Facebook Gaming has announced a path to partnership for streamers in its Level Up creators program, which is the site’s equivalent of Twitch’s affiliates. It’s pretty grueling, and eligibility isn’t judged on the same metrics as its Level Up program, which allows streamers to start monetizing their broadcasts. Partners, however, get a slew of benefits, including a direct line to Facebook’s support team, a private Facebook Gaming community group, partner-only invites to Facebook Gaming events, a partner badge, and more.

Streamers in the Level Up program, on the other hand, are able to monetize their streams with Facebook Stars, a site currency, and fan subscriptions; they also get features like high-quality transcoding (i.e., 1080p 60fps streams) and access to beta products and features.

To be eligible for the Level Up program, gaming creators on Facebook have to stream games for four hours in the prior two weeks on at least two separate days in that same period. They also need at least 100 followers on a page that’s been active for more than two weeks. The admin of said page needs to be older than 18. These metrics are pretty reasonable and just about comparable to Twitch’s program metrics for its affiliate program (reach 50 followers, stream for eight hours on seven different days, with an average of three viewers in a one-month period).

Eligibility for Facebook Gaming’s partnership program is judged on “engaged followers”

Eligibility for Facebook Gaming’s partnership program, on the other hand, is judged on “engaged followers” — Facebook’s way of tracking the people who regularly return to your stream — and Stars revenue. To be considered for the partnership program, a gaming creator needs to have 3,000 engaged followers and earn $2,000 (200,000 stars) in a month.

Twitch’s partnership program has different requirements: streamers must broadcast for 25 hours on 12 different days with an average of 75 viewers in a month. It also has a reputation for being notoriously difficult to achieve. Those metrics seem fairly reasonable on their face, but in practice, it’s hard to hit those numbers and get Twitch to approve your application. Many streamers apply more than once before making it into the 27,000-strong club.

What’s most interesting about Facebook’s partnership requirements is that they didn’t have a clear path to being verified as a gaming creator on the site before; it’s also fascinating that there are just two requirements, and one is tied explicitly to how much money a creator earns on the site. ($2,000 works out to about 200,000 bits or 800 $5 subscriptions — Twitch takes a 50 percent cut. )

A spokesperson for Facebook Gaming told me in an email that more than 2,000 creators earn at least $1,000 a month on the site, though they presumably are including the current slate of Facebook Gaming partners — streamers like Cory “King Gothalion” Michael, who left Twitch for an exclusive Mixer deal in October 2019 and who then moved to Facebook Gaming after Mixer shut down — in those numbers.

Some Level Up streamers will absolutely hit Facebook’s numbers for partnership immediately, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the requirements become less onerous over time. After all, back in 2015, streamers on Twitch used to have to average more than 500 concurrents a stream to be considered for partnership. As one Reddit post from that era lamented: “500... 500 viewers on average, every time you stream. This seems an almost impossibility? Anyone had experience with twitch partnering?”

While they still stream — and cast and produce Valorant tournaments — they still haven’t made partner. It’s important to remember that the creator economy is just as unequal as the real one. By Twitch’s own count, there are now around 27,000 partners on its site. But that’s out of 2,000,000 other active broadcasters.

What is a Facebook Gaming Partner?

A Facebook Gaming Partner is someone who has “surpassed” the Level Up program by being “discovered” by Facebook. There are no set milestones for becoming a partner other than being in the Level Up program and continually streaming valuable content to your community.

Facebook Gaming Partner Requirements

To become a Facebook Gaming partner, you need to do the following:

  • Be in the Level Up Program
  • Continually produce good content

As of this writing, there is no way to apply to become a Facebook Gaming partner. Instead, you have to wait until Facebook reaches out to you. 

Join the Level Up Program 

The “Level Up Program” is a similar equivalent to “Twitch’s Affiliate Program,” in that it is an entry point to becoming partnered with Facebook Gaming. As a member of the Level Up program, you will become eligible to unlock Facebook stars, giving your followers and fans the opportunity to support you financially. 

To join Facebook Gaming’s Level Up program, you need to first complete the following milestones:

  • Create a “Gaming Video Creator” page or converting a current Facebook page into a creator page
  • Stream at least 4 hours over at least 2 days within the last two weeks
  • 100 followers or more on the Gaming page
  • Gaming page must be active for at least 30 days

To see if you are eligible for the program, you can visit your streamer page. Once you have reached every milestone, you will have the opportunity to apply by pressing the button. 

Must Be Discovered By Facebook

How can you be discovered by Facebook? While there is no guaranteed formula, there are a few things you can do to increase your chances:

  • Network with other Facebook Gaming partners
  • Build a stream community
  • Create content that reaches a broad audience

Network With Other Facebook Gaming Partners

Network with other Facebook Gaming streamers, especially those who stream in your region or country. If you can make friends with someone who is already partnered, ask them for advice and if they can see where you can improve to become more discoverable. 

As with any corporation, Facebook recognizes numbers and if you have a large active community, they may notice your faster. Note that the quality of your content and posts, as well as your user interaction, will come in to play. If they see you consistently building up their brand, they will be more likely to invest time into yours.

Create Quality Content for a Broad Audience

Look outside of building your Facebook Gaming channel. Build social accounts or a YouTube Channel that points back to your Facebook Gaming channel. Anything that can attract new users to the platform.

On stream, create content that draws in your audience and keep them engaged. Use quality graphics, such as overlays for Facebook Gaming, to show that you are running a professional channel.

Facebook pays its Facebook Gaming partners $.01 USD for every star that is donated to them from their viewers. Streamers can also earn when a viewer supports the channel by subscribing to it for $4.99 per month. The payout will come 30-60 days after the streamer has reached a payout of $100 USD. 

While there are a few ways that Facebook Gaming Partners get paid, we will focus on stars, subscriptions, and sponsorships. 

Get Paid With Stars

Stars are the on-platform currency of Facebook Gaming. They can be purchased by viewers and donated to the streamer of their choice.

Sponsorships/Affiliates 

Streamers make money typically through sponsorships and Affiliate deals. The goal is that you need to wait for the right company or product to come along. Don’t agree to any sponsorship that you don’t feel comfortable with. Talk to other streamers about their experiences with a particular sponsor to help you decide whether or not to work with them. 

You can also set up affiliates with many different products. If one of your viewers buys a product through your link, you will earn a percentage of the sale. 

How Does Facebook Pay You?

When you join the Level Up Program, you will have the opportunity to earn Stars from your viewers. When you reach the payment threshold of $100 (USD) or 10,000 stars, Facebook will pay you the following month (or in two months depending on where you are located in the world). 

In order for Facebook to pay you, you must set up your payout settings in your creator studio. Click on “Monetization” in the left-hand column, then choose “Payout Settings” from the menu that appears beneath the tab. 

If you aren’t receiving your payouts, you can check “Monetization with Facebook” to see where your metrics lie. There may be something preventing them from sending you your earnings. If you can’t figure it out, reach out to the company and ask.

While there is no official list of Facebook Gaming partners, you can see whether or not a Facebook Gaming streamer is a partner from their profile page. You can also network with people through Discord servers or Facebook groups.

When a new gaming platform comes along, it's always interesting to see how developers manage new features.

Instant Games by Facebook allows you to play games in Messenger and News Feed. Therefore, it cannot be called an ordinary "platform". It is not surprising that at first developers approached it with apprehension. But there were other reasons as well. nine0003

First of all, messenger games are built in HTML5, a technology that hasn't performed very well when it comes to game development.

Secondly, the Facebook messenger cannot be considered an independent platform at all - it is rather a platform within a platform.

Thirdly, Facebook Instant Games, as a new platform at the time of release, had yet to establish interaction with the mobile ecosystems of Apple and Google.

One way or another, a year after the appearance of the platform is functioning properly. Its games have a growing audience, advertising in them is sold at a market price, and more recently, Instant Games has also added in-game purchases. nine0003

When developing such titles, you need to think about what unique opportunities for design the messenger format opens up.

Messenger is not a marketing channel

Many mobile developers view messengers in this way. I can't blame them - there is a lot of competition on mobile and developers are jumping at every chance to get more installs. But when developers think that the messenger is a free channel for getting a new audience, they are deeply mistaken. nine0003

Facebook is purposefully building Instant Games as a standalone platform. The task of a social network is to increase the involvement of your messenger, and not to pour traffic into your games. So using the platform to take the audience somewhere else is completely useless, and you don’t have to do it. Games function as an independent business unit, and this should not be hindered.

However, Instant Games can be used for brand promotion. This happened, for example, with Nordeus and ZeptoLab. At Instant Games, Nordeus has a Golden Boot game that constantly mentions the Top Eleven brand. At the same time, there is not a single link to this football manager in the game. In turn, ZeptoLab made an Instant version of Cut the Rope, which is very close in feel to the mobile original. nine0003

Both projects can lead to organic downloads, but at the same time they have their own large audience on Instant Games. This means that they can earn on their own. Branding is good, but if the games themselves generate revenue, it's always better.

If the messenger is not considered as a way to attract an audience to existing titles, then games for this platform should be developed in such a way that they are independent both in terms of monetization and in terms of audience retention. Retention is the hardest thing

Retention on messenger platforms is lower than on mobile. This is natural - most users launch the messenger to chat with friends, not to play. Games for messengers are not installed on a smartphone, which means no icons on the desktop, no push notifications or reminders. Such games should keep the user in other ways.

No setting good for findability but bad for retention

Retention should come from a unique feature of the platform, here social interactions. The main source of game retention in messengers is friends who offer you to play with or against them.

In native games, developers encourage gamers to play not so much with real friends as with strangers who are online at the same time. Thus, here are the main challenges for a developer of games for instant messengers:

  • How to make a game that will be relevant for both personal and group chats?
  • How to make sure that bots do not spam players, but are useful to them?
  • How to set up bots and social environment so that the player wants to return to the game?

As you can see, these are not the questions that designers of native mobile games face.

Set up social interaction in the game

The best messenger games are the ones that do the best job of improving the social interaction of the players. This increases both the virality of the project and retention. So we just need to push the players to spam their friends with calls to play, right?

Projects that use this approach are more like the social games that were on Facebook before Instant Games. For example:

  • in Cookie Crush players give each other Lives;
  • In Everwing, players receive Honor Points for sending messages to their friends; nine0109
  • users are forced to "play with friends" even in single player mode - for example, the game shows how many points each of the players scored.

These are by no means the best solutions, and there are methods that suit the platform much better.

The novelty of messenger games in group chat dynamics . Good projects encourage players to get involved in a group discussion: to solve a problem together or to compete with each other. nine0003

The best example of such social interaction is the "group raid" system. A group raid is when users launch a difficult level that can only be completed by cooperating with other players in a group chat. The stronger the group members, the more difficult the level itself will be, and the higher the reward will be.

This system allows players of different levels to play together. It rewards the user for playing together with friends and motivates them to play more. However, such mechanics can only be applied in sufficiently deep RPG games, not all projects can use this approach. nine0003

Some games use turn-based gameplay to promote social interaction between players. After each move, the player sends a message about his actions to the opponent/ally.

We tried several times to make a turn-based game with active interaction between players in the messenger, but found that this was not a good option for retention. The main reason is that if users cannot continue playing because they are waiting for someone else's turn, they will eventually leave the game altogether. It's like mobile Words with Friends and Draw Something, which were only interesting while your friends were playing them. As soon as friends are slow to respond, there is no point in returning to the game. nine0003

Some messenger games have succeeded with turn-based gameplay, such as Miniclip's 8 ball pool or the Facebook version of Words with Friends. I think this blurs the line between messenger games and native mobile games. This method is based on copying finds that perform well on mobile. So far, the method works well, but in the near future those games in which social interaction is established with friends will show themselves better. It is the game of the user with his friends that is the best way for the development of the platform.

Since the findability of messenger games is a big issue, developers need to rely on the player's social environment as a source of retention and downloads. Games that cleverly integrate social interaction will end up winning. nine0036

Instant Games is still in its infancy, but the market is growing very fast. In one year, there have already been big shifts here, revealing which games fit the platform better. Many titles that turned out to be very popular when the platform appeared (Galaga, Space Invaders, PAC-Man) actually disappeared, and quite a few new titles that appeared in the last six months, on the contrary, became top ones (Snake Mania, Cookie Crush).

Games for Instant Games will soon be the Wild West for developers. The more developers join the platform and the greater the problem of game findability, the more the design of these games will move towards social interaction. nine0003

Here are my recommendations for anyone looking to enter the messenger games market:

  • The platform is not intended to draw attention to your native mobile games. Instant Games is an independent platform where projects can earn money on their own. Collaborate with the platform owners and build an audience in the messenger, don't think of this platform as a place to take players away from.
  • It is very difficult to keep an audience here. nine0036 Without installation on the player's device, it is very difficult for the game to stay up to date. Games with few players generally provide better performance than games with multiple players. To improve game performance Reduce the number of players who can play a game when setting up a multiplayer game on a local network or the Internet. Also, reduce the number of players joining the game. If the problem persists, go to Method 5.

Method 5: Tuning for best performance

  1. Click Start , right-click Computer , select Properties and then Advanced System Settings . When prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, enter the password or click Continue .

  2. On the Advanced tab , click the Options button under Performance .

  3. On the Visual Effects tab , click Adjust to get better performance , and then click OK .

  4. nine0002 Click the OK button to close the System Properties dialog box.

  5. Test the game.

If the problem persists, go to Method 6.

Method 6: Checking the hard drive for errors

  1. nine0002 Close all open programs.

  2. Click " Start " and select Computer .

  3. Right-click the hard drive that may be damaged.

  4. Click the Properties button and open tab Service .

  5. In the Error Check area, click the Check Now button.

  6. Select the Automatically fix system errors check box.
