How to change the dark mode on instagram

How to Turn It on for iOS and Android

  • You can get Instagram dark mode on your iPhone, iPad, or Android by updating your device settings.
  • There's no in-app setting to turn on Instagram dark mode — the app will mirror your device's settings.
  • You'll need at least iOS 13 or Android 10 to enable Instagram dark mode.

Turning on dark mode changes an app's background to a darker color — usually black instead of white — to reduce the amount of bright white light on your screen. While dark mode isn't actually better for your eyes, it can help your device save battery and it can feel gentler to look at, especially before bed.

Instagram has dark mode for iPhones or iPads running iOS 13 or higher and Androids running Android 10 or higher. When activated, it changes the backdrop of the app (behind the photos) to black, and all the text to white.

For both iOS and Android, there's no setting to turn on dark mode within the Instagram app itself — rather, you turn on dark mode in your device's system settings and the Instagram app will automatically adjust to match the rest of your device. Here's how to do it.

Quick tip: Before you begin, make sure your Instagram app is updated to the latest version.

How to Turn Off Dark Mode on Instagram

Has your Instagram feed gone dark? If you're here, you're one of the many Insta users who may have opened their app to discover Instagram's Dark Mode already enabled.

Luckily, you can turn off Dark Mode on Instagram in just a few simple steps, whether you're using an Android or iOS device.

In this guide, we go over why you might be seeing a darker feed and how you can return to the light.

You're Not Alone: Many Instagram Users Are Not Happy Campers

If you're fed up with Dark Mode, join the club. Many faithful Instagram users took to Twitter to share their feelings about the darker scroll they didn't ask for.

Some users even shared thoughts about Dark Mode and how it hinders accessibility within the app. For example, many struggled to read the captions when faced with white text on the dark background.

What Does Instagram Have to Say?

Not much at all. In fact, Instagram has yet to release a formal statement about the change, nor has the social media company been necessarily active on Twitter replying to unhappy users.

However, Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram did foreshadow some changes coming to the Insta Home feed back in May.

from Twitter

According to his update, content would be "more immersive" and "take up more of the screen." He mentions that in one test, photos and videos would be enlarged to take up more screen space.

Could Dark Mode be a part of this more "immersive" experience? We're not sure. Instagram tests app changes often and it's possible this change will go away with the next update. Only time will tell.

Other changes are happening on Instagram too, such as the prioritization of suggested posts. The good news is that you can turn off suggested posts too!

How to Turn Off Dark Mode on Instagram

Luckily, it's easy to turn off Dark Mode on Instagram when using both iOS and Android devices. However, it's a bit more of a hassle using an iOS device. Let's dive right in, shall we?

For iPhone

If you're using an iPhone, you'll be unable to turn Dark Mode off from inside the actual Instagram app. Bummer, right? Instead, you'll need to go to your device settings.

First, open the main device settings on your iPhone. Then, navigate to Display & Brightness.

Next, you'll want to select Light from the options under Appearance.

That's it! You should now be able to close the Instagram app, reopen it, and enjoy the lighter feed. Here is an example of both Light and Dark Mode:

For Android

If you're an Android user, this process is even simpler. You don't even have to leave the Instagram app! You lucky duck.

Simply tap on your Instagram profile photo and then select the hamburger menu icon. Here, you should see Settings then Set Theme.

Change it from "System default" to "Light" to override Instagram's new default dark mode. Once you've done this, you should see an immediate switch.

What If These Steps Don't Work?

It's possible that following these steps may not work for you. If that's the case, go ahead and delete the Instagram app and reinstall it. Then, follow these steps again if you need to.

How to turn on the black theme

On iPhone (IOS)

There is no separate button in the application itself that is responsible for turning the dark theme on and off. To enable the black screen on Instagram, you will have to set up the iOS 13 main theme.

There are three ways to enable the dark theme.

Method number 1

Open "Settings", find the item "Display and brightness" and switch the theme to "Dark".

Method number 2

Open the Control Center, press and hold the slider until the theme switch window appears.

Method number 3

Add a dedicated button to the Control Center. To do this, open "Settings", select the "Control Center" section and add a mode switch to the existing elements.

After enabling dark mode, all apps will automatically switch.

iOS 11 includes a "Smart Invert" feature that gives you the ability to turn on the dark screen individually for specific apps. However, it is in the Instagram application that "Smart Inversion" does not work well. Primary colors change: photos become less saturated in color, videos become gray.

On Android

Dark theme can also be activated on Android devices. The interface will be completely black with white accents. The function seems to be in beta, since the new function appeared relatively recently, not all the nuances have been worked out. For example, the battery status bar may also become dark, making it difficult to see how much battery is left on the phone.

To enable on Android:

  1. Go to "Settings";
  2. Go to "System";
  3. Click "About phone";
  4. Scroll to the very bottom and click on the line with the build number;
  5. Wait until you are notified that you have become a developer;
  6. In the developer options, find "Night mode" and set the mode to "Always on".

After enabling this mode, the theme will change in all applications.

Is it possible on a computer?

Of course! It is only active on Windows 10. Older versions do not support the dark theme.

Of course, you will need the official Instagram application for Windows. You can download it from this link to the official app store.

  • Open Settings. To do this, click on the gear button in the start menu;
  • Next, go to the personalization settings, where you select the "Colors" subsection;

  • Specify that you want to use "dark mode".

The appearance of Windows and applications will not change, only the background color and brightness will change.

Unobvious advantages

Black is something new, cool and aesthetic. But there is also a practical aspect.

  • Energy consumption can be reduced by 60% according to PhoneBuff statistics.
  • Reading at night is better with a darkened background. So your eyes are less tired + you do not shine your screen like a flashlight into the face of a person lying next to you.

Users who spend a lot of time on Instagram, especially at night, are often interested in the way to enable a dark theme in the social network on the iPhone. If you go to the settings of the Instagram app on your iPhone, you won't be able to find a dark theme there. However, there are several ways to activate it at once, which we will consider in this instruction.

Table of Contents

Instagram Dark Theme on iPhone

Instagram Dark Theme on iPhone cannot be activated in the app settings. This is due to the fact that it is tied to the settings of the iPhone itself. That is, when the dark theme is enabled on the device, the dark theme is also displayed in the Instagram app.

When you activate the dark theme, Instagram does not change in terms of functionality - it does not add any new features. The only change is that the interface is made in dark colors - the background becomes black and the text color is white. The color of photos and videos in the feed does not change.

Please note

Optometrists recommend using a dark theme at night to reduce eye strain in the dark.

How to enable dark theme on Instagram

As noted above, the dark theme on Instagram on iPhone is tied to the settings of the device itself. Accordingly, in order to enable a dark theme in the application, you need to configure the phone accordingly. There are 2 ways to operate the dark theme on iPhone.

Method 1. Automatically turn on the dark theme, depending on the time of day.

To set it up, launch the Settings app on your iPhone and go to the Display & Brightness section.

Next, activate the "Automatic" switch.

Optionally, you can adjust the settings for automatically enabling Dark Mode. If you do not specify a specific schedule, it will turn on after sunset, and after dawn, the normal light mode will be activated.

Method 2: Install the dark theme permanently.

To do this, go to "Settings" on the iPhone and go to the "Display and brightness" section.

Next, select the “Dark” design option.

The dark theme will immediately turn on on the iPhone, and the dark theme will also be activated on Instagram.

How to turn on the dark theme on Instagram at the right time

The methods that we have indicated above are bad in that they require you to constantly go to the iPhone settings and activate the dark theme. If you need to return to the normal theme on the device after that, you will again have to go to the settings. But there are two ways that make it possible to enable a dark theme in the Instagram application itself.

Method 1. Through the brightness settings.

While in the Instagram app, swipe up on your iPhone to open the shortcut menu.

Next, hold your finger on the brightness control.

This will open a quick menu where you can enable dark mode. Click on the appropriate button.

Immediately after that, the dark theme is activated in the Instagram application.

Please note

The dark theme is activated on the entire device, but after exiting the Instagram application, it can be quickly turned off in the same way.
