3 Ways to Tag Someone in Your Instagram Story Without Their Name Showing

By Denise Lim

If you want to tag someone in your Instagram story without their handle taking up space, here's how.

It’s fun to share snippets of your life with family and friends via Instagram Stories. You can mention people in your story so that they can re-share those captured moments in their story as well.

But how do you mention others in your story, without the usernames crowding the screen? Let’s look at the different ways to mention someone in your Instagram story without their username showing up.

1. Swipe the Username Off the Borders of Your Smartphone Screen

After you have added a mention for your family or friend on the Instagram story, tap Done to exit the text window. Next, tap and hold the mentioned username as you usually would to reposition it. But this time, swipe it off the borders of your phone screen until it’s no longer visible.

This may take some practice. During the first few attempts, you may notice that the “tail” of the mentioned username still sticks out if you moved the username too slowly. The key is doing a quick, solid swipe to make it disappear off-screen in one motion.

2. Use a Sticker to Hide the Username

Using Instagram stickers is one of the ways to make your Instagram Stories stand out. These stickers enable you to add elements such as music, a small animation, or your location to a story.

To use a sticker to hide your friend’s username, you need to add the mention first. Next, tap the Sticker icon and choose a solid-colored sticker. Some stickers offer different format options. Tap Done to exit the sticker window once you selected your preferred style.

Then, tap and hold the sticker to reposition it and cover the username.

3. Use a Shared Post to Hide the Username

If you have shared an Instagram post to your story, you can mention your friends in the story without having their usernames showing up as well. Instead of using a sticker, you can use the shared post itself to hide the username.

Once you added the mention, tap and hold the shared post to reposition it and cover the name.

In a tag vs. @mention dilemma?

Should you simply tag people or @mention them? The two terms are very popular. However, many people, especially new users, don’t know their differences. Thankfully, we are here to clear out your confusion.

When it comes to Instagram stories, there is no difference between the two. Anytime you mention someone in your story, you are also tagging them. Simple!

However, when making a feed post, the two differ. Immediately after you tag someone to a photo, they receive a notification about it. You can view the people tagged in a photo by tapping on the photo once.

Apart from this, when you tag someone in your photo, the photo automatically saves in the tagged photos section of their profile. As such,  anyone who visits the person’s profile can view the photo. Note, however, that the tagged person can remove themselves if they don’t like the post you’ve tagged them in.

To tag someone to your post, tap the “Tag photo” field under Caption and type in their username.

Regarding mentions in feed posts, you can only @mention someone in the caption or the comment section. Unlike tags, @mentions don’t appear on the photo when tapped.  Also, the people you mention in your feed post will receive a notification about it. But the photo is not saved on their feed.

Note that: Instagram stories allow you to only tag or mention up to 10 people or places per photo or video. This is irrespective of the types of content you upload to your stories.

For feed posts, you can only Tag up to 20 people or places per photo and Mention only 10 per photo.

Also, you cannot tag people, businesses, or products that don’t appear in the photo. You may also need to take permission from people before tagging them.

How to tag someone in an Instagram Story

  1. Open your Instagram app.
  2. Click on the “+” button at the top right corner of your screen and select Story or swipe right from anywhere in the feed.
  3. Take or select a photo or video from your gallery and then tap on the “Aa” icon.
  4. Type @ followed immediately by the username, then choose the person or business you would like to mention.
  5. Click on Done, then tap Send to or the “>” icon.
  6. Click on Your story and then tap Done or Share. You are good to go!

Extra tips:

  • Instagram features many beautiful text styles. These will help you customize your mentions and possibly rake in more double taps. Presently, there are nine of them. You’ll find the text styles right above the keyboard. Horizontally scroll through the styles and tap on your choice.
  • If you’re very particular about making your text beautiful, you’ll find more settings at the top of the screen to help you achieve this. Examples are text alignment, color, text background, and spacing.
  • You can also use the mention sticker. Click on the smiley face icon at the top of the screen, right after the “Aa” icon. Tap the “@Mention” option, and type in the username of the person you wish to tag. Then, click on their profile once it appears. You can change the appearance of the sticker by tapping on it and making a choice.
  • With social media tools like Later, Hootsuite and Planoly, you can schedule your Instagram stories to air at your convenience.

How to tag a person in Instagram Stories: tagging in Stories

In September 2018, Instagram introduced the ability to make mentions in Stories. This allows you to tag a person in the Instagram Story, both in the video and in the photo. No more than 10 people can be tagged in one Story.

Using mentions, you can tag friends, colleagues and any other accounts. Thanks to the new sticker, you no longer need to manually type the user's nickname in text format. Just start typing the first letters of the name and Instagram will prompt the right user. nine0003

On their posts, they most often tag either friends who are present in the photo, or brands whose products are also present in the photo.

In both cases, your post will appear in the tagged account in the "Tagged" section. If the account that you mark as closed, then your photo will be seen only by those users who are subscribed to the marked account. nine0125

Thus, any user who logs into your friend's account, for example, can see your joint photo and go to your account. The reach is also given by the marks of friends and brands, but in the second case it is many times more. Even better, if you not only take a photo with the brand's products, but also write a review or rank the top products that you like. Then it is more likely that the brand will publish your post in their account and tag you.

Content that users create for other users is called UGC. You can read more about how UGC content works, what it is and why brands need it in the article “How UGC content works on social networks”. nine0003

To tag an account while posting, click "Tag users", select the area on the photo where you want to tag. For example, if you want to tag a brand of glasses in a photo, click on the glasses. After a new window will open with a search bar, find the desired account and select it.

If you want to tag an account in a post that has already been published, open the desired post, click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select "Edit" to edit the post. In the lower left corner, click on the little man. Then you know what to do. nine0003

If your post did not appear in the account that was tagged, it means that the account owner has enabled pre-moderation and manually adds tagging. Either he didn't approve of your mark, or he simply forgets to check for new marks. The switch to manual tagging was provoked by spammers who randomly tag accounts on contest and other posts.

Thus, you can draw the attention of a friend to some kind of post, most often humorous. Or fulfill the condition of the contest - tag friends in the comments to the post. nine0003

How to tag a person in your story on Instagram

The traffic in the Stories section is not inferior to the feed views, so many promotion mechanics have spread here as well.
For example, holding contests in which the user must screenshot something, post it in their Stories and tag the account of the contest organizer. Mutual PR with another account or the same UGC. There are two ways to tag in Instagram stories.

Method 1. Upload/take a photo/video to stories, click on "Aa" in the upper right corner. Type the name of the desired account through @ and select the desired account. nine0003

If there is no underline under the name, then the account name is most likely a mistake and the mark will not be clickable.

Method 2. Almost the same as the first, only a separate “Mention” sticker is used for marking. You can change the background of the sticker, otherwise there are no differences.

10 accounts can be marked in one story. The tag is clickable and anyone viewing stories can go to the account you tag. The account that you tagged will receive a notification in Direct about the tagging and the opportunity to add this stories to yourself. nine0003

Instagram tags can be used to increase the organic reach of your account. For example, by marking accounts of brands whose products are present in the photo.

Or you can create several Instagram accounts for each product/service (if you don't have a website and a small number of products, otherwise you'll be tormented) and tag them in the main account. By the same principle, you can create a quest game, for example, as @gla_build_your_own did. This is a prime example of how you can use seemingly primitive functions on Instagram in a non-standard way. nine0003
