How to Share Posts From the Instagram Feed to Stories -

More than 300 million users now use Instagram stories daily and posting your feed content to stories is a great way to boost reach and engagement.

In the feature’s launch blog post Instagram explained:

When you come across something in feed that inspires you — like a post from a friend raising money for a cause or a photo of a new design from your favorite brand — you can now quickly share that post as a sticker to your story for your friends and followers to see.

How to share feed posts to Instagram Stories

To share feed posts to stories:

  1. Tap the paper airplane button below the post (like you would to send a direct message)
  2. You’ll then see an option on the following menu to “Create a story with this post”
  3. Tap it to see the feed post as a sticker with a customized background ready to share to your story. You can move, resize or rotate the photo or video. You can also use drawing tools or add text and stickers.

Any post shared to a story will include a link back to the original post and include the original poster’s username.

Only posts from public Instagram accounts can be shared to stories. If you have a public account and would like to opt-out from letting people share your posts to stories, you can do so within Instagram’s settings.

How brands can use this feature

Many brands and influencers already use stories as a way to drive attention to their latest feed and promote their latest posts. This update will be a welcome improvement to this process by allowing users to directly link to their latest feed posts, rather than taking a screenshot of a post and manually adding it to stories.

As Brian mentions in the podcast, this could enable brands to use stories as a way to cross-promote their feed posts to their audience on stories — people who may have potentially missed the post in the feed.

“One of the reasons we love stories so much is that it can be used as cross-promote content and now users will be able to go from stories directly to your feed,” he explained.

Hailley also drew comparisons between this feature and Twitter’s quote tweet functionality, where users can share content from the feed, but also add their own thoughts and context around it.

This is another exciting update from Instagram — following the share to stories and live video chat announcements at F8 — and it helps to better connect the feed to stories as well as providing a way for users to re-share some of their favorite Instagram content in a more public way than sharing with a couple of friends via a direct message.

These updates now available on Android and will be coming to iOS in the coming days.

How to Share a Post on Instagram (Easy Reposting)

If Instagram isn’t yet a major part of your marketing strategy, it should be (these Instagram statistics explain why!). Instagram is the perfect platform on which to tell your brand story and show your audience a different side of your business.

So, let’s dive into the basics of using it by explaining how to share a post on Instagram – both your own and someone else’s.

How to Share Someone’s Post on Instagram (Repost)

You can also share posts from other users on Instagram – in some cases. Instagram doesn’t have a “share” button per say, but it does have that lovely little arrow icon underneath every post. However, that only allows you to share another user’s Instagram post to your Instagram Story as a sticker, and only if they haven’t disabled the ability for other users to reshare their posts. 

You’ll know right away if this is the case because once you click the arrow icon, the sharing menu appears, which will either have the option to “Add post to your Story” or not. If it’s not there, the user either has a private account or has turned off the ability for others to reshare their posts.  If the option is there, click “Add post to your Story” and then add any text or other effects you want. When you’re ready, click “Your Story” to add it to your Story for everyone to see or choose “Close Friends” if you just want to share it with a select list of your friends and family.

Using this same method, you can also send Instagram photos to other people on Instagram from within the Instagram app regardless of your device or platform (iOS / iPhone, Android).

How to Share Someone’s Posts on Your Instagram Feed

Using the Repost App

Sharing posts to your feed from influencers or an original poster is a little trickier. While there are several Instagram scheduling apps, they don’t necessarily have the capability to reshare another user’s content, and you can’t just open Instagram to execute the task. You’ll need to use a resharing app, like Repost, that connects to Instagram to help you share the post. There are other apps that function in similar ways. Still, the process is a little clunky because you need to use the app to copy a post’s link and reshare it. In other words, there’s no way to share posts from other users to your Instagram feed without leaving Instagram.

Taking a Screenshot or Using Screen-Recording

You can also take a screenshot of someone else’s post or use screen-recording to record another user’s video and then share it like you would your own posts and videos, but this should only be done when you’re following all the sharing etiquette rules (which we’ll discuss below) to the letter.

Sharing Your Own Posts on Instagram

The primary way you’ll use Instagram is to share your own posts to show up on your Instagram profile. These posts will, of course, display in other Instagram users’ feeds, too.

To share a photo, you’ll click the + shape outlined by a box in the upper part of your screen, left of the heart icon and message icon. Choose from a photo that’s already in your gallery or take a new photo or video. You can also select multiple photos to upload. Instagram will place them together in a slideshow post for others to scroll through (this is helpful if you want to tell a story with your photos or show multiple photos from the same event). Instagram also lets you upload or shoot a video to add to your feed, but it can only be up to 60 seconds long.

How to Share a Post on Instagram Stories

Uploading photos or videos to your story is a little different. Stories are beneficial for you because they sit at the top of Instagram, right in front of your followers. Each video or photo you add remains in your story for 24 hours, giving most people time to see them.

To upload to your story, you can either:

  1. Click your photo labeled “Your Story” in the top left of the home screen (this only works if you don’t currently have anything in your story), or
  2. Tap the plus icon in the upper right area of the home screen. (It’s to the left of the heart icon and the message icon.) Then, in the lower right menu, tap on “Story.”

You can either use the app to create new content for your Story or upload a photo or video from your device’s camera roll. You can only upload content created within the past 24 hours if you’re using an existing photo or video. You can also share different types of posts to your Instagram Story, such as text-based posts with a colorful background, posts with background music, Instagram Live videos, Boomerang posts (a burst of looping photos that has an animated effect), and more.

After playing around with text, stickers, and other special effects, click the “Your Story” or “Close Friends” button (depending on who you want to share it with) and then the “Share” button. To use the “Close Friends” option, you’ll need to create a list of the people you want to share these exclusive close friends-only Stories with.

Sharing Isn’t Simple on Instagram

FYou might be wondering why something as seemingly simple as sharing a social media post warrants an entire blog post. The answer: There’s no obvious share button on your own posts or even the posts of other users that makes it easy to repost content to your Instagram feed, although you can now share posts to your Instagram Story, which we’ll get into in more detail below. Whether you want to repost your own or someone else’s post on your Instagram feed or share it to your Story, we’re going to show you how to get it done. In fact, Instagram doesn’t allow you to share content (photos or videos) from outside the platform, which is why you won’t find an Instagram share button among the many social media buttons available (although you can add an Instagram follow button to your website). You can only add photos and videos directly from your smartphone or tablet.

How to Share a Post from Your Instagram Feed to Your Instagram Story

If you have a post in your Instagram Feed that you want to share to your Instagram Story, locate the feed post you want to share and click on the arrow icon located under the post. You’ll find it to the right of the heart icon and the message icon. Once the sharing menu opens, you can select “Add post to your Story,” which uploads your post as a sticker that you can customize before adding it to your Story. You can add stickers and other effects on the next screen, and then when you’re ready to share it, choose “Your Story” or “Close Friends” depending on whether you want to share it with everyone or just your nearest and dearest.

Sharing Etiquette

It’s a general rule of thumb on Instagram – and anywhere you want to use someone else’s photos – to ask the creator if it’s okay to repost their content. Most people will be happy to grant their permission if you contact them first and give them credit for the photo when you reupload.

Some people choose to screenshot other photos and upload them to their feeds. Although this could be a simpler method than using a reposting app, it’s only okay if you’ve asked permission and credit the creator. The benefit of reposting apps is that many of them copy the original caption and tag the creator for you when you repost.

Contacting other Instagram users before using their content has benefits that reach further than preventing a breach of copyright laws. It’s also beneficial in building connections on Instagram. By sparking a conversation with another user whose content you admire, you’re also putting yourself on their radar. They might even ask to use your content soon, which could boost your exposure!

Finally, avoid sharing any photos from a private Instagram account. The users who choose to keep their accounts private do so for a reason, so they probably won’t want their posts reshared to the public.

Resharing on Instagram

Sharing relevant content from other Instagram feeds is an excellent way to build your brand on Instagram and give your audience more of what they want to see. Although it’s not as simple to do as it is on other social media platforms, it’s possible to weave other content into your feed.

How to make a collab post on Instagram

The Collab feature on Instagram* is another way to collaborate with brands and bloggers, or simply make a collab post with a friend or family member.

We tell you how to set up the function, about its advantages and the purposes of introducing it into the social network.

What are collaborative posts on Instagram and why

A feature known as “Collab” or “Invite a Collaborator” was tested in early 2021 in several countries, including the UK and India, and launched worldwide in October. Collaborative posts are now available for any open account.

Collab allows you to share posts and videos on Instagram* with another person so that no one has to duplicate content. Both authors of the post will be listed, and the post will collect total likes, views, and comments.

Collaboration posts can be used by media personalities to announce collaborations, influencers to interact with brands, and ordinary users to post a video about a vacation with their best friend.

For example, Kourtney Kardashian and her fiancé Travis Barker used this feature on Halloween to show couples' costumes from Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands.

At the top right, you can see that the post has two authors, kourtneykardash and travisbarker. Click on the accounts and find that both users have the post, with the same engagement rates

The feature is very easy to use after a little practice.

How to post a joint post on Instagram*

To make a joint post, click on the plus in the upper right corner or bottom center of the screen. You will be taken to the creation menu. Next, follow the usual steps to create a post or rils. When you go to the menu where you can add a signature, click "Tag people" - a separate screen will open.

Next to the "Add tag" option, you will see the "Invite collaborator" function. Click and then find the account of the person you would like to invite to create a shared post.

You need to know what a collaborator's username looks like in order to search for it.

Multiple users can be selected, up to a maximum of 20. Note that 20 is the total number of participants. It includes both co-authors and people you simply tag in a post. You can tag 10 people and 10 co-authors, or 20 co-authors and no one else.

In the process, you will see a pop-up message "If [co-author name] accepts the invitation, this person will be credited as the author of your publication and it will be made available to their subscribers."

This means that you cannot unilaterally designate someone as a co-author of a joint publication. You can only invite a person to cooperate, and he can accept or decline the invitation.

By the way, if you were invited to become a co-author, and in the future you want to remove yourself from this post, just go to the post menu and click "Stop sharing"

Have you added all the co-authors you wanted? Click the "Done" button in the upper right corner of the screen to save the settings, then publish as usual.

To recap:

  • Create a new Instagram post* as usual.
  • Click Tag People when you get to the headings screen.
  • Click "Invite Collaborator" - the button is next to the "Add Tag" option.
  • Use the search box to find collaborators you want to collaborate with.
  • Click "Done" in the upper right corner of the screen to send the invitation to the shared post.
  • Post as usual.

For Reels co-publishing, the process is the same - record and edit as usual. Check Preview that everything looks correct, then click Next to get to the sharing options. On this page, click on "Tag People" to access the "Invite Collaborator" tag, and follow the outline.

Benefits of collaborating on Instagram*

Collab is a great feature to reach new, relevant audiences, but you have to make sure the content works for all collaborator channels. For example, you sell high-quality coffee makers, and the co-author sells great coffee. Co-authoring a post is a good idea, as the audience is interested in both.

Several clear advantages for joint posts on Instagram*:

  • Collab eliminates the publication of almost identical posts with friends.
  • The collab increases the reach of the audience, as it is available to both your subscribers and the co-author's subscribers.
  • A new audience can easily turn into subscribers if you collaborate with someone from your own or a related business niche. You can also reach your audience with hashtags. Read about it in the article “Hashtags for gaining followers on Instagram*: varieties, effectiveness, examples”.
  • You can get more likes and comments. It has not yet been proven that this will help boost the Instagram algorithm *, but it is possible that the social network will begin to give preference to this type of publication.

But consider the inconvenience : a joint post will be placed in the profile grids of both authors. This can be awkward when scheduling your posts in the same style. Consider the aesthetics and layout of both accounts before co-writing something.

Head of Instagram* Adam Mosseri: joint posts on Instagram* VS duets of TikTok

Instagram co-authorship* is for general posting, not co-creation.

Duets on TikTok allow you to record your own video along with the original based on another user's video.

A diction lesson is an example of a TikTok video created specifically for duets. Any user can take it as a template and complete the task by filling in the pauses after the speaker's words

Duets on TikTok and co-authorship on Instagram* introduce the creator of the video to a new audience, which is usually not very good on Instagram*. This is not my opinion, the thought was voiced by the head of the social network Adam Mosseri.

Instagram* is a platform where brands and influencers can stay connected to audiences they have built elsewhere. It's getting harder and harder to use Instagram* to acquire followers from scratch.

This is a problem for Mosseri, who wants Instagram* to be just as good at getting new creators noticed as TikTok.

“Instagram* is much better at helping content creators who have already made a name for themselves on the platform. TikTok is better at identifying new and young talents, and, first of all, helping them to open up.

And we want to be really good at it. Historically, we have paid less attention to this, but I am pushing my teams in every possible way to ensure that this “boy” (Collab) becomes better.

Mosseri acknowledges TikTok's ability to create social media stars, which he believes Instagram should also have*. Collaborative posts compensate for one of the main weaknesses of Instagram * and allow you to attract followers without an existing audience.

Theoretically, the function of joint posts will help to identify smaller accounts, but for this, there must be connections - promoted accounts with which they could begin to cooperate.

Content creators who don't have good connections or a large audience won't benefit much from collaborative posts, but this is a step towards Mosseri's goal of doing more with this "boy", Collab.

It can be concluded that the company plans to develop and improve joint posts.

How to repost a post in an Instagram story

In this article, you will learn how to add any public post to your Instagram story and how this feature will be beneficial for your business.

Find out if you have a repost feature

This feature is currently being tested and only available to a select audience. Not everyone has access to it yet. Even we don't have it, but luckily for us, our friends have it and they gave us access to their account to show it to you.

So, to find out if you have access, select any public post from any public account, including your own. Click on the Message or Send to button, it's the icon below the post picture that looks like a paper airplane. If you have the Add Post to Your Story option, then this functionality is available to you.

Please note that Instagram allows accounts to block this functionality. If you are checking the post and you do not have this option, then your account may have disabled this feature. You will need to check another account to see if you actually have access.

Repost to your stories

This new feature is a prelude to the official "regram" on Instagram. This is not a fully functional regram, as many would like. In this testing version, you can share an Instagram post in your own story. You cannot reshare it to your Instagram feed.

The process of sharing a post is relatively quick and easy.

Select any post, including your own. Click on the Send To button and select Add Post to Your Story as mentioned above.

A new history post will open. Instagram's technology automatically selects color gradients for the background color based on the colors in the image. The original post in this case will be a square image with the account name below it.

Now that you have a story post, edit your story as usual to add more context to your reshared post. You can drag and resize a shareable post and add text, stickers and other components to it.

If you don't like the background color that Instagram applied to a post, you can change it. To get started, click on the pencil icon.

Unfortunately, in this testing version, although the username is indicated at the bottom of the photo in the story, the original user is not noted in the post itself. That is, he will not receive notifications that you have shared his post.

In this situation, as a rule of etiquette, you need to indicate the proper copyright by adding text that contains the original user and tag him in the post so that he receives an alert.

Now complete your story by loading it in the normal way. Now you and your followers will be able to see it in your profile.

Interacting with reposts

When a user has republished a post to their stories, you can click on the story and then click on See Post to go directly to the original post from that user.

Once you open the original post, you can interact with it as usual, like or comment on it.

Edit sharing settings

By default, your account allows others to share your posts. Anyone should already have this option in their account settings by now.

There may be situations, however, when you don't want other accounts to be able to share your posts in their stories. You can easily stop this, even if the republish functionality is not available to you yet.

Click on the mechanism icon in your profile and scroll down to the Allow Others to Reshare option. If the slider for this option is enabled, then people can currently share your posts. To disable this setting, click on the slider and it will disable this option.

Legality of republishing

There are always doubts about posting someone else's content on social networks. They own the copyright to the original work and you need access to reuse that content.

Many sharing features on platforms like Facebook and Twitter allow users to bypass copyrights by sharing the original post with the copyright. This new Instagram reshare feature works more like these share features and most users will use this tool without considering the rights of the original users.

Of course, it's always best to ask permission before sharing someone's content. Since this new feature in Instagram can make many users happy when sharing their content. But that shouldn't stop you from asking permission.

This will be especially true when customers share content about your product or service. If you are sharing content that can generate financial benefit for your business, in the form of using posts as recommendations, then you will need to make sure that you have clear permission from the owner to republish their post.
