If you’re also affected by this issue, which seems to be quite widespread, follow us in this article as we detail some methods that could potentially correct the problem.

1. Enable “Save to Gallery”

In Telegram, the option to automatically save incoming photos and videos might need to be activated manually from the mobile app (not from the desktop one). If you just installed the app on your device, you need to enable this option to ensure that all the pics you receive via chat will automatically show up in your Gallery app. Below we detail the steps for both Telegram for Android and iOS.

Android

  1. Open the Telegram app on your device.
  2. Tap on the hamburger menu in the upper left corner of the display.
  1. Select Settings.
  1. Tap on “Chat Settings.”
  1. Scroll all the way to the bottom until you find the “Save to Gallery” option and toggle it on.

Now Telegram should automatically start saving the photos and videos you’ve received directly to your phone’s gallery. If you ever change your mind, you can easily retrace the steps and turn off the feature to ensure images don’t get automatically saved anymore. If you do this, you can still save important pictures manually, while saving precious space on your device.

iOS

On iOS the same option is called “Save Incoming Photos. ” This is how you can activate it on your device.

  1. Open the Telegram app on your iPhone.
  2. Go to Settings.
  1. Then tap on “Data and Storage.”
  1. Scroll down until you find the “Save Incoming Photos” options and press on it.
  1. Enable the option for Contacts, Other Private Chats, Group Chats, and Channels as required.

Now the media you receive while chatting in Telegram should be automatically saved to your iPhone’s gallery.

2. Grant Storage Permission (Android)

Another thing you want to try is to make sure your Telegram app has storage permission. Depending on what version of Android is running on your phone you might have to grant “Files and media” permission instead.

  1. Find the Telegram app on your phone and long press on its app icon.
  2. Tap on the “Info” or “App info” button that pops up.
  1. Select “Permissions.”
  1. If you’re running an older version of Android (the device in the screenshots is running Android 7. 0) you will need to tap on “Storage” to enable the option.

Alternatively, if you’re running Android 11 or 12, you should see the “Files and media” option under “Permissions.”

Tap on it and check to see if the “Allow access to media only” feature is on. If it’s not, activate it.

3. Enable the Option to Auto-Download Media

If you’re constantly switching between your Wi-Fi and data, you need to activate the “Enable auto-download media” option to make sure a photo or video doesn’t slip through the cracks while you’re in-between. These instructions apply to both Android and iOS devices.

  1. Open the Telegram app on your phone.
  2. Tap on the hamburger menu in the upper left corner.
  1. Select Settings.
  1. Press on “Data and Storage.”
  1. Toggle on the “When using mobile data” option if it’s not enabled. The “When connected on Wi-Fi” featured should be on, but if it’s not make sure to activate that as well.

4. Update the App

If photos and videos aren’t showing up in your gallery it might be due to a bug and so your app needs to be updated. Go to the Google Play Store, search for the app and see if you can spot an “Update” button underneath.

If it’s not there and it simply says “Open” then it means that the app is running the latest version that is available for your region.

On iOS devices, go to the App Store and update your app from there, if an update is available.

If the problem persists, keep your eyes out for updates. The issue appears to be quite common, so if the most recent update doesn’t fix it, the next one might (assuming the problem is not due to the other aspects detailed above).

5. Restart Your Phone

If nothing changes after you’ve updated the app, you could also try restarting your phone just for good measure. Doing this will flush your system’s memory and get rid of any errors that might be causing Telegram not to automatically save your photos to the Gallery app on your phone. To restart your device, simply long press on the power button for a few seconds until a bunch of options pop up on the screen. Select “Restart.”

6. Check Telegram Servers

If you still can’t get the option to function properly, then we suggest that you check Telegram servers, as there might be a problem with the app itself that might cause it to act this way. Simply go to a website like Downdetector and search for Telegram. Check out the Telegram outages report graphic. If it’s going through the roof, then you know you’re not doing anything wrong on your end and you just have to wait until Telegram fixes the issue.

7. Save Photos and Other Media Manually

When all else has failed, the only solution left at your disposal might be to manually save the photos or videos from the app. This is how you can do it on your mobile device.

Android

  1. Open up a chat that contains a media file you want to save.
  2. Tap on the media file to open it.
  3. Tap on the three-dots in the upper right corner of the display.
  1. Select “Save to Gallery.”

Now go to your phone’s Gallery, and you should be able to see the picture there.

On Android, this option can sometimes malfunction. If you’re having issues seeing your received photos and videos in the Gallery after manually saving them, try updating the app or installing the APK from the official Telegram website.

iOS

Here’s how you can manually save images on iOS.

  1. Open a chat that contains a media file you wish to save to your gallery.
  2. Tap on the file.
  3. Now press on the little forwarding icon in the lower left corner.
  1. Select the “Save Image” option at the bottom. Telegram will ask permission to access Photos and once you’ve granted it, the image will show up in your gallery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Telegram automatically save images sent via secret chats to the Gallery app?

The answer is no. Secret chats are a private form of communication and so Telegram will disable the auto-save option for these chats, even if the “Save to Gallery” feature is enabled otherwise. If you want, however, you can manually save pictures that are sent via secret chats. The other party won’t be notified that you’ve done so.

Does Telegram for desktop automatically save images?

In theory, it should. If you go to “Settings -> Advanced,” you should be able to find the “Automatic media download” option which is enabled by default in private chats, groups, and channels. So technically, Telegram desktop should save images you’ve received to the “Downloads” folder.

However, in our case this doesn’t appear to work.

The solution would be to instead click on any of the images you’ve received and then hit the “Save” icon in the lower right corner of the display. This automatically saves the picture to “Downloads.” If you wish to change the folder where you save the images, simply click on the three-dots (also in the lower right corner) and select “Save as.”

Will Telegram delete media from the cloud chats that I haven't accessed in a while?

No. By default, Telegram is set to store pictures/videos you’ve received via cloud chats indefinitely. However, to save space on your device, you can change this duration by going to “Settings -> Data and Storage -> Storage usage.” Use the slider to extend or shorten the period of time during which Telegram will keep media from chats on your device.

2016-11-15 20:23:00

Heading: News Functional

A well-chosen photograph sometimes allows you to express your own opinion much more eloquently than any words. In addition to ways to search and add images to the chat, the article will describe in detail how to save photos from Telegram in the memory of a smartphone or PC in order to add an interesting picture to your personal collection.

How to find and add an image

On mobile devices running iOS and Android, the developers of the Telegram messenger have provided a photo search function that can be used directly in the dialogue process. Let's see how it works on different operating systems. For iOS:

  1. In a regular or group chat, open the file attachment menu (paperclip button).
  2. Select "Find images".
  3. In the window that opens, select the "Images" tab.
  4. Enter the required query in the search bar.
  5. From the provided result, mark one or more interesting options and click "Send" ("Send").
  6. The picture will be added in the dialog box, while the photo will be saved to Telegram on the cloud server, so the user will have access to it from any device.

For Android:

  1. Open the file attachment menu in the dialog box.
  2. Select "Gallery".
  3. In the window that opens, click "Search web".
  4. Enter a query in the search bar.
  5. After the system finds pictures that match the query, you must mark one or more and click "Send" ("Send").
  6. The file will be added to the dialog and automatically saved to the gallery.

There is no such image search method for the desktop version of Telegram yet. However, to implement this function, you can always use the help of bots. In particular, the built-in @pic bot allows you to find the desired picture right in the dialog box. For this you need:

  1. Type @pic [request] (for example, @pic dog).
  2. The dialog box will display photo options that match your query.
  3. Select the appropriate option by clicking on it.
  4. An image with an attached link will be added to the dialog, by clicking on which you can find more photos of this topic on the Internet.

In addition, there are many thematic channels with collections of high-quality photos with any subject. For example, @photos_telegrams - the community uses a convenient tagging system that makes it easy to find the right image.

How to save a photo from Telegram to your smartphone or computer

As you know, all files sent by Telegram users in regular and group chats are stored on a cloud server. However, sometimes you need to save the picture you like on your device. To do this, perform the following manipulations:

  1. Click on the photo - for iOS and Android, or hover over it and press the left mouse button - for PC.
  2. The file will open in a new window.
  3. In the lower right corner, press the service button (three vertical dots).
  4. Select "Save" for iOS and Android, or "Save as..." for PC.
  5. On smartphones, all photos are saved by default in the "Telegram" folder, which is automatically created in the photo directory. For personal computers, you must specify the hard disk space yourself.

The second way to save pictures is even easier:

  1. Long press a photo for iOS, tap next to it for Android, or hover over a photo and right-click for PC.
  2. In the context menu, select "Save" - for iOS and Android, or "Save as ..." - for PC.
  3. The location for storing such files is determined similarly to the previous option. That is, for smartphones - the "Telegram" folder, for computers - a folder on the hard drive defined by the user.

Exception for secret chats

The above options for saving images from Telegrams are valid for standard communities, the situation is exactly the same in secret chats, except that screenshots cannot be taken.

Saving photos from TG

Downloading images is available in any version of Telegram. The user independently determines the device to which the archive is copied. In desktop versions, pictures can be uploaded to a named folder. In this case, the album does not have to be searched in the system archive of the messenger. Telegram will create a folder for export to the hard drive upon request.

In mobile versions of the app, the save path is disabled.

All data is localized in the root archive of the system memory. After each cache cleaning, photos are deleted not only from downloads, but also from the Gallery. In order not to download and copy the files again, they are moved to the SD card / drive D.

On the computer

Before I save the photo from Telegram to the PC, I set up a folder for exporting media:

  1. I open the desktop application .
  2. I go to advanced settings, section "Data and memory".
  3. Next, I activate the "Ask for the path to save the file" option.

Auto disk selection for photos is disabled.

Exporting a photo to disk.

To view images before downloading, enable auto download in the same window. If you want to save media from correspondence with friends, I click "In private chats", set the megabyte limit to the maximum value, activate the sliders with photos and files. I remember the settings.

Next steps:

  1. Go to chat.
  2. Open any picture in full screen mode.
  3. Click on the button with 3 dots, select "All photos".
  4. View a gallery of thumbnails and the Files link.
  5. Download the picture by clicking on it and selecting the download icon. Repeat the action with the rest of the downloads.
  6. View pictures in a manually specified folder.

Copying all photos automatically in the desktop version will not work. The multi-select feature is set to forward only. The only option is to export all the data at once.

On Android

For Android devices I recommend manual copying.

Instruction:

  1. Check the Telegram system folder by opening the file explorer. The archive is in the downloads branch. Open "media" and copy the data to SD, ticking the one you need. Then you can delete the unnecessary cache.
  2. If the folder is empty or inaccessible, open the "Data and memory" settings in the messenger.
  3. Activate media auto-download over mobile network or Wi-Fi. Specify a traffic limit, adjust the "Photos" / "Files" sliders.
  4. Open an image chat. Tap on the photo, then "Save to Gallery" in the 3-dot menu. Repeat the action with the remaining downloads.

The folder with downloaded pictures is stored in the smartphone's system memory by default. Therefore, duplicate the archive on SD or activate the indefinite storage of media in Telegram in the network and cache settings.

Save photos to system memory.

On iOS

Similar messenger tools are used to upload photos to Apple phones - the SavetoCameraRoll/Save to Gallery button.

Cache archive autocopy is not available because the file manager on the iPhone is protected by software and is closed to third-party explorers.

Instructions:

  1. Tap on the picture to view in full screen.
  2. In the left corner, click on the forward button.
  3. Select SavetoCameraRoll under the contact list.
  4. Allow copying the picture to the storage on the phone.

To quickly save albums on iOS, log in to the Desktop client and export.

Saving on iOS.

Downloading all photos from a Telegram chat to the "Gallery"

The first way is to ask the sender to send pictures in uncompressed format, bypassing the gallery (attaching files). In this case, the images will be uploaded as a list. The dialog will display thumbnails of pictures, their names and format.

Instructions:

  1. Long press on the first picture to bring up the multiple selection option.
  2. Click on other downloads. The download button is activated on the top panel. Click it.
  3. Open the cache folder. On smartphones, it is located in Storage Downloads. Directory for PC: "Disk C"; "Users"; "Computer name"; "Downloads"; Telegram Desktop; images.
  4. Transfer files to hard/removable disk.

The second way is to back up the information in your personal vault. To view the data, go to advanced settings from Desktop Telegram. Start the export by specifying the type of attachments (photos, files) and channels (private or public chats). The process will take from several minutes to several hours.

Download all photos.

Configuring automatic download

Telegram creates a root folder for the cache during installation. Using the archive, any media that has ever been sent to a smartphone / computer is extracted, provided that the information has not been updated. Thus, the user must configure autoload in advance and enable cache storage.

Instructions:

  1. Launch the mobile or desktop application.
  2. Open Data.
  3. Adjust Memory Usage and auto download via mobile network.
  4. Disable data savings and limits.

The files will be displayed in the Telegram Images system archive. The folder is found in the search for the explorer. You can't watch downloads from any device. If the file manager is protected by the OS, you will not be able to open the desired directory.
