How to Make a Telegram Account on Your Phone and Desktop

The cross-platform chat app Telegram has seen a surge in popularity amid concerns over data sharing on its Facebook-owned competitor WhatsApp. And while Telegram isn't entirely secure, many users trust it over other similar apps.

You can easily create a Telegram account for free; all you need is an Android or iOS device with a working phone number to get started.

Once registered, you'll also be able to log into Telegram's web and desktop apps, where you can send and receive messages from your browser, desktop, laptop, or tablet. You won't need to provide any additional info when logging into those apps, but you should still have your phone handy. 

Here's how to make a Telegram account on your mobile device, and log into the Telegram desktop or browser-based web app.  

How to make a Telegram account on the mobile app

1. Download the Telegram app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

2. Launch the Telegram app and tap "Start Messaging." 

3. Enter your phone number, including the country code. On an iPhone, tap "Next," and on an Android, tap the blue arrow to continue.

4. Telegram will send you a text message to verify the phone number belongs to you. Check your messages, then copy and enter the code into the app and tap "Next" or the blue arrow.

5. Fill out your first name, last name, and add a profile picture if you'd like. You don't have to enter your real name, or give a real picture of yourself. Tap "Next" or the blue arrow when you're done.

After you sign up, Telegram will ask for permission to access your contacts and call log, and make and receive calls using your phone. You can give or restrict these permissions however you like.

How to log into the Telegram desktop or web app

1. Open the browser of your choice and go to desktop.telegram.org to download the desktop app for your operating system.

2. Launch the Telegram desktop app, then select "Start Messaging."

3. A QR code will become visible on the screen. To activate it, open the Telegram app on your phone and go to "Settings," then tap "Devices."

4. Tap "Scan QR Code" and hold the camera up to the QR code in the desktop app.

5. After scanning the code, you'll be logged into your account. You can now begin chatting in Telegram on the desktop app.

If you'd rather not use the app, you can also go to web.telegram.org for an entirely browser-based experience. To log in here, enter the phone number connected to your account, then enter the code that's sent to your phone. You'll be immediately logged into your Telegram account.

How to Create a Telegram Account From a PC

Follow these steps to create your Telegram account from an iOS mobile device:

  1. Download Telegram Messenger from the Apple Store.
  2. Open the app when it finishes downloading.
  3. Tap the “Start Messaging” button to sign up.
  4. Choose your country.
  5. Enter your phone number and tap “Next.”
  6. Enter the SMS Verification code that will arrive by text.
  7. Type your full name to finish the set-up process.
  8. Your account is ready to use. Go to the Settings (on the top left side) to personalize it with a username and profile picture.

These are the steps to create your Telegram account from an Android device:

  1. Download the Telegram app for Android from the Google Play Store.
  2. Launch the app.
  3. Tap “Start Messaging.”

  5. Tap “Continue” (the blue arrow).
  6. Enter the code from the text from Telegram and “Continue” (use the blue arrow).

Next, download the Telegram Desktop app as follows:

  1. Scroll down the Telegram Desktop app page. Click the download version for your computer.

  4. Select “Install” to finish the installation.
  5. Tap “Finish” when installation is complete.

You can now set up your Telegram account for your computer. Here are the steps:

  3. Enter the phone number you used with your mobile device account.
  4. Tap “NEXT” to receive the verification code text message.
  5. Enter the verification code.
  6. Tap “NEXT” to finish the configuration. Your account is ready to use on your PC.

You can go directly to your browser if you do not want to use the app on your PC. Go to this website and choose one of two options:

Make sure the phone number you use is connected to your account. A code will be sent to your phone. Enter the code, and you will be logged into your Telegram Messenger account.

How to Create a Telegram Account From an iPhone

Installing and setting up a Telegram account with an iPhone is fast and easy. Just follow the steps below to get started with your new account:

  1. Download Telegram Messenger in the Apple Store.
  2. Open Telegram and tap “Start Messaging.”
  3. Choose your country.
  4. Input your phone number.
  5. Tap “Next” and enter the code that Telegram will send via text message.
  6. Put in your name. Personalize your account using the “Settings” menu.

A valid phone number is required for a Telegram account.

If you don’t enter the validation code within three minutes, Telegram will call you with a code. Although you’re allowed three accounts on the Telegram app, you must use a different number for each account.

Here’s how to hide your phone number when you set up a Telegram account on an iPhone:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Go to the “Settings” menu in the top left corner.
  3. Select “Privacy and Security” and then “Phone Number.”

How to Create a Telegram Account From an Android Device

Since you can’t set up a Telegram on your PC, your next best bet is to grab your smartphone. If you have an Android device, it only takes a handful of steps to get started.

First, you’ll need to download the Telegram Messaging app in the Google Play Store. Once your app is installed, take a look at the set-up process below:

  1. Launch Telegram.
  2. Tap “Start Messaging” to begin set-up.
  3. Enter your country code and phone number.
  4. Tap the blue arrow to continue.
  5. Check your device and enter the verification code in the text from Telegram.
  6. Enter your name.
  7. Add a profile picture in the “Settings” menu (top left of the screen).

You do not have to use your real name to create an account and can choose a username to associate with it instead. Also, you can add three accounts with different phone numbers on the Telegram app for Android. If you need to switch between accounts, go to the side menu on the app.

Additionally, you can hide your phone number when you create a Telegram account. To do so, open the app on your Android device and do the following:

  1. Tap the menu in the top left corner (three vertical lines).
  2. Select “Settings.”
  3. Choose the “Privacy and Security” option.
  4. Tap “Phone Number” to view the “Who Can See My Number” option.
  5. Change the option to “My Contacts” or “Nobody. ”

A new section will open if you choose “Nobody.” This is the “Who Can Find Me by My Number” option where you can change this setting to “My Contacts” for added security. Remember to save your choices by tapping the checkmark in the upper right corner.

Keep in mind that Telegram Messenger must have a phone number to create your account. Although some users choose not to provide their number for security reasons, you can get an alternate phone number free from any number of online providers. These alternate phone numbers are often called “burner numbers.”

Here’s how to use a “burner number” to create a Telegram account:

  1. Install and launch the app for your device or computer.
  2. Tap “Start Messaging” and “OK.”
  3. Tap “OK” on the “Please allow Telegram to receive calls…” screen.
  4. Tap “Deny” on the “Allow Telegram to make and manage phone calls?” screen.
  5. Enter your alternate number.
  6. The app will again ask to receive, make, and manage calls. Tap “Deny.”

Enter the code in the verification text. Continue the set-up process for your PC or mobile device as outlined above.
