on Airplane mode on your smartphone. This will turn off Wi-Fi and Mobile data on your device. You can now go to WhatsApp and read chat messages. This way the sender will not be notified or shown any blue ticks if you have Read Receipt turned on. Remember to close WhatsApp before disabling the airplane mode on your device.
Trick three- Add WhatsApp to widget card on home screen
Android smartphone users can add WhatsApp widget cards to their home screen. This way they can read incoming messages from contacts on WhatsApp without opening the app. Readers must note that tapping on the chat shown in the widget will open WhatsApp. So they should avoid tapping on the chat if they do not want the sender to know they have read the message.
Trick four- WhatsApp web users can simply hover over a chat to read the last message
For those who use WhatsApp on their laptop, they can also fool the sender and read messages without opening them. Simply hover on the contact’s chat whose message you want to read. This will show you a floating bubble with the entire message. Note that the trick works only for the last message received in the chat.

How to hide from the interlocutor that you have read his message

December 4, 2014 Android iOS

Instructions for iMessages, Facebook*, WhatsApp, Viber, VKontakte, Outlook and more.

Each of us knows the following circumstances: we have read the message, but do not want or cannot answer it right away. And our interlocutor sees that the message has been read, but there is no answer. Awkward situation, right? Fortunately, it can be avoided.

How to discreetly read messages in any services

The most obvious option is to view new messages directly on the notification panel of the mobile device without opening the dialog itself. Thus, you can read at least short remarks of your interlocutors.

On iOS, swiping left on a message in the panel and clicking "View" will show even more text that might not fit in the preview. Many Android devices offer a similar opportunity. But if the message is very long, then using the panel it will not be read to the end.

There is another universal, but not the most convenient way. Having received a message, you simply turn off the Internet and read the dialogue in the appropriate program. The interlocutor will not know about reading until you connect the gadget to the Web. This is the only way to secretly view the text of a message, for example, in Instagram* Direct, and many other applications that cannot be disabled in the settings of the read receipt.

Now consider the options for specific programs and services.

How to quietly read messages in iMessages

Developers allow you to hide the fact of reading using settings. If you're using an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → Messages and turn the switch next to Read Report to clear. After that, the interlocutors will not see whether you read their messages or not.

To turn off read receipts on a Mac, go to Messages → Settings → Accounts and uncheck the Read Receipt box.

How to discreetly read messages on Facebook*

Officially, this feature is not provided. But there are solutions from third-party developers.

If you use the Google Chrome browser, download the Unseen for Facebook* extension. Once installed, it will automatically hide the read status from your interlocutors.

If you prefer Firefox, there is a similar plug-in for this browser - Message Seen Disable for Facebook*.

Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to hide the read status in the mobile version. So if you need to ignore someone, you'll have to use Facebook* on your computer.

How to discreetly read WhatsApp messages

There is a special option in the settings of the WhatsApp mobile application for this purpose. Open the section "Settings" → "Account" ("Account") → "Privacy" ("Confidentiality") and turn off the "Read Receipts" toggle switch. After that, the messenger will no longer mark messages with blue checkmarks.

This setting is not available on WhatsApp desktop. But if you use it in the mobile application, then the changes will also apply to the computer.

How to discreetly read messages in Viber

In this popular messenger, you can also disable browsing reports directly in the official mobile client. To do this, go to the menu "Settings" → "Privacy" and turn off the "Viewed" option.

This setting is not available on the desktop version of Viber. But if you use it in the mobile application, then the changes will also apply to the computer.

How to discreetly read messages on VKontakte

There are no standard functions for this. But you can try workarounds.

Android users have access to an alternative VKontakte client called Kate Mobile. If you enter it with your account and click "Settings" → "Online" → "Close unread", then the program will hide the status of messages. Unfortunately, I could not find a client for iOS with the same functionality.

There is also a way to secretly read messages on the web version of VKontakte. You can use link http://vk.com/im?q=day:xxxxxxxx , specifying the numbers of the current date instead of x's in the DDMMYYYY format: for example, 19032018. A window with messages will open in which you can read them without the senders noticing. But keep in mind that developers can close this loophole at any time.

How to discreetly read messages in Outlook

You can disable browsing reports in Outlook on the web. Go to "Settings" → "Mail" → "Message handling" → "Read receipts" and check the box "Never send notifications". Changes will be saved for all Outlook clients.

*Meta Platforms Inc. and its social networks Facebook and Instagram are prohibited in the territory of the Russian Federation.

Miscellaneous

Some people like to accuse other users of reading received messages and leaving them unanswered. Senders will know about this because the read message has a special designation - two blue checkmarks.

If you don’t want to show on WhatsApp that the message has been viewed, but you still want to read it, you need to perform a series of actions in the privacy settings:

1. In the application, click on the special sign “⋮” at the top of the screen and go to the “Settings” menu

2. On your Android device, select "Account" > "Privacy"; on an IOS device, select "Account" > "Privacy";

3. From the list of section options provided, find "Read Receipts" and click "Off".

Thanks to this option, you can discreetly read almost any message on WhatsApp, with the exception of group conversations, where read reports are not disabled.

There are a couple more nuances:
1. The function of disabling the display of blue checkmarks works in both directions: both for the interlocutors and for yourself. This means that you will also not be aware whether the recipient has read the sent message.
2. Turning off automatically hides the ability to view the status of other subscribers.

Read message via desktop widget

Android phones have a special widget for WhatsApp, with which you can view the text of messages without the “read” mark. Its only negative is that text messages and emoticons are available for reading. Other formats such as voice messages, video files or photos open directly in the application's interface.

How to install the WhatsApp widget:

  1. Long press on an empty space on the Desktop to open Widgets
  2. Click on them and select the "WhatsApp" icon.
  3. Drag the widget onto the screen so that its window always displays SMS that come in the messenger itself

Note: on Android models above version 5, the widget is added automatically when you install the application on your phone.

Turn off internet before reading messages

A simple trick for users who don't want to turn off browsing reports. Turn off the Internet on your phone before opening a dialog box with a new message.

To quickly do this on your smartphone, swipe the notifications and icons from the top, click on the “WI-FI” and Mobile Internet icons to turn them off.
