How to see the total number of likes on instagram
How to See Likes on Instagram in 2022 (even hidden likes)
Instagram is famous for the heart button users can double-tap posts to show content some love. Until recently, like counts were public throughout the Instagram app, but changes are already happening.
Instagram has taken its community’s feedback on board1 and decided to become a place where people can comfortably express themselves without feeling pressured to generate high engagement.
The decision is part of the platform’s founders’ efforts to transform Instagram into a place where users can focus on the media they share – not the number of likes that might set them apart from more popular accounts.
Let’s take a closer look at how, exactly, these changes have been rolled out, how they are going to affect marketing on Instagram, and how to see likes on Instagram regardless of those changes (including hidden likes).

What has changed?
You may be wondering – why can’t I see likes on Instagram?
The changes come down to the fact that Instagram will no longer publicly display the number of likes generated by posts if a user chooses to hide likes on his IG posts.
This means that the exact number of likes given to any individual photo or video will only be known to the user who posted it.
Prior to Instagram’s updates, this is how the platform’s users would see how many likes a post has generated:
The New YorkerThe post-rollout view is different: the information beneath posts with multiple engagements mentions that the image or video has been “Liked by username and others.”
Instagram hiding likes – source: Bon AppetitThe word ‘others’ is a link that, once tapped, redirects to a complete list of users who have liked the post. It is, therefore, technically possible to manually count the number of likes of any given post – but, in the case of large posts with thousands (or millions!) of engagements, it would be a ridiculously tedious task.
The rollout started in Canada in April 2019. The update was later introduced in Ireland, Japan, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil.
Why is Instagram hiding likes?
Instagram is currently one of the world’s largest social media platforms. Focused on visual content, Facebook’s sister app has proven to have an enormous impact on modern culture.
Over the last decade, Instagram has been instrumental in shaping fashion and beauty trends. It was the birthplace of original, sometimes odd phenomena (virtual celebrities, pet influencers, and even the Instagram face).
It brought fame and money to many – and sparked the dream to pursue fame and money online in many more.
Finally, the platform played a substantial role in the creation of high-quality and aesthetic standards for what people share online.
Every Instagram user knows the seemingly effortless yet stunningly stylish snippets of other people’s daily lives (#iwokeuplikethis), travels, meals, and so on.
Unfortunately, not everyone is able to tell that some – if not most – of them are meticulously staged and hardly representative of anyone’s real life. Thanks, Dan Bilzerian!
The fact that professional influencers coexist with ‘casual’ users on the platform and the lines between both groups are blurred was bound to cause some issues.
With all content ‘judged’ with one universal tool – likes – Instagram has, over time, become a popularity contest of sorts.
And since certain lifestyles, beauty standards, and activities consistently collected higher numbers of likes than others, large parts of Instagram’s user community eventually started feeling insecure and inadequate about their own content, and, in consequence, their lifestyles, resources, and overall wellbeing.
This brings us to the point. The decision-makers at Instagram name their concern for the platform’s users’ mental health as the main reason to give users the possibility to hide likes. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s CEO, tweeted:
Our interest in hiding likes really is just to depressurize Instagram for young people. It’ll likely effect how much some people engage on Instagram, probably liking a bit less and posting a bit more, but the main thing we’re trying to learn is how this effects how people feel.
So, to sum it up: Instagram is changing the way users view likes to bring back the joy of posting to those who were negatively affected by the competitive implications of publicly displayed engagement scores.
The platform’s management is hoping to see more users post regularly and publish what they truly want to share without worrying about how their content will be received and how it will rank against popular posts on Instagram.
How will businesses on Instagram be affected?
The way Instagram decided to look out for the mental health of its users is a much-needed act of social responsibility that will hopefully inspire other social media giants. But over the last few years, the platform has become more than just an outlet for self-expression.
In 2019, over 25 million brands big and small were using Instagram as part of their social media marketing strategies. How will Instagram’s decision to hide likes affect their efforts?
1. Tracking competitors on Instagram will change
Likes are a social media marketing metric that has traditionally been used to measure the success of Instagram content.
Brands will still be able to apply this to their own posts – as we mentioned before, every Instagram account owner will have access to the exact number of likes their posts generate.
But success is relative. Without being able to check in on how activations similar to yours are going on competitors’ accounts, how will you know whether your campaign is actually going well?

2. Assessing Instagram influencers will become more difficult
Engagement is also an important metric that defines the success of Instagram influencers. Brands are willing to invest significant sums into influencer campaigns if they know that the person they work with has a loyal and interactive following.
Without public access to the likes metric, the process of scouting influencers for paid campaigns and negotiating rates will likely become a bit more complicated.
3. No more buying likes
As Instagram became a popularity contest, the desire to collect high numbers of likes got out of hand. Several businesses bypassing Instagram’s terms of service and selling likes popped up, and many personal and business accounts used such services to boost their visible engagement and appear more credible on the platform.
Since likes are going to be less visible on Instagram, fake engagement will no longer serve its questionable purpose, and the shady practice of buying likes is bound to disappear naturally. Yay!
The solution on how to see Instagram likes again
Instagram is doing what it can to protect its community – and that’s great news. But the platform is not turning its back on businesses in the process, even if the implications discussed above might seem like a burden to marketers.
Here’s the thing: you will still be able to view Instagram likes, just not on Instagram.
While the vanity metric is no longer going to be a concern of the general public, marketers will be able to still access it through specialized social media management tools.
Here’s how to see Instagram likes – tools like NapoleonCat still allow you to view the exact numbers of likes – and other engagements – for any public Business or Creator Account you follow.

Wrap up
Instagram’s decision to hide likes is rooted in how influential the platform has become for modern culture. And while experts predict the changes will have a positive effect on the platform’s users, the update will also pose some challenges for brands using Instagram as a marketing and sales tool.
Influencer marketing will have to adapt to the new reality – but specialized social media management tools with access to Instagram’s API will allow for a smooth transition.

Checking Instagram likes does not seem to be a tough task. It is probably the simplest metric that you can track when analyzing your Instagram results. But, whether you like it or not, there are some more complex metrics bound to Instagram likes, and they go far beyond the number of hearts left under your Instagram posts.
Read on if you want to learn more about them.
2 ways of checking your Instagram likesThe easiest way to check your Instagram likes is to see the exact numbers of likes under your posts. As an Instagram account owner, you are able to see such numbers for your own content.
Also, if you want to see an overall number of your Instagram likes during a selected time period, you can easily check it in your Instagram Insights. If you’re logged into your business account, select the ‘Insights’ button visible under your bio. In the right upper corner, you can select the dates for which you want to track likes on your profile.
Once you select the dates, go to ‘Account engagement’ and scroll down to ‘Interactions with posts’. You will see an overall number of likes that you gathered during the selected period.
Another, a bit more structured way of checking your Instagram likes, is to use a social media analytics tool like Sotrender. In Sotrender, not only can you check an overall number of likes on your account during a selected time period, but you can also track how many likes did you gather on particular dates.
Likes are most probably not the only thing that you need to monitor on your Instagram profile, so choosing an advanced social media tool will simply pay off, as it will deliver you a lot of useful insights.
How to check the number of Instagram likes in Sotrender?Checking the number of Instagram likes in Sotrender is super easy. Simply log in to the app and connect an Instagram account that you want to analyze.
Then, the quickest way to check your user activities on Instagram, with Instagram likes amongst them, is to head over to the Profile overview, and click on the User activities chart. After that, apply the dates for which you want to analyze user activities on your profile.
If it comes to Instagram activities, Sotrender measures 4 of them:
- Comments,
- Likes,
- Saves,
- Replies.
Thanks to color themes, you can quickly see the number of likes on particular days (and same to other activities). Below the chart, you can check the sum of certain reactions over the chosen time period.
Another way of checking your Instagram likes is to go directly to the ‘’Content’ tab and see ‘Top posts’. Then, you can view all brand’s posts that appeared on your profile in the selected time period, with all important stats attached to them.
Apart from likes, you can also go through the numbers such as:
- Reach,
- Impressions,
- Activity Index,
- Comments,
- Saves.
All posts can be sorted by the above-mentioned metrics. Hence, you can quickly get to know which of the posts gained the biggest reach, and which one had, for example, the biggest number of saves, which will help you to optimize your future content creations.
What more can you learn about user activities on Instagram?Another complex metric related to user activities on Instagram is Activity Index. Simply put, it is the collective weighted rate of user activities on a brand’s profile. This metric takes into account two kinds of reactions: likes and comments, though in our scale, likes are less valuable than comments (the weights are as follows: likes – 1, comments – 8).
All in all, the Activity Index informs about the quality of engagement on your Instagram profile and gives you an idea how much your audience gets involved with your content.
How to check other users’ Instagram likes?Up until recently, checking other profiles’ likes on Instagram was quite easy. The numbers of likes were displayed right under posts, and could have been seen by anyone. However, since Instagram made it possible for every user to hide the number of likes under every post, it is no longer that simple and obvious.
Of course, some of the profiles still allow other users to see how many likes they have under their posts. But you will also come across profiles which disabled this function since they do not want others to see their likes count.
So now, without access to a third party analytics tool, you won’t be able to thoroughly monitor the number of likes that other profiles are getting.
How to get more likes on Instagram?Well, now you know how to track your Instagram likes over time. But what if the stats are not satisfying enough? Is there a way to improve your likes count?
Of course, there is! Take a look at the examples below:
- Find the right hashtags so that you can reach a wider audience.
- Tag users so that they can like and re-share your content.
- Tag your location to make your posts more visible.
- Post high quality content and learn how to write catchy captions.
- Run a contest which focuses on gathering likes under your post.
Good luck!

Accounts Reached - is the total number of people who saw your posts, Stories and IGTV) in a week, plus a comparison with last week. You can wind them up and go to the author’s account, especially if you don’t have enough 1000 subscribers and can’t wait to get new statistics right now. This will not hit the account engagement much. But ideally, of course, you need to grow organically, with the help of advertising from bloggers and targeting.

How to use Instagram account statistics?
Do not draw conclusions after the first week, how to connect free statistics on Instagram. Check how it will change for at least a month. Compare weekdays, weekends and holidays, good/bad weather outside.
Don't be in a hurry to "give it all away" if your coverage dropped in late spring and summer. Previously, no one had such statistics, and people who do not know the general trends in social networks and the Internet are afraid of fluctuations in statistics in their Instagram account. In the fall and after the New Year holidays, there is always an increase, and in the spring and summer there is an outflow. Of course, this does not apply to "seasonal" businesses (spring-summer travel agencies have growth, for example).
Even though many of us have a smartphone as an extension of our hand, we still scroll through Instagram less when we are on vacation, it’s summer outside, etc. Therefore, do not rush to arrange another giveaway or pour extra money on advertising if your coverage decline is seasonal. But do not abandon your account, if necessary, make pending posts for the holidays. Then even if you yourself are resting, you will still flicker in the feed of subscribers.
You will have the most reliable statistics a year after you make it. Therefore, it is best if you monitor your indicators on Instagram and write them down separately, noting what you did - cheating, advertising with bloggers, advertising (targeting), other promotion methods.
how to view statistics on Instagram? – Wezom
In 2022, the popular app celebrates its 12th anniversary. According to CEO Adam Mosseri, Instagram is no longer a "square photo-sharing app." And indeed, in recent years, the service has seriously transformed. Its business functions, user base, algorithms and technological capabilities have evolved. Statistics show that 90% of web users follow at least one company, so developing an Instagram marketing strategy is a step forward. As you know, the implementation of strategic plans is impossible without monitoring the account development indicators. So Instagram statistics are something that you should pay special attention to. We plan to tell you about it.
How can Instagram statistics be useful?
Want to measure your Instagram marketing success and optimize your posts for greater impact? To achieve these goals, Instagram account statistics are primarily used. Data collection and subsequent analysis allows you to track progress, identify trends and assess the target audience in more detail. You can also get information about which hashtags are used most often, which photos cause the most engagement, and what time is best to post them.
All of these indicators are valuable because they give an idea of what is being done well and what needs to be changed. In addition, it will be possible to compare your results with competitors.
The general benefits of using Instagram analytics are as follows:
- there is a real opportunity to adjust your strategy and achieve success in promotion. Data on what type of content is appreciated by your audience, with which it interacts better, helps to optimize the campaign and increase conversion;
- you can get to know your target audience better. The account owner gets access to data on gender, age, location, language, etc. The more detailed they are, the better you can understand your audience and prepare content based on the interests of subscribers and purchasing behavior on the Web;
- resources and time are distributed efficiently. Statistics show what content the target audience considers valuable, and what is not particularly liked and needs to be updated. It is easy to understand where to direct your efforts;
- patterns of business development become clear. Instagram analysis is used to compare performance over different periods. This allows you to see what was done during the peaks.
The use of statistical data ensures that the business owner does not take risks when he makes changes to his strategy, since the decision is based on real indicators. It is this approach that our specialists use when they offer to use the service - promotion on Instagram.

What affects Instagram statistics?
So, we have already studied how to view statistics on Instagram. Now we offer some tips on what to do to attract new users to the page.
Quality content
Today, many people say that glossy perfection is going out of fashion, but for now, the “heart of Instagram” is visual content. To be original in this, remember that users value diversity and authenticity most of all in expressing their ideas.
Many even advise not to edit photos too much to make them look natural. It is equally important to stick to a visually consistent feed and branding.
Take care of the text. Keep it short and to the point, add emoji (but don't overdo it!), don't forget the hashtags.
A clear strategy and our recommendations on how to create a content plan for Instagram will help you streamline your work and reach a new level. Then the publications will come out just in time without force majeure.
Audience Engagement
Instagram is overflowing with mediocre posts from brands that forget social media is supposed to be a "platform for visual inspiration."
Captivate and connect with your audience. To do this, run contests, respond to comments, become a storyteller who offers “micro stories” through captions, videos, Instagram stories and a profile. Actively share user-generated content that matches your brand.
When people feel an emotional connection, they are more likely to remember your company and tell their friends about it.
