This book is an attempt to tell a truly complete Instagram insider story. Such an ambitious task would have been unattainable without the participation of hundreds of people - former and current employees of the company, those who built their careers with the application, and those who competed with it. They all readily took the time to share memories that they had never shared with reporters before. For several years, I talked with the founders of Instagram - all at once and with each one individually. From the beginning of the project, I hoped to interview Mark Zuckerberg. The Facebook CEO, whom I have interviewed several times in previous years and who spent ten hours speaking before the US Congress in 2018, has become something of a villain in the public mind today. So, to tell you the whole story, by recreating Zuckerberg's words at key moments or by citing his thoughts, I relied on other people's memories. Whenever possible, I checked these memories using Facebook, but in most cases, Zuckerberg's colleagues preferred not to comment on anything in the public space.

In general, readers should not assume that the people cited in the book gave me audio-recorded dialogues. In most cases, the participants in the events retold their content from memory. Sometimes very detailed. I was as accurate as possible in presenting what I heard from my interlocutors and tried to reflect the Instagram story exactly as it is captured in the memories of everyone involved in its creation and development. With the advent of Instagram, Batman Alley has become one of Sao Paulo's top tourist spots. Via Airbnb [1] locals offer "personal paparazzi" services: for $40 they are ready to take two hours of your Instagram photos - in cities around the world this service has become one of the most popular on Airbnb.

Those who decide to manage on their own are nervous. A woman tries to calm down two small children fighting over a bottle of Coca-Cola so her sister can have her picture taken against a backdrop of blue-green peacock feathers. A teenager whose graffiti time has just run out is angry with his companion: the angle was unsuccessful. Nobody takes pictures of photographers. I came here on the recommendation of a man named Gabriel, whom I met by chance at a sushi bar on my first night in Brazil. My Portuguese was not very good to say the least, and he stepped in to help me communicate with the restaurant worker. More than 200 million Instagram users have 50,000+ followers – according to analytics firm Dovetale, this is the level at which they can start making a living collaborating with brands. Less than 0.01% of Instagram users have over a million followers. On Instagram's massive scale, that 0.00603% translates into more than 6 million Insta celebrities, most of whom have made their mark on the app. To get a sense of the scope, imagine that millions of people and brands have more followers on Instagram than the New York Times. This activity has seeped into society and affects us whether we use Instagram or not. From hotels and restaurants to big consumer brands, companies that want to grab attention are changing their space designs and the way they promote products, adjusting strategies to fit the new visual mode of communication: they need to be photo worthy for Instagram. By looking at how commercial spaces, products, and even homes are created, we can to see the influence of Instagram, although one might not so easily notice the influence of Facebook or Twitter.

For example, in my San Francisco workspace where I write a book, titles are shelved by cover color rather than title or author, a solution that only makes sense if aesthetics are more important to Instagram than content. Manhattan-based Black Tap burger chain came up with special milkshakes with whole slices of cake on top, and for months people lined up a block long to buy them. Diners rarely finished their mega-desserts, but felt compelled to photograph them. In Japan, there is a word for this Instagram design move: Insta-bae (インスタ映え), pronounced "insta-bae". In London, I spoke to a university student who explained to me that having more followers on Instagram increases the chances of being elected to a leadership role on campus. In Los Angeles, I spoke with a girl who was not yet legally allowed to drink, but thanks to a solid number of followers on Instagram, she regularly received invitations to exclusive events from club promoters. In Indonesia, I spoke to a parent whose daughter goes to school in Japan and brings back suitcases of goods every summer to sell them on Instagram. I spoke to a Brazilian couple who ran a bakery business out of the kitchen, attracting tens of thousands of followers with donuts shaped like the letters "I love you. " nine0003

Instagram has propelled careers and even entire celebrity empires. Kris Jenner, manager of the Kardashian-Jenner Family TV reality show, says Instagram has changed their lives outside of Keeping Up with the Kardashians into a 24/7 content creation and branding pipeline. Chris wakes up between 4:30 and 5:00 in the morning in a luxurious house in Hidden Hills, California and checks Instagram first thing. “I can go into the app and check on my family, my grandchildren, my business,” she explains. - What are they doing?
