Instagram Guides are the perfect tool for sharing curated, scrollable content with your community. 

They give users a simple way to consume a collection of Instagram posts, products, or places in an easy-to-digest format. 

Despite all this though, Guides are still relatively underused — which makes them a great opportunity to set your brand apart on Instagram.

What is a Guide on Instagram?

Instagram Guides are like a miniature blog right on Instagram. They let users scroll through a curated flow of content with commentary — similar to a blog post.

They can be used to curate gift guides, product highlights, content roundups, FAQ guides, travel recommendations, restaurant reviews, and so much more.

They’re unlike any other Instagram feature because you can curate feed posts, products, or locations from across Instagram, bringing it all together with your commentary. 

Plus, Guides live in one, dedicated place on your profile: the Instagram Guides tab.

When a user clicks on an individual feed post in a Guide, they’re directed back to the original post — making them great for giving old content a new lease of life.

How to Make a Guide on Instagram

To create your first Guide, tap the plus icon on the top-right of your profile page and select “Guide.”

From here, you can choose from three different formats: Places, Products, and Posts.

Select the type of Guide you want to create, and choose the posts you'd like to feature in your Guide.

From here you can re-arrange the blocks, “Add a Title” and “Change Cover Photo,” as well as add titles and commentary (optional) for each content block. 

When you’re happy with your curated Guide, select “Next” in the top-right corner of the screen and then “Share.”

Published Guides are not shared to your main profile feed (yet). Instead, they are housed on a dedicated Guides tab on your profile.

Guides are also surfaced in your followers’ Home feeds in the immediate hours and days after publishing. 

What Are The Different Types of Instagram Guides? 

#1: Instagram Place Guides

The first Instagram Guide format is a collection of places. These Guides are great for city guides, restaurant roundups, and travel recommendations. 

You can search locations from Instagram's library, or choose from past locations you've tagged or saved in feed posts.

When you choose a place, you can pick an image that has been tagged with that location to feature in your Guide.  

#2: Instagram Product Guides

The next type of Instagram Guide you can curate is a Product Guide. This Guide is perfect for product releases, product recommendations, or gift guides.

You can attach and link any product listed on Instagram.

TIP: If you want to include a product from a brand's Instagram Shop, you can either search for it or select from your Wishlist.

#3: Instagram Post Guides

The next type of Instagram Guide you can share is a roundup of Instagram feed posts.

You can collect Instagram posts that you’ve created or saved (even if you're not the original author of a post).

Post Guides are great for curating lists of resources — whether it's sharing educational content or reflecting on current news or events.

Where to Find Instagram Guides

To access an Instagram Guide, visit a user’s profile page and select the Guides icon at the top of their profile feed:

If you can’t see this icon, it’s because that user does not have any published Guides.

Tip #1: Think About What Your Audience Wants

Using the Instagram Guide feature is a great way to curate and organize content for your followers — the creative opportunities are endless.

Think about what content your audience engages with the most, and use this information to influence your Guides content.

And when in doubt, ask your audience. Share an Instagram Stories question or poll sticker and ask your followers what type of Guides they'd be most interested in.

Tip #2: Share Instagram Guides in Stories

Since Instagram Guides aren’t shared on a user’s main profile feed, you may want to give them an extra boost on Instagram Stories.

Luckily, you can easily share Instagram Guides to Instagram Stories. 

Here’s how to share Instagram Guides in Stories:

  1. Open your Instagram Guide

  2. Tap the paper airplane icon in the bottom-left corner

  3. Select “Add guide to your story”

Instagram Guides are one of the newest ways to share content on the platform. Since the feature was first introduced in 2020 (along with Live, Shops, Reels and a rearranged home screen—whew) brands around the world have discovered how to incorporate Guides into their marketing strategies. And with nearly 1.5 billion people using Instagram every day, each new feature offers some serious potential reach.

But there’s something about Instagram Guides that sets them apart from all of the app’s other features: to create a Guide, you don’t need to make any new content. Exhausted social media managers, rejoice! Guides are all about taking photos, videos and posts that already exist and gathering them together: think of it like a family photo album, minus the embarrassing bathtub pics.

What is Instagram Guides?

Instagram Guides is a content format that combines visuals and text. Each guide is a curated collection of existing Instagram posts accompanied by descriptions, commentary, recipes, etc. Guides are similar to blog posts and give creators more space than traditional posts to share recommendations, tell stories, explain step-by-step instructions, and so on.

Guides include a cover image, title, introduction, embedded Instagram posts, and optional descriptions for entries.

Once you create your first Guide, a tab with a brochure icon will appear on your profile (along with your posts, videos, Reels and tagged posts).

Guides can’t be liked or commented on by other users—it’s more of a one-way sharing experience, like reading a book or watching TV. But, they can be shared on Instagram Stories and via direct messages.

Guide entries can be edited, added, or removed (this is another thing that sets them apart from other kinds of posts on Instagram—there is a lot more room to edit if you make a mistake or need to refresh the content).

3 types of Instagram Guides

Here’s a brief overview of the different kinds of Guides you can create on Instagram.

Place Guides

This is the idea that Instagram Guides was born for: sharing great locations, whether that’s hidden spots for camping, restaurants with cheap happy hours or the best public washrooms in New York City (I made that up, but it’s a good idea, isn’t it?). These Guides are geography-focused, and generally center around some kind of theme. For example, where to get vegan nachos in Seattle.

Product Guides

This type of Guides is great for small businesses looking to sell products and services directly on Instagram.

Product Guides are integrated with Instagram Shops (so you can’t add something to a product guide unless it’s a product on Shops). If you’re a brand that sells products, these kinds of guides can be used for sharing new launches, or gathering up a bunch of products in a specific category—like Our 2022 Swimsuit Collection or The 9 Best Button-Ups for Brunch with Your Mother-in-Law. If you’re a creator, you can make guides using goods from your favourite brands (and maybe make some money on it).

Post Guides

This type of Guide isn’t governed by geotags or products from rge Instagram Shop tab—it’s the most open-ended sort of guide, and allows you the most freedom in terms of what content you can include. Any public post can be included in a Guide, so it can be anything from How to Meditate Without Falling Asleep to 8 Pugs I Want to Hug.

How to make an Instagram Guide in 9 steps

New to creating Instagram Guides? Follow these steps to create Guides with posts, products, or places.

1. From your profile, click the plus symbol in the upper right corner and select Guide.

2. To pick your Guide type, tap Posts, Products, or Places.

3. Depending on what your Guide is about, you have different options for how to choose content.

  • For Instagram Guides to places: Search geotags, use saved places, or use locations you’ve geotagged on your own posts.
  • For Instagram Guides to products: Search brands or add products from your wishlist.
  • For Instagram Guides to posts: Use posts that you’ve saved, or your own personal posts.

4. Tap Next.

5. Add your guide title and description. If you would like to use a different cover photo, tap Change Cover Photo.

6. Double check the prepopulated place name, and edit as needed. If you wish, add a description.

7. Tap Add Place and repeat steps 4–8 until your guide is complete.

8. Tap Next in the upper right corner.

9. Tap Share.

Tip: The easiest way to quickly add things to your Guide is to save them beforehand, so make sure you’re hitting “save” on locations or posts you’d like to include (or, if you’re using products, add them to your wishlist). That way, Instagram will have the contents of your guide pre-saved in a single location: no searching required.

13 ways to use Instagram Guides for your business

If you’re guide-curious and not sure where to start, look to the experts. Here are a few examples of ways to use Instagram Guides to elevate your brand.

1. Create a gift guide

Trends change, but consumerism remains—and let’s face it, there’s nothing we can depend on more than the holiday season coming on way too fast. And gift guides aren’t just for winter holidays: you can make them for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s and Father’s Day, weddings or birthdays (or really any hyper-specific occasion your heart desires—dog’s adoption anniversary party, anyone?) and showcase your favorite products.

You can make a gift guide that features only products that your brand makes, or expand it to include non-competing brands that serve the same audience as you. For example, a company that sells funky pajama sets might make a Christmas gift guide that also includes cozy slippers from another brand. It’s a good way to build community, and it makes your guide look less like an advertisement.

2. Compile a list of tips

Everyone is an expert on something—whether that’s overnight hiking, peeling a pomegranate or getting a good night’s sleep, chances are you (or your brand) has a skill worth sharing. Gathering a list of tips on a certain topic is an excellent way to provide a service to your audience—they get free, valuable advice from you, which helps to build a relationship (and also makes them more likely to take a look at the rest of your content). This isn’t a direct way to earn revenue (like the gift guide example above) but it fosters another important element of business: trust from consumers.

Brassware manufacturers Perrin and Rowe complied a list of tips for designing the perfect utility room. They included examples from other creators in the design industry, fostering valuable relationships with them, too.

3. Gather posts under a theme

If your business is offering multiple products or services and posting different types of content (and hey, you should be!) you can gather them together in a guide under a specific theme. For example, a restaurant might create a guide that only showcases their desserts, or a sports equipment retailer might make a guide to the best baseball gear.

Instagram automatically organizes your profile chronologically (at least, it does at the time of writing this—only the Insta-gods know what the future holds), so creating guides of your posts grouped together is a helpful way for your followers to find exactly what they’re looking for.

4. Share your own favourite products

Creative folks are often asked what sorts of tools they use in their work—for example, you might ask a podcaster what kind of microphone they use or sculptor what kind of clay is their favourite. Sharing a product guide gives your followers an interesting peek into your process, and helps other aspiring creators find the best tools for them.

This artist created a guide to all of the materials they use in their paintings, making it easy for their audience to purchase the same ones. (Pro tip: if you’re into affiliate marketing, this could be a great way to incorporate it and make some money).

5. Create a ranked list

Ranking things (objectively or subjectively) is almost as much fun to do as it is to read about—this can be a fun team-building exercise as well as a great method of creating content. Share your bestsellers, your most popular posts, or you employee’s favourite products in a ranked list. You can run a contest or post a story asking your audience to rank things, and publish the results as an Instagram Guide.

6. Share a brand story or message

It’s tough to control what your new followers will see as a first impression of your brand—with only 150 characters allowed in your bio and new posts shared everyday, your profile at a glance doesn’t give viewers much of an idea of who you are.

Creating an Instagram Guide that introduces your company (and the values you hold) is the perfect way to give potential followers a snapshot of your brand. You can share company history, a founder’s bio, and some of your top-selling products or even goals as a brand: think of this like a fun alternative to a resume.

7. Provide step-by-step instructions

Similar to a guide with tips or advice, a guide outlining step-by-step instructions provides a free service to your followers (how generous!). This is a helpful way to assemble posts together, especially if you are already running an advice series or providing how-to instructions on Instagram.

This digital creator often shares how-to guides as carousel posts, but gathered them all together in an Instagram Guide that covers various strategies for improving mental health.

8. Shoutout others in your community

It’s important to remember that Instagram Guides aren’t just limited to your own content—you can include posts from other creators or brands too. This is both beneficial to your followers and to your company.

Guides with advice, posts or products from multiple sources will be more helpful and communicate more information than guides with a single source. Plus, including content from other brands (psst: make sure their values align with yours!) helps you to create a positive relationship with them. You’re building community and making valuable connections—for example, including a brand on a guide will make them more likely to want to partner with you on a giveaway.

Even though you technically don’t have to, it’s best practice to ask for permission before including a post that isn’t yours in an Instagram guide. Send a quick DM to avoid any awkwardness later.

9. Collaborate with a creator

Instagram provides lots of ways for businesses to collaborate with creators, and guides make up a piece of that marketing puzzle.

You can create guides that feature your brand ambassadors, collaborate with influencers to make Guides on their account, and more. Similar to the above, this helps to foster community. Additionally, it helps share your content with a wider audience: your followers will see your guide, and the creator’s followers will see it, too.

10. Share a travel guide

The travel industry jumped on Instagram Guides as soon as they became available—and whether your followers scroll through to actually plan trips, get inspiration or just to daydream about their next vacation, they’re super engaging (and often, beautiful).

If you’re a travel-related company, this is the guide for you… but some clever outside-the-box thinking can align almost any brand with a geography-focused guide. For example, a running shoe company could provide a guide to the best trails in a certain area, or a cat food business could make a guide to cat-friendly hotels in the city. The world’s at your fingertips! Dream big!

11. Promote causes and provide resources

For companies that champion causes and engage in social activism, Instagram Guides provide a place to summarize efforts and share resources. If your brand isn’t specifically geared towards social activism, you can still do this—and in fact, you should! Using your platform for social change is good, whether you’re a houselessness-focused nonprofit or a handmade hair scrunchie biz.

12. Share behind-the-scenes content

Brands in the creative industry often share behind-the-scenes content (and the internet loves it). If you’ve already shared the process behind creating your crocheted halter tops or hand-carved walking sticks on Instagram, gather that content together to create a guide.

This helps your audience understand more about you and how much work goes into your business, which, you know, is good for business.

What is Instagram Guides: instructions for the format "Guides"

Guides (or "Guides") is a collection of cards on any topic that can be quickly made on Instagram. The format appeared in May of this year, when it was available only to non-profit organizations. For convenience, we will call the new format a guide.

On November 17, guides became available to users from all over the world. In the Russian version, they are called "Guides" and are located in the same add-ons section as AR masks, a store with goods and IGTV.

According to TechCrunch, an Instagram travel guide is like blog posts. This format is expected to increase the amount of time users spend on Instagram. After all, you no longer have to click on external links to find out, for example, the biography of the author.

More about the format and examples

Guides can be composed of geolocations, products or posts. And then save as drafts and edit after publication.

Here are some examples of guides produced by Russian non-profit organizations:

  • “What is violence like and how does it affect mental health?” from the center for work with the problem of violence "TO VIOLENCE. NO".
  • "How to protect yourself and loved ones from bullying online?" from ROCIT.
  • "Support as taking care of yourself and others" from the Need Help Foundation.
  • "Philosophy of inclusion and communication etiquette" from the Galchonok Charitable Foundation.

How to make a guide - step by step instructions

1. Go to your company page on Instagram and click on the plus in the upper right corner.

2. Create a Guide.

3. Select content for the guide. These can be publications, locations, or products.

  • Posts: select posts (from your account or saved posts).
  • "Places": select a point on the map and make a guide from the posts in which this geolocation is marked.
  • "Products": select an account that has products. Then click on the desired product and create a selection of posts in which this product is marked.

Let's focus on the simplest - publications.

4. Select the posts to collect. It is desirable that they all be on the same topic or complement each other.

5. Come up with texts - a title for the collection and headings for each card. Detailed descriptions are optional.

6. Everything is ready! The selection can be saved as drafts or immediately published, and then edited. Look at the selection we made in eLama:

What you need to know about guides

  1. There are restrictions: there can be no more than 30 cards in the collection, and the maximum number of characters in the card description is 2200.
  2. Guides can only be created from the Instagram mobile app. This can be inconvenient if you want to write a long eyeliner. Solution: write the text in advance on the computer and copy it in parts to Instagram. We wanted to cheat and make a draft without text, and then edit it from the desktop - this turned out to be impossible.
  3. Guides don't have likes or comments. They can be sent to friends or posted in Stories. How to evaluate the effectiveness is not yet clear.
  4. Posts (your own or saved) can be added to the collection. IGTV can't be added.
  5. The optimal title for a card is 52 characters. You can do more, but the rest of the text will be hidden behind the ellipsis: readers will not be able to see it.
  6. To make a good guide, you need posts. It’s good if you have published a lot of materials before and now you can make a selection out of them.

How a business can use guides

Instagram guides are a space for creativity, and it is available to everyone. Here are some ideas and examples for inspiration.

Type of guide "Places"

The best option for guides and travel agencies. You can make selections:

  • interesting places in your city;
  • from countries / cities that you can go to or take a weekend trip during a pandemic;
  • promotions and special offers for travel lovers.

More "Places" may be of interest if you have a museum, gallery, news portal or network establishments. There are many options.

Guide type "Products"

You can make collections of products from the posts of any accounts that have the Instagram Shopping Tags function enabled. For example, if your audience loves to take care of themselves, you can make a selection of cosmetics by skin type (dry, oily, normal, combination).

Now the Instagram Shopping Tags function is not officially available in Russia (there are articles on the Internet about how to bypass restrictions, but we will not consider this case). Therefore, product guides can only be made from the posts of those brands that have the Instagram Shopping Tags function enabled.

Guide type "Publications"

While preparing this material, we read a lot of guides on Instagram. Of the three types of content (posts, products, locations), guides with posts were in the lead. This is not surprising: it is much easier to make collections from posts, and the chance of audience engagement is higher.

Here are some examples of post guides. They are in a foreign language, but useful for inspiration:

  • Activities for the whole family during the period of social isolation (by vitaalere).
  • How to talk about your feelings (by Heads Together).
  • How to deal with cyberbullying by eenfance.
  • About dependence on social networks in the period of digitalization (by clicksafe).
  • How to stay on top of your mental health (by headspace_aus).
  • The best version of the internet starts with you (by sudahdong).

The main thing is not to lose the goal in the pursuit of creativity: do not make selections for the sake of selections, but solve business problems. A few tips:

  • When you're making product selections, think of an interesting theme for them. For example, not “Our most popular products”, but “Products for a cool winter holiday”. Wordstat and Google Trends will help you check interest in a particular topic.
  • If you often run ads to a "cold" audience, you should have a detailed post about your company. Example.

Summing up

Instagram guides are definitely worth testing - this is a quick way to tell your audience in detail and visually about your company, products and services. They are suitable for almost any business, it all depends on the desire and imagination.

Collections can help you get additional coverage: advertising systems often promote a new format on their own and give preference to it in search results.

The main thing is not to hesitate and quickly try new formats and tools.

What is an Instagram guide

Instagram guides were first introduced in mid-2020. Then this section became available only for the health and active lifestyle industry.

Guides or guidebooks is a new section of content, it brings together information on a specific topic. In this case, you can add both your publications and posts of other users. For example, a nutritionist might add articles with recipes or weight loss tips to guides.

Already in November 2020, Instagram launched guides for all users.

The Instagram platform itself describes guides as "a way to easily find recommendations, tips and other content from various public figures, companies and brands."

In simple terms, guides are separate groups of content collected in a single resource . You can group educational content, product instructions, ideas, news, showcase your business, and more. This will allow your audience to quickly find and view information on a specific topic instead of scrolling through an entire feed.

In different versions of Instagram, the guides section is called differently: guides, guides, tips.

Whether you're a B2C or B2B brand or a blogger, it makes sense to find a way to create guides to group useful information that your audience is interested in.

1. Creating an Instagram guide

Creating your own Instagram guide takes several steps.

From your profile page, click on the + sign in the upper right corner.

Select Tips from the pop-up menu.

If you have previously created guides, go to the appropriate section and click + to add a new one.

2. Add content to the new guide

In the next step, Instagram will prompt you to choose guide type . You can include places, products and publications in the guide. Since Instagram has already launched the ability to add products in Russia, you can now choose products for the guide not only from foreign, but also from local stores.

Please note that only posts from the feed, not stories, can be added to the guide. If videos or IGTV posts were published in the feed, they can also be included in the guide.

Whichever type of guide you choose, to add posts, just click on the thumbnail of the publication. The posts will be loaded in the order they were added - the first post added will be visible at the top of the guide. Therefore, if you want to arrange posts in the guide based on the date they were created, add old posts first, then newer ones.

Guide with adding posts related to a specific place

By choosing the type of guide "Places", you can select a place on the map. Next, upload up to five publications related to this place.

Keep in mind that Instagram will add all public content associated with this location, not just yours.

This feature is useful if you have a business with a physical location, such as a cafe or store. By adding your store location, you will be able to collect user generated content (UGC).

Product guide

The product guide option will allow you to collect all publications related to one product. If you select this type of guide, the system will then prompt you to select one of the stores on Instagram.

Once you've identified the store, select the product you want to showcase, and then select the publications associated with that product. For each individual product, you will need to create a separate guide.

Guide with added posts

By selecting the option "Posts", you can select posts in your profile or saved posts from other accounts. Select the posts you want to add to the guide from the Your Posts or Saved tabs.

If you want to share other people's entries in the guide, add them to the "Saved" in advance. Up to 30 posts can be added to the guide.

3. Format guide

After you have added content to the guide, you will be taken to the formatting page.

Add the name of the guide. It is better to use clear and concise headings. Next, you can write a description of the guide.

It is possible to change the cover photo of the guide. The photo from the post is automatically set as the cover, but this is not very convenient. The fact is that most posts on Instagram have a 1:1 square format, and the cover of the guide has a 3:4 portrait orientation, that is, your image may be cropped.

You can use any photo from the feed or saved messages as the cover image.

Next write the title and description of each post in the guide. The system will not fill in this data on its own from the original post, you will have to enter it manually.

More entries can be added to the guide at this stage. Just click + at the bottom of the page.

If you want to change the order or remove some entries from the guide, click on the icon with three dots in the upper right corner of any post. Select either "Remove from Tips" or "Reorder Seats".

After selecting the "Reorder Places" option, you will see a window where you can rearrange any of the entries in the order you want.

When formatting is complete, continue on.

4. Publish the created guide

The next step will open the preview window. See what your guide looks like and if you're ready to post it, hit Share. You can save the guide as a draft so you can come back later and edit it.

As soon as you share the created guide, a section of guides will appear on your page. Once published, other users will be able to see your new guide and share it.

5. Sharing and promoting guides on Instagram

You can share the guide with other users on Instagram either by sending it to direct or by posting it in stories. And anyone who looks at the guide can also share it with friends.

To share a guide, just click on the share icon (paper airplane icon) and choose who to send a message to or post the guide to stories. You can also send the guide to a group with many people.

A great way to promote a guide is to post it in stories.
