The Kardashians, perhaps the most powerful influencers of all time, are a dominating presence here. @kyliejenner, with 289,061,989 followers, is the most-followed after Instagram, with her sisters Kim, Kendall, and Khloé holding 3 of the other top 10 spots. Interestingly, Michelle Obama is the most-followed politician in North America, overtaking her husband Barack.

1. Instagram user statistics 

There are 2 billion active monthly users on Instagram in 2021 (Statista, 2021), having crossed the 2 billion mark in 2021, only 3 years after it crossed the 1 billion mark. This brings it to the super-league club of other social platforms like Facebook and YouTube.

Current Instagram figures show an increase of a billion users than the total numbers in 2018. Although experts had previously expected the platform to hit this milestone in 2024, analysts attribute a big part of this massive growth to the coronavirus pandemic, which drove users to sign up for Instagram. 

While Instagram is only a photo-sharing platform once only popular with teens, it has grown to become one of the most popular social media sites in the world.

2. Instagram Demographics: Location 

As of January 2022, India and the United States of America both tied at the top as the countries with the highest number of Instagram users at 230 and 160 million users each (Statista, 2022).

Based on these numbers, it is clear that the audience and reach of the platform are growing at a rapid pace in most countries outside the U.S. While the figures for the U.S do not seem to change, India recorded approximately 20 million new users between the period of October 2020 and January 2021 (Hootsuite, 2021) and then a 100 million more between 2021 and 2022 (Statista, 2021).

The other countries with the highest number of social media users besides the U.S and India are:  

  • Brazil – 119 million Instagram users 
  • Indonesia – 99 million Instagram users 
  • Russia – 63 million Instagram users 

3. Instagram Demographics: Gender 

51.6% of all Instagram users are female, while 48.4% are male (Statista, 2021).

Unlike other major social media platforms like Twitter which have a very wide gender gap among its users, Instagram appears well-balanced and embraced by both genders equally. More Instagram demographic insights to follow. 

4. Instagram Demographics: Age 

25–34-year-olds make up the age group with the most Instagram users at 31.2% (Statista, 2021).

According to the statistics, 18–24-year-olds are the second most populous group in the Instagram usage world.

65+ year-olds make up the least number of Instagram users at only 2.2%.  

5. Countries with the highest Instagram reach 

The country with the highest Instagram reach in 2022 is Brunei, with 92% (Statista, 2022).  

Kazakhstan might not be the country with the most Instagram users, but it is the country where Instagram reaches the highest percentage of its population: 92% to be precise. 

The other countries with the highest Instagram reach in 2022 are Guam and Cayman Islands.

6. Instagram app download statistics 

Instagram had a total of 170 million downloads in Q4 2021 (SensorTower, 2022).

Besides Facebook, this is one other app that has consistently maintained the top five position, with the number of downloads for the last couple of years. The numbers are quite impressive, even with the entry of other more recent apps like TikTok. 

7. How much time do users spend on Instagram? 

Instagram users spent an average of 28 minutes per day on the platform in 2021 (Hootsuite, 2021). 

This marks a decrease of about two minutes from 2020.

8. Businesses on Instagram statistics 

As Instagram becomes increasingly more popular, an estimated 71% of U.S businesses claimed to use Instagram for Business in 2018 (Mention, 2018). That’s approximately 7 out of 10 businesses that use Instagram to help boost their online visibility and connect with their audiences. Today, the number is even higher.

There are more than 200 million business accounts on Instagram globally that users visit every day (Instagram, 2021). This is quite possible, as 90% of Instagram users follow at least one brand.  

With a good presence on Instagram, businesses can cater to their clients’ needs much easier, as 2 out of 3 Instagram users believe the platform enables interaction with brands (Instagram, 2021). 

What’s more?
It is easy for users to shop directly from the app, and approximately 130 million Instagram users tap on shopping posts to learn more about the product every month.  

Another noteworthy statistic is that 36. 2% of B2B decision-makers use Instagram to research new products or services (Hootsuite/ WeAreSocial, 2020). These figures clearly indicate the power of Instagram as a crucial business tool in this digital era. 

9. Instagram engagement rates 

The average engagement rate for an Instagram post by a business account is 1.11%. That’s true for accounts with less than 10,000 followers. (SocialPilot, 2021).  

These figures imply that for every 100 Instagram followers, you should expect at least engagement from one account. Engagement is currently the highest for image posts at 1.03%, followed by carousel posts at 0.86%. Videos receive the third-highest engagements on Instagram at 0.75%.  

10. Instagram Stories statistics 

According to Instagram, over 500 million accounts use Instagram Stories every day (Instagram, 2021). 

58% of Instagram users claim to have become more interested in a brand/product after seeing it in Stories. A further 50% of them say they have visited a website to buy a product/service as a result of seeing it in Stories.   

Furthermore, 45% of Instagram users prefer to use Stories to become aware of new trends and happenings.  

We shouldn’t also forget that brand stories have an 86% completion rate, according to Conviva Social Insights.

Lastly, Instagram Stories generate a quarter of the platform’s ad revenues. This year, Stories ads are predicted to bring in almost $16 billion in global net ad revenues, according to eMarketer Insights.

These figures clearly indicate that as a business with an online presence on Instagram, it would be crucial to include Instagram Stories as a part of your content marketing strategies.

Studying how we gained 1 million subscribers when launching a new product

Marketers like to compare numbers, but they do it in their own way:)

When I was doing mailings, many people compared Open Rate to show their coolness. Although this is complete bullshit and has nothing to do with real results. You can remove from the database all those who do not read, and my OR will grow by 2 times.

I myself say that in a year I managed to gain 65 thousand subscribers without investment.

But there is one thing…

It is important how and who was recruited.

Now I will explain using the example of two accounts. They both hit the million mark, but they did it in different ways, and the consequences are different.

In the first case, there were 4 giveaways, +500 thousand in 3 months, and in the second, a specific set of 800 thousand subscribers in 20 days of promotion.

And here we come to the topic of the article.

If in the first case I understand how they got millions of subscribers, then in the second I don't. Therefore, I start to “dig” - I want to know what and how they do in order to get so many subscribers. And it's simple - can I do the same or not, without big budgets anywhere?

So the article is not even about getting subscribers, but about how to find out what they did to get them. Step by step:

Instagram account promotion analysis

Step 1. Who was eventually collected

We are looking at averages now:

We see a million subscribers. We see an ER of 9.4% (if they didn’t cheat, then that’s cool). We see that 21.27 posts were posted per week (3 posts per day?).

A little about the "object of study".

OnePlus is an electronics brand. They launched a new OnePlus Nord phone, a sub-flagship (powerful phone, but not the coolest phone from the manufacturer). I am interested in the topic, so I came across the article “OnePlus Nord breaks records” in the issue. The article is stupid clickbait, but I was interested in how such a company works with insta.

Therefore, we will continue our study now. I must say right away that it seems to me that these people came from the main account of the brand.

We can see from the growth graph of subscribers that they gained them quickly (on July 13, the growth started, on July 15 they slowed down a little, on July 17 the growth continued, on July 22 they slowed down).

We see that they were moving first of all to India (the cities are also Indian).

The audience is real. And why should they cheat :)

3 comments per 100 likes is a lot. Maybe contests.

I checked - these are posts on July 22, the day of the presentation, when all the information was posted. In total, it was a simple check for cheating on Instagram - we see that the account is doing well. Now we understand which country we were moving towards and we understand that most likely we didn’t cheat. Let's analyze further.

Step 2. Building a timeline :)

This is optional, but it helps me to understand better.

Usually this is just a tablet in excel - date, event, what happened. But for you, I'll start drawing it:

Step 3. Looking for donors

347 mentions, but I'm interested in those mentions that most likely paid for. Therefore, I add a filter by the number of subscribers (more than 500 thousand subscribers). It turned out 40 mentions. Among them are:

What we see:

  • Drive traffic from their OnePlus (3.2m) and OnePlus India(2.8m) accounts
  • Buy traffic from bloggers with hashtag #OnePlusNord
  • Spend a Giveaway

What else do we see?

  • They buy both posts and stories
  • Some posts have already been deleted o_O
  • Traffic leads to the account, to the site, to Amazon (apparently agreed on the CPS scheme)

But let's go in order.

Step 4. Restore history

Announce the account on their main accounts. The first bloggers report collaboration.

They upload a video with a documentary, announce an AR presentation, specialized magazines write about it (it seems to me even for free).

09/07 - 12/07

I can't say for sure - the posts have been deleted, but it looks like they started running ads through bloggers

The beginning of a large campaign in "uniform style".

To be honest, I don't know much about Indian bloggers, but I understand it like this: local celebrities and bloggers write: “I am such and such and found #MyNord in dance. Subscribe, post with the hashtag and win merch."

Total 618 posts, including fans.

Although I don't think they were betting on user generated content (UCG):

Most likely they didn't come up with a cooler way to integrate ads.

July 13 also announced that the presentation will be July 21.

14/07 - 21/07

Blogger placements continue. What else interesting we tried:

  • Integration with an entertaining public dictionary. That is, they wrapped the advertisement in deciphering the concept. I would translate it like this: “A pure thrill is to unpack a new phone that has been waiting for so long. Tag those who really need a new phone.”
  • Bloggers of other directions. On the screen is a culinary blogger. He says that he is waiting for a presentation in AR, he made his own avatar and calls for making his own avatars.
  • Blogger photographer. Hannes Becker designed phone filters. For phones, these are must-have bloggers now.

In this case, I do not see any activity on YouTube, or on Facebook, or on Twitter. Maybe I don't know any popular platform in India, or maybe they promoted Instagram in the first place.

Apparently there are services that store this information.

I think it would be possible to dig further.

Step by step I see this:

  • Have an account with 3 million subscribers :)
  • Drive traffic from your accounts
  • Buy advertising from celebrity bloggers (be sure to try 3 or more options)
  • Buy advertising from bloggers with a different theme and promise to distribute merch

As I see it, there is no magic. There are people who methodically and clearly do their job.

But I won't kid myself that it's easy. If we dig deeper, we can see that in this case they focused on one country, worked with the visual and text of the posts, they had a clear schedule and tight deadlines.
